When did you stop feeling 'fat'?

When was it for you, that you looked in the mirror and didn't think of yourself as overweight? Was it once you entered the healthy BMI range? Was it when you were in a certain clothes size? Or did it just one day click?
I've lost 22lbs so far, 18lbs to go until I have a 'healthy BMI', but I can't notice much difference at all... I'm wondering whether I'll always consider myself the fat girl.

You'll still have the same body
My healthy BMI starts at 64.8 kilos. I noticed a remarkable difference from 64 to 61 kilos. At 64 I was eager to get the last poundage off, and then at 61, I was "ooh, that body! I'm hot"11 -
Seeing pictures (plural - not relying on one especially good or especially bad one) helped me quite a bit. I was much more significantly overweight than you (lost 155 lbs), but my brain lies to me. It wasn't like one day it clicked and I never felt fat again. Some days I look in the mirror and feel awesome, other days I look in the mirror and seriously still see myself at 330 lbs. Intellectually I know I'm not, but I literally see it in the mirror.
The only two real correlations for me that I've found are:
1. How well my clothes fit. Too tight or too loose clothes mess with my head, making me feel bigger than I am.
2. How well I'm adhering to my plan. When I'm on plan, logging, sticking to my goal ranges, exercising the amount I said I would - I tend to feel emotionally awesome and see it in the mirror. It doesn't have to be that I'm eating lightly, even if I plan an indulgent day, as long as I had a plan and stuck too it, I get the mental benefits. On the flip side, even if the scale is staying down, when I'm off my plan, I feel huge, am unhappy with my reflection, etc.17 -
Don't worry it will happen- but yeah probably not til you're closer to that healthy bmi.
Do you work out or just losing weight with a caloric deficit? For me working out can help because it adds more of an athletic shape rather than just getting smaller.
Great job on your loss so far, you're more than half way there!4 -
Never. Let's just say that I have rather exacting standards. Oh sure, when I hit 150 (from my 265 start) there was a notable difference, but I had let myself go from being fat and sloppy, to skinnyfat and sloppy. Then I started lifting again, at a surplus, and let myself get fat again, as I went from 150 to 177 in just a few months.
Working on that last one currently.2 -
I don't know anyone that is ever 100% happy with their physique. Not exactly what you were asking but some food for thought.

Another vote for never, here.5

I'll let you know if I ever get there!3

Honestly? I'm down 60lbs and for me it hasn't happened yet. My current BMI is 23 down from 32. I have days where I'm (fairly) happy with how I look, and there are days (or weeks, like now) where I still feel like the 200 pound girl I once was. The mind takes forever to catch up and I'm not sure I'll ever see myself as the thin girl. I suppose I'll just have to trust what others see and tell me5

I still have thoughts of myself as being fat. I'm in the 170's (I can't give you the exact weight I am since I haven't weighed myself yet this morning) so I'm not at healthy bmi yet. I am finally in the overweight one now. Maybe once I'm at a healthy bmi then I'll finally feel different.3

I guess it depends on your attitude...
In my teens I was tiny and adorable looking back at pictures but at the time I thought I looked chubby. In my 20s I got to a pretty low weight at one point that looking back now at pictures looks a bit too thin but at the time I wanted to lose even more weight but never quite could...
I don't know why in the past I just wanted to look as thin as possible- maybe because I work in the apparel industry and am always looking at fashion magazines for inspiration or checking out the fashion shows and started to think that model physique was normal?
Now that I'm in my mid-30's and have been through a major health crisis and lived to fight another day, I'm a little easier on myself. I know I'll never look like a model and that's ok. I also think a more healthy fitness type physique is more attractive now that I've gotten into weight lifting. I used to think bony arms looked good- now I like to see the curves of muscle in all the right places. I LOVE my deltoids right now, especially when performing upright rows with a barbell! I love the shape my quads are developing from the squats and stair climbing and hiking I do regularly... I'm not all that happy with the excess fat on my body right now or thrilled about the cellulite that has appeared with age, but I feel like this time I'll be really happy when I reach my goal weight, because I'm healthy, happy, fit, and most importantly ALIVE. I'll probably still have some extra chub and the cellulite likely isn't going anywhere- but I can live with that.
Funny too- my goal weight now is about 15 pounds heavier than my previous lowest adult weight. My current weight is 18 pounds heavier than my goal weight. But I'm already starting to like what I see in the mirror more and more.
So I totally get that feeling of never being happy with your body no matter what... because I was that way for most of my life. But I guess something finally clicked and now I'm just happy to be here and also think I look better with every pound lost and every muscle that gets a little more shapely & defined.

I don't have a sense of myself at my current weight yet. I don't feel my obese former self, but I'm still stuck feeling how I did about 20 pounds ago, which was still overweight.
So I still feel fat.3 -
I'm 15 pounds under the top of the normal BMI and still feel fat. I'm not skinnyfat, I just have all my fat in my midsection hip and belly, but there's loose skin too so it just looks worse).1

Never say never but than again I am not sure, hopefully one day I can answer your question.............1

149 pounds. Haha.4

10 years ago I was an avid gymmer and size zero but I thought I was huge!!! Then I quit gymming because I wanted to be curvy and when the weight started coming back due to lack of hardcore exercise I felt thin and ate like a pig lol. So um I put on 35 kgs( I was 55 kgs then) and got back here to do it healthily and accept myself the way I am1

I have lost 57lbs, at some times have visible abs and am 15% body fat and I still feel fat every day....not sure when it will happen for me, if ever!1

I've only lost 20 real pounds (fat pounds?), but my clothes are 'much' looser and I'm down a size and a half in my pants. I'm just starting to feel much less fat but better about myself. I think I've lost a lot of fat though cause all my clothes are much looser. Plus I'm much much more limber.1

I've never felt this way even when i knew logically that i was very lean. To be fair though, i believe i may have an issue with body dysmorphia and it's incredibly difficult for me to see myself objectively.
There are days when i look much larger to myself and objectively "chubby", and there are also days when i have a super inflated ego and think i look like aphrodite herself even when photos do not reflect this image. So.... *shrug*7 -

In doing C25K, but not weight training. I'm going to start 30DS after Christmas but I only do these for fitness, not weight loss.

In my experience when people think they are X% bodyfat, they are in fact X+2/3/4%. Keep going and you'll get there.2 -
When I was able to fit into Abercrombie and H&M jeans lol5

I thought I was fat as a 5'6" 125 pound teenager. I thought I was smokin' as a 220 pound adult. Self-perception is a weird thing. It's really hard for me to have an accurate idea of myself. I'm getting better at it, but I need to use tools like body fat percentages and bmi so that I have objective measures to use. That said, I have about 15 to 20 ish pounds to go and I THINK I look pretty good if you like your women a little thick - I know I do.7
-
I had days where I felt fat when my BMI was 19, I had days where I felt thin when my BMI was 28. No matter what my weight I have days where I feel fat and days where I feel thin. The mind is a weird thing.5

I'm still fat , but it helped when I could wipe my butt ,,, oh the goals we have lol.17

Being able to continue to wipe my own butt is one of the motivations listed in my profile. It's funny, but I mean it.11 -

I'm several years into maintenance and have a bmi of around 21. I still have days where I feel 'fat' even though I know that's not the case. It's a mental hurdle that I don't know if I'll ever fully get over? This seems to be a pretty common issue among people who've lost weight.2 -
For me it was when I stopped drinking soda and loss all my bloatedness(real word?)2
-
The only time I feel "unfat" is when I change clothing sizes or wear clothes around the house from before I started losing (down 93 lbs). It's only temporary, though. My fat brain always catches up. It's here to stay, and I'm ok with that.3
-
After dropping 30 pounds, clothes fit "normal" without all the buldging. Still not trim or athletic, but definitely not pudgy with a big belly.3
-
I've been working on body image so I'm trying to feel that even though I'm not in a healthy bmi range I'm trying to just be thankful my body got me this far, and I will work on getting into a healthy bmi so we can go farther.3
