I have been trying to lose weight for like forever now and nothing seems to work. I heard about phentermine as a jump start and I was wondering what you guys thought or if any of you have tried it. Thanks in advance

What do you mean by trying, forever, and seem to work? Have you calculated your TDEE and subtracted a reasonable deficit to set a healthy calorie goal? Have you weighed and logged everything you eat and drink, accurately, consistently and honestly, for at least a couple of months? Have you weighed yourself at least once per week, under the same conditions, for the same period?
Jumpstarts to weightloss is *kitten* and using drugs is just sad.17 -
My daughter tried it once thru one of these diet centers, it did not work for her. It didn't change her eating habits which are her problem. At first she thought she wasn't as hungry but then she just quit the program as it was too expensive for her budget. I'm trying to get her to join me in my diet. I am on nutrisystem right now and its too costly for her too at the moment, but in our house its the wrong foods and the portions are always to large. When I cook now I am trying to make half of what I did before. I never wanted anyone to leave the table hungry, we always ate like it was thanksgiving. If I bought a baking potato I bought huge ones and everyone got one and smothered it with butter. Now I try and find smaller one and then they have to share. LOL I still learning..9

I wouldn't advice using this drug. Doctors don't give it out anymore because it has such serious side effects and the weight loss results are not prominent anyway. Diarrhea and vomiting are pretty common and there are some very serious heart problems that occur. People's bodies become use to the drug (resistant) very quickly so it no longer affects your weight loss after a few months. I would say this drug is dangerous and would say don't take it. There are other routes for weight loss that are much more effective.8

Thank you, eating smaller portions is also my problem as well lol. Cooking smaller amounts is a great idea that I plan on incorporating, thanks again.2 -

I mean exactly what I just said. Yes I have been tracking my calories with a healthy goal, I have worked out consistently for about 4 months. I'm no idiot and don't try to imply that I am one. I have weighed and measured myself under the same conditions. If you're here to judge someone, which is indeed sad you can honestly get the *kitten* off the post.
@kommodevaran wasn't implying anything, just pointing out very common things that many overlook when they are trying to lose weight. There was nothing there implying you are an idiot, just a request for more information or for you to ask yourself those serious questionskiaramonroe772 wrote: »

and in the next answer, you give the bolded statement, which indicates that perhaps your eating is not always as on track as you claimed in the first response. If portion sizes are a consistent problem, it can wipe out any deficit you had the rest of the time. Accurately weighing and logging your food can give you a clearer idea of what those larger portions you are eating may do to any deficit you are trying to achieve.
As far as a drug to "kickstart" your diet, it's not going to have any real or long lasting effect if you don't get a handle on the rest of it. You may lose a little in the short term (though doubtful) but it will come back quickly when you revert back to habits that may not be helping achieve your goals.
You might also think about making your food diary public so that if there are any obvious things in there, people can help you out. (incorrect items from the database, etc)13 -

I see what you are saying and I already stated I have to work on portions. However you are not @kommodevaran and can't speak on their behalf. What they said did not seem to be helpful questions in order for me to succeed it seemed to be more judgement than anything else.4 -
My doctor had me use Phentermine earlier this year. I did it for 60 days, and it really helped me re-adjust my relationship with food. After 60 days I realized that I could function just fine without eating so much, and I stopped taking it. I've lost another 50+ pounds since I stopped taking it, so I don't think it did any harm.15

What a lovely attitude. I'm sure plenty of people will be jumping in with helpful responses now.26 -

wow, ok.
I wish you the best of success with your journey. (and if you were more familiar with the boards, @kommodevaran is very helpful) I hope someone else can provide you with the answers you want to hear.13 -

It's amazing weighing food too and learning what a portion really is. I was shocked to see how small an ounce of anything is, yet it is satisfying.

There wasn't anything judgemental about what kommode said. At all. They are bog standards questions that need to be asked when someone says they can't lose weight. You are reading it projecting your own feelings.
And science dictates that if you're not losing weight you're eating too much. Knowing whether it's a compliance issue or an incorrect logging issue dictates the advice you will receive.
The regulars on this forum know a hell of a lot and also offer learned experience through their own weight loss, it's a great resource if you're willing to learn.17 -
I was on it back in 2007, Phentermine can be a good jump start, but most definitely get your ducks in a row as far as weighing and measuring your food. Your doctor will know if he/she can have you try it, but it can and may cause your blood pressure to go up and once that happens you will not be able to take it again. My doctor had to take me off it after 2 months (I lost 20 lbs during that time). It can also cause other problems, like any other drug people react differently.2

Heres my opinion based off of experience (lost 65 pounds in 3 months on it-yikes)
If you rely on phentermine to suppress your appetite so that you lose weight like I did you will gain the weight back. You will not learn the tools you need to keep the weight off. When you get off phentermine your appetite will return and you will not know how to manage it properly. (I gained back 90- yikes again)
If you DO choose to do this to reduce your appetite you should still eat MFPs recommended calories for the day and weigh & log everything. Establish these habits because these are the tools you need for maintenance or continued loss after getting off of Phen.
Over all though, I would recommend not using it at all. I now get heart palpitations occasionally and have to wonder.....
Just say no.
Also I am now down 73 pounds from my highest weight and the tools I have learned are paramount to my continued success.13 -
I'm one of those who couldn't lose weight, having tried everything out there, including weighing food. Finally joined a program where even the Nurse Practitioner ended up saying, "Wow. Your metabolism is abysmal." Long story short, she put me on phentermine. I have been on it for about 4 months or so now and I'm down about 18 pounds (29 pounds from my highest all-time weight). Zero side effects. That being said, she also decided to add in Victoza and most recently, zinosamide. I've hardly had to adjust my eating because by all accounts, I should have been losing weight all these years; my body just thought differently. I am not promoting any of these medications because I don't know what it'll be like once I stop them. Just wanted to share my experience.
(BTW, there's a difference between phentermine and phen-phen (Fen-Fen?) of the 90s that caused cardiac problems.)0 -

Uhh...what kind of a narrow-minded statement is this?! If you are seriously struggling with certain issues (including weight-related) and meet with a qualified licensed professional (ie. an MD) and the appropriate drug(s) is deemed a potentially helpful/successful treatment or aid (irregardless of where you are at in your journey to a 'new and improved' life); then that is a decision YOU have every right to make (without someone being so quick to call it 'foolish' or 'sad'!)...Everyone is DIFFERENT and a 'black and white' approach isn't always the answer! Phentermine may actually help...if Interested, look into it and bring it up with your doc!1

Uh, no! Phentermine is unnecessary and can be dangerous to your health. If you need a little bump in energy, coffee has lots of benefits8 -

Yep. Coffee, FTW!!!12 -
I used it for a while when you could order it online from Mexico or where ever. It works. But when I had to quit taking it, I gained it all back plus 15 pounds, 105 to 140, putting me the heaviest I'd ever been.
It was just a waste of money. And when I came off it, I had gallbladder problems. It may have been a coincidence, but I doubt it.
Stick to the caffeine, exercise, portion control, maybe some vitamin B12.
Good luck.0 -
I'm currently on Phentermine. I've lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks. I'm eating anywhere from 1500 to 1800 calories a day. I'm losing weight because of the increased energy. No side effects6

Listen, I know what the H i'm talking about... ALL PRESCRIPTION DRUGS that can be legitimately prescribed (meaning they are UN-BANNED in America or wherever) have potential side effects (obviously, some more than others)...but that doesn't mean U will necessarily be negatively effected or one should automatically rule them out! It's between her and her doctor (primary, psychiatrist, etc.) to access/determine whether the advantages/benefits could outrule the disadvantages (and sometimes trial & error is necessary).
The choice is personal --and up to her and her physician.
And ordering drugs (especially controlled) on the internet from another country, etc. without a legitimate prescription isn't very wise because it's illegal/you don't know what you're actually getting and whether the active ingredient is REAL7 -
