If it's not a liquid and I'm eating it, it gets weighed. Liquids get the measuring cup. Only liquids in the measuring cup. So to answer your question, Yes, I weigh ice cream.

Edit to add: In grams. (I keep forgetting that weighing in grams isn't second nature to everyone dieting.)

I was pleasantly surprised to find calories of the weighed version was lower than the calories in the spoonfuls I'd been using! Calorie savings!!!

Yes. Ice cream with lots of air whipped in is going to be lighter in calories. Not all ice creams are the same in this regard. Measuring cups just don't capture this.

Exactly. In the US, cheap ice cream with air whipped into it weighs between 65 to 80g per half cup, the "suggested" serving size. Premium ice cream weighs between 95 to 105g per half cup.

Ice cream is one of the few foods that I always weigh. It can be very calorie dense, so little errors can mean a big difference in calories.

Yes, of course. And my yogurt and everything.

No because I only ever eat the whole tub (now I'll wait for someone to tell me that serving sizes can vary by up to 20%).

    Yes.

But like trigden, not if it is a set serving size - eg I buy a box of individually wrapped ice cream squares and I take them to be the weight the package says they are - or if not, that it will average out.

But I do that with all packaged items - contrary to MFP popular advice of weighing them to see if they are more or less than they say they are

    do not eat ice cream

And why exactly are you offering this advice? Ice cream is perfectly fine to eat while reducing your calorie intake. And they didn't ask whether or not they should eat it, they just asked if we weigh it.

Of course. Ice cream volume varies by how much air is whipped into it. Even using the box volumes, it the same ice cream could settle differently after each use and won't always be precisely the same. I actually weigh all my food items regardless, even liquids.

    better to not eat it

Why? the OP obviously want to eat Ice cream as they are asking the questions. If they weigh accurately and stick to their calories they will still hit their goals.

i usually eat ice cream from a local shop that's 97% fat free, but i still log it and weigh it.

Yes I also would like to know why.

Lost weight and then successfully maintained for over 2 years, eating ice cream several times per week.

I've lost nearly 118 lbs while still eating ice cream. Explain to me how not eating it would have been any better? Actually, I can save you the trouble... Guess what? It wouldn't be any better. In fact denying myself something I want can make it worse. I'll stick to my way. It obviously works for me just fine.

Yes, always weigh it, even if I'm not actually logging.

Is this so you can keep a mental note of calories? Or just because you can.

Even when I'm not logging I like to eat about a serving size (or particular size I know from experience works for me) of certain foods that I don't eyeball well. Pasta (because I always think it's going to be less than it is when dry) and ice cream (probably because I can lie to myself easy about how much it is, especially if my favorite little bowl is in the dish washer) are two main examples. So, yeah, because I want to be honest with myself about the calories involved (and usually have 200-250 calories) even when not logging.

No. I haven't seen an ice cream package that listed an actual weight. It's either 1/2 cup or 125 mL. I use a #8 food scoop which equals 1/2 cup. I also serve it in tiny bowls so I don't feel like it was a complete waste of time.

Yes, and I've actually started portioning it ahead of time! I can't believe I never thought of doing that before now. I'm not sure why quite why it works for me because I could just as easily grab two single portions out of the freezer, but I don't!

Makes sense to me. It is incredibly easy to underestimate portion sizes from eyeballing I find.
