Unexpected results of weight loss

When I was at my heaviest and I'd go clothes shopping I could never find anything I liked. I told my husband clothes must have gotten uglier and I hated having to buy new clothes. Turns out I just didn't like the clothes that were available in my size. I love clothes shopping now and have actually managed to buy so many new things that I've run out of room in my closet.21

Maybe it's all in my head,but i think my body has adjusted to a better way of eating because i get sick whenever i eat too much junk. Which stops me from eating too much junk22

No - alas, it is not because of confidence - or at least not entirely. There is a point at which you lose enough weight to fit into whatever people's idea of "normal body range" is. For me, it started at about size 20. Suddenly, I was visible - to everyone. I was no longer "that fat lady" from whom they had previously averted their eyes.

Too much sugar (as in 3/4 of a piece of cake) now causes an explosive, cleansing reaction. It's a good thing for me to "pay" for a cheat, keeps me on the straighter and narrower.8

I have definitely found the same thing. I started at size 22W. After I dropped a few pounds, people would pat me on the back and tell me "Great Job! I'm so proud of you for trying to lose weight!" Now that I have got down to size 16 and am still dropping steadily, these people seem a tiny bit scared. I can't explain it, but they seem to be somewhat alarmed that one of the Fat People will soon be infiltrating the Normal People ranks. There isn't much they can do except try to feed me candy and cake, which they do with ever increasing frequency. It is like they expected me do lose 10 pounds, then give up, so they could all feel sorry for me. They sincerely do not know what to do with me now. It is kind of funny, but also sad.44 -

Some of it also is, people don't want them (the overweight person) to think they are staring because someone is overweight.14 -
Jeans are actually comfortable!
I always suspected that jeans were just more comfortable on smaller people because thin people seemed to have to issues with wearing them for long periods of time where I couldn't stand them for most things.
Turns out my theory was right...now that I don't have a bunch of extra stomach/hip fat they fit me comfortably sitting down or standing and I'm not always having to tug them up to try and cover love handles.16 -

My knees as well. Also my hips, if I lay on the ground, SHOES. I went down a size when I lost the bulk of my weight, and like other have said, my rings. I needed to get them resized.
Also seeing my collar bones for the first time in years made me cry, I don't think it clicked until then how much I had lost because I was just too stuck in my own mind of thinking I know how I look that I didn't really notice a difference in my appearance until I seen them in the mirror.10 -

I discovered I'm not as immune to the cold as I always thought I was. I guess carrying around 140 pounds of subdermal insulation really kept me a lot warmer!
I'm hoping the converse is also true and that I no longer wither and die in the face of heat... particularly as I'm traveling to tropical Africa soon...21 -

I'd be interested in the answer to this one! Not that I plan to travel anywhere, but it can get quite hot (to me, anyway) here in the summer (on and off, fortunately, not constant heat!) and I really dislike it. Plus it makes my feet and ankles puff up. So I'm really hoping that I won't feel so hot next summer!
(I don't like being cold either, but at least you can put on extra layers or turn up the heating in that case! And after a couple of mild winters we've suddenly been hit with some very cold temperatures and I'm having to wear a minimum of three layers indoors. I wore five to go out this morning, and I'm so glad I can fit into my really good winter coat again. I miss my thicker layer of blubber right now, and I still have some of it left so I'm already dreading next winter...!)6 -

Definitely true for me. I handle heat and humidity much better than when I had 90lbs of insulation to haul around. I also no longer have sweat stains on all my white shirts. I used to think it was my laundry detergent, but nope. I just sweat a lot - even in cooler weather or air conditioning.

I find myself handling the hot dry Summers a lot better, but if I'm being a bit of a sloth I still find that my feet and ankles swell up (even more so if it's humid). Granted, I still have about 20kg to go, so maybe it'll change in another year. Being in a place that doesn't snow, I don't have to worry about the cold too much, but I'm definitely noticing it more on the days that its only 1 or 2 degrees above freezing.2 -

Good to know, thank you! It's very dry here so there's not generally an issue with humidity, but I think the swelling might be some combination of heat, inactivity and excess weight (along with hormonal input at times, most likely!). I've been checked out by my doctor and she couldn't find any medical reason for it. I did notice that it didn't happen quite so much this summer as last year, so I'm hoping that next year will be even better!1 -

Sleeping better, I think at my peak weight I was borderline with sleep apnea.
I was surprised at how little weight loss it took to get off diabetic meds.

How much easier it is to fold smaller clothes. Just folded a pair of my old 50" jeans, and a XXXL shirt, and it too longer/was harder than folding a pair of 36" jeans and a M shirt.
Looking forward to that and the other implications: more room in dresser drawers and closet space...
My 5-8 year-old kids have found uses for my old big-man clothes: Each kid fits inside a pant leg and pops his head out of the waist... This reminds me of a relay race we did in a block party: we borrowed some clothes from a rather obese man in our neighborhood. Each team member had to put on a set of this man's clothes (which fit over us without ample space) that included shirt, pants, belt, and shoes, eat a saltine cracker, and while chewing, try to whistle. Then we took everything back off and it was the next person's turn. First team to have all members complete the process won.
Little did I think **I** would eventually be that "rather obese man"!!!14 -
My heart beat, I feel it a lot, it is particularly bothersome when I lay on my left side.4

That I would actually look forward to meeting the owner of a local gym to become a member so I can start adding regular exercise to my journal!7

I learned that what worked for me in the beginning may not work anymore now that I'm about 14 from goal. I've lost 68 pounds over the last 13 months, incorporating IF and fasted cardio. This morning I skipped breakfast as usual and took my beta blocker (that I probably don't need anymore) and had a pretty scary incident at the gym. I've never had blood sugar problems in my life, it's crazy how your body changes. I've learned my lesson, I never want to feel that way again!17

I never expected that with the weight gone that I would then be confronted by other real issues in my life that need to be addressed. I never expected to see that the weight was a smoke screen, so to speak -- and it really took up 100% of my thinking. Now that I'm not spending all day, every day dealing in some way with my weight, other issues and emotions that would not get any attention are front and center. I never expected that or the actual issues themselves.
Losing weight makes me have more compassion for myself.

I've lost 15 lbs so far. Today I did meal prep for 1.5 hours on a kitchen floor that would typically send me to a chair after 45 minutes. My feet and back didn't hurt when I was finished. Instead of sitting down, I took my kid out to the nature center and purposely stayed on my feet the entire time he looked at exhibits with friends. I didn't realize the difference until I was reading this thread. I kept blaming the kitchen floor for my lack of time spent in the kitchen. I may actually enjoy cooking again.24

Absolutely true for me. I used to HATE the heat. This past summer I wore scarves, long sleeved t-shirts and pants unless the temp was over 27 Celsius. And once it got real hot 28-35, a tank top and shorts was fine and I was so comfortable. But winter, sheesh, I can't warm up. Socks, slippers, fleece lined leggings, long sleeved shirt, hoodie, scarf. And that's inside! When I'm outside I'm in full parka outfit mode! I bought snowpants for school pickup!10
