I'm heading out in a few minutes to go pheasant hunting in South Dakota so I wont' be posting for a few days.
Last run was Friday night during a heavy snowfall. Kody & I enjoyed 9 miles of wonderful, beautiful snow!!
I wanted to get a run in today when it was -22F (-34F wind chill), just to say I did it, but I had to finish packing for hunting. Kody knows what I'm am doing and he can't wait to get out there!
Enjoy your runs, all!!

@Orphia your running trail looks awesome!
@louubelle16 Congratulations on your HM PB
@MobyCarp Congratulations on your win in such difficult conditions, love the antlers and trophy collection.
@juliet3455 You win bragging rights for running in the coldest weather, that's just nasty!
I ran on my treadmill today. We had snow and freezing rain here last night and today and I decided the ground was just too slippery to try running outside.

@MobyCarp love the trophy. Good thing you posted an antler picture or it didn't happen. Sounded like you needed ice skates.
@louubelle16 super HM congratulations!!
Took Skip to Fleet Feet yesterday for new shoes. The owner had way too many new toys to show us. A $200 battery operated foam roller ha ha on high Skip was getting moved around the floor. Also these air compression leg sleeve things you use after you run. $1600. I'll take 2! You can use theirs for $100 for 30 minutes. Skip was very happy with new Brooks Hyperions, new Nike vest, new Brooks 1/4 zip jacket, banjees by Sprigs, it's a wrist wallet with 2 pockets very cool. She even got a free Brooks water bottle. Merry Christmas to her lol

I haven't checked or kept up with the thread the past few days due to family in town and being busy with work. A few notes from the past few days below.
Friday I felt a bit under the weather and had more shin and knee pain than I'd like, so I took another rest day. I also decided that if I couldn't run outside in regular road shoes, then I need to run on the treadmill as I then the traction aids I was using were partially contributing to the knee/shin pain. The Friday rest day helped a bit and Saturday I ran 5 miles (48:21, 9:40 pace) but was forced onto the treadmill due to very icy conditions. Today was the same deal with the ice and so I dragged myself to the gym for 9 miles on the dreadmill 1:28:28 (9:50 pace). I saw a few others getting their long runs in on the treadmill too (including one guy who ran almost 12 miles in the same time I ran my 9), so at least we were in misery together. I'm happy to report I ordered a pair of trail shoes today! Also, the road conditions seemed to be a lot better this afternoon, so I may get to run outside tomorrow.1 -

Wow! That's what I get for complaining about the warm weather. We went from 74F yesterday to a brisk 35F for our run today. Gotta love Houston! At least it was dry and not rainy. (I can handle the cold or the rain but the two of them together are a special kind of suck!) Mike, Fergus and I went out anyway and got 7 miles done. This is my longest distance since I have been back to running so, yay me! Average pace was just under a 12 minute mile. I tried to go a little slower, but the cold kept us moving.
@MobyCarp What a fun race! Nice trophies, too!
Have a fabulous rest of the day everyone!

Got back at 9pm from dropping my daughter back at her mums after spending the day at my brothers place, so popped out for quick run very similar to last night. Unfortunately phone died so I just downloaded yesterdays GPX, altered the time stamps to today and uploaded it again so I have some sort of record of it, (even though today's route was probably ~300m longer - close enough for govt work!).
My daughter (3yo) and two nephews, (3/5yo) have worn me out so back from run and now straight to bed for me!

Treadmill at the Y again today. This morning it was sleeting and I had to go out for errands in the afternoon so just packed my stuff to get a run in on the way home. Started a new audiobook but had trouble getting into it until I was nearing the end of the run. Hopefully it will be pretty interesting.
Tomorrow I'm off to Lake Placid! I'll hopefully update with some running while I'm there.2 -
Did some inside miles today to get caught up a bit.

42 or so laps inside the big dome this morning. Like last weekend's long run, not horrible and actually better than you might think. There's a lot to be said for escaping negative double digit air temps and trading a consistent sports turf surface for the icy crap out on the roads and paths.
I missed my mid week run this week, and cut today's run off short (was scheduled for 11). Hoping to get back on track this coming week.
Happy running all (and stay warm)!

Finally got to run today after three days of not being able to. Felt good, managed to get 7.1 miles done. On the treadmill because it's - 2F out there. Just say no to frostbite.
Here's hoping I don't have another three day rest any time soon.2 -
@garygse and @ddmom0811 Thanks for the infos on the noxgear. AAA batteries I could replace with some chargeable ones, and they even offer free international shipping at the moment... Very tempting!
@kristinegift @MNLittleFinn @katharmonic and @7lenny7 nice snow/winter running pictures, all of you! We only had two days of snow yet this winter, photos like that make me appreciate the mild weather a lot
@louubelle16 Congratulations on that awesome half! Wow, you really smashed your goal, great job!
@juliet3455 Remind me not to ever visit your area in winter. I think the coldest I've ever been in was -12°C, and that was cold! The temparatures you run in are impressive. And scary. Even while wearing lots of layers, doesn't the cold air hurt when you breathe it in? I'd probably end up wraping so many layers of scarfs around my head that I couldn't get air through them anymore.
@Orphia Lovely route. And nice Santa decoration ^^
@MobyCarp Your speed is seriously impressive! Your "slowest 5k ever" on bad road conditions is still faster than my PR, wow. Congratulations! And I love the reindeer hat
@HonuNui Have fun with the new treadmill!
@patrikc333 17 miles in those conditions sound really miserable. I hope your bike ride tomorrow is more fun!
@skippygirlsmom Sound like it was a really successful shopping trip for Skip! Did you get yourself a Christmas present too? I'm really intreaged about the 1600$ air compression thingies now. If I ever win the lottery maybe...
---
The construction works on my little neighbourhood hill are finished; I decided to celebrate that with a few hill repeats instead of the tempo run I had originally planned. Usually I only do 4-6 loops up and down, but I missed that climb I had just finished #8 when everything around me went dark - power cut! Guess somebody overdid it with the Christmas lights... I don't even remember the last time something like that happened (apart from maybe a short flicker during a thunderstorm), so I decided to run home, light candles and "enjoy" it. But whatever was wrong, they fixed it too quickly - 5 min later the power was already back.
My Sunday run was really nice - sunshine! The last time I saw a blue sky must be a month ago. The forecast for tomorrow is fog again, but today the weather was perfect (maybe it could have been a little warmer or colder - as it was (0°C/32°F), I kept taking off and putting back the gloves...). My legs were feeling a bit tired from those hill repeats yesterday, but this was too good to miss; so I ran over to one of my favourite river side trails. It's not very long (~3.3km), and it's about 9km away from home (half small roads, half fields&forest), so the way there and back is much longer than the actual trail. But it's both beautiful and fun enough that it's worth it every time

@_nikkiwolf_ I understand not visiting in the winter - Unless you are a Skier then we have some amazing Hills in the Canadian Rockies. Next year is Canada's 150th BD so lots of activities planned for July 1 all around the country. Also there are some fantastic summer HM, M and Ultra Races. So come on up for a RunCation.
For me the cold air doesn't hurt when I breathe. I wear a Neck Buff with about 8" of Fleece and then 12" of shear material that I pull up over my ears as a 2nd level of protection. I leave my nose/mouth open to the elements without any trouble. I credit my Norwegian/Ukrainian heritage.
Envy all the people still able to get out and run on the trails. We are severely restricted now, more of a personal safety issue than snow. The last place I want to be is 8 km out of town on a Bushy and end up with a sprained ankle or some other injury that makes for a long cold hobble back to safety.
Yesterday morning we had the nasty West wind 25km/h which set the wind chill factor at -42C.
In the afternoon warmed up to -20C and wind has dropped to -15km/h so wind chill was a mild -29C.
This morning it was -10C at 5am - no wind, at 10am it was 0C. So we had a 42C temperature change in less than 24 Hours.
Went for a 6 km morning run to get in a few of the km's I missed yesterday and more km's logged for the year. Saved some energy for the afternoon 5 km Jingle Jog - Fund raiser for Santa's Anonymous, Christmas Bureau and Food Bank donations. A total of 11 km for the day.

I had a good run today for my HM - no PB for me though.
I did however get to meet another MFP friend and her husband at the race, @mom3over40! We had a nice chat in the cold morning (37F) before we took off running!
This was us in the cold before the race started
And this was the gorgeous view taken while running of the clear morning - you could see all the way to the ocean.
I will update miles tomorrow. Tonight I need to sleep. I am feeling very tired and a bit defeated... I wanted a PB and felt like I was on track and running better than I thought I would be able to given the Achilles issue. I am not sure what was different this year vs the previous years... I was over 10 mins off my best time and that seems huge to me. Hopefully tomorrow will bring a better perspective.

Nominal mileage goal: 100 miles
Real goal, get into the swing of Marathon training, and get used to doing 3 days a week of some strength/core while running 35+ MPW
Today's notes: Today's assignment was 6x400m at 8:52 pace with 2 mile w/u and 1 mile c/d. Since I was still feeling the cold from Saturday's run, I ran my miles on the treadmill. My paces were all a bit off, since it's not really exact finding the right speed on the TM, to match assigned pace. ended up cutting 2 of my recovery periods short too. All in all a pretty good run though.
After the run I had my strength routine. today's assignment was:
100 kettlebell swings
100 rows
100 bicep curls
100 calf raises
100 chest flys
100 goblet squats
100 mountain climbers
100 russian twist
I did 2 sets of 50 for each, going through the first set of all the exercises then repeating the process.2 -
@_nikkiwolf_ here is their link to the "legs" ha ha http://www.fleetfeethuntsville.com/community/normatec-recovery
I got to keep the Brooks water bottle, wasn't that sweet of her ha ha Skip will be very happy Christmas morning, I also picked up (when she wasn't with me) an awesome Nike running jacket and Nike long running pants for her. The team has to wear Nike during meets and are supposed to wear black Nike during practice - seriously insane crap if you ask me. I almost gave her the jacket last night to wear to practice since it's was like 25F but Coach sent an email he would practice indoors this morning instead. We did very well on price, the Brooks clothing was buy one get 50%, she had a $20 first place finish gift card, I had a $25 loyal buyer credit and she gets 15% off for running on a school team. So it wasn't too painful.
Here is a link to the wrist wallet she got too: http://sprigs.com/banjees/2-pocket-phone-banjees/?gclid=CjwKEAiAp97CBRDr2Oyl-faxqRMSJABx4kh9hyK8uKdb8OVuF4nu2bGVM5zfUP2y8wXJ36SnTGWovxoCoSDw_wcB
She has such little arms that she can't seem to find anything to fit on her arm for her phone, at least nothing comfortable that we don't have to rig. This fit around her bicep comfortably and she thought it wouldn't bother her to wear it. I really don't like her running when I'm not home without a phone, but she usually does it because she hates to carry it. Hopefully this will solve that problem.
@shanaber and @mom3over40 how awesome you got to meet!!! Shanaber sorry it didn't go as expected, nothing worse then feeling good and not having the time you want, but congrats on the HM.
@7lenny7 your picture reminded me, at the marathon last weekend we took turns on who had to put the medal on the face of runners with frozen snot/sweat/whatever on their mustaches and beards ha ha1 -
Happy Monday everyone!
Busy weekend, as I am sure you can all relate during this time of year. I did not have a chance to check in. heck, I haven't even had a chance to upload my runs to Strava since Thursday. But I did manage to squeeze my runs in this weekend. Our "Steve" marathon/HM on Saturday was much fun. I ended up running with the 9:30 pace group because that is where most of the people I knew were running. Also, even though temps were warming up, the roads were still pretty ice covered. The whole group made it a point to stick together as much as possible and to wait for folks who were straggling to catch up so that we could all finish together. It is the true definition of running camaraderie. And then eating all of the great food at the end. Great time!
Sunday temps turned back to bitter cold. I used Stella as my motivation to get me out the door. We did two solid miles together and at that point I felt plenty warmed up to finish it up the 5.5 on my own. Was a good way to start off the day before heading down to the stadium for a frozen tailgate before the Bengals-Steelers game.
Looks like many of you had quite eventful weekends as well.
@louubelle16 -Awesome job on the PR! That is a pretty amazing gain in such a short time. Congrats!
@MobyCarp -Great job on you run too! Those age group awards are some of the best I have seen. I have never gotten anything quite that exciting!
@shanaber and @mom3over40 -How cool is that??? Looks like a great time!
