So, as an evil way to get a training partner, I'm trying to get a coworker to sign up for the same marathon as me. Not sure he's up to it, but he's done Tri's and is on ski patrol, so he does have some cardio base to work with.

@7lenny7 I love Caribou! I try to stop there whenever I am in Minnesota/Wisconsin. I either grab it at the airport or in my hometown. Or both.

22 of 50 so far, on schedule but no wiggle room. I might have to pick up a running day here or there but we will see, pretty worn out by Sunday with my new routine.

After see all the posts about the cold I am now really happy I live in the desert where it is warm. On Thursday we should be having perfect December weather with a high of 80 degrees :)

Saturday when I went out for my long run, I wore capris, a tshirt with sleeves and gloves. I took the gloves off after about 3-4 miles. The sleeves came off after my first loop (about 8 miles). This morning I went out in shorts and t-shirt. Best time of year here!

..... you spend the weekend prostrate with a bug picked up from your grandchildren and this thread seems to go into overdrive.

Some amazing photos: eyelash icicles, seaslugs, amazing Christmas trees and snowy landscapes - to name a few.

..... and some excellent runs, even if people felt they could have done better - a view I buy into in all parts of life - even if it's just a minor tweak. But celebrating achievements is also part of the formula!!

I'm kind of tempted to be wimpy tomorrow morning and put in my 5 miles on the treadmill. It's supposed to be -6F (-21C) with WNW winds at 12mph with a windchill of -25F (-31C).

Actually looks like the rest of the week could be on the dreadmill (high of -2 on Thursday)....only day with a projected high above 0F is Friday, and that's an inside/gym day anyway...though I may run my 12 miler on Saturday outside...the thought of 2 hours on a treadmill sounds awful....If I can get some REALLY good tights first, projected high is -5

Still feel like *kitten*. Gonna stay home with chicken soup and Monday night football. I walked down the stairs at work and my calf didn't like that at all. Probably best to give it another day.

Icky cold + sore calf = nope.

    Tomorrow is another day.

    12/10: 13.1 miles
    12/11: 4.6 miles on trails
    12/12: 2 miles + lifting

2 quick treadmill miles after a lifting sesh tonight. Followed by a bit more car talk and an agreed upon price with the dealership. Once my insurance transfers and my loan is deposited tomorrow, I am free to sign the paperwork and take my new baby home! I'm excited to drive something new, but I wish I was more wholly excited about it... I'm also really, really sad that this means an end to the good times with my 1997 Civic... I love that thing despite it's hellishly long clutch pedal and slowly deteriorating undercarriage. Saying goodbye to that Old Man Car is going to be tougher than running a marathon, let me tell you! ;)

@MNLittleFinn - I'd think 15 lbs. would be way too light to feel a benefit from kettlebell swings. For reference, right now I do Turkish get-ups with a 35 lb. kettlebell, and that's a bit challenging. 30 lbs would be routine for TGUs, and 25 lbs. would feel easy. I do swings with 40 lb. KB. Could use 45 lb., but I typically want to transition directly from swings to snatches, and 45 lbs. is too aggressive for me and KB snatches right now. I probably could swing a 55 lb. kettlebell, but 45 is the heaviest I own.

@lissadecker - Pacing can get easier with practice, but individual experiences on how quickly it gets easier vary widely. I learned to hold a steady pace by first, running with a pace leader; later, seeking to keep my Garmin close to the desired current pace. Over time, I learned what easy, T (as in "threshold"), I (as in "interval"), and R (as in "repeat") should feel like; I still struggle with MP (as in "marathon pace.") But if I watch my Garmin, I can be the pace leader at a nominal pace of 8:30 or 8:00 per mile and bring the group in reasonably close to target pace. Two and a half years ago, the only way I could hold a steady 8:30 or 8:00 pace was following an experienced pace leader.

@MobyCarp that's why I'm thinking about putting my 12kg bell in my truck for those days. The 15# felt like nothing. My 12kg is about as big as I can handle right now.

    12/11 – 2.57 easy
    12/12 – 10.15 easy

December total to date – 53.40

Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Finish transition to healthy running. Use Club Nationals as a learning experience on managing air travel to a race. Build a base toward Boston training. Avoid re-injury

Today's notes – I didn't run very far yesterday, and it was a bit slower than I would run solo because I was chatting with my roommate. Then I had an awful lot of sitting time getting home from 62º F (17º C) in Tallahassee to 28º F (-2º C) and snowing in Rochester. The landing on a snow-covered runway was, um, interesting.

Between the late flight and the weather, I didn't get to bed until almost 2 AM. Of course, the cat had been lonely and wouldn't stand for me sleeping too late; so I was up at 7, with less than 5 hours of sleep. The nice thing about being retired was I could wait till 10 to shovel the driveway. Then I had a nap, and ended up getting out for a run some time past 3 PM. At that point, it was 37º F (3º C), with wet pavement and snow covered grass and sidewalks. The streets were well cleared, so I felt okay running in road shoes.

Set out to run at least 7 miles, and the recovering Achilles let me get 10 in. Yesterday was pretty close to a rest day, and Saturday was more like a tempo workout than a long run, so doing a long run today fit in pretty well. And I was able to run far enough to call it a long run! This is both the longest continual distance and the longest continual time I've run since injury. That's an ego boost, and now I'm fairly confident I'll be able to run 13 miles for the Winter Warrior Half in January.

I'm feeling good enough that I'm about 80% decided to sign up for the Reindeer Run 5K next Saturday. I'll pay a bit more for registering late, and they may be out of antlers and/or shirts; but I have enough cotton race shirts, and I have antlers from running it in prior years. It's fun, and the toy-themed trophies are cute. (Toy-themed because the race is run to benefit the Strong Museum of Play.) Of course, to get a toy-themed trophy I have to place in my age group; but I don't expect the 60 year old guys who were faster than me last Saturday to show up for Reindeer Run next Saturday.

Good plan. 12kg is heavy enough to learn swings and snatches, and probably any other dynamic KB moves your aunt throws at you.

We got ~7" of snow over the last 36 hours but I was still able to get in three lovely, snowy miles this afternoon. The good news is that running over ice/snow is great for cadence (which I'm actively working to increase!) but not so great for pace haha. Everything was so beautiful out by the lake today though so I didn't mind taking it a little slower.

I’m so grateful that I get to live and run in such a beautiful city as Chicago!

Thanks @juliet3455 , @7lenny7 , and @ddmom0811 for the congratulations! I still have 1-2 years of thesis research left before I actually get my PhD but at least the coursework is done now and I can focus on the thesis itself :)

Sorry I haven't really been able to keep up with all the posts lately. I've been pretty busy lately and this week isn't any different. I'll try to catch up soon!

    12/1: 5 miles
    12/2: 4 miles
    12/3: 4 miles
    12/4: 11 miles
    12/5: 5 miles
    12/6: 7 miles
    12/7: rest day
    12/8: 4 miles
    12/9: rest day
    12/10: 5 miles
    12/11: 11 miles
    12/12: 4 miles

    TOTAL: 58 miles

4 miles in 39:50 (9:58 pace) today on the dreamill! It actually wasn't so bad once I got into a groove after the first mile or so. I really wanted to up my pace, but I let myself go fast for one song and then made myself slow. My dad and I go to the same gym and we usually end up there at the same time when I go. That happened today as well, so we ran on treadmills next to each other. Unfortunately, I forgot my inhaler so I had a few coughing fits afterward but luckily that didn't last too long.
