@skippygirlsmom - wow - those holiday runs! Loved the jacket discussion. Sadly I never need a jacket for running where I am. I just have one and one long sleeve shirt. The most I've ever had to do was wear both and then I got so hot, had to remove the jacket. Since I headed to NYC Monday, I have no idea what I will wear!

@7lenny7 - you've got some competition on your Christmas tree run!

@MNLittleFinn - good idea to hold back on miles today!

@louubelle16 - that pub run sounds so fun! As does your running group!

    12/1 - 3.2 miles
    12/2 - 1.5 miles
    12/3 - 45 miles biking + 1 mile run
    12/4 - 27 miles biking + 1 mile run
    12/5 - 4 miles
    12/6 - 4 miles
12/7 - 1 mile on treadmill for streak (after strength training)
    12/8 - 4.47 miles
12/9 - 1 mile on treadmill for streak (after strength training)
12/10 - 77 miles bike and 1 mile run for streak!
12/11 - 27 miles biking and 1 mile run for streak
    12/12 - 4 miles
    12/13 - 5 miles
    12/14 - 2.1 miles - day 21 streak + strength training
    12/15 - 4.5 miles
    12/16 - 1.5 miles
    12/17 = 44 miles biking + 1 mile run
    12/18 - 27 miles biking + 1 mile run
    12/19 - 4 miles
    12/20 - 6.07 miles
    12/21 - 5.02 miles
    12/22 - 5.4 miles
12/23 - 2.25 miles Rest day - so this was just for the Holiday Streak!

    Upcoming races
    2/5/17 - Daytona Beach HM
2/26/17 - Disney Princess HM Orlando

@skippygirlsmom Those Strava holiday runs are great, thanks for sharing. The snowman is so detailed, wow.

@MNLittleFinn Cutting that run short if you still have a chance to stave off the worst of the cold sounds reasonable. Better miss a few miles now than a week or two if you get really sick.

    @dkabambe Great run!

@shanaber Those pants are awesome! I'm always annoyed that running pants only seem to come in black, gray or that other gray.

@greenolivetree Yes, stairs are evil! Great exercise, but still evil >:)

@Louubelle16 sorry I was away and just saw the rain question. Looks like everyone gave great suggestions. Honestly I wear a light wear water repellent coat and it works fine for me. Skip who has bunch better *kitten* then me wears a new balance jacket she got at Fleet Feet, she's worn it in the pouring rain and not gotten wet. I can't recall what it's called dang. She loves it.

I posted the strava runs on our local running sit now some others have posted theirs too funny. This guy ran them on the trails, yipes!

Ran 5 miles today with Skip.

For those of you looking at Columbia, if you have a Kohl's near you they are are sale right now.

@greenolivetree I buy a lot of my running stuff at Walmart, it works for me. Skip is the one with the expense running clothes ha ha. Most of her stuff is Nike or Brooks. Nike because they tend to run smaller so they fit her 85 lbs 5'1" frame and also it's the brand of choice of the school so all her "practice gear" is Nike. Brooks because they make nice looking stuff, so jackets and shoes she does Brooks.

Oh yea joke on Skip, the Brooks water bottle she so nicely said I could have asking spending a million $ on her in Fleet Feet? It's a thermal bottle, hello score it's 14oz of keep things hot and cold yippee!!! me

@7lenny7 - as @mom3over40 said they gave them out with our packets but I actually brought one from a previous race. The ones in our packets were folded up in a very tiny package that is perfect for hiking, camping or an earthquake kit so I saved it :) I guess the organizers realized that us Californians are wimps in the cold and would not plan for it appropriately even if it was predicted to be in the mid-30's at the race start, so the gloves they handed out were very welcome. I wore mine for the first 3-4 miles.

@_nikkiwolf_ - the leggings are NIke and I got them on clearance last year. I couldn't pass up the price! I agree on the blah colors. But I am starting to see some hopeful signs with prints and designs, if they weren't just darned expensive! I keep looking for clearance ones to add to my collection though :)

@skippygirlsmom - awesome that you got at least a thermal bottle out of all of that! I would be too tempted to just buy myself something along with my daughter!

@orphia - great picture! I may have to try it. I also discovered I can remotely use my iPhone camera from my watch so I need to play with that too!

Getting ready to head out for a run as I am still not able to focus on getting any work done that I am supposed to be doing today!

@BeeerRunner congrats on the new PR! That's far bigger than any race I've been in. Sounds like quite an experience.
@greenolivetree When I used my Garmin FR220 on an indoor track, in indoor mode, it measured short. The track was 1/7th mile and after 7 laps it thought I had just run 0.93 miles.
    @HonuNui late Happy Birthday!
@mom3over40 great photos and GREAT RACE!!
We came to Mayo with 1 opening appointment with gastroenterology and we walked out with about 15 other appts.
That is the classic Mayo Clinic approach right there. Glad you made to Rochester safely. I was thinking about you guys when the snowstorm rolled through last weekend.

@skippygirlsmom Those are some amazing GPS tracks! Don't expect anything like that out of me. I have neither the time nor the creative mind to do something like that. Of course it does help if you have an open field like that, rather than being restricted by streets, trails and paths. Still, keeping your proper spacing must be really challenging.

Two non-running days in a row this week for me. Tuesday was a travel day, and it felt like I spent most of my time sitting around in trains or planes, but still I was wiped out when I arrived at my parents place. After a solid 11 hours of sleep, I still spend most of Wednesday lazing about, only did half an hour of strength training.

Thursday I went for a nice relaxed run along the coast. Today was less relaxed - my legs were feeling sore from the lunges and squats I did Wednesday night, so I figured I might as well "embrace the suck" and do some stair repeats on top of that B)
There are some long stairs (149 steps) near my parents home. I ran them four times, then I had enough and decided to head back home. Maybe I'll try to get up early before everyone else on Sunday and run them a few more times - that ought to burn at least half the Christmas meal calories at once!

    12/20 – 6.46 easy
    12/21 – unplanned rest day
    12/22 – 5.16 easy with fast finish
    12/23 – 5.18 easy plus one stride

December total to date – 116.47

Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Finish transition to healthy running. Use Club Nationals as a learning experience on managing air travel to a race. Build a base toward Boston training. Avoid re-injury

Today's notes – A reprise of yesterday's route, a couple degrees warmer, with clear shoulders today. Wore a pair of Kinvaras, and they sure felt light after several days of running in Peregrines! Mile 5 came in at 7:30 even though I was feeling like it was easy, so I ran a stride from mile 5 on the Garmin to my driveway to finish the run.

A sign of recovery is, I felt good. I felt like I could run more. But 5 miles is what I am allowed today, so that's where I stopped. I can run 13 miles tomorrow, and I'll be right where I want to be for the week. The month will come in over the nominal goal, because next week I'll target 40 miles.

@_nikkiwolf_ Travel is exhausting! I did more stairs today too. Only going up! I figured out going down hurts my calves so I ride the elevator down then climb up. Lol. Fitbit says 19 floors, but not all at once.

Spent the morning being domestic. I got laundry done and also did some cooking for tomorrow. I made a really yummy-smelling pasta salad with pesto (it's red, white and green for Christmas!) and also some cracker spread for appetizers. I'll be bringing those to my mom's tomorrow morning.

After all that was done, I had a nice 5.4 mile run followed by some good stretching. I more than likely will not hit my 100 mile goal for December, but 75-80 is totally doable. I'll probably have to keep my goal around there for January as well, because of weather and inevitable germs making me sick.

I hope everyone here has a very lovely holiday! I'm planning a nice long run for Christmas morning.

Even though I'd originally planned on running 9k easy this morning, I decided it would be a good opportunity to do some tired tempo running instead - admittedly I was also feeling lazy and didn't fancy an hour on my feet.

Started with 5 minute jog to warm up, then picked it up to marathon pace for 10 minutes and then a few minutes of lampost pickups - probably about 100m on/100m off. Had about a minute recovery jog when I reach the end of the path, then did another 3 slightly longer sprint intervals - probably about 200m each with the last being uphill. Taking out the warm up section I averaged about MP for 3.5km, and totalled 4.24k.

Have one last present to get, so going to brave town centre later - I'll destress by going to the gym so may hop on the treadmill whilst I'm there to make it up to a decent distance for the day.

I'm trying really, really hard to get to 2400 miles for the year (I'm currently at 2362.50 according to Garmin Connect) but my left hip flexor is making it very difficult. It's achy and poopy and we are not getting along these days. I'm just going to have to piece together enough 4 and 6 mile runs over the next week to get it to work. And then the first week of January I'm taking a week off to let my poor little hip recover. It's been sore since Philly marathon (11/20) but then the holiday run streak started on Thanksgiving, so I'm thinking I just didn't give it enough recovery time post-race. Oops.

Hope everyone is having a lovely holiday season!!

Christmas eve long run with the group. The rain that was forecast held off and it was nearly 40 degrees so it was kind of a treat. We had to stay on the paved roads rather than the trails because they were a mess, so that meant hills and more hills. Got it done, and now more room for pie!

@greenolivetree - thinking of you and your husband. Good for you for getting in some workouts during this stressful time. I hope it helps. You both must have been absolutely starving after that long day.

    Happy holidays, everyone.

Determined to get out to run this morning before driving to see my folks.

Fitted in my first ever Parkrun into a 7mile jaunt. Next time I'll get there a bit later as I had a bit of a wait for the start and my muscles had gone back to cold. The route is an evil one - straight up a hill for 2k, a 0.5k flat bit, then back down the hill to the finish.

Now a few days rest although my sister's dog will be expecting walkies.

    12/23 – 5.18 easy plus one stride
    12/24 – 13.00 paced run

December total to date – 1290.47

Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Finish transition to healthy running. Use Club Nationals as a learning experience on managing air travel to a race. Build a base toward Boston training. Avoid re-injury

Today's notes – Garmin says it was 43º F (6º C) when I ran this morning. It was pleasant, overcast to start with showers later in the run. There were some spots where I dodged snow, but mostly it was clear pavement and sidewalks. Wearing the road shoes worked well today.

Today was the first time this training session that I was able to run the distance for the pace group. Since it's Christmas Eve day, the group was not well attended. There were no 9:00 pacers, so my co-pace leader Jim and I went out with a hybrid 8:30/9:00 group. After a few miles, the normal 8:30 people pulled ahead of the guy who was normally in the 9:00 group. Jim went with the faster group, and I stayed with the slower guy.

Pacing 9:00 is not natural for me. My natural tendency is to run faster, and I have to make myself slow down for the capability of the people I'm pacing. I don't have a lot of practice at that pace, so it was an adventure. The first five miles were faster than 9:00, as we tried to split the difference; but mile 5 came in at 8:31, really too fast for the 9:00 guy. That's about where the group split. For much of the rest of the run I ran slower and slower to back off to the other guy's ability. Later I realized I was letting him drag me, and I should have been holding a 9:00 pace to pull him along. It averaged out okay, at a 9:08 average including the faster first 5 miles, and I survived. The good news for me personally is that my recovering Achilles really liked taking it easy.

So I look at my stats: 13.00 miles (including an OCD jog around the parking lot to hit 13) in 1:58:41, for an average pace of 9:08 per mile including stops at lights and to check route directions. Mile splits were more erratic than they should be on a paced run, ranging from 8:31 to 9:46; the slower miles included stopped time at the water stop or at lights. What happens when I force myself to run that slow? Max heart rate 128, average 116. HR in Zone 1 for 1:14:52, and below Zone 1 for the rest of the time. With that low a heart rate, I wonder how Garmin computed 1009 calories burned; but that's an academic question, because I don't eat to the calories Garmin claims I burn.

It was a nice pleasant run, with coffee and chocolate afterwards. I got in my car to head home when they were setting up for the start of the recreational Egg Nog Jog (2, 3, or 5 miles and drink a cup of egg nog afterwards). I don't need to run more miles today, and I had enough chocolate that egg nog on top of that would be inadvisable.

Now I'll have a quiet afternoon before getting to Christmas Eve services in the evening. Couldn't plan a better Christmas Eve. I hope the rest of the group is having as good a Christmas as I am.

I almost made it to 20 but my ankles & calves were killing me. It snowed yesterday & last night so I was running through slush, snow and at one point my right foot met a very cold puddle (while trying to avoid another puddle). There were hills too. Lots of them.

I was also wearing my trail shoes for traction and had never worn them for anything quite this long.

I am debating if I should try to do a couple miles tomorrow on tired legs to hit 20ish.

Yesterday afternoon I twisted my knee a little when I was opening a really tough sliding door. It was painful and then when I was walking around all was fine except every once in a while I would feel a pain. So I practiced on bike prior to heading out in the group, and all was fine on the bike. It never hurt once. Then, of course, I had my 1 mile run for the streak. I set out and told myself if there is ANY pain I would stop. No pain, but I ran very slow - like a 12 minute mile so as to not twist or trip or anything (plus by that time it was almost 80 degrees).
So while I've been running around the house getting things ready, I am having a twinge of pain here and there if I twist. So being very careful! Hopefully it will all be fine tomorrow! Hubby and I celebrated 31 year anniversary today and since we don't have to be anywhere until 3 tomorrow we might go for a bike ride in the morning. We fly to NYC on Monday morning so I may be absent a couple days!

@kristinegift - hope the hip flexor is okay! Take it easy!
    @9voice9 - enjoy Japan!!!
@RunsOnEspresso - I can't imagine running with icy feet!!! Good job!
    @HonuNui - Cute picture/poem!
@MobyCarp - lol on your OCD circle to hit 13. I know my neighbors must look out and see me run a little past my house, then back and think, what is that mad lady doing! Glad you are having a great Christmas! Enjoy!

Have one last present to get, so going to brave town centre later - I'll destress by going to the gym so may hop on the treadmill whilst I'm there to make it up to a decent distance for the day

Loved the gym - literally had it to myself so was fab. I did another 5k fartlek on the treadmill tonight - set the incline to random and did 1min walk (4mph)/5 min run (6.2mph) intervals by time. Will update ticker etc on Boxing day.

Hope you all have a wonderful day tomorrow. Merry Christmas everyone, Dz,x
