Yesterday I finally did some strength training again. Originally, I wanted to take 2 weeks of after the marathon - which was end of October, so somehow that turned into six weeks! If I'm honest, I know how that happened. I just really hate doing it. And I suck at it, so I hate it even more, so I don't do it nearly as often as I should, so I don't get any better, so I dread the next time I have to do it even more, ... I almost decided to put it of until next year and make it my New Year's resolutions, but I couldn't come up with a convincing reason why it would be any better starting over in 2017 instead of now.

Running is just so much more fun. Even today, when I couldn't see my own feet in the dense fog. I could have run like that forever. I didn't have much time, because I was going to meet some colleagues for pizza and beer later, but I was really tempted to run a bit longer and only show up at the restaurant in time for desert. Until some idiot car driver scared me by cutting a corner across the sidewalk right in front of me - I think he didn't see the turn until the last moment. Seriously?! If you don't have fog lights and can't see where you are going, maybe you should slow down? Just a minute after that the battery of one of my blinking LED clip lights died, and I decided that the remaining one was probably not enough to deal with fog and idiot drivers, so I turned back home.

@MNLittleFinn Don't worry about your planning for the rest of 2017 after the marathon now! I can understand if you want a bit of structure - I followed the Hal Higdon Intermediat 2 plan for my marathon, so for me the natural follow-up was his "Post marathon intermediate" plan, which is five weeks long and finishes with a 5k/10k race. It helped me to have a rough guideline (without it, I probably would have started doing too much too soon instead of recovering). But after this, I'm currently just enjoying some running without any plans or goals. Maybe I'll look for a spring race when I have more free time over Christmas to plan these things. But after sticking to a detailed plan for four month, it's also nice to just run for fun for a bit :)

@kristinegift Your new car sounds great! I also bought a young (2012) car a few weeks ago. Still haven't gotten used to all the fancyness - it doesn't have a back-up camera, but I can make the mirrors fold in by pressing a button, like magic  The only drawback is that after the sale of my old car, I don't know anymore where I can play my music tapes ^^

@bmelb1 If you don't need the orginal brand buff, you can also find offers on amazon for multiple ones rather cheap. I just ordered those last week - can't say much about the quality yet, but at first glance they seem okay; and now I can finally wear one around my neck and one on the head; and stash one or two at work and in the car.

@shanaber 2000km for the year are an awesome number, great job!

@kristinegift congrats on the new car, you might have mentioned it, but what did you buy. I need to buy a car, now that Skip has taken over my truck, but I have no idea what I want.

@_nikkiwolf_ yeah, I'm pretty much thinking now that I'll just see how I feel afterward. other than getting my massage on M+2, I think I'm not going to think about it much. I've gotten too hooked on looking to the future this year, and I think it hurt my performance in my races, so plan for 2017 as I'm thinking now, is to get that marathon done, then reevaluate. I'll have a month to get back into running before I'd need to start training for a fall race anyway.

    Thanks for the thoughts/advice!

A few more inches of snow during the day today and it was still coming down when I went out for my run this afternoon. The roads were cleared (except my apartment complex, of course), so I mainly stuck to running in the street. I decided to switch up my music selection to Christmas music and I was feeling so festive that my 4 mile run turned into a bit of a speed workout with a time of 36:24 (9:06 pace).

I am hoping this isn't me at the end of the holiday season after all the Christmas cookies I've been eating!

@greenolivetree I somehow missed your knee/shin injuries! So sorry that you couldn't continue the streak. Hope you are recovering okay and the new year can provide a fresh new start!

@kristinegift Congrats on the new car!

@Calvin2008Brian Wow, kudos to you for running 10 miles worth of laps! To me, that seems only slightly less torturous than running that distance on the treadmill.

@Elise4270 Love the violin pic with the cat! I can imagine my cats would react similarly

@MobyCarp Way to go on a great race and not setting back your recovery! I know getting to and from Bend is a pain but it's so beautiful. Hope you get the opportunity to go!

@Stoshew71 Congratulations again on a fantastic time for your marathon. Sorry the stars didn't align for you to BQ but hopefully the Kentucky Derby Marathon will be your race.

@ariceroni Is that the Lakefront Trail in Chicago? Every time I'm there and I drive past it, I want to run on it but it never seems to work out. I've run several races in the city, but of course those are on the streets since there's so many people. Looks pretty!

Got in 4.3 miles this evening. It was cut short by an anxiety attack. That has never happened to me while running before. My breathing got all out of whack and gave me a side stitch to boot.

Running usually alleviates anxiety for me. I do not like that I am able to get an attack while running. I need to read that article I saw about how to meditate while running.

    12/10 – 5.01 USATF Club Nationals Masters 8K
    12/11 – 2.57 easy
    12/12 – 10.15 easy
    12/13 – 6.21 hills

December total to date – 69.76

Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Finish transition to healthy running. Use Club Nationals as a learning experience on managing air travel to a race. Build a base toward Boston training. Avoid re-injury

Today's notes – No structured club workout today, as it's a week off after Club Nationals. So I went to do the informal Cobb's Hill run out of Fleet Feet. 34º F (1º C) and winter running conditions. I wore my Peregrines because I expected the streets and sidewalks near Cobb's Hill wouldn't be cleared well. It turned out the streets were fine, but since I was wearing trail shoes anyway I decided to take an alternate route to the hill along the trail past the tennis courts. That went okay, because the snow wasn't deep. Then I took the gravel trail up the hill, which was packed snow and ice. That was interesting. After that, I stuck to cleared roads.

I could feel that the hill running was beating on the Achilles, but I managed to keep it to a livable level. It seems I'm going to have to pay more attention to elevation change for a while. I like hills, and if I had to add them back in gradually I'll do that. It beats sitting on the couch. The hills may also explain why the Achilles complained after the cross country race Saturday; it was up and down a hill three times.

In other news, today I ordered my first pair of cross country spikes. Because it's past the cross country marketing season, I ordered them online without being able to try them on. Picked the model by looking for what Saucony makes that was available in my size. Then after my card was charged, I figured out how to screen by size and found the model Coach wore was available in my size. Oh, well. I'll see if the ones I ordered work well, and look for something better if they don't.

Did some looking at air travel to Portland for running Bend. It's inconvenient in time required, but I have the money . . . except that runs the travel budget down far enough that I worry about funding the trip to Boston. I'll have to do some more looking at the financial situation to see if I can make both those trips work. If I can't, Boston is more important.

@skippygirlsmom I'm getting a pre-owned certified 2013 Honda Civic. I drive a 1997 Civic now and they're great cars. Reliable and last decades if you want em to! Plus a 17 year newer car has lots of perks: back-up camera, steering wheel controls for music, built in USB to charge/play from your phone... all the ammenities a girl could want (except butt warmers... oh well)!

Sounds great @kristinegift good luck with it! I'm looking for something a couple years old too, but I think I'm having a mid life crisis and I'm looking at sports cars ha ha!!! Skip can drive the momma SUV  I wanted to buy her a car and she likes the SUV she likes being able to sit up higher. She tried to drive my boyfriend's Focus and she can't see over the steering wheel.

@skippygirlsmom Give her the old and buy yourself new (or rather new-to-you)! It's funny that she wants to be up higher. I'm pretty short (5'3" and I like being down lower because it feels more natural to how I view the world anyway ;)

@_nikkiwolf_ Haha I was genuinely surprised my new car came with a CD player at all! The sales guy made sure I knew how to hook up the blue tooth before I even got off the lot :D As for your tapes though... I think you may be S-O-L!

My goal is 50 miles this month. My job is crying for us to pick up overtime.

12/2....4.73 miles on the treadmill, rolling hills, pace at 13:20, average heart rate at 82% max.
    12/4....2.85 miles on the treadmill.
12/7....3.52 miles on the treadmill, max heart rate at 88%, pace at 13:02.
12/9.....3.95 miles on the treadmill, max heart rate at 80%. pace at 12:45
12/13....4.42 miles on the treadmill, max heart rate at 88%, pace at 11:19

I had the flu over the weekend. Felt better today...still with some stomach issues but better than yesterday. Going to stay away from dairy for a while to see if it helps.Initially thought the body aches were due to Zercher squats.

If up to it, May try running outside.

    Total...19.49 miles
    Goal....50 miles.

@RespectTheKitty - sorry about anxiety attack while running. Sounds scary. There is a Mother Teresa quote (I guess she is now Saint Teresa) "It is impossible to walk rapidly and be unhappy" which I took to mean as run. Although we know we've all had bad runs and are unhappy about it! Anyway, I read that one many years ago and took it to heart if I was feeling bad and told my kids to do the same. Let's hope your attack was a one-time weird thing where you just forgot you were running.

@osubuckey906 - love the cartoon! At the school where I teach I usually try to just stay out of teacher's lounge and avoid the tons of cookies that are brought in close to Christmas. The last couple years with the Holiday Streak and all the other exercise I keep indulging and having way too many myself!

@greenolivetree - awesome medal! yay chili! I wouldn't eat chili prior to running though.

Was planning on running 1 mile at the gym on treadmill after work, however, the weather is so perfect in the mornings decided to do a couple miles for the streak instead.

    12/1 - 3.2 miles
    12/2 - 1.5 miles
    12/3 - 45 miles biking + 1 mile run
    12/4 - 27 miles biking + 1 mile run
    12/5 - 4 miles
    12/6 - 4 miles
12/7 - 1 mile on treadmill for streak (after strength training)
    12/8 - 4.47 miles
12/9 - 1 mile on treadmill for streak (after strength training)
12/10 - 77 miles bike and 1 mile run for streak!
12/11 - 27 miles biking and 1 mile run for streak
    12/12 - 4 miles
    12/13 - 5 miles
    12/14 - 2.1 miles - day 21 streak + strength training

    Upcoming races
    2/5/17 - Daytona Beach HM
2/26/17 - Disney Princess HM Orlando
