Managed to hit my 50 mile goal this month but I'm back on the injured reserve. Luckily not for a running injury but I managed to keep the Christmas injury tradition alive by slicking my left hand open. I'm out for a week to heal and will assess then for January. Hopefully this will only be a minor set back.

@shanaber yeah on running jewerly! We have a tiger tail too, I like it much better than the foam roller. We throw it in our bag and take it to meets, it's always being handed around with the kids.

@shanaber We'll find out test results this afternoon and if we're going home to keep doing what we're doing or stay for surgery. Neither option really sounds appealing :/

@Azercord yikes! Take care of that wound.

10 min warmup on the bike this morning then 36 min on the treadmill. I ran a steady 5mph today and threw in several hills, except at the end I did a fast little push working from 6-6.8mph. I slowed to a walk for water breaks. Garmin said 3.5 miles, treadmill said 2.8 miles - I rolled garmin back to 3.1 miles to play it safe.

I don't have a tiger tail but I got this bumpy stick a year ago. So glad I traveled with it! Lifesaver.owv37zpy1kll.jpg

    Almost at this month's goal!
Decided I'm doing the Cowtown Marathon (Fort Worth) in February. I had debated on doing something closer or that one because I did their half last year, but my aunt signed up and wanted me to join her. I enjoyed it for the most part but remembered how much cursing I did during the steep hills...

I am still something like 12 miles from goal and I need to get out to finish that up. I have Fri. off from work and don't work Sat. So even if I don't find time any day from today through Thurs. (I probably won't), I might be able to make my goal anyway. I have plans Fri., but should be done early enough to get a run done in the afternoon as long as nothing screws up those plans.

Let's message each other as we get closer to the event. An MFP meetup would be fun.

Thanks for the warning on the hills too. I've been procrastinating adding in hill work, but I'm going to start adding some in starting this weekend so I don't die in the marathon. Running uphill is definitely my weakness.

I'm thinking of a good running goal for next year. If I run 100 miles per month, that's 1200 miles for the year. But I know there will be some months where I can't hit 100, so maybe I'll try for 1000 miles in 2017? Does that sound like a good goal? What are other people's 2017 goals?

    Nominal mileage goal: 100 miles
Real goal, get into the swing of Marathon training, and get used to doing 3 days a week of some strength/core while running 35+ MPW

Today's notes: This week is a hot mess, I missed yesterday's 3 mile run, and today was an elliptical day, but since I was still down with family in the morning, I went for a 6 mile run instead. Hoping to get back in the groove of things with an 8 miler tomorrow.

Run this morning was good, but I was VERY grateful that my mom has to pairs of YakTrax, so I could borrow one. The roads were ICY!!! good all around run, and I'm glad I got it in before making the long drive home!

Side note, Looking at next week's schedule, I'm hoping it's a sign that my aunt finally realized that I can put on more miles than she thinks. Next week looks to be 40 miles with a 13 mile long run! So hoping that's the start of a trend!

December goal reached! Decided to treadmill it today, even though it wasn't terrible out. I was not in the mood to be cold again after last night's cold and rainy run. Action at the Y is starting to pick up - all of the best treadmills were full.

Last December, I was just 3 months into this running thing and I had 45.7 miles for the month. So I'm going to use these last few days of December to revise my goal to 91.4 miles - which will be double last year's total.

NYC weather is perfect today. Ran 5.57 this morning and loved it. Met a friend for a late lunch and right afterwards my husband felt really sick. So now I'm sort of trapped waiting to see if he will get better or what. A lot of people at home in Florida were sick before we left but this seems like it could be food poisoning. Waiting to see...

A bit of an impromptu speed/tempo run today. I set out to run 4 miles at a moderate/easy pace again per the injured shin, but had a hard time holding my pace back the first two miles and wasn't feeling any pain. After that, I decided to try for some negative splits the second half as well with the intention of ditching the faster pace if I felt any pain at all. Mile splits were 9:14, 9:12, 9:09, and 8:53 (total time was 36:28, overall pace of 9:07). It felt really great good to get in a faster run without pain. I remembered I took some tylenol earlier for a headache and that must have helped with the shin too. Weather was also perfect...34F, sunny, and no ice to be found!

With 2016 ending in just 4 days, it's time to start thinking about 2017. What will the new year hold for you?

For me it will be running my first 26.2 on my 10th wedding anniversary. Second half of the year is a big blank for now, the marathon, and recovery from it, will be a major factor in me deciding the rest of the year.

@katharmonic that's an awesome goal to have! You've made huge gains over the last year!

    Thank you :)

2017 is going to be exciting for you. I'll be looking forward to hearing about your training.

I was thinking about this some today, and I don't yet have a "big" goal for the year. I'm unsure about doing another half, but feel like I'm coming around to it more than I was. Mainly I want to work on consistency and continuing to slowly improve my pace. I may just focus on that and running some shorter races. We'll see when early spring rolls around.

That's a good goal to have, lot of thr time "simple" but solid goals are the best.

only reason I have the marathon is, well, when my wife gives me the go ahead for something that big I have to go for it, and I do better staying on task with a goal, and a marathon is a BIG goal.

Sounds like 2017 will be a great year for you!

My major goal, as of now, is to run a spring marathon. I'd also like to run at least one half marathon before the marathon and, if I'm able to continue running my long runs at the pace I've been running on those longer runs, I should PR a race or two. Ideally, my spring marathon will be Flying Pig. I'm also interested in a small local half marathon MLK weekend here in a few weeks. However, all those goals will only be possible if I'm healthy/uninjured. Last week when I had my meltdown about my shin, I had pretty much written off being able to run in January and was highly doubting a spring marathon. Since then, things have turned around a little but I know the shin still needs to be addressed. I have an appointment with a new doc on 1/6 (cancelled the other one) and I'm hoping they will help me construct a plan to help the shin pain get better that doesn't include stopping running for an extended period of time. The second half of the year will depend on the first half, but I'm hoping it will be more of the same.

    12/24 – 13.00 paced run
    12/25 – 7.31 easy
    12/26 – 6.84 easy
    12/27 – 5.28 warmup + speed work

December total to date – 148.90

Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Finish transition to healthy running. Use Club Nationals as a learning experience on managing air travel to a race. Build a base toward Boston training. Avoid re-injury

Today's notes – Today was the first indoor speed work session of the winter. 2 mile warmup, then the assignment was 4 x 800m at T pace, with 200m recovery, plus 6 x 60m strides, jog between. I set a slow T target, 51 seconds per 200m lap, or 3:24 for 800m. Actual results on the 800s were 3:18, 3:19 and got confused so continued to 4:11 for 1000m, 3:21, and 3:22. Most of the inaccuracy was in running the first 200m of each 800 faster than target pace.

Garmin reports a total of 5.28 miles, which is what I'm using for distance tracking. I ran to 2.01 miles on Garmin for the warmup, which understated the track distance; but Garmin overstated the track distance for the speed work by about the same amount, so it's good enough. Extreme accuracy is not necessary here, and I'm off by a minor fraction of a mile.

I omitted the 2 mile cool down because the last 2 runs were a bit longer than planned, and I'd like to run 6 miles with a group tomorrow instead of 5 on my own. Just another day in the first week of marathon training, which is labeled Week 16 by my plan.

I notice that if I'd run a 2 mile cool down, I'd have hit my nominal monthly goal today. That's okay, I'll hit it tomorrow. I've also seen a lot of chatter about annual goals and running the year. I didn't set an annual goal at the beginning of 2016, but I thought in the back of my mind that I'd blow past the year in miles. That didn't happen. 2016 miles to date, 1920.83. I guess I needed to stay healthy to run the year in miles, instead of my actual result of having run 16 miles in October.

So, 2017 goals? No numerical goal. The major goal is to stay healthy. If I can do that, the numbers will be there. And to get there, I need to run Boston and finish in good shape. Memo to self: Running the marathon fast is not the point.

@mobycarp your memo to yourself was a great reminder to me that I need to do that same thing... it is something I'm already trying to pound into my own, stupid, head. I figure if I start telling myself now that I'm not going to run 26.2 fast, I might actually believe it enough to pace myself better in 6 months.

We had freezing rain today so I ran on the treadmill since the roads were too slippery. For some reason my ticker isn't displaying properly so I didn't include it.

My running goals for 2017 are to work up to running about 6 days a week and try running a 10km race in May. I just finished a 5km learn to run program at the beginning of December so now I'm trying to build up my endurance and learn how to train for a longer distance without getting injured.

Date Km Today - Km for Dec.
    12/1 6.17 - 6.17
    12/4 5.77 - 11.94
    12/6 5.34 - 17.28

Real goal, get into the swing of Marathon training, and get used to doing 3 days a week of some strength/core while running 35+ MPW

Today's notes: Back in the training saddle again, after a long, lovely weekend with family. Put in 8 miles before getting the rest of the family up this morning. Run felt pretty good. HR ended up being a little higher than I'd like, but with an inch of fresh snow on the ground, covering ice, it made for some sliding in some spots. All i all though, good run, and happy I have the rest of the day to "rest" playing with my precocious 2 year old.

12/25 to 12/28 - Nasty upper respiratory virus = no running and minimal activity. Back to work today, but still sick. Yuck.
