I love to ride and want to take on more distance rides this year. I was a spin instructor but recently gave that up. Now I am looking for something to fill the void. I am currently riding on an indoor spin bike and use the Peloton app. It provides a virtual cycle class. It is excellent.

What do you do with this? Is this a goal setting challenge?

You can use this forum for whatever you desire. Goals. Logging distance, and time. Asking questions. Posting up minutes. It's really up to the individual. There are no rules or guidelines. Nor is there any sort of a "challenge" required.

    Happy new year everyone!

I'll aim for at least 150km this month. If it doesn't snow too much and I find better gloves... I got a pair sold as "winter cycling gloves" for Christmas. But when I tried them on my way to work on Thursday, my hands were frozen after 2km, the cold started to really hurt after 4km, and when I arrived at work after 6km I nearly didn't manage to get my access card out of my jacket pocket to swipe it. The way home in the evening was every bit as painful...

    04/01/2017 - 3.2km new chain test ride
    05/01/2017 - 12.5km commute
    07/01/2017 - 3.2km supermarket and back

18.9 km (of 150km Jan goal) done

    Hello Everyone,

At the end of week one I have the following. I'm riding indoors with my bike on a trainer. Way tooo cold outside. I usually do a quick 15-20 minute walk/warm up on the treadmill before the cycling.

    January 1st 12.7 miles/57:49 min
    January 2nd 9.7 miles/41.47 min
January 3rd - walked on the treadmill; my body has to get used to the saddle again - no biking today
    January 5th - 9.09 miles/41 min
    January 7th - 9.07 miles/44 min

    January Total Miles: 40.56
    January Total Duration: 184.36

Trying to stick to my Trainer Road plan. I have a hard time staying focused on indoor rides longer than an hour. How does everyone here avoid boredom?

    Jan 2: 9.3 mi, 45min. Thunderbolt - TrainerRoad

I have the bike set-up on a trainer in the basement in view of a TV. I also have an book holder attached to the bike, and have cycling training videos that I use either playing them on my IPad (that is set on the book holder), or DVDs I play. Lately I've rotating through some cycling training videos on the IPad and while on the bike I watch shows that I've DVRd. This typically helps me through the time.

Hi all, well not done this before but certainly up for challenging myself.
Going to go at the starting level of 200 miles. I cycle outdoors and in but my stationary has mileage so will be logging that.
    January 4th 10 miles stationary
    January 5th 9 miles
    January 6th 4 miles
    January 7th 10 miles stationary

    33 miles so far.

Welcome to all of the newcomers. Between weather, preparing for holiday company, and the holidays, I got no rides logged in December and I am itching to get back on the bike. @SteveCro challenged me to ride in the cold last year and I see that he is at it again. I don't know if I can man up and ride in the tempatures that he is, but I want to get back outside. Not going to commit to a mileage goal, I'll just take what I can get.

    Hi,
I'm just beginning to get back in to cycling, at the moment I'm doing this on a static bike at home, this is due to hubby being away until April, and well, with 2 kids can't get out much during the evenings.
I am hoping to build up, at the moment doing around 35-40 mins an evening, moving up and back down the levels (5mins on each). I would like to build up to around an hr to an hr and a half.

Starting to plan out the year ahead....
Will do my usual New Forest (100 miler in May) and Ditching Devil (128 miles in June) Audax events but if the Spring weather is kind and I get plenty of time outdoors I may change up the New Forest ride to the longer route that adds a loop of the Isle of Wight (124 miles).

There's a couple of unsupported long rides I want to do this year, one near Winchester and the other around the Trough of Bowland. Very tempted by a London - Paris ride for my first taste of foreign cycling.

Right now I've a bit of Christmas weight to lose and hitting the weights hard and training indoors on a Wattbike Pro in the gym and with my hybrid on a turbo trainer in the garage. Really looking forward to getting outside when weather improves.

76 miles so far this month, mostly indoors.

I'm in this month. I missed being in it last month. I will set my goal at 200 miles combination of indoors and outdoors. Depends on the weather and snow for outside.

    1/4 - 8.27 miles - outside 18*F with 18 mph winds weather bug says feels like 3*F
    1/5 - 8.0 miles - outside 12* F
    1/6 - 7.91 miles - outside 8*F
    1/7 - 10.39 miles - outside 12*F

    YTD - 34.56 miles

For those of you riding indoor trainers... Does anyone have a shelf in front of their bike for Ipad or such? I have seen one from Wahoo but its pricey so looking for suggestions or solutions you have found. I currently have my Ipad on a shelf beside me

Hi everyone I'm new to Myfitnesspal and I'm slowly figuring it out. I cycle quite a lot, road bike mainly, but with some mountain biking. At home I have a Wattbike and can be found on Zwift a few evenings a week under my name "Rob Askew", would be great to get a ride organised if there are a few of us. Just started training again on the 1st Jan and have about 20KG's to shift before the summer.

I've entered the Stelvio Santini (http://www.granfondostelviosantini.com/) in June so really need to ramp up my training.

Its great to see so many fellow cyclist on this site I'll try and update my stats weekly. Last week I managed 100km in the week on 4 indoor sessions.

    Target for January is 500km.

Have fun and take care out there.

My laptop sits on top of my wine fridge in my garage so that's no help!
Tri bars on the Wattbike in my gym double up as a handy phone/laptop/iPad shelf though.

@Askwerj - A zwift ride would be great. I ride very early...4:30 - 5:00 am (Eastern Time) Also Thanks for suggestion on tablet holder.

@sijomial - Sounds perfect....unless it prevents you from getting to the wine

@dtcjem That could pose a problem as I'm GMT and ride in the evening. I think Eastern is around 5 hours behind. Weekend ride could be the best option?

Finally got some miles on the board for this month, and going to set my target for the month to 250 miles, and aim for 4000 for the year (last year was just short of 2750, but I didn't start riding until May)

    Mon 09 - 23.8 miles

    MTD 23.8 / 250, YTD 23.8 / 4000

(Also discovered that the mysterious irritation on my throat on the way home was caused by having my compression shirt on back to front! Hopefully that's the first and last time for that this year)

Nice work on the metric century. How long did it take you?

Thanks! :) We're doing a Petite Year Round Randonneur challenge ... 100 km in each month of the year, starting in November 2016 (the Audax calendar year starts in November for reasons lost in the mysteries of time). So this was our third metric in this series. :)

    It took:
    Elapsed Time: 5:35
    Moving Time: 5:14

Yeah ... we're not fast.

I saw that one on the Wahoo site - definitely pricey. I use a "Travel Trac Book Caddy", and have done so for the past two years. I'm able to have my phone and an iPad on the caddy. If you do an internet search it will pop up for you. This has worked very well for me, but I am looking for a new one too because of different devices I have added to my handlebar. I did a search on amazon for iPad holders and found one not specifically for a bike but for an Ipad. If you use the search terms "floor tablet stand" you'll see several options.

Since I got my 800 minutes in December, I think I will see if I can start the year with 900 minutes on my trainer. If I can find my BT speed/cadence sensor, I may put a distance measure in there, but it seems to be hiding from me.

January 1st 0 minutes. I am just too tired after not getting to sleep until 4:30AM and then waking up at 9AM.
    January 2nd 40 minutes - Total 40 minutes 860 to go.
    January 3rd 30 minutes - Total 70 minutes 830 to go.
    January 6th 18 minutes - Total 88 minutes 812 to go.
    January 9th 45 minutes - Total 133 minutes 767 to go.

@dtcjem From looking at the wahoo shelf, you want something that's in front of your bike instead of fixed to the handle bar, right? How about a music stand? For 10-20$ you should be able to find one that you can adjust in height, fold up for storage, ... No reason you couldn't put an ipad on it instead of music sheets.

    --

I bought new gloves on the weekend (according to the sales guy the warmest bike gloves they had in the shop), and on yesterdays commute, my hands only got really cold, but not completely numb and stiff. I guess that's as good as it will get.
No chance to use them today, when I woke up this morning there were 10cm of fresh snow on the ground with more coming down. A good day to drive the car to work and do some grocery shopping on the way home...

I'm actually considering getting an indoor trainer, to be independent from the weather. I saw some rollers online that aren't too expensive. I just have to figure out if I would actually use them or if they would just end up collecting dust after the first excitement has worn off.
I have a bike computer that measures using a little magnet on a spoke of the front wheel. Would that also work on rollers, or would I have to buy something else to track speed and distance?
