Fun fact...

Not one person has ever lost weight because they bought a fit bit, expensive workout clothes or trendy exercise equipment. If you need to lose weight, the only thing that works is to eat less and move more. The toys and expensive outfits..unnecessary. I'm sure this may be obvious to most..but it seems a reminder is in order. Weight loss does t have to cost you any money. Don't be a sheep. The diet industry is invested in convincing you that their crap is necessary in order for you to succeed. Nope. Move and eat less. That is all you need.

I fully agree with you although the gadgets likely do assist some people, the fitbits and shealths of the world give people little ribbons and tokens as rewards, makes them feel good and in some cases probably motivates some to continue to keep up their streaks etc. Like video game mentality, just wanna reach the next level
Is it needed well no you are correct, but its really quite harmless as people like targets and tracking... thats why half the people are on this site to track calories but also to feel pride at watching the progress bar inch closer to their targets.
On that same regard I would argue we don't need a scale to lose weigh either or track progress as the way your clothes fit is often a much more accurate way to gauge your progress.
But the original post is 100% accurate for you and for me but that being said all types of people rely on other ways to motivate... whatever works for the individual is good by me.
Best of luck all!15 -
Your wrong. The work out clothes are deff nessasary If i gotta go to the gym least ill look good while im there:) as for fitbit it helps track calories from movement and helps accuracy. I regret nothing.14

The clothes are necessary, I mean if I showed up to the gym with out them I'd probably get some funny looks and possibly arrested for public indecency
I agree with the others about the fitbit, not only for the rewards and goals but it gives you really great summaries and charts to show your progress overtime. My runs got faster, this week I didn't lose why? What did I do differently from last week? You can have step competitions with your friends etc. I know MFP has some of this, but the fitbit has everything in one place. Needed no, but certainly helps and makes it more fun.8 -
They don't cause weight loss but there are plenty of handy tools out there. My Fitbit is exactly like my pen and paper I use to track my weight training. Is it essential? No. Does it improve efficiency? Yes.
I don't need a car to get me to the store either but it sure is a useful tool. I'll keep the tools I find useful.9 -
Gym? A gym isn't needed either. I've never set foot in a gym in my life. It's just another trendy thing.7

This is false.

I lost weight because I bought a Fitbit.
I didn't realise before then that I wasn't even hitting the "sedentary" step count, and should have been deducting calories from my daily goal. Which in turn got me to move more.11 -

You're right. Those are two things.6 -

And aren't both necessary.0 -
unfortunately the OP is incorrect.
Losing weight does cost money. Do you need "special" gear...yes you do.
If you go for a walk without the proper shoes it hurts (been there done that)
If you go for a run in jeans yah...okay
You need proper shoes and clothing for the activity....that does cost money.
The "healthy" food is more expensive than "easy foods" so chances are your grocery bill will go up.
Not trying to discourage just throwing a dose of reality in here...
I have a fitness tracker...it helps but not necessary
I do not go to a gym
I do however have 3 pairs of runners (walking/running), I have spent funds on weights and proper clothing (keeps the girls in check when running) among other items of clothing that are required for what I do.
I am not a sheep but get to enjoy what I am doing I have to have the proper gear to do it...it's a must have not a nice to have thing....and if you are serious you get that too...

FALSE! These items can go a very long way in assisting a person with their efforts. The act of making a purchase or using an app does not itself cause weight loss, but the tool in use certainly can help. The reasons why many people have greater success with these things than without are many and varied between individuals. Different strokes for different folks. Do what works for you and let everyone else do what works for them. I judge no one for what gadget they purchase to help them along the way. I applaud anyone who does what ever they need to do to get where they need to be.5

I would burn a lot less energy in the winter if I hadn't invested in some decent winter running clothes and that would certainly impact my weight loss.
I understand what you're saying, but if HRMs, nice workout clothes, and phones that easily allow us to access calorie database information help people stay motivated and meet their goals, they can indeed play a role in weight loss.
They aren't required, but neither are a lot of the other things people choose to buy with money. If I have to choose between a nice piece of running gear or a lipstick, I'll probably choose the running gear. Why not?2 -
Different things help different people. To lose weight you do need a calorie deficit and you do not have to spend a lot of money on expensive gadgets. But I like my gadgets. I like to be able to track my steps and calories burned. I'm older and I remember trying to count calories in the old days before cell phone apps. It was too difficult and tedious for me and having mfp on my phone makes it a snap. I could eat less before, but I didn't. And as far as workout clothes. I like to wear workout clothes. It makes me feel more serious about my exercise than just wearing a baggy old shirt. Plus I do yoga and I can't wear baggy shirts for that. It does help to feel comfortable when working out and feel like you look good. If you are working out in the heat, even if it is just walking then moisture wicking is important and so are proper shoes. So while I agree that you don't have to spend a lot of money to lose weight, I don't think there is anything wrong with people wanting the gadgets and the workout clothes. I would argue that some people have lost weight because of those things because if that is what helps them stick to their calorie deficit then that is what they need to do.2

If the subject is weight loss and not fitness, none of that is required. Weight loss can be done without spending extra money. That is the only true part of the OP.
But just because something isn't required doesn't mean it's bad. It's like suggesting that anyone that owns more than one pair of pants is a sheep at the mercy of the fashion industry.3 -
You do not have to spend money to lose weight. You just have to take in fewer claories, burn more calories or both. Money does not have to be an obstacle to weight loss.
You don't have to buy particular foods/shakes/teas.
You can choose to use free tools like MFP or workout videos on you tube.
You can walk without a fitness tracker.
You can wear clothes you already own. You can exercise at home barefoot in your pj's if you choose.
You might find it helpful to have appropriate shoes, specific exercise clothing (like a sports bra), a food scale, a pedometer or fitness tracker, a gym membership or home exercise equipment but not necessary. Spend money if you want but if you can't don't feel you can't lose weight.
My purchases over the last 2 years were:
shoes
sports bras
$12 pedometer
5 lb weights
I have cut about $50-60 off my food spending each week by not eating out much, eating more beans or lentil dishes and eating less beef.0 -
This may be true BUT... to eat healthy you need to spend more money. No one ever lost weight eating spagetti!0

It's not the foods you eat that make you gain or lose weight, it's the size if the portions you're eating. There's nothing wrong with eating spaghetti so long as you can make it fit into your daily calorie goal.

Yes and no. But either way, if I want to spend my money on tools to help me get to goal, what should that matter to anyone else?5
-
Only thing I think you SHOULD buy is a food scale.
But I'm on my second watch, have a chest strap, weights, treadmill, 2 pairs of new shoes, bluetooth headphones, and MFP and they have all been part of helping me to lose weight.
I work out at home so the clothing (aside from good shoes) is optional.2 -
I used that in more of a form of like.. cheap food.. breads, pasta(mac and cheese) more less to say you need to spend more money on healthy food then you do on stuff like that:) i eat spagetti aswell just not everyday:p i just used tnat as an example because a pack of pasta is like 5 bucks and sauce is like a dollar lol.. i think some of you took me a little to literally lol..0 -

Lots of people, including myself, lost weight eating spaghetti. My grocery bill actually went down when I lost weight. I was still eating the foods I ate before, I was just eating less of them.
This is actually cheaper.2 -

My overall food bill went down from eating out less for lunch, but what I spend at the grocery store went up. Not a lot though and nowhere near as much as my lunch bill went down.1 -

You can eat healthy on a budget. Dried beans, eggs, pasta, rice, cheap cuts of meat/fish, frozen or canned vegetables,..1 -
