What nobody tells you about losing weight

How strange it is to be around people who didn't know you when you were overweight. I started a new job after losing 90 pounds. When I went out for a department lunch several commented on how amazing it was that someone so "tiny" could eat so much food (it was a SALAD people!) and how nice it must be to have a "fast metabolism". I didn't know what to say.
I know that feeling- so strange- it suddenly felt like I had a secret. That what they saw was not the whole story

That if you overeat just a tiny bit you think you gained 60 pounds and are now a blimp again and need to go through all the hard work to get it off when in reality you didn't even gain a pound.
Or dealing with the worry of returning to fat land. I love having that worry now. Keeps my *kitten* on the straight and narrow. Kinda like a buddy who is always keeping me on track.31 -
that when you have upped your strength training even slightly that you need to be careful opening doors. I swear work are going to start charging me for re-plastering behind the doors. Used to have to put some real umph into some of the fire safety doors and now they fly open with the same effort and slam into the wall...oops35
-
That I can't sleep on my stomach anymore. The lack of a belly means no support for my lower back, when means back pain when I lay prone. Wakes me up every so often now....
Asleep me hasnt worked that out yet, he is an idiot, and thanks to him I wake up regularly on my front with my lower back killing me

Hihi not quite there yet, but I used to complain about the fire doors being too hard to open and that it was a bit of a safety hazard... (nearly all the other women in the company complain too... so it must be the doors... right?)
I realized after reading your post that they open like a charm now and they haven't changed the doors or done any amount of maintenance on them...18 -
- Just a few weeks in (weight loss and exercising again..) I started standing up straighter.
- I realised that when I stood up straighter, even my face looked better?
- Another month or two and I started to lose the visible weight around my face. And suddenly I started to actually... like what I saw in the mirror? After years of hating mirrors. All of a sudden I saw myself and I thought.. hey, she looks alright!
- Then I finally gave up on tying my belt tighter and tighter and bought new jeans and saw how my bum was lookin' in my new jeans and oh my, hello!
- ...and that's around when The Thing happened. I chucked out all the clothes that didn't fit anymore. Kept the ones that are still too small 'cause I know I'll be able to wear them in another couple months. And then I started to pay attention to what I wore. Instead of just throwing on something that was clean, I'll take a few minutes and pick out an outfit that I look good in. I started wearing makeup sometimes, and then I got my hair done with new style and colour. I'm still holding off on getting a whole new wardrobe 'cause I've still got 15lbs to go. But I'm saving up for doing just that in March/April, and it's gonna be awesome.
- ...and I stick up for myself now. Like, losing weight and getting fit is hard work, right? I've gotta plan out my meals, I've gotta stick to my gym routine and actually push as hard as I can when I'm working out. And hey- it's hard, but I'm doing it. Which means I'm someone who sets goals and sticks to 'em and who doesn't let myself get discouraged when I mess up for a day or a week, and who just gets right on there and keeps on going. I started this process thinking that it'd be good to lose a few pounds. I never, ever realised how it'd completely change how I look at myself. I want to take on a big, scary task that'll take ages? Sure! Just break it down, set it into my routine and come back to me in six months. Someone treats me badly? Pah, I've no time to deal with that shiz. It's kind of amazing?

Interesting thing, "actual" handicapped people assume that I use the handicapped stall to accomodate my size when in actuality I need the extra height due to my knees. Respect goes both ways, it's rough, if you walk into the stall that doesn't mean you don't struggle.
also, they may have an 'invisible' handicap- like claustrophobia, or a colonoscopy bag.16 -
I have been watching this board since I re-started my program in June of last year. I love to see the posts and they have definitely inspired me - thank you all!
Finally, I can post my own (I'm 47 pounds down with another 28 to go).- My butt hurts LOL! My tushy has no cushion. It's like I had been carrying around a stadium cushion that no longer exists.
- My glasses keep falling down my nose. I know I should go in and have them adjust, but that would mean an extra trip in my car, where my tushy will hurt from lack of cushion
- There are so many more choices of clothing now that I'm smaller - I had thought that maybe this was perception, when I was shopping plus sizes, but when I went over to the "other side" of the store, I was overwhelmed with the choices I had. Yes. I cried the first time.
- People keep calling me "Skinny Minnie". It's very odd how many people say this.
- People at work don't recognize me from the end of the hall. I wave (like I used to) and instead of waving back, they give me an odd look... then they get closer and LAUGH! I am told at least twice a week, "I didn't recognize you!" (this one is my favorite)
I'm good with all of the above... so far, there is nothing I dislike about being smaller. I am comfortable in airplane seats now (aside from lack of cushion), I can walk up a flight of stairs without wheezing, and this may be TMI but sex is WAY more fun.24 -
That when you are too sick to go to the gym you realize how much you miss it27

Is it my imagination, or have my skin tags disappeared since eating healthier and losing weight? A while ago i had been contemplating buying some of that otc skin tag stuff from the drugstore, but just never got around to it. I was looking in the bathroom mirror the other day and realized the ones on my neck had vanished. Has this happened to anyone else?8

It hasn't for me, but I'll start keeping an eye on mine. I actually started growing more over the last two years when I really started packing the weight. I'd love to think that losing skin tags is a side effect of losing weight.
I've DIY'd a few removals at home w/ dental floss.3 -

I have used tea tree oil for those. If they are pretty small it works well. It stinks like tea tree oil, but it works. I think that most of the otc remedies are just tea tree oil.1 -

Yup, this is a feeling i know only too well. Even perching on a stool to clear my daughter's toys from the floor is painful (I can't kneel down at the moment due to a cycling accident) - my bones and muscles keep "clicking" - My glasses keep falling down my nose. I know I should go in and have them adjust, but that would mean an extra trip in my car, where my tushy will hurt from lack of cushion
This is a complete nuisance - my glasses slide down my nose no matter what position I'm in and if I lean forward, they just fall off altogether. I put it down to losing fat from my head, especially the sides where my glasses were literally wedged in place. - There are so many more choices of clothing now that I'm smaller - I had thought that maybe this was perception, when I was shopping plus sizes, but when I went over to the "other side" of the store, I was overwhelmed with the choices I had.
This is a wonderful experience, don't you think? I've gone down through the sizes from 5XL to a "small" and I have to keep doing a double-take when I see what now fits me. Love it, love it, love it. And I have to buy MORE clothes as there's more room in my chest of drawers to keep it all! The downside is that sorting the washing takes longer as I get my teenage daughter's clothes mixed up with mine, so I have to check the labels (we both wear mainly dark clothes; I haven't yet dared to move into brighter colours)
and this may be TMI but sex is WAY more fun.
Isn't it just ?

That your feet will end up, quite literally, just skin and bone. My feet are freezing cold ALL the time now, way worse than when I was obese. I have to wear two pairs of socks in this cold weather we're having, thermal ones at that.
I now know why my husband prefers me to go to bed before he does; it's so I don't use him as a hot water bottle13 -

I have a pillow strategically wedged in between the blankets. It doesn't move easily, so when I do roll over I get stuck on it. That and a cat on the other side mostly keeps me on my back and sides.7 -

Most of mine have gone as well. My surgeon told me that people who grow skin tags often have polyps in their colon. Get your colonoscopy folks.6 -
I'm 74 pounds down and a long way to go but three things stand out so far.
1. I get lots of compliments on my hair. I think people notice a difference in me but aren't sure what it is and my hair (Is it longer? lighter? Shorter?) is the go to. I just change those comments in my mind to "man you look good".
2. None of my shoes fit anymore. I was ready to buy new clothes but needing new shoes is an expensive surprise.
3. I always knew I was competitive but I had no idea could use that to help me get and stay healthy. Nothing makes me happier than being in the top on my steps challenges and nothing makes me get out and walk faster than being at the bottom of the list. I am training for a 5K and I'm using that competitive edge that was dormant to drive me to my goals.23 -
When it's been years, and you get your first compliments from complete strangers about your small size!
Not to mention cat-calls from men driving past.
Looking back, I think this may have made my guy a bit worried or jealous. Oh well.13 -
Your shoes may no longer fit.
Don't be too quick to resize your wedding bands, most jewelers won't do it more than twice.
Find and make friends with your local consignment shop, don't splurge too much on clothes until you reach (and have stayed for a while at) goal.
Some of your friends and family members will not be supportive.
It's not a linear process (especially for us girls)! Some days/weeks you will not lose anything and that's okay. Stick to your plan.
This is so awesome never realized the shoe thing until I lost the weight the first time 3yrs ago can't wait to again ❤3 -
-When you get to fill your ribs and you no longer have the midsection fat padding when your arms are down or you cross your hands.
-when people at work look you up and down like they want to undress you to see how good looking you are and how in the world you did it by males and females.
-when people at work ask you if they can go to the gym with you and workout and then change their minds when you come to them to go and they are not ready because they have changed their minds and claim that they are not mentally ready yet because in reality what they want is a magic pill and not hard working out or calorie deficits in their food.
- when your wife salivates when looking at you and can't wait to do the love dance with you every chance she gets.16 -

So true...I find this can be true when you make any other positive change too; sometimes you have to let go of people and move towards people who share your positivity and make you feel good about yourself.11 -
So many people on this thread are having trouble with bra fitting! I had a lot of trouble as well. I've gone from a 40DDD to a 32DD while losing 90 lbs. I'm 10 lbs from my goal so I'm hoping that my bra size isn't going to change much more. My cup size stayed constant for most of that time and only started decreasing recently.
This may have been mentioned already--I haven't gone back and read every post--but try bratabase.com. You'll need to take a lot of measurements, but then the site will suggest sizes as well as specific bras for your body shape. You can also input detailed notes on how your current bras fit, and it will incorporate that into your suggestions.
For those looking for a great sports bra (or regular bra) for larger cup sizes, try Panache. I'm a runner and I wear their underwire sports bras, which are easily convertible between standard or racerback style straps, and they fasten like a regular bra instead of those awful elastic sports bras that you have to contort yourself to get in and out of.
@apullum As a busty girl, I learned from http://www.bigbustsupport.com that if it can fit over your head/shoulders, it will NOT do it's job and Panache bras are THE BEST! I'm also a big fan of Herroom.com for bra shopping. 30H isn't something that I find readily in stores unless I got to a specialty shop in Austin.

I was asked to put together a warmup routine for a team I belong to. You know, music, a bit of cardio to get the blood flowing and then some stretching. The season doesn't start till May but I'm kind of stressing about it. At what point in this fitness/weightloss journey of mine did I become an "expert"? At no point? Exactly!! Lol

I regained the 30 lbs I once lost and I'm trying to lose them again. Thanks for the inspiration!16

That when you sleep on your side, it hurts to have your knees resting on top of one another...7
-
That you actually want to move your body.....I don't want to go to a movie I want to snowshoe or hike or skate even if it's an activity that isn't my fav still better than sitting around
That I need new friends.....friends that want do stuff other then sit and eat30 -
You start to understand the meaning of 'Boney butt' when you sit on the toilet and start considering the cushioned seat.16

that there will sometimes be a tinge of anxiety before trying on a smaller clothes size and then a rush of relief when it fits lol.28
