20lbs by summer is very achievable. 2lbs a week and no more is the ideal.
Unfortunately quick and safe are too different things, in your case a simple calorie controlled diet Is enough with moderate exercise.1 -

depends on how much you have to lose. if you have only 20lbs to lose then 2lbs a week is not sustainable,its too aggressive of a goal18 -
There really is no "quick and easy" to dieting. Track your calories, use a food scale, and work out at a moderate level. It's still February, so you have plenty of time to do this safely.5

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with the above poster. There really is no quick and easy way. We don't gain the weight overnight and it sure isn't going to go away overnight. Could we start by asking you how much you have to lose?1

20lbs is doable, but it'd be at least 4 month to achieve. That's about 5lbs a month which is more than accetable for weightloss. Just cut calories and try to grt active at least 30 minutes a day. Walk, run, ride a bike, swim. Just move and get your heart working.5

The best exercises are as follows:
Fork putdowns superset with table pushbacks.
Or just take your goal weight and figure out how many calories it takes to maintain it with your activity in mind, then eat that every day.4 -

5lbs a month is doable if she has more than 50 lbs to lose.since we dont know if she is overweight or not,or just trying to lose 20 vanity lbs. lets just say its safe for those with a good amount of weight to lose.0 -
If you put in your weight and weight loss goal (.5 to 2 pounds per week) and follow the calorie recommendations on here, then you will easily lose 20 pounds. You have to log everything you eat or drink and not go over. I think you can do this within 4 months easily. I lost 54 pounds in 7 months doing nothing but this.2

But you *had* 54 pounds to lose. If the OP only has 20 pounds to lose, she may not be able to sustain a larger deficit in a healthy way. MFP will not recommend eating below 1200 cals/day. If, for example, she is small enough and sedentary enough that she only burns 1700 cals/day, she will not be able to lose more than 1 pound/week (and probably should not aim for more than 0.5 pounds/week).
So, basically, we need stats before we can answer the question.9 -
Eating 300 - 500 calories under TDEE every day, additionally, .in my case, taking vitamins and having enough protein so that I don't get lathargic while I'm at it1

Also depends where OP lives - as in, is she talking about by Northern Hemisphere summer in just over 3 months ( probably not acheivable ) or Southern Hemisphere next summer 9 months away ( realistically acheivable )

Whether it's possible, depends on how much you have to lose, when summertime is, and how accurately and consistenly you can stick to an appropriate calorie deficit.
Whether it's going to be easy, depends on how many hoops and loops you go through to make it difficult (and what you consider easy). Losing weight is simple, but it takes effort, commitment and knowledge to do it effectively.4 -

I exercise 5 days a weeks and eat around 1200 to 1300 cals. Spme days more depending on the type of exercise I do.
I have been losing around 2kg a month.
I drink a lot of water and avoid pastas and rice at night because ot makes me bottled. Eat good foods like veggies, fruit, beans, rice, lentils. Avoid meat and dary, but if you still eat it make smart choices about it, no fats.
This has worked for me, went vegan and lost like 3 kg, after that I started MFP.
Base line is: exercise and eat in a deficit and you can do it by summer like I will2 -
There really is no "easy" way or quick fix for weight loss. The only equation for losing weight is to eat in a calorie deficit, using whatever strategy you wish. 20 lbs by summer is probably doable, depending on your current stats.0

2 lbs a week requires a 1000 calories a day deficit, not 500. That's why it's too aggressive for some, because that would put them at a daily calorie intake that is way too low to be healthy or sustainable. It's not about being mean or unsupportive.13 -
For reference:
If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal9 -

Please understand that every body requires a certain amount of nutrients, protein, fat carbs to maintain healthy functions. Every person will have a minimum calorie requirement based on that. MFP sets that at 1200 for females and 1500 for males. Going below those calorie limits (unless you are tiny) is bad for your health.
So we need to know this persons stats (height, weight, sex, age) to be able to say if 20 lbs is doable or not. A blanket "yes you can do it" may lead someone to restricting calories beyond what is healthy.
Being supportive or motivational without that information can lead someone to think it is okay to eat in a way that is harmful. That's why people do it.
I'm 260 lbs. I can lose 2 lbs per week. I lost 2.5 this last week and am okay with that. 20 lbs in 3-4 months for me is, literally, not breaking a sweat and I plan to lose more than that. But I have a hell of a lot more to lose. If someone is at the top range of a healthy BMI, they SHOULD NOT try to lose at that rate.
Sometimes the most supportive thing you can tell someone is to not do something harmful.15 -

However you'll be hard pressed to find any study that backs 1000kcal/day deficit = 2lb loss per week.
That info is from bomb calorimetry and not studied in an organic environment.
In other words, someone's 1000kcal/day deficit may only equate to 1lb loss, or 1/4lb loss....
Keeping it simple:
Lift weights
Manage NEAT
Eat a balanced diet
Hydrate
Reduce stress
Sleep better
All the ingredients of a great lifestyle.1 -
Totally agree. All I'm saying is any individual just needs to hit their BMR (the amount of calories needed for your body to function) after that just exercise to hit your deficit. On days you don't exercise just break even and you will still lose weight over the course of a week. Losing 2lbs a week is not easy and not for everyone but it's a totally healthy weight loss amount if everything else lines up (sex, height, weight, age etc)0

Apologies you are right it is a 1000 calorie deficit. I'm sure I've read loads that it's 500! Let's stick to 1lb a week then! 2lbs is possible and on the edge of healthy but very difficult.

Just remember we can create deficits in a few ways.
1) reduce calories
2) manage NEAT
3) add exercise
If you do all three you'll want to monitor stress, sleep, resting heart rate.
If any of those start to give you trouble, ease off a bit and see how you feel.

why does the op have to avoid meat and dairy? and why avoid those things with fats? fats are needed for hormone support and so on. fat doesnt make you fat and only should someone cut down or avoid fatty foods if they have a health issue(like FH)3 -
