Tonight I had the dumbest conversation with target staff
So my local target sell a select few items that are gluten free, which was a wonderful find for us. It's very limited but we love the selection (isis pizzas, breakfast sandwiches, applegate gluten free chicken fingers etc).
So tonight we are there and I grab a whole bunch of udis breakfast sandwiches. I wasn't really paying attention to the date on them. My sister wife goes.... those expired last April. I was like what?!? So I look and sure enough the expiration date was 4/2016. I was like, that can't right, maybe that is the manufacture date, but nope it was the expiration date.
So we calmly bring them to the register and tell the cashier they are expired, and here is where the fun begins lol. Her response was-no they expire thisbup coming April. Uhhhh no, we are in 2017 not 2016. She continued to
Assert that they don't expire for another 2 months. Finally I politely ask if she can page a supervisor while ringing everything else up (so people wouldn't be held up). Manager comes, I explain the situation. Her response "oh no... gluten free just means the product doesn't expire". Wait, what?!? We gave up after that and literally laughed the entire way home.

And these were breakfasts sandwiches? With what, eggs and cheese and stuff in them?? They're going to kill someone!6

Hahahaha wow. That's... special. I'd be writing to them, that's a mighty level of dumbassery which apparently goes up through the ranks.11

Someone needs to send the health inspectors. That is seriously weird.11

the main question here is:
1) were they only trying to sell it to you no matter what so they even lied to your face in order to do so;
or
2) they were really that ignorant ?9 -

I don't even know what to say to that. It's like they've actually turned stupidity into an art form.11 -
This makes me sad2

I had a client a few backs ask me how a 250mg tablet was bigger than a 500mg tablet.
I explained that they were totally different medications, therefore had different volumes and densities etc.
Nope couldn't get it. Said he was emailing trading standards about the company manufacturing the 500mg tablet, that they were ripping him off lol.
I still laugh to my self that someone can be that stupid.
The worst thing about your incident is they probably put them back out and laughed that you were the stupid one!
I'm glad you didn't eat them, especially with you being pregnant.7 -

Egg whites, cheese and chicken sausage sandwich in between two pieces of flat bread. I highly recommend them if lookng for an easy, quick gf breakfast.Alatariel75 wrote: »Hahahaha wow. We called udis when we got home and they were absolutely appalled, especially since in major grocery stores they usually do their own restocking, but at this target they do not. They were incredibly apologetic and are mailing us a whole bunch of coupons and what not.starryphoenix wrote: »Someone needs to send the health inspectors. That is seriously weird.
We called udis. We screty expect they justnlutnotnright back on the shelf. Going tomorrow to see if they did. If they did, we will be calling the department of health.

Wow! *head desk* oh I'm sure they did, and we are going to go check tomorrow. If they did, a little birdy is going to sing to the dept of health.7 -

Something being past its Sell By date doesn't mean it has gone bad.5

No it doesn't, but the guidelines are there for how long the food should be kept, frozen or not. The Target clerks should have known better. Seriously inexcusable. I have brought things to their attention that are past the expiration date and had no problem exchanging them. Things past expiration date should be pulled off the shelves when items are being stocked.
Perhaps they should have employee meetings refreshing their memories on what year we are in.

I'm sorry but at ALMOST A YEAR past the Sell By date, is definitely NOT edible.
It is understood that the Sell By date is a guideline put out by manufacturers to get grocers to push product and it is not a safety date, Best By and Use-By dates also are not safety dates.
However, the FSIS(Food Safety and Inspection Service) recommends that frozen egg or egg products be eaten no later than 12 months if frozen and unopened. Cooked sausage, has a recommended storage time of only 1-2 months.

Seriously? Meat past it's expiration date can be deadly. Also, it didnt say "sell by" or "best by", it said "expires". Big difference.
Although I see you completely missed the point , that GF items do expire.

True story: When I was in high school I had a summer job at a grocery store. My only task was to find all the products in the store that were past the "sell by/use by/best before" date, take them to the back room, and remove the dates with a razor blade and/or rubbing alcohol. Then put a sticker/stamp on with a new date. The manager said those dates were on there for the benefit of the store, not the customers, so it's fine.16

Wait, was it frozen or refrigerated? If frozen, it's not dangerous (but almost certainly dried out and nasty after that length of time).0

Lthey are supposed to be frozen but this store sells them in the open refrigerated section next to dairy isle.1 -

I don't think I could have helped myself. But I'm an argue-er.
If it doesn't expire, why does it have an expiration date??
That would have driven me nuts!!6 -
Contact Target headquarters. They'd probably love to know one of their stores is selling food expired for a year and employees laughing it off when a customer brings it to their attention.12

This is true, but it does mean it should not be sold. And she was at a store, right?3 -
This wasn't what the post was about but please tell me you have a gluten allergy... So sick of people eating gluten free that don't have a health issue with it. GF bread is NOT better for you than regular bread. Save your money people! By the way, my wife has a gluten allergy so I'm not just saying this... I have literally seen people say "oh, I only eat gluten free" and when you say "so what IS gluten?" they have no clue! Just jumped on some bandwagon! So ignorant.6

Alternative facts. Lol4

This could happen anywhere with any clerk. They are not nutritional or dietary geniuses. A lot of people out there have no idea. Sad but true. You would be wise to call the 1-800- customer service number to report this. They are obviously not following the FIFO rule when stocking shelves.
They all should be aware of what the dates mean. Management especially. Best by, sell by and expires by are different terms with different meanings. Training here has likely fallen through the cracks. This could be dangerous if someone eats something that has expired. Most of us know to check the dates, but unfortunately some people never think to check.
The number to call is: 1-800-440-0680.2
