I started eating one meal a day a few days ago. I tell you all it takes is a MADE UP MIND. I'm already down 12 pounds and it hasn't even been a full week yet. I'm more energetic! I just passed my mid term with flying colors! It's such a healthy lifestyle change, and I found out about it from The Honorable Elijah Muhammad in his book called "How to eat to live"!

How many calories do you think you are consuming now?2
-
I've been eating about 1000 calories in my meals. But they're healthy calories. I have beans, fruit, avocados, whole wheat bread, salad, stuff like that for my meal. I break my fast at 4pm. I sit down and pray before eating, and I really take my time with my meal, because it's my gift to my body for the day2
-
Whatever works for you but I will stick to my 5 meals a day. I never get hungry this way.4
-
Earl, I hear ya. Different strokes for different folks. But if you do a little bit of research the lining of the stomach gets severely worn out by eating so many meals a day. It causes a lot of health problems. So eating one meal a day is not only beneficial for losing weight. It benefits you overall.2
-
You have done this for less than a week and you are an expert. I'm in for the Q&A.19
-
Cathipa, I'm definitely not an expert. Just someone on a journey wanting to share my experience thus far. So please, miss me with the hating. Why do people get so negative? Lol!4

Eating one meal a day has worked well for me...It takes that worry out of my day. I do count calories because I can pack a lotta calories into one meal consumed with a protein shake. I might be concerned about my muscle mass if I lost 12lbs in just a couple of days, tho.2

It's normal to lose a large amount of weight the first week of dieting. Most of that is water and waste due to eating a smaller volume of food, reduced sodium intake, and lowering carbohydrate intake (lower than you were used to eating.
Combine that was only eating 1,000 calories and it's not surprising you lost that much weight already. The only benefit to eating one meal a day is that it is easier to control calorie intake. Continuing to eat only 1,000 calories could actually cost you in the long run. If you are unable to eat an appropriate amount of calories in your one meal you may need to consider adding a second meal.7 -
Mother, that may be true. I'm not there on my journey yet though. How long have you been eating one meal a day?0
-
I have one proper meal a day, and two shakes, and maybe a couple of snacks. I'd be starving way too often if I only consumed calories at one point during the day. And the "eating food often wears out the stomach" stuff sounds very science-light. At best.1
-
Usm , thank you very much for the advice! I eat a lot of navy beans and lentils so it fills me pretty quickly, hence the lower amount of calories. I'm excited to see what the second week brings as far as weight loss and energy. Maybe you'll tune back in for an update to see if ive still lost just as much weight ☺0

Golbat, to each his own. It's funny how doctors try to advise us on how many times to eat a day, yet they live just as long as we do, or sometimes an even shorter life span. My one meal a day was advice from someone who not only practices it themselves, but many others practice it as well. I've seen the benefits with my own eyes. So I'll be going with my one meal a day, and you do you! Does that sound science-light as well?1
-
"I'll ignore science if I can come up with anecdotes that appeal to me" does actually sound science-light.14

Round of applause for Golbat!!!1

I'll stick around to see how this goes for you long term, but first I have some questions:
Age:
Height:
Weight:
Activity level:
Exercise:
Knowing these now and then again in a few months can really help gauge your progress. 12 pounds in a week for someone with 100 pounds to lose is normal. 12 pounds in a week for someone with 20 pounds to lose is dangerous.2 -
I love love love how people like to TRY to shut you down, because they are unhappy within themselves. It's a sad sad world we live in today. But hey, I'm in good company because they did it to Jesus as well ☺
I'd like to inspire whomever I can with my one meal a day journey. Nay-sayers, go find some happiness would ya.2 -
Where did anyone shut you down? I am confused.7
-
So yeah I'll be posting every Tuesday with honest progress! I hope this inspired someone. I sure am motivated and inspired myself!!!1

We see a lot of people come here with very dramatic results for the first week and their method ends up being unsustainable. We don't see them for months or years when they finally come back with another diet they've jumped on, then fallen off again.
I personally like to help educate people on the various methods and the fact that weight loss comes down to calories rather than the method you used to stick to those calories. If you can fit an appropriate amount of calories in during your one meal and it works for you long term that's great. It's also a good idea for you to keep an open mind to what other have to say, because some of us have been there before.15 -

What's your starting weight at least? This isn't a hater question or trying to shoot you down. It's to see what progress you've made from week to week.1 -
Yes ma'am! I'll be back next week with results, and the week after that, and so on until I reach my goal. Anyone who wants to watch my progress is welcomed to do so.0

My goal weight is 1750

New meadow thank you so much for that information. I am checking it out right now0

You should look up Dr. Fung. There is actually a TON of very reliable research about how the body benefits from having a break from digestion. Reguardless of how it enables a person to stick to a calorie deficit. A body in fasted state reduces insulin and increases your bodies sensitivity to it thereby reversing insulin resistance. Dr. Fung prescribes intermittent fasting to his obese patients with type 2 diabetes and kidney failure. Many of them are cured of type 2 diabetes and off all meds fairly quickly.
Brad Pilon's Eat Stop Eat book also shares the research on fasting. The whole book is basically a publicized version of his thesis.
Go read up on the research that has been done on the body in the fasted state. The benefits are many and backed by reliable science. I started with watching interviews with Dr. Fung and also Brad Pilon on YouTube. Next time someone calls it "science light" you can point them to some websites with the references that prove otherwise :-D
Even just a quick search with a discerning eye on pubmed.com can provide lots of studies illustrating the benefits.
Happy researching!

Btw, I didn't read the entire thread, but I noticed a bunch of comments about OMAD being "science light." Go read up on the research that has been done on the body in the fasted state. losing weight from being a caloric deficit has helped people get off meds and reverse their diabetes. its not curable though. it can come back if you regain the weight.if you have kidney failure its not usually curable ,you can get dialysis and hope it goes into a type of remission, or get a transplant.(my mother in law had failing kidneys, the dialysis didnt work and she didnt get a transplant-she has been gone over 20 years)3 -

Elijah Muhammad was a minister,.he had no degree in science,he wasnt a dietitian,he had no credentials. being a minister doesnt make you an expert on ways to eat or to give diet advice.anyone can write a diet book now adays and someone out there will follow the advice in it. doesnt make it reputable. you are losing weight quickly because you have a bigger deficit than what is healthy.9
