5 k first thing this morning to bring my total to 40 of the 75 I've committed to this month.3

I had a great run today. It was cool and a little cloudy.
I do have a question for the experienced runners. Do you walk any during your run, and if so do you calculate how much distance you run vs walk? I started out with c25k and so I walk for 5 minutes (usually .3 miles) before I start running. Then i usally walk for about 5 minutes to cool down when i am through running. I'm just curious to know if most of you subtract the walking or just consider the whole thing the run.
I keep all the distance. I also count walking miles because running is about building cardiovascular endurance. Walking, or any activity during an active recovery day counts towards my personal goals, even if walking is all I'm able to do- walking is just very slow running after all.
I build my run distances while decreasing the walk gradually. I find I like distance increments rather than times. So, use what works for you. Just use what works for you... Honestly I liked running 1k, walking 0.1 miles. I'm not back there yet. If my overall pace is less than 15min/mile, I'm on track. Keep goals loose. Don't sweat it if you can't hit your targets everytime.
OR... If you have an HRM you can always use your HR. Find your comfortable pace/HR and when it gets out of that range, walk until it's back down and breathing is comfortable then resume running, keeping your pace reasonable.

Happy Easter to everyone that celebrates the holiday! Back in 2014, I ran the RnR San Diego Marathon and there on the big hill at mile 19/20ish was a sign that said "I Eat Hills for Breakfast." It was the first time I had heard that running phrase and loved it. I've referenced it several times since then...including this morning when I ate hills for my Easter brunch The hills weren't actually that terribly big, but miles 3 and 4 had some good ones (to me). I had a much better run than I did yesterday and I could have easily kept going for another 3 miles but knee was starting to feel a little funny (swollen and the muscle seemed a little sore, like I've been overcompensating), plus I had later plans with the family anyway. I've got a follow up with the gait analysis PT tomorrow morning and she's squeezing me into a smaller appointment time as I had to reschedule, so I want to make sure I get the important things addressed.3 -

Had pizza and too much wine last night with the boyfriend. I was already considering some major diet revisions after last week's migraine issues. But the impacts of last night made that oh so much more likely. I am traveling the next two weeks straight for work, and was driving today. I had no intentions or motivation for workout when I got to the destination, but decided I needed to remind myself further why cleaning up my diet was important, and take my sluggish butt for a run. I know this town is supposed to have a good path somewhere, but I'll be darned if I could find it. So, I made it about 3.7 miles before I got tired of trying to remember where I was vs where hotel was.

@kgirlhart I used to walk about 1 km before and after my runs. Now before my runs, I walk maybe 50-100 metres, but my first km is usually slow. I try to walk a few hundred metres at the end of my runs.
I've only ever started my watch when I start running. I'm in OCD hell because I've had to record some walks on Strava (to test my Garmin calorie counting). Normally I would never let walking onto Strava, unless it's a rare race/event.
I don't walk during my runs, unless it's a few steps to take a sip of water at a water station in a race, and I find my legs go wobbly when I do that, hence why I don't walk.

You guys - I ran a 10K race today! I wasn't planning to, just woke up and was planning to go to my usual Saturday long run, but saw posts on facebook from people in the group who were doing the 10k. Well, heck, I might as well do that instead! So I threw on some clothes, jumped in the car and got myself signed up for the race with only about 15 minutes to spare. Usually I'm so early for these things, and doing it all last minute I had no time to get nervous!
It was a lot chillier than I thought at the start and I was regretting just wearing my tank top but it turned out to be a really lovely day. Slightly windy, but the sun was out and it was just cool enough that I didn't get overheated. This was my first 10k race ever (I've run 5k, 8k, and a half but never 10k), so obviously new to this course. I had expected hills from hearing about it but they said they revised the course to get rid of the "big hill". Overall it was rolling hills and pretty nice, except for one sneaky hill at the end that was kind of tough. I tried to maximize my downhills to keep my average pace up. It really felt great, and what a way to get out of my running slump! Lots of personal bests according to Strava:

After the race they served loaded tater tots that were amazing - they had eggs and pulled pork with cheese and sour cream on them. Plus some local hard cider.
I know that's a lot for a 10k race, but it was a great and much needed good run for me today. I feel like a real runner again
You are amazing....wake up....decide to run in a race...no planning....never ran the race distance and then "Knock it out of the park."8 -

@ereck44 - That pretty much depends on a variety of things. Is this going to be your first time at that distance at the Indy Mini? What is your longest run so far and how many times have you run that distance? If this is your first half and you have only built up to 10-12 miles on just a few runs then it is probably too soon to attempt another half two weeks later. You will need those two weeks as a recovery period and can even reverse taper to get back to shape, but at that two week mark it might not be the wisest to do another HM right at that moment. However, if you feel like your training has been going really well, you feel good during your recovery and think you have bounced back to full shape in that two weeks then you can definitely do it. If you have run HM's before and especially if you have regularly been doing 10-12 mile long runs then you should also be able to do it provided you do sensible runs in between events to recover and keep from losing fitness. For point of reference, after about 18 months into running I was up around 40 mpw and doing great. I ran 5 HM's on 5 consecutive weekends with no issues, I just kept my weekly training plan going for 5 weeks with the HM's as my long runs. I even ran fast at a couple of them, but none of them were "raced".
Thanks for the reply. I have run 5 half marathons since 2014. It will be my fourth Indy mini. I am not sure what my weekly mileage is but I am going to start tracking it. Usually run a long run day and 2 shorter run days per week. My long run this week will probably be 11 miles and will run 11 miles minimum as a long run until my event. I love the idea of using the half marathon as my long run day....such a smart idea. Thus far I haven't had an injury but have a crazy night shift schedule that I am working around.1 -

Thanks for the advise @Elise4270 , @OSUbuckeye906 , and @Orphia. I usually just walk at the beginning and and of the run. I don't know why I never thought about waiting to start tracking the run when I actually started running. Maybe because I started out just walking. Or maybe I just had a blond moment. I will start tracking it that way. Thanks again!1

Sunday is our traditional "Shorty Day" and a day we use to encourage other runners to join in for the fun.

Had a good Saturday. I went for a morning run intending on volunteering for the Yorktown Victory YMCA 10k. It was the RRCA State Championship for the 10k distance, as well as, a super Grand Prix for the three local running clubs. So there were a lot of good runners in it.
I got down to the race start around 7a. The race was supposed to start at 8:30. I talked for a second and found out they were good on volunteers so I kept running for a little while longer. I finished my 5 easy mile run and went to the start around 8 to take in the atmosphere and cheer on the runners. I had brought along yogurt and a banana to have for breakfast. While I was waiting, I heard someone call my name, and it was my best friend growing up. I hadn't seen him in 15 years at least so I decided to run it with him last minute. So I gulped down my yogurt and granola, ate my banana and started stretching so I wouldn't tighten up. I felt I was ready to go. He was going for a PR of 57:00 or under. I felt like I could do that and probably push him a little. The race director came on the PA and said a suspicious package was found on the course. They were trying to reroute the course and would be starting soon. Well, after all the emergency vehicles went through all the safety protocol, it was a lost back pack. The race finally started at 10a (1-1/2 hours late). By that time my belly was full, my quads were tight and I was worried I would just be holding my friend back. The race started and I was dragging along. I told my friend to just run his race. A 1/2 mile into the race there's this hill that's no joke. I struggled up it and about half a mile after that I felt good. I caught up to my friend and ended up having a good race. I didn't push myself and it was nice for a change of not having to "race" in a race. He finished unofficially at 54:50. He was super excited and really happy. The results still aren't out as of this morning.
I'm really excited for @MobyCarp and @lporter229. I'm praying for a fast, fun, free of injury race for both of you!! You're an inspiration to me.
@MNLittleFinn You're doing great! Keep it up, you never know.

Today's notes: "slept in" today until 0500, and that felt good, though I could use some more sleep. Got my 5 miles in going around town. Averaged 9:32 pace with HR average of 151, so a fairly solid "easy run" Plan also called for 4 strides. I got those in, but I had zero pep in my legs, so it was a struggle......LOL....strides being a struggle...I am tired.

Good morning all! Anyone else live streaming Boston on their phone while trying to pretend like they're getting some work done?

Resting today. My doctor appointment is scheduled for Friday. Going to listen to my body and try not to run until I'm pain free. The hip is really sore today. Sigh.1

Another 4 miles on Sunday in the beautiful weather. It was a tad humid but 68 and breezy -perfect.
Today a friend convinced me to try a kettle bell class before work. I am leaving for an out of town work conference on Wednesday so I know my running opportunities are going to be few and far between this week. I decided to squeeze in another 3 miles on the treadmill before the class.
Before today, I had never tried kettle bells. How hard could it be, right? Ha!! My butt has been thouroghly kicked! My whole body is still shaky 30 minutes later. I am going to be sore tomorrow....

Haven't been on here since Friday, since I was away with family for the holiday weekend. So much to catch up on! Lol.
Friday was a lovely 8 mile run. Pushed my pace a bit on a few uphill sections in the second half of my run, really pleased with my pace. Yesterday was my long run, only 10 miles because it was a cutback week. Lovely day out, but had my first fall of the year. Nothing awful, just a little roadrash and some bruises from apparently not noticing a driveway dip and falling on the sidewalk, lol. I think that bruise on my left knee might end up being a doozy though.
Funnily enough, this morning my Facebook Memories were kind enough to remind me that exactly one year and one day ago I had taken another running tumble, that ended up being part of a 3 tumbles in 3 weeks streak, so hopefully I will not repeat that trend this year!
This week is going to be a bit crazy for me. It's actually the peak mileage week of my half marathon training plan (47 miles), but I'm flying to the Dominican Republic on Thurs, and staying til the following Wed. Normally today is a rest day, but I'm actually going to run today, tomorrow, and Wed, so that I can minimize the number of runs I need to do when I'm on vacation. My long run this week is also supposed to be a distance PR for me (14 miles!!!) and I'm thinking I'll aim for that on Wednesday, with tomorrow being my recovery run, since I don't think it would be a good idea to attempt a distance PR in a brand new location I'm not familiar with, in tropical, hot, humid conditions.
My original schedule is:
Mon: rest
Tues: 8
Wed: 11
Thurs: 4 recovery (the plan actually has the recovery runs on Sat, but I switched b/c it was too much w/zumba)
Fri: 10
Sat: rest
Sun: 14 long
I am going to aim for:
Mon: 11
Tues: 4 recovery
Wed: 14 long
Thurs: rest (travel day)
Fri, Sat, Sun: fit in the 10 and 8 milers based around what our vacation plans are
Hopefully this works out and I'm able to pull off that PR long run on Wed.3 -

Wishing I could be watching Boston on TV or streaming right now, but I am filling in for the boss man and for a few people out of office. I'm going to try and pull up the bib numbers after I post my morning run update so I can at least check on those.
Today was my first mid-week long run, 8 miles at easy effort. It was a good run and I was very pleased with my times. So really the whole run was mostly good news!
Just about 1/3 of a mile into my run I ran into the husband of the couple whose dog was attacked last Wednesday, at almost the exact same spot (looks like our schedules sync up perhaps). He remembered my name and thanked me for jumping in to help. I asked how everyone was doing and he said they had to put the dog down due to internal injuries that the vet could not be sure could be fixed even with about 10k in surgeries. He was walking a new puppy that was cute as could be. It was a different breed, he said he was not trying to replace his old dog and was super happy about the new dog, so he seemed to be handling things pretty well. While this stop slowed down my first mile I did not care one bit, I was content to get an update even though it was bad news. I had been wondering about all that for the whole week. My spirits were actually kind of high despite the news being bad for that poor doggie, mostly because the guy was so happy to see me again and so friendly, thankful, but mostly because he seemed to be genuinely happy to be walking his new dog and was not looking back. It rubbed off somehow.
