Hi all, I'm a transgender man newly on 80mg of testosterone every 2 weeks. Should I enter male or female in order to allow the app to properly calculate my metabolism? Thanks!

Good question! I would think the gender you were born with. @Alex ?2

How much difference is there between the two? Did you look at both. I would use an average of the two and then adjust after a month if needed.
Really, we all have to experiment a bit. The numbers are a general starting point but the experiment is ours to run.
Welcome.27 -
I would stay on the safe side and start with male. If you find yourself losing weight too slowly (less than 0.5 - 1 lb a week) over the course of about a month, then you can lower your calories manually or switch the gender to female if the website allows you to do so.9

I would think male. The testosterone might not be affecting your metabolism right now, but I would assume as you transition further it would affect it more and more. But you really should discuss this with your doctor. They might know better what your calorie intake should be based on your fitness goals.5

I would guess that the testosterone should help even out the metabolism difference. How about go with your preference and then manually override the calorie goal that it gives you for somewhere between the two? The vast majority of the time this starts as a guessing game anyway. So start in the middle, see what your results are after a few weeks, and then adapt accordingly.14

Thanks all for the help!! I'm going to start with an average of both and talk to my doctor next week for suggestions.26

You're just playing coy hiding behind that greenery.kshama2001 wrote: »Good question! I would think the gender you were born with. @Alex ?
I'm not sure how this is abusive. It's a fair guess, based on the fact that men and women have different base metabolic rates.

I don't know if you will find this useful:

MFP uses the Mifflin-St. Jeor calculation to work out your calorific needs. In this calculation, if all else is equal, then males only get 166 calories more than females for their BMR. The biggest differences will come from the fact females are (generally) shorter and lighter than males.
So, tbh, it shouldn't really make much difference which you choose to do your calculation.15 -
Welcome to MyFitnessPal @beckmageau !
It sounds like you have gotten great advice here and MFP doesn't have additional guidance to offer that hasn't already been suggested. We previously suggested members select the gender they most closely associated with as opposed to their biological gender and then customize the goals. This was primarily because our lack of gender neutral pronouns, which has recently been improved.
Wishing you the best of luck with all of your health and fitness goals.11 -

^Not abusive, I cleared the flag and appreciate the responses and the mention.6 -

This makes sense to me.0 -
If you have a Y chromosome then you should go with male. If you have two X chromosomes then go with female.3

^^ Except that testosterone supplementation will skew that equation.
Probably why posters have suggested take average of male/female for same height/weight and then adjust over time if it doesn't seem right.

Hey I'm trans as well, I've been on and off testosterone for a while (currently off). When I've been on T for more than a month I pick male, but if I haven't/not on t I pick female. Good luck!5

No, it really won't skew it all that much. Sure, it can result in gains to athletic performance (which is why it is prohibited in sporting competition) but unless someone is training for such an event it isn't going to magically change how a person is made. Things like body structure, the number of fat cells, height, etc. are all going to be determined by biological gender constraints, so ones metabolism will also follow biological gender.1 -

^^^ That.
The biggest determinant of your calorific needs by a long margin is total mass so pick the one you identify with and tweak depending on results over times as necessary.
Best of luck.0 -
Exogenous testosterone (in males) causes an uplift in metabolic rate however I am unsure if this will be the same for people using it for transitioning.
I would set MFP to female and see how your weight loss goes. If you lose too fast you can always eat more and vice versa.0 -

I was being oversensitive and my first instinct was to protect. I will take more time to read and observe before responding next time.
Again my apologies.
I can certainly appreciate and respect this. I also think your honesty is refreshing.
It isn't how the flagging system works. The moderator team won't see those random flags, so if you see something you are concerned about, it's better to report it and they can decide if it breaks forum rules, they will remove it. The spam option is for spam bots, and the abuse option is for blatant abuse, such as pornography.4
