Watermelon

I love watermelon. I always thought it has like 0 calories. It has 30 per 100grams which doesn't seem like a lot until you realize that being a lot of water makes watermelon heavy. 100g is like 2 bites.
Now watermelon is still delicious summery and fits my macros but I was shocked when my serving was like 200 calories.

No food has zero calories. Some may be low calories but nothing is truly zero.6

I rather eat watermelon than a Snickers bar9

i eat a lot of watermelon in the summer! It's my ice cream! 500g is 150 calories, and a lot of food! Much better than bananas

What made you think watermelon was zero calories? It's basically sugar water with some fiber, flavor and vitamins. Ha.3 -
Anything edible that isn't ice has calories, some things more than others. Watermelon is one of the lower calorie fruits, so I'll take that. I love it and eat it all summer.9

Probably all those stupid lists online about negative calorie foods. There is massive amounts of completely wrong information out there to confuse people.7 -
I eat frozen watermelon. Lovelovelove it. I've been eating about 400g of frozen watermelon as my nighttime snack. I know 400g is a "huge" amount, but it only has about 130 calories-- much less than a tiny snickers bar, and healthier than a (much smaller) bowl of ice cream!!

I miss the watermelons with the big seeds. Having a spitting contest was half the fun of eating the watermelon.11

I don't know why I thought a bowl would be like 50 calories I mainly posted due to how off my mental guess was. I can't be the only person ever amazed at serving vs Calories.5

Absolutely! Not just for watermelon, but for *everything*. I'm pretty sure that is the reason most of us ended up here. I was watching a documentary yesterday that said most of us underestimate the number of calories we eat by about 30-50%, because (1) our serving sizes are too large and (2) we forget what we eat even if we write down what we eat right after we eat it. I get confused all the time about what is considered a serving. Like a "serving" of meat is 4oz, but a "serving" of cheese is 1oz. And if you look on a regular bottle of soda, it states there are actually 2 servings per bottle, but they give the calorie count for 1 serving (and who generally only drinks 1/2 a bottle? I know I never did, and I was shocked the first time I noticed this.)
Part of the positive change is mindful eating-- becoming more aware of what and how much, which is what you have done with your watermelon. Awareness. And now choice. Look at the caloric difference in a "serving" of watermelon vs a serving of ice cream. And make the choice (or have both, if it fits in your calories.)5 -
Mmmm watermelon. Especially Hermiston Watermelons. Nothing like em.1

Oh no - we're all right here with ya on that one. That's why there's so many people with a weight problem.1 -

Are you weighing your watermelon now? Because you must take some pretty big bites and use big bowls (or pile your watermelon pretty high in a smaller bowl). 100 g of watermelon would be about two-thirds of a cup of diced or balled melon; 50 calories would be a little over a full cup of diced or balled melon. That seems like a pretty good calorie bargain to me. I can eat well over half a pound of watermelon, and still be under 100 calories.4 -
I have around 400g of watermelon, plus the same amount of cantaloupe every single day. A huge bowl for under 300 calories6

For the benefits you get from some food, its worth it. For me, it is way better to have a bowl of watermelon than a piece of cake. I don't mean all you IIFYM folks, but for people who want to choose more nutritious food vs a treat.

What? Are you implying people who do IIFYM don't care about nutrition?8 -

I have very fond memories of watermelon. It was one of my first solids after stomach surgery, it was in the heat of summer, and I was learning how to stay hydrated. Watermelon is heavenly.3

Where do people get the idea that flexible dieters eat nothing but cake? Wanting cake sometimes doesn't mean I don't eat watermelon... The two are so different that it isn't really an either/or choice. It sounds as silly as "it's way better to have an apple than chicken breast", yeah, both taste differently and serve different purposes. I'm not going to eat cake when I want something refreshing. I'm only going to eat cake when I want cake (which isn't often), and watermelon doesn't cut it in that case.6 -

Methinks you misunderstand what "IIFYM" really means.11 -
I roast the seeds off and sprinkle them with chilli. Lovely snack and great nutritional value but that packs a huge calorie hit.3

Something wrong with your maths - how can 100g be 2/3 of a cup if 50 gm is bit over a full cup??
Although it matters not to me as I cant stand water melon, tastes like soggy straw.
Sorry, all you water melon lovers.

For real. Watermelon fits my macros fo' sure.
I can eat it in embarrassing quantities, though.8 -

I particularly appreciate this thread today because I had watermelon for lunch and I'm going to have some of my husband's birthday cake later today. Watermelon AND cake in the same day, it can be done.
Here's the especially weird thing: Watermelon has some micronutrients that cake doesn't have and cake has some micronutrients that watermelon doesn't have. And they're both enjoyable, just in different ways. It's almost like it doesn't make sense to act like two different foods are somehow locked in a death match where one gets to stay in the diet and the other must be rejected forever . . .14 -

Yeah, I find that you can eat a lot of watermelon or other melon for not that many calories.
I don't really love watermelon, though (I know, I know, sorry!) -- I think it's okay, but there are so many fruits I like better. I always end up getting a number of small watermelons in my CSA box over the summer, though.0 -

Exactly. Weird how I almost never had cake the whole time I was flexible dieting/IIFYMing. (I don't like cake that much -- other than cheesecake, I guess -- other sweets are preferable to me, and I think of cake as like a birthday party kind of thing, not a regular treat. It also played almost no role in my diet when I was getting fat.)1
