What's the strangest diet you've heard/witnessed someone being on? (Not fad diets.)

Some people think that's weird. On the flip side, I used to take a full head of lettuce or whole tomatoes with me as play snacks when I was a kid and bought tomato juice instead of the more popular orange juice kids bought. Kids thought that was weird because their play snacks were usually pieces of fruit and I was the only one with vegetables.
I eat at least a pound (sometimes up to 5) of whole raw tomatoes a day.
My friend's son mixes chocolate chips into everything, even savory dishes.
I still eat whole tomatoes as if they were apples, especially in the summer.7 -

I was that weird kid who ate paper. Thankfully I outgrew it, but I would sit there doing my homework and could finish an entire sheet of notebook paper. I think I liked the way that it dissolved in my mouth? I'm not even sure, but I probably did that from the time that I was 5 or so until 10ish.2 -

this. knew a guy who hated tomatoes, and once when dining out with him and he ordered a sandwich, the restaurant forgot to leave off the tomatoes. he couldn't just take tomatoes off the sandwich, it had to be completely re-made since the juice had tainted everything else.
another interesting quirk i've witnessed: people who eat meals in sections; my ex would do this. basically if he ordered a burger and fries, he would eat the burger first and then work on the fries; if he had meat and sides, he'd eat all of one side first and then start on the meat, etc.. his sister did the same thing... i personally saw it as a very inefficient way of eating since one of those foods is going to be cold by the time you got to it! his perspective was that he wanted to enjoy the food in its purity without having other flavors in the mix?? whatever, he's a loser.
and to throw myself under the bus: i think that book "the starch solution" was modeled on how i ate as a child. i always ate pasta noodles plain without sauce, i always scraped off the toppings of my pizza (even the cheese) and would just eat the cooked crust, i ate burgers plain and dry with just the meat and bun. however this was all remedied by the time i got to college and now i'll eat everything. and that's probably why i'm here....

No, no, this is an EXTREMELY efficient way to eat! You eat the best, most delicious part of your meal, and you eat it at its ideal temperature and enjoy it to the fullest. Then, if you're still hungry, you nibble on the lesser items a bit.

haha, i'll stand corrected; could be an indirect tool for weight loss since after finishing all of your burger, you're too full to work on the fries. but then again, his sister eats the same way and is definitely... not thin but i do like my flavor breaks now and then.1 -
I hear good things about Apple Cider Vinegar...Every. Single. Week....on this site.18

My husband knew someone who did a beer diet. No food, just beer. That ended when at work his bowels released their contents as liquid down his legs.10

I had a co-worker who was unable to eat squid/calamari. She was afraid that the suction cups would get stuck to the inside of her throat and she wouldn't be able to swallow.

The "Cotton Ball" Diet. You're apparently suppose to soak up cotton balls in broth or soup then eat the cotton balls?! You'll feel more full and still get your "nutrition". Yeah..Pretty crazy.3

I once knew a woman who tried a diet that let her eat as much of anything she wanted for one hour a day. She could not eat at all the rest of the time.
Needless to say, she didn't last long on that one.
Dang, that's really weird why someone would think that works. The things people do just to lose weight is crazy.0 -

It's called one meal a day or OMAD. It's not for me, but it's just as much a real thing as keto.7 -

this is me. i have to use separate bowls for some foods so they don't get on my other foods. if a pea gets into my macaroni, i have to get a new plate. i also have to use a new fork if i get seconds.2 -

Well, this coulda been describing me. Lol
I have a serious hatred of pickles. I cant stand the taste or smell of them, and then the pickle juice always seeps into the bread. Its gross. I wont send back a sandwich over it, but I definitely don't enjoy it.
Also, I am definitely a person who can only eat one part of my meal at a time. I usually eat the thing I least like on the plate first, saving the favorite part for last. So if I have broccoli, mac & cheese and steak, I will eat the broccoli, then the steak, then the mac&cheese.
I am weird, I know. Lol. I just like to enjoy the flavors separately. There is only like 2-3 foods I will mix all together. Chipotle Burrito Bowl and Shepherds pie are all that come to mind at the moment.
When I was young, I use to eat either white bread with butter, or white bread with ketchup. Nothing else, not even toasted. Little weirdo.4 -
I'm just curious because I'm sure one of you have a friend or family member that has been on some off-the-wall diet plan or habits. I'm not talking about the typical fad diets (grapefruit, cookie, paleo, etc).
For example, this teenager once wouldn't eat lunch but was eating a hefty breakfast, such as tons of pancakes and syrup, butter, tots, and the whole bit lol.
Not a diet--but this one woman I knew was *LEGIT* grossed out from any vegetables because she had been eating crap her whole life.
What are some odd habits/diets you have seen?
Sorry if this is the wrong thread.
Not a 'diet' at all, or anything to do with weight loss, but I know of someone who won't eat anything white. No mayo, ranch dressing, white cheese, cauliflower. He can't explain why. It totally grosses him out.1 -
Water only for one week, while keeping training intensity the same
.... because apparently 'nothing else works'0 -
As far as potentially bizarre weight loss diet things go, my gym teacher in elementary school ate an entire stick of butter for lunch. Like a candy bar, just unwrap and chomp. It really grossed me out as a kid, and even now I get a little queasy thinking about it. She told us it was to help lose weight but back then, I didn't ask many more questions and I guess if she somehow managed to fit a stick of butter into her calories for the day...I don't remember her losing any weight though.4

gurl, gimme yo pickles, i will eat the *kitten* out of them, hahaha.
hey we're either weirdos or liars i can't eat scrambled eggs without ketchup--that was the only way my mom would get me to eat them when i was young, and as a 29-year-old, i still find regular scrambled eggs boring and bland. and i have tried it with salsa and/or hot sauce and it's just not the same...2 -

I once had a co-worker who would put sweet-n-low on everything. I am not exaggerating-- EVERYTHING. Ice cream, pot roast, green beans, sandwiches- literally everything. She carried hundreds of packs with her everywhere she went. So strange.
I don't like having my food touch. Mainly salty touching sweet like if my eggs touch fruits on my plate, I wont eat the egg part that's touching the fruit lol. But if my bacon eggs and sausage touch I'm fine with it. I'd never put my eggs near pancakes and syrup though! haha

I get you. I'll pick off tomatoes and eat the sandwich, but if pickle juice has sogged the bread? I'm out.
And I'll tell you straight up, the REAL reason I don't eat McDonald's is because you always ask for no onions, and then they put those f*ckers on there, anyway, and they're chopped up and mixed with the ketchup and stuck in the cheese, and you have to SCRAPE the whole thing off, and then you've got a dry sandwich except that you're still going to get a little bit of onion, guaranteed.
And this only happens in the drive-through. I'm pretty sure they do it on purpose "Ha! She'll discover those onions after she's already home and taken off her shoes and locked up the garage and there's NO WAY she's coming back!" I'll bet they take bets and everything.19 -
Some idiot family member of a teenage boy I used to to work with thought that because she did body wraps, that made her a fitness expert. The teen was a bit overweight and had serious self esteem issues, so with Moms encouragment he went to wrapper to get "help". After the wrap was done she put this 15 year old boy on a 500 calorie diet, and then told him to wear gloves at work (I was a dog groomer he was my bather) and when showering because the calories from soap and conditioner would soak into his skin and ruin his "diet". I was pretty furious about the fact that his family actually encouraged this *kitten*. Fortunately after he got good and sick a few days later, he realized that I was right and that was a stupid *kitten* thing to do to a teenager!2

I do this. It used to be because I wanted to end with a nice taste and not a nasty one (and I knew I had to eat my veg, which were almost always my least favorite so best to get it over with), but these days it's more habit than anything else.
I'll still eat pizza one component at a time if I'm not with company. If I am, then I eat like a normal person I eat toppings like mushrooms or sausage first, then the cheese, remove excess sauce (hate too much tomato sauce), then the crust that supported the toppings, and finally the nice airy crispy/chewy crust at the edge. That's the best part for me and the reason that I don't order breadsticks at pizza places. I am not good at moderating those at all.5 -
I've a few.
I eat nearly everything now but I went through a phase as a very young kid that I would only eat white/pale food!
Fish fingers (fish sticks) would have to be peeled of their breaded coating, and I'd only eat things like mash potato, custard, rice pudding, some plain cereals with milk and bread & butter. Although I was okay with ketchup and when my mum saw me mixing it into my mash potatoes one day she told me she'd make me special pink mash from now on (unbeknownst to me she was mashing carrots, cauliflower and other veg into it too) I think I soon grew out of it but I was a right pain in the *kitten* to feed healthily during that time!
I did have a friend who was super fussy even when she was 12 though, my parents drove us to France to stay at a friends and I brought her along and she wouldn't eat anything apart from bread as everything else had a "funny" taste to her even when my parents got the French versions of baked beans or sausages, (she didn't eat vegetables or fruit even in England and once when we had Sunday dinner back home she just wanted yorkshire puddings with ketchup, no veg, gravy, roasties, meat, stuffing or any trimmings) I think she ate nothing but brioche the entire week we were there.
Another time a friend at uni would eat nothing but cake and sweets everyday, I remember after a phone call with his Mum where she probably told him to make sure he ate right he boiled and ate an entire kilo of peas, the only vegetable he liked, then carried on as before as if that kilo of peas would set him right nutritionally the rest of the month. lol6 -
Not diet, but when I make spaghetti - I like to make everything seperate. My ex liked to mix the sauce with the noodles all in one pot. I cook the noodles and keep them seperate from the sauce and/or meatballs and then I dish it out one by one - first the noodles and then the sauce sitting on top. **Although, if someone makes it all in one I will still eat it because I was raised with 2 options for dinner 1. take it or 2. leave it!2

I myself, at the age of 14, had no food other than air-popped popcorn without any oil or salt and drank no liquid other than water or diet Dr Pepper for 3 months. I lost from about 220 to about 178 and then got pneumonia, when I lost another 5-10 lb. Upon recovery, I ate a 20" pizza to launch my 24 year stretch of gaining weight which only ended in 2000 after averaging 20 lb gained per year.
I still prefer air-popped popcorn, but now I spray it with olive oil and sprinkle it with salt.2 -

I dont think she was judging anyone in a bad or abnormal way. Its normal to notice a difference and form an opinioin on it. My husband ate chicken legs growing up, and my parents never gave me any sort of chicken that was on a bone, I dont like chicken that has a bone in it, because I didnt grow up with it. He thinks im weird for it, because he is used to it, and thats fine. I dont feel hes judging me, and I dont think PP was trying to be judgy14 -
I think this is the sort of thing the OP was asking for:
I have a friend who is so funny with her diet. Watching her order food is like "When Harry Met Sally"; everything is on the side and leave this off and add that. And her food must be HOT. Not spice - temperature. She doesn't care if she gets fries 15 minutes before her entrée - so long as they're PIPING HOT! Once they cool off a bit, she gives them away or throws them away. Soup needs to be near boiling. She won't eat beef or pork or turkey, including broths. Not a religious, allergy or dietary thing...just because - the only one she says she doesn't like the flavor of is turkey. She made some remark once about beef sitting so long in the digestive tract, but that doesn't explain why she stopped eating French Onion Soup, which she loved, when she realized it was made with beef broth. She'll eat chicken, but not on the bone, fillets only. She eats any type of seafood. She's picky about her vegetables too.
The woman seriously takes her own food to her own parents house for Thanksgiving and Christmas - or makes several dishes herself so she has something to eat. I'm sure her sitting down to a Subway chicken sandwich on Thanksgiving, rather than eat what the family eats (and what she ate growing up) makes her mom nuts.
She's well aware of how fussy she is and takes the ribbing with good humor. She makes a ton of work for servers and knows it - and tips very generously accordingly. She is the kind of person who remembers the name of every server and if they do well, tells the manager and asks for them again later. If they do poorly...she still tips, but she'll make sure she never gets them again.
She's also an amazing cook and routinely makes beef-based foods or snacks containing bacon, etc., for our office, which is hilarious because she won't touch them herself. She's won office cook-offs - without ever having taken a taste of the food she prepared. Makes some of the best beef pot roasts I've ever tasted - I've never seen anything like it.8 -
My BIL once did the Polo Mint diet! Yeah anytime he got hungry he would suck on a mint! ( obviously he had 3 proper meals a day, the idea was to stop snacking) It worked too until he got fed up eating them and the weight went back on1
