i dont understand why you would want to blend up lovely fruit and veg to drink it?
why not just have a bowl of fruit salad? a far nicer way of getting them in to your diet9 -
So far, the only negative post I have seen is from someone advising that the "cleanse" is needed. I have been to multiple nutritionist and Dr's for my overall health. Cleanses arent needed for our bodies! if you want to "cleanse", drink some water and your body will take it from there. Less calories in-more calories out. Eat right, exercise and your body will do the rest. If you want to poop for days, have possible dehydration, lose muscle mass and risk yourself having more work to eat right in the future.....Then give it a try! There is no magical solution...whether it be a "cleanse", pill, shake or whatever, they are out to make money and thats what they do. Even if it is to give recipes....they sold those books to give those recipes. Baby steps, not jump starts. Start with smaller portions, then incorporate more fruits and vegetables, walk, take the stairs instead of the elevator, park farther away from the entrance to the store....just take baby steps. If you "jump" into anything, make it your own mind to give yourself confidence and boost your spirits!6

If you really want to do it, it won't hurt you, but it won't "detox" or "cleanse" you -- that's not really a thing. It also won't make it so you magically will be able to effortlessly eat healthfully afterwards without thinking about it, or that you won't ever want to overeat or eat junk food. I think that's something people get sold as a benefit of these things. You also won't lose more weight (other than maybe water weight) than you would eating the same calories in some other way.
Bigger and more interesting question is about a cleanse as a way to "start eating healthy." I agree with those who say the way to start eating healthfully is to, well, start eating healthfully. Eating in a way that is not a way you won't keep up does nothing.
It DOES add in lots of vegetables and fruit, so the question is why not do that anyway? If you think that's hard to do outside of a only smoothies cleanse, that is something to consider. If you struggle to eat enough vegetables and enjoy a largely vegetable-based smoothie, adding one in to a normal diet (and seeing if you find it filling) might be a decent idea, but learning to incorporate vegetables in good amounts into one's normal diet is better and IMO important.
It also distorts the idea of what a healthy diet is, because of course there's more to that than just eating as exclusively fruit and veg as possible (and blending things up doesn't make them healthier). It is also important to get in adequate protein and healthy fats, and this is tough to do eating only smoothies. For 10 days, no biggie, but it's why it's not good at teaching what a healthy diet is.
It's also not sustainable, especially if super low cal, and it's important to figure out what a healthy and sustainable diet is for you, if this is to be a true lifestyle change.
So my thoughts. But 10 days, whatever, no harm if you really, really want to do it.8 -
You're looking for the easy way out and deep down inside we all know that mythical quick fix doesn't exist.
It's not a reboot, jump start or quick takeoff. It's just 10 more wasted days with a huge disappointment at the end when whatever weight comes off rushes back once you go off the plan.
You can do it if you want and when it fails to work, come back and re-read the advice here and get started actually accomplishing something lasting. At worst you'll be a few weeks behind where you could of been but maybe the experiment will help confirm in your mind what you really need to do.

OP, I am sure you have read a lot on the benefits of cleanses and juice diets. There is a lot out there! I always look at the source of the information. Most of the information is client testimonials, or studies conducted by the company/person/etc. selling or advertising the product or biased articles. These are not reliable sources of information. But, just a tidbit, even Cosmo says they are bullsh*t!

Yes, fruits and vegetables are a great way to eat healthy and can aid weight loss. But, eating only fruits and veggies or an extended period of time can be unhealthy as well.

If you like smoothies then use them as part of your calorie controlled intake.
Buy them pre made or make your own with a ninja blender or similar.
But as part of your intake, not your sole intake.
And yes, more fruits and veggies are a good idea for most of us ( within calorie allowance) whether eating them whole, mixed in meals or blended in smoothies.
But they don't have magical detoxing or cleansing properties and there is no point in a 10 day kick start thing.6 -
I think cleanses are stupid. This is coming from someone has done a cleanse - (my department at work several years ago thought it would be "fun" to all do a cleanse together... LOL. Worst thing I've ever done.)
Smoothies are great, they are yummy and healthy. But going on a diet of only green smoothies doesn't do anything magical for your weight loss and body. In fact I feel like you'd be missing out on other essential nutrients/macronutrients? And you're going to be very hungry. There's no reason to put yourself through that.
All it takes for weight loss is to eat fewer calories than you burn and mfp has that all figured out for you. It's actually a very simple concept. And it works.

Here are the main problems with just consuming green smoothies for 10 days:
- You will basically only be consuming carbohydrates, fiber and vitamins. You're missing out on two core macros: protein and fat! Your body needs protein and fat to keep your organs and muscles healthy.
- Because you're missing out on protein and fat, you probably will begin feeling unwell quickly.
- Most people will find that consuming only liquids leaves them feeling constantly hungry and irritable. Eating solid foods fills your stomach much better.
- You're not necessarily losing fat. You may lose some water weight, but that will come back when you return to your normal diet. You may lose some muscle from lack of protein and lack of calories (assuming your calorie goal will be lower during your cleanse).
- You're not building a sustainable habit. What happens when the cleanse is over? You will just revert back to your previous habits. So what's the point? To feel hungry and miss important macros for a week?

Here is the best "cleanse" you can do to get started on a healthy lifestyle: go through the refrigerator and cupboards and get rid of any foods that you have trouble controlling yourself around or are high calorie with minimal nutritional value. Then sit down and make out a meal plan for the week that includes high nutrition whole foods and prepare your grocery list. Refill the refrigerator and cupboards with the foods from that list. One week eating "healthier" foods can give you the inspiration to keep going. Over time, you can even re-introduce the high calorie-low nutrition foods as you learn how to incorporate them in reasonable amounts.
ETA: I started losing weight by doing exactly this. I didn't log or count calories at the beginning, I just made sure I was eating regular meals of nutritious food instead of grazing on whatever was in the house. A few weeks later, I started logging and counting calories. 60 lb down so far11 -

Cleanse a particular organ? ...With liquid veggies? No.
Detox your blood perhaps? ...With liquid fruits? Impossible.
Cleanse your intestines? Plausible theory... but that's simply a fiber and water issue which results in going to the bathroom. There are plenty of ways to do this. No need for liquid only diets or a super restrictive grocery list.5 -

Just wanted to add that you do not have to exercise, it's not a requirement to lose weight. It's good for your body, but you don't need it to lose weight. It can give you more calories to eat, but for pure weight loss it comes down to a calorie deficit by eating foods that fit into your calorie allowance.
I personally know several people who struggle with their weight because they "know" they need to exercise, yet they hate doing it so they don't even try anymore. I tell them it's not necessary for weight loss and it just goes over their heads.1 -

I tried a juice cleanse several years ago. I can say with authority that it didn't give my digestive system a break, it was actually quite unpleasant. And I was starving. I only lasted a few days (it was a 20-day program, I can't believe how ignorant about nutrition I used to be).

Yep, my son has Crohn's and had 22 inches of lower intestine removed (emergency surgery) when he was 13. They had him on a very specific liquid diet to, hopefully, allow his intestines to heal. Let me tell you that an actual replacement meal shake that includes all the necessary macros and micros is NOT cheap. PediaSure Peptide 1.5 at ~200 per case. He had to drink between 8-10 per day for 12 weeks. You can figure the math.
It worked but it's expensive and he hated the stuff by day 3.
Back on topic. I wouldn't do a "cleanse" myself for the above mentioned reasons. If I was trying to incorporate more fruits and veggies maybe. Not a fan of most fruits and veggies much but I've done some shakes here and there just to get more intake and mask the taste.
