Quitting pop.

Just know that it won't always be this hard... It will not only pass, but there will actually come a day when you just won't want it...
Also try waiting until the end of the week and having one with dinner on Friday... Then your not saying never, but later.
When I quit soda, I didn't tell myself I can never have one, rather that I might have one this Friday with dinner, or I might have one this Saturday at the BBQ, I don't know when I will have one again but I'm sure eventually I will. I'm just not going to have one right now, but who knows later, and that's okay if I do, because I've put it off for so long already...
I know this dinner, this BBQ isint my last chance to ever have a soda, there will be millions of other opportunities and it's not going to kill me to pass this one occasion...
Hope that helps...
For God sakes, don't go diet soda, learn to use your mind to beat it... No crutches9 -

I find this to be the most helpful, and I greatly appreciate it. I'm always in the mindset that I'm done for good and actually feel pretty disappointed about it. This is a great idea. I switch to unsweetened tea.. I keep repeating that.. I hate diet soda I don't like flavored water and I don't like sweetened tea. I think unsweetened tea is pretty good for you especially compared to my usual. I'm just suffering from poor self control. Every time that I try to quit I swear someone buys me a pop and I feel like I have to drink it because it's a nice gesture.1 -
Ultimately OP, you have to decide if the calories in pop will help you reach your weight loss or fitness goals. If the answer is pop won't help you meet those goals, then it has to go, but only you can make that happen.
I was a 3+ pop a day drinker myself up until a year ago. I just couldn't make the calories fit for my goals, so I kicked it to the curb. I drink sparkling water instead, and an occasional Coke Zero when I need something sweeter and bubbly.0 -

I also used green tea to help me quit too!
Also try telling yourself that you don't have poor self control (I bet there are plenty of other areas in your life where your self control is well demonstrated)... You just simply have been including soda in your daily habits and rituals and have replaced it with teas...2 -

I hate fake sugar and all those no calorie "waters", so it's good that you like unsweetened tea. I'd say you just gotta set your mind to no pop and make it happen!1

I just quit drinking sodas "cold turkey."
Was drinking 3-4 cans of cola a day PLUS 2-3 cans of beer a day. Totally stopped drinking colas and, although I still drink beer now and then, I no longer stock my frig w/it so that I can't just pop open a can at home.
This is the 2nd time around and I don't intend to relapse again this time. Just drink water, tea or coffee at home now when I get thirsty.

I can't drink diet pop. Something about the sweeteners just tears my stomach up.
I used to be the kind of person who'd drink 3 cans a day at least, and that was a bulk of my calories. I drink far less now, but I didn't cut it out. I buy those mini cans of dr pepper (90 calories) and just drink it occasionally. It's worked for me.1 -

This is how I've kicked a few of my unhealthy habits. I told myself I could still have whatever it was (usually an excessive number of cookies) just not right now. I still indulge occasionally, but it's not everyday anymore. In the past when I've tried to give them up forever my resolve never lasted long.

Why is "waters" in quotes? It's water...it's just bubbly...3 -
You can get non aspartame diet pop. I've gotten Zevia which is sweetened with stevia...all the flavours kind of taste the same but at least it's fizzy and sweet0
-
I used to love Mountain Dew. I stopped drinking soda and do not like it. I can taste the high fructose corn syrup. Try not drinking it for a month and you will see it is too sweet.1

Update! One week off pop and minimal cravings!9

Coke zero for life.3

Diet soda, soda stream and they have some low calories flavors. Water and lemon slices!0
-
I drink seltzer water. For me, the need for soda was the fizz. You could get a soda stream, get a generic mt dew and add only a little of the flavor?0
-
Could you mix diet and regular as a gateway to diet?0

I used ice tea and lemonade (arnold palmers) to wean myself off the caffeine and sugar. It will get easier with time, once its out of your system for a while you won't crave it as much. I agree with the other poster that reserving it for special occasions give you the mental break of knowing it isn't gone forever.0

This made me laugh out loud. My mom was so addicted to Diet Coke, she once went BLIND from withdrawals because the conference she was at had no vending machines and she forgot to bring her own, and this is exactly how she kicked soda. She likes the berry flavor.
(Her vision returned within 15 minutes after someone found her a soda to drink. She says it was a huge awakening to how bad of a problem she had with soda.)
Obviously, I inherited the Diet Coke addiction, but I largely kicked it by switching to straight tea (I live in Japan, so it's free everywhere) and black coffee for really rough mornings. I find the fizz/cooling sensation is what makes me like Coke so much--it definitely is relaxing!
I used to backslide constantly, but after 6 months of actively avoiding soda, I was able to have one occasionally with a meal and not completely fall off the bus.
(It also definitely helps when you have to pay $3.50-5.00 per soft drink and there are no free refills at restaurants.)3 -

I don't believe the vision thing.3 -
I'd like to know the biological mechanism that makes you blind in all caps from withdrawal of non-addictive substances.4

Mello Yellow Zero. The stuff is better than regular Mountain Dew ever was, lacking the metallic aftertaste that leads to compulsive over-drinking.

If you want my guess, she suffered from migraine headaches which were kept at bay by caffeine.4 -
Zevia is amazing! Zero calories and all natural. You can get it at Wholefoods or online.
I don't even care for soda, but it's helping me avoid cake and ice cream lol0 -
I went for a long time saying I wouldn't drink diet sodas, but then I started drinking them when I went on a diet. Now it is rare that I drink a regular soda because they are too sweet and they feel heavy after I drink them.1
