Joyce it just dawned on me how different your life is this year now that you and Charlie are so much healthier - it must be such a blessing to you to have the worries of that time behind you. I know it's a blessing to me to hear that you two are doing so well2

Machka – I agree on the tentacles or any seafood (or evidence of seafood like dirty dishes in the sink) left in the kitchen area. And I once worked with a gal who’d eat lunch at her desk (she’d fritter away her lunch hour shopping or doing things other than eating, hence chow on work time). She was a good one for eating salmon, tuna, herring or cooked broccoli – I love those foods in a proper dining area but she’d stink up the whole lobby with it.
Hehehe ,,, I actually do that. To be fair, most of the office do. We all eat at our desks (there's nowhere else to eat), and most of us spend our lunches running errands, walking etc.
But most of us make food that smells really good. In fact, I started going out for a walk or running errands between 1 and 2 pm because the place smelled so good and it was tempting to eat more than I should.
However, periodically someone will have a particularly authentic Asian dish ...

Lenora so sorry about your ankle, heal up quick!
Beth Are you heading to TN for your sons return to college soon?
Barbie I'll bet that wasn't easy to switch insurance agents, but a smart financial move.
Feeling rested and ready for the tumultuous week ahead--always a bit bumpy with DD off to school and me getting the school year restarted. I've been reflecting on new year goals (it's like Jan. 1 but better) and as always looking for my quote to guide me through and set a tone for my work. When I find it, I know I will share with all you supportive, wise women.

Saturday -- My husband and I travelled to the north of the state with the intention of starting ... and perhaps finishing ... a 400 km. We weren't sure if we'd complete the 400 because we haven't been well in recent weeks, and haven't done nearly enough cycling recently ... so we figured it might be a bit of a struggle.
Also, while this weekend presented us with sunshine during the day, it was not at all warm. Shortly after we started, my husband's thermometer read -1.8C and the high reached 12C for a little while. Tonight it is supposed to drop below freezing again with frost.
So, we started the 400 km, and covered the part of the route I really wanted to ride ... a section we've driven but have never ridden. And it is beautiful! The route twists and turns and climbs a little and has some flat sections, and presents riders with a lovely view of the Great Western Tiers which are topped with snow at this time of year.
All up, we covered 183.8 km and I really enjoyed the ride. I was so pleased to be able to do that distance, and had fun out there!
Also ... when we reached 157 km, my husband and I decided to go out for dinner to celebrate our anniversary (it's next week). Evil husband made the booking for 6 pm, which gave us an hour and a quarter to cover the last 27 km, a quarter hour to get ready and half an hour to get there. We made it! I can move briskly when there's Mexican food at stake.
To be fair to my husband, he did try to get a booking for later, but this place is popular and busy and 6 pm was the only time we could get in.
Distance 183.8 km
Elevation: 1256 metres

Did 45 min of Personal training with Jackie DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do The Firm Power yoga DVD then go to PA.
I'll probably go to Bev's Ceramics in Haymarket today. Vince saw something that he wanted.
drkatiebug - what a wonderful suggestion! Why should I do all the work ? And if she doesn't have an email address, I'll email them to Denise. But I really should email them to her. PLUS, that'll save me postage and time. Wonderful suggestion!
Sue - another thing to take in the car -- if you want to take something to drink, I usually take the small cans (something like 5oz) of the V-8. Or else they also sell those individual boxes of soy milk. Those don't have to be refrigerated. Yes, eating healthier has changed my taste buds. Now if I even smell something deep fried, my stomach turns. I won't even go into mentioning what it feels like if I eat something fried.
Katla - halitosis and bad hair for Amanda would be real nice. She works in a dentist office (she's probably something like a receptionist) so halitosis would be real funny. Especially if she doesn't realize that she has it. Good luck on your trip
Rye - remember someting to drink (see my note to Sue), dried fruit is quite sweet (those mini boxes of raisins?)
Lenora - I'm so sorry about your toe/foot
Lenora - I have held restraint mainly because I know the stress Denise is under and I don't want to add to it...right now. But after the honeymoon she'll be picking up her cat at Jess', she mentioned that she'd like my dress (was she just being nice?)..so I'll have it cleaned and give it to her. At that time I want to tell them how very much Maria hurt me. They don't need added stress right now. I'm also going to mention how she ran the reception, she ran the bridal shower, and she'll run the marriage...even if they don't see it. And should they have children, she'll run how the children are raised, too. But for now, I'll just vent here. Maria only has 2 sons, she never had a daughter. I wasn't raised in the South, I was raised in NJ, then we moved to PA. It's only been the last 10 years that I've been in the south. But you know what? Someone was at our house a while ago and I gave them some food, Vince mentioned how "you never leave this house empty-handed". She just said "you must have been raised in the South". Nope...that's just the way I was brought up. Never go anywhere emptyhanded.
My grlfriend called Jess yesterday. She's the godmother of Denise and she's the friend whose house I went to after school after my mother died. She told Jess that she won't be at the shower because her mother is real sick. She has altzheimers, has for a while. In June she got pneumonia and c-diff. I just found out that having altzheimer's she doesn't want to eat, the altzheimer's evidentally somehow blocks the message to the brain to be hungry. Really, carol said that it's day to day right now. She does plan to be at the wedding. she said she'd mail a check to Jess since denise isn't registered anywhere. I hadn't spoken to Carol in years. I do hope she is able to come to the wedding so we can get caught up. She was saying that Bob (her husband) is talking about moving to FL. I swear, everyone seems to be moving to FL. Used to be that when we went down there, we were alone. Now we have this one and that one to go see. Wish the state wasn't so big.
Heather - thanks so much for sharing your pics. Makes me feel like I'm there

Boy, sometimes it gets really hot here. I'm sure they have the thermometer turned down for when they're at work, so during the day it gets really hot, and the heat rises so the room upstairs that I usually stay in, well, heat rises. Last night I slept 1/2 the night on the couch downstairs. But afterwards I did go upstairs. Only they don't have a sheet on the bed, only a blanket. I wanted SOMETHING on me, but the blanket was way too much.
Oh well, I know she's just getting started.
So glad I brought some of those small applesauce cups. I put a few in the freezer.
Rey - forgot to mention the applesauce. That's something else that doesn't need refrigeration.

Good morning everyone. I am going to do nothing much today. Have a recipe for pico de gallo and might give that a try. Need to go fiddle with the weed-eater to see if I can fix it, else my nothing much will include a trip to Home Depot (which is next to Dairy Queen, Cracker Barrel, Red Robin, and Olive Garden). Grocery shopping-I have a 10$ coupon off 50$. My frig is full--thinking buy toilet paper and detergent. And, of course, go to Y and possibly sweep or rake or maybe just yank up some weeds. I have already had one deviled egg.2

Michele - I am sincerely hoping once the stress of the wedding is over Pete's mom will come back down to earth. If not, it's probably good she doesn't live in the same town as you do - no chance of running into her at the grocery store and being reminded of her micro-managing. Have you ever met her in person?
Katla - best wishes for safe travels! Hope you are able to avoid nasty traffic.
Heather - OH MY WORD - did anyone play that organ while you were there? I assume it's still in working order? Spectacular. Did you purchase any cheese to bring home? Thanks again for taking us along on your vacation. Hope you feel better as it comes to a close.
Carol - so glad your PT is working! My last day at PT is this coming Monday, and he's going to get me using surgical tubing/bands to do stretches and upper back exercises. It has definitely helped me.
Barbie - great you found insurance you'll like better. May I ask what company you switched to?
Lenora - OUCH - glad the swelling is going down and hope you didn't knock something loose. Are you keeping it iced and elevated? I've broken my little toes several times I'm sure and it's rough when you have things to do!
Ginger - your goal setting journal continues to impress me. Thanks for posting it again!
Joyce - I keep forgetting to mention how neat it is that Charlie loves the karaoke so much. So many of our guys "hole up" after retirement and don't want to get out in public anymore. I think it's good for their mental health! I know it's good for ours, lol.
Pip - good luck with the curtain lady! For her sake I hope she shows up on time and makes you extremely happy!
Last night on the radio they played a newsfeed from Feb 26, 1979 when there was a total eclipse in Portland. Evidently Portland had cloudy weather, but Goldendale WA east of there had clear skies. I guess the "totality" was truly something to behold - not only did it get dark, but the air got chilly as well. There were crowds back too. They mentioned a 9' tide on the coast but I didn't catch if it was back then or projected for this Monday.
That's the quick catch up. Have a great weekend!

Lanette - we bought a big wedge of that cheese to take back with us for lunch as we have nothing fresh in the house. Also bought some dark rye bread.
The organ did play for a little while, but they were getting ready for a concert a bit later.
Haarlem was lovely, but the old town square was completely obscured by a big stage and food tents, just like in Wismar. Luckily the band wasn't playing this time. We walked over a canal, lined with old houses and visited the church where the organ is. The columns of the church are painted in an unusual style of painting called "tapestry", which is exactly what it looks like.
Had a lovely lunch of beef carpaccio and salad in a very Dutch style café.
Then caught the bus back. We got the driver to drop us off nearer the ship as, in the morning, we walked for 45 minutes to the bus stop someone had told us about. :grumble: I was not happy. Grrrrrrrrrr!
Now our last evening. Got to pack up and put suitcases outside the door by 10 pm. Just keep hand luggage.

well today is the day. the awning is on, going to meet the lady at the dealership at 11am and u r right. for her sake I hope they fit and she's there on time. I might be a little late on purpose, I dunno...
my shifter on my bike is not working right so I am going to take it to the bike shop so it can be ready for the MS ride. I have my winter bike I can take in the meanwhile. Kirby said they may have the bike for a week
katla[/b I sent it the day that I posted I did.if you are away by the time you get it, oh well. I knew I wouldn't have all the signatures by the time of the ride anyway, so it will be a continual thing and I will have more for next year.
did I tell you Kirby bought a go pro?? he wants to record the ride for memories... he is tinkering with it now so he can get the bugs out so by the time the ride gets here, he will have it down pat. I'm excited. he has a chest strap and a helmet strap.
did I tell you that we joined the new gym? its the one in the old building where the old gym used to be, just new name. called fit republic. they are out of California, first one here in Washington. last day at the y is the end of the month. I will get to have a locker and it's 1mi away from home. Kirby and I will have a much shorter ride together in the morning. funny, we are going back where we started.

Michele personally I like the word NO! It sounds like this woman likes to have people jump through hoops for her. If she had given you more time that would be different. You could just say I don't have time to do this on such short notice. She'll repeat the pattern, so if you don't want to say no this time you will be ready for the next time. Daughter will need to learn this skill too. There is a reason fences make good neighbors. Clear boundaries.
Lenora some plants are more susceptible to bugs than others. Hibiscus is one of the worst. Keeping the plant healthy is the key. Right light, water, and feeding. Living up north I do bring plants I have outside inside over the winter. I spray them with a soap solution and then cover them in plastic for a couple of days. Since I started doing this I have fewer bug problems. You were smart to separate the infested one from the other plants.
Heather beautiful cool.
Lanette I remember that eclipse. I was working and we all went outside to see it. They say there can be a 10 degree drop in temperature because of it.

Well ... I took a "day off" from our posts and am soooooo behind again. I've read through pg. 39 and will try to do the rest while at work.
Marcelyn - love the pictures of the dive. One of our Y members is a dive master and he is in Roatan now on a dive.
Heather - you should write for a travel log/travel mag. I feel like I am on the adventure with you.
Allie - thinking of you. It sounds like you are getting good advice from attorney and are being very proactive. I told my DH he had the summer to show me his "changes". Right now I am working on me and what I want out of life. I plan to ask him for a 6 month separation to give me space. I don't plan on the separation making any difference in him (barring a miracle - which I do believe in - but know won't be happening with him) I cannot believe anyone is more clueless than DH as far as self awareness is concerned. He is bringing me down and I don't need that anymore.
Ginger - good to see you
Loving everyone's news, pics, etc.
The Eclipse is Coming, The Eclipse is Coming!!!!! 14,000 extra passengers at the Nashville Airport this weekend and about 1,000,000 tourists coming to the area. Yikes! I am staying put in my neighborhood, thank you very much!

I had big plans for the morning to run my 9 miles. My alarm went off at a quarter to 6 and I turned it off. Then at 6 the cat came in and started yowling. Guess she wanted me to run. So I got up and went out but called it quits at 3 miles. Just didn't have the energy for more. I have to up my game or I'm going to die in the marathon.... So 9 miles on Monday, rain or shine. Humidity might send me to the treadmill but I'll get it done one way or another.

Toe update. Still looks bad; missed my appointment but will be going in on Tuesday, after my weigh-in. Then entire little toe is purple with a knot at the first joint from the rest of the foot; bruised over the top of foot and up along the side. Numb and cold. Keeping it elevated. I don't think it is just jammed ... I think it is broken. Normally, the toe curls up under the toe beside it, now it is basically straight. Hurts to walk much on it; but, I've got to run into town to get a few things and try to get some orchid medium to repot them. Will be looking for some clear pots that are meant for orchids to be potted in. I think the afternoons are too hot out there for them sometimes.
Oh, and the freaking window panes apparently had not be 'ordered' as of Thursday. Was told that Jamey had to sign off on it. Windows World 'definitely' wants to make 'this customer' happy - or I will be sending out form letters to every BBB in each country south of Columbus, Macon, and Augusta. "They advertise their windows for life' and that, to me, includes proper installation. I specifically asked for the 2 that came out to look at why we are not happy and they agreed that Louis was correct, they should have used a 'higher quality' of wood to make the stops. So, they brought enough wood to do all of them 'inside & out'. They told us to paint 1/2 of them on one side; and, the other 1/2 on 3 sides. The 'white' paint will have the optical illusion of being part of the area that the windows sit it. Double paned glass, he broke the first one and stopped because he did not want to be 'in trouble' and said that if that one broke, it is possible that all the outside panes would break, because they had already put the caulking (clear) on them. They had not put the caulking on the inside because Louis was going to do that as he painted. They are going 'on vacation' the same day we're leaving for LA; so it won't get done this week. So after Labor Day I will start calling daily until they come with the 'new' glass. They should not have sent the first 3 Yahoos to do a job they apparently had no skills to do. In fact, they ripped down the raw pine on site; and butt-jointed them inside and out. Even missing one window. These people agreed with me, that they should have had the corners 'mitered' and that if they had been, we would not have been having the conversation. Much better quality of wood brought. Need to go wrap it up in the event if rains while we're gone. Right now, they are on our covered deck, far enough back that they don't get wet or any direct son.
Off to hobble through the grocery store. Wearing my CROCS to give it room.
Peace!

Glo, yes it is nice that we both are feeling fine this year. Charlie's health improved when his colon was removed. He has completely adapted to having to poop in a bag, he cares for it by himself. We have not traveled since then except the 3 hour drive to see the grands. So we don't know what it would be like to stop at rest stops and empty the bag in a rest stop. With his Parkinson's, he has no sense of smell so he has no idea how much it stinks. I have never said anything to him, don't have the heart. I know they do make charcoal tablets to use to keep down the smell.
Charlie sometimes drives up to 40 miles to sing. They sing at weddings, VFW, summer picnics, pretty much anywhere. They also like the free food they get at these places. They also have a couple of retirement/nursing homes that they go to.
Heather, that organ is wonderful. Wouldn't you just love to hear Mozart himself playing it. Someday they will bra less to make a hologram of that. Safe journey to going back home. We can't wait for your next vacation!
I am staying here at home for the eclipse. I may go across the street to the school parking lot. My niece was going to go to the 'ground zero' we have around here, Hopkinsville, Ky but she has decided to stop at a smaller town that won't have the totality but pretty much so. She has this idea that she will just stop along the side of the road and stay the entire 3 hours or so that takes you from beginning to end. I think she is delusional. But I wish her good luck. I asked her on Facebook messager when they are coming up and she said they have been here since Thursday! They have no intention to come over and see our new landscaping or meet my kitty. Alrighty then!

josephine - I keep my shopping list on my phone and just get what's needed. It just frustrates me when I get home from the store and then find something that we need. Well, I just put it on the shopping list for the next time I get to the store.
Lynette - I've only met Pete's mother once (that was enough!). That was at Denise's graduation probably about 5 years ago. At the time there was talk about his father going to see his friend in Asheville. I offered he could stay at our house since we're 1-1/2 hours east of Asheville. He never took me up on it. Who knows? Maybe he never went to see his friend, maybe he flew, I don't know. I only know that I made the invitation. His mother never said something like "since you don't see your daughter much, you can stay at our house any time you want". Would we have taken her up on it? Probably not. But it doesn't matter since the offer was never made. all the times I've driven up there, she never once offered that I could stay at her house. I've told Denise many times that I need to stay at Jess' since I don't have any place to stay. I'm sure she's mentioned to Maria why I'm staying at Jess', but she never invites me. Well...probably for the best anyway. Thru this whole wedding/shower ordeal she's only messaged me once on Facebook to tell me that she got favors and we'll give out two favors. I've messaged her not to buy the favors, that I would take care of them. I've messaged her not to buy a placq that I wanted to surprise Denise with it. Maybe that's why she suddenly wants to make this collage, to compete with me. It makes sense that during a full eclipse it would get chilly, I never thought of that.
Margaret - do you think Maria asked me for the pictures? No, she asked Denise to ask me. Just like when she wanted to add two more people to the shower and Jess said "no, the invitations are already written out". She had Denise call Jess to put the people on the list.
lenora - if you don't get any satisfaction, keep after the BBB. I did that and FINALLY got close to what I ordered.

Hi ladies. I had a nice long post for all of you yesterday then the computers went down and we were unable to get anything done at work. No internet, no local computer drives, no printers or copies, which are networked. So I just went home. Well I stopped by a bead store and picked up a piece of jewelry I had repaired and went crazy thinking of all the fun things I could do with mom's old jewelry!
Katla: you put mayonnaise on the kid's hair at night and put a shower cap over all their hair. Make sure their fingernails are cut short. The "anti-mayo" people claim that as the mayo goes bad, their heads itch and if they scratch a lot the bad mayo gives them a skin infection. In the morning wash well and rinse with vinegar.
The mayo suffocates the live lice. You have to repeat in a couple of days, twice. Do it again on day 3 and on day 7. That way anything that hatched after the treatment will be killed too. You still have to pick the nits the normal way. But let me tell you this works like a charm! Resistant Russian lice were no match for American mayo LOL.
We didn't have to worry about scratching, our kids were so malnourished they actually did not have fingernails and even today have very soft ones that don't really grow.
Take care, Meg...hoping for good eclipse weather!1 -
Just checking in to say Good Night! Anyone have advice on how to cook for one? I like my cooking but the boy doesn't always and nothing I make comes out for the one meal. I wanted to make pico de gallo but not 5 cups for eating all in one day. I also have a salsa recipe for a quart. What will happen if I don't remove the pepper skins? I will attempt a half recipe of pico tomorrow morning.0

Happy Saturday. This is my weekend to work so here today 6am till 6:30. Town is filling up for the eclipse. I am shocked at what hotels are charging for just Sunday night. I am off Monday, DGD is driving from Colorado back to college in Iowa. She is planning to stop for lunch. I do not like the idea of her driving during the eclipse. Praying and know God will take care of her.
Heather-- Thanks for sharing all these pictures of your trip. Looks like you and DH are having a grand time.
Dorrie-- Hugs!
Toni--Hugs! Glad you are taking care of you first.
Pip-- They look really nice. Glad that it is all done and now you can just enjoy.
Well ladies time to get some work done. We have gotten several calls today wanting to know if we are selling eclipse glasses. Not sure why they would call the hospital for them. But then I am surprised at some of the things people call the hospital and think we have or will give them.
Blessings, Vicki Grand Island, NE5 -
Boo, Denise just told me that "it's OK" when I asked her if she was going to have her wedding favor bags for me to do. I was hoping to use that as my excuse why I can't get to the pictures. Does she feel that "it's OK" because Maria doesn't want to go to the house? I don't know.
pip - those curtains look great! Worth waiting for. What a great home-away-from-home you have there
josephine - why don't you cook the normal amount, then freeze individual portions? That's what I do. This way you won't have to do a lot of cooking. Not sure what will happen if you don't remove the pepper skins. I've never made salsa
