What nobody tells you about losing weight

I know what you mean. I'd lost 25 pounds but none of it from my face. But when I lost the next five people started noticing I'd been losing weight because that's when it came off my face. At the 50 pounds lost mark I'm still waiting for the love handles to go....13 -

how I forget sometimes until someone comments.... like my ortho surgeon the other day says "are you intentionally losing weight, if so you look great" I had not seen him in quite a while... so there's that.16

I know what you mean. I'd lost 25 pounds but none of it from my face. But when I lost the next five people started noticing I'd been losing weight because that's when it came off my face. At the 50 pounds lost mark I'm still waiting for the love handles to go....

That you will skip over an entire size of clothing in your closet in a month-the wrong month, inevitably.
Also, (eventually) being able to share clothes with my daughter-she has invaded my closet enough-time to return the favor.11 -

That it takes your brain a long time to catch up with your body and you'll still see yourself as fat even when others are commenting on how "tiny" you now are.
That some people will be shocked when you tell them that no you're not finished losing yet.
That constantly buying new clothes will get expensive (I was in a UK 14 for less than a month)
That your feet will shrink, seriously I've gone down over a shoe size.
That there are people that think their magic diet is better than yours, seriously no, I don't need to go low carb, I'm the one that's lost 140lb, I think I know how to lose the weight and low carb is not for me.35 -
That once I've figured out how to lose weight, people who drink "diet water" and "anti-cellulite powders" and advise that "not eating for 7 days is incredibly good for your health" are incredibly frustrating to me and infuriating at times.
That on some days I feel exactly how I looked before I started, and my brain categorically refuses to put things into perspective, regardless of what I know.23 -

Nobody told me about the tricky dynamic around whether or not and how to offer support/guidance/advice to people who talk about being too fat like it's something they might want to change. You know? There are a bunch of people where I work who never knew me heavy and they'll be like "oh, I'm too fat, but you wouldn't know what that's like" and the question becomes...what do you say to that? I usually come right out and tell the whole story, lol, but I'm not sure how that goes over. Like, if I'm like, 'so here's how you get less fat' they're sometimes offended that I just called them fat...
Oh and then I get all b**chy and irritated when they just keep saying how fat they are and do nothing about it. "It's Haaarrrrd!" and I'm like, "Yeah. And?" Seriously. Do the work or decide not to, your choice. (sorry, I'm in a mood, lol)
Also the losing weight from the wrong places. Also the cold all the time. Also dropping my phone through my thigh gap. Also the "too skinny" comments. (I handle this one by offering to send BMI check-ins on request. I do have an (ancient) history of eating disorder, so it's probably not a super bad idea to have people to whom I'm accountable to stay realistic.) Also the painful bones on the floor during yoga.
Oh, yoga is way easier with less flesh to maneuver around. And also way more satisfying since I've been lifting on and off so my muscles are stronger.20 -

Nobody told me I'd still be shopping for clothes that would fit the old me. I still can't look at a smaller pair of jeans and think "they'll fit perfect". Still looking at bigger stuff and not believing smaller stuff will fit.16

This!!!!!!!! My answer: I eat what I want in moderation, calorie in calorie out... theirs: no really how? Tablets online?? Drugs? Shakes? Arghhhhhhh

All of a sudden people think that you can do anything AND that they can tell you how to work out. Yes I am healthier but I still have bad knees. I lost weight swimming, doing Aqua Zumba, water aerobics, and walking. But my brother in law thinks I should be running by now and makes fun of me when I don't.
Like seriously makes fun of me. Him: So how's that walking going for you? Breaking a sweat? What kind of music do you listen to? (makes mocking walking motions). Me: um...it's going just fine. Look at me. Also, how long can you hold your breath? And can you swim a mile without stopping?31 -

Looking back, I sometimes get upset at myself at how incredibly simple it really is (hard to start changes, but simple in design). Eat less calories, move more. And, it's cheaper!!! I am no longer buying a good $150/month in junk (Doritos, Pringles, snack cakes, sodas).
This is why when I am not believed I end up reverting to the most insane "diet" I can think of, because that's what they'll believe and want to hear. So far I've used "Krispy Kreme", "Nutella and waffles", "Hershey/pizza", "Hot sauce & Twinkies" diets. Yeah.13 -

I have three ways of handling people like this:
1) Treat them like the stupendously stupid people they are and just ignore them as they aren't worth wasting breath on;
2) Treat them like the stupendously stupid people they are and throw it right back at them, along the lines of "do you actually do any exercise?"
3) Treat them like the stupendously stupid people they are and tell them where to get off.
One of these responses usually works. My preference is 2) as that makes them squirm like crazy as well as making them look like the stupendously stupid person s/he is. Especially in front of others.

Lose skin. Yeah. Well there's only a few things you can do about it.
1. Time, there's no magical skin tightening oil
2. Stay well hydrated. Hydrated skin heals faster and better.
3. Surgery. Sometimes there just isn't a natural way to get skin tighter.
The ask yourself a very important question: Which would you rather have? An unhealthy body with no lose skin, or a healthy body with lose skin? I know for me, I much prefer healthy.16 -

I've lost 90 pounds. I have a lot of loose skin.
You know what? I'd much rather have the loose skin.
When you lose the weight you need, if you're going to get loose skin, you're going to get loose skin. Age and genetics have a lot to do with it. The most important thing will be your attitude.
The other important thing to remember will be that there will be some tightening over time, so the results you see when you first lose won't be your final product.
That is, if you even have loose skin in the first place.31 -
Nobody told me how many people are actually anti weight loss surgery and believe that you must have been a complete and utter pig and ate like the people on my 600 pound life in order to get to over 300 pounds.
Nobody told me people were going to call you a liar when you told them that when you started gaining weight you were exercising daily and eating 1400 calories a day.
Nobody told me that people would say insulin resistance, polycystic ovarian syndrome, stress, and extreme dehydration and not eating enough would not cause weight gain of 120 pounds from November to June.
Nobody told me that people would try shoving their opinions down my throat, or saying that I must have been doing something wrong before if lowering my calories by 200 a day and changing my exercise routine started working suddenly, even though the calories changed over a period of 4 months, not suddenly, and my medicine was upped by 1000 mg a day.
Nobody told me that someone would tell me my decision to have surgery to put my pcos into permanent remission and to help me reach my goal, not as a quick fix but as a tool, was going against science and is completely wrong.
Nobody told me that people would tell me my way of measuring food was wrong, as it had worked for a total of 6 years, during which I lost and kept off a total of 140 pounds.
Nobody told me that one person could make you go from feeling so proud of yourself to the biggest failure in the matter of seconds for their degrading behavior towards you.

I did at one point. Now I'm trying to lose the120 again plus a little extra to put me at a healthy weight. I'm in the process of qualifying for the weight loss surgery now. So far I've lost 14.8 of the 120 pounds I gained back on my own.12 -
Not only does the weight lose journey make you smaller, but it makes you more determined, strong, passionate, accountable, inspiring to others, educated, proud, persistent, the list goes on! Love my journey so far24

I just started really eating healthy and exercising 2 weeks ago. My experience of 5 years ago where I lost 30 lbs reminded me of all the posts and feelings folks put on here. What I remember and I will experience again-
People noticing and commenting in a nice way how fit I look. (it got embarrassing)
Constant clothes issues, some jeans I could put in the dryer to get them to shrink a bit before I bought a smaller size.
Waiting a VERY long time (weeks) before I saw the scale move.
Being tired, hitting the gym at 5:30 am and then hauling to work full time. The gym became a habit, then it became my 'outlet' and I actually thought of myself as an 'athlete'..
SOUP- lots of veggie packed soup.
I lost 30 lbs then and I actually looked too thin- for my height and age. So I backed off and here I am again!
Yes, I am ready to do this again but maybe not 30 lbs- so worth it! I was fit, healthy, and in the best shape of my life. Now I'm a few years older, slower and natural body changes will be more challenging.
It ain't rocket science- don't eat crap and eat half of what you normally would and exercise twice as much as you want to.
You can't work out a crap diet..6 -
I know people have already mentioned being treated differently, but I finally experienced it firsthand.
I got blatantly hit on by a couple of guys tonight, just going to the gas station. Sure, it was a bit creepy. But they were seriously attractive. In good shape, clean looking, and around my age. I think one of them was younger than me! It's just weird, I'm not used to it at all.
I was so surprised and just...caught off guard. I smiled and laughed (not meanly) and just got in the car without saying anything. When I got home I took a look in the mirror and just realized, I'm looking different. I've heard some people feel resentment but honestly I feel none. I'm a pretty confident person though and someone being in shape shows character.
My family is supportive, but my mom and sister worry I'm not eating enough the farther I come on this journey. They don't fuss though, thankfully! I'm excited for when I lose even more21 -
How much more room you have in your closet - all your clothes are smaller now, so take less room ^^8
