I survived! I'm pretty happy with my time, 38:36 for a first 5K when I've only been running since the end of May. I was expecting to be somewhere in the 40-45 minute range so it was a nice surprise. I didn't manage to run the whole thing because I started off waaaaay too fast. I ran until I got to the signs for the turnaround, then walked through that, and run/walked my way to the finish line with a fair bit more running than walking. So overall I'm very happy with how it went and have some ideas for how I will do things next time.

Well done that's a fantastic time.

@sarahthes Congrats! it's very satisfying to have an unpexected new PR.

@fitoverfortymom Luckyly is a week before the race, you should take those days easy and it doesn't impact your performance as Moby as Vicent have pointed, only a well rested body can achieve its full potential.

For your runs before the training you could try to work towards improving or maintaining your mileage or your condition, listen to your body, think about your fitness goals and your schedules to find the kind of runs you feel comfortable doing.

Only 66 kms left I think I'll complete the challenge next monday.

    8/21: 3.2 miles

163.2 miles of 250 goal miles

Slept in past the first loop of my group run, so only joined for the second 3 mile loop which was THRONES TO GO! Got lots of Game of Thrones talk in after last night's super long episode. Theories and frustrations abound!

Back to the gym tonight instead of at-home workouts like last week. Instead of driving over I'll run there and back (1.3 miles each way) to make up some of the distance I missed this morning.

    Upcoming Races:
    Oct 8: Steamtown Marathon
    Oct 22: Perfect 10 (10 Miler)
Nov 5: Princeton Half Marathon (pacer)

Congrats, and nice bling too. And now you've run one 5k, you've got a time to beat for your next one.

Yeah, and don't worry about setting off too fast. We've all been there, and if I'm honest, I can still get caught up in the moment and have to rein myself in.

@JessicaMcB Sorry that a GI issue hit you.
The news/sports/weather reports indicate that the conditions were close to perfect. But I noticed that quite a few of the runners I know had a big pace drop in the last 7.2 km. Was there a change of weather - short windstorm/rain/humidex bump?

A screen shot of the results of 3 runners from our little club.
    3c0xzj7vhhoo.png
Runners from our neighboring community that I know.
    5ncxcvgne8dw.png

No run yesterday, called out for work Saturday evening so a longgg day and then remembered that with the Edm marathon and local Tri-Athlon there would be no one out for a run. Went and cheered the local Tri Athletes.

@Elise4270 Yeah the only time I can run and fit in work and family time is by going to bed at the same time as my six-year old, lol. Works well enough until I get up so early that I start to feel drowsy at work in the afternoon; fortunately my new employer has provided nap rooms (I kid you not!) so one day I may just take advantage of that if it's a slow day.

But yeah, definitely safety first with pepper spray if you're going to be running when few people are around.

@garygse I have been trying to convince my employer to build a nap room for YEARS. I am so jealous of you right now. Alas, I work for the government. I fear my requests for a nap room and margarita machine will continue to go unanswered....

@amymoreorless I also work for government. No naps, margarita machines or 3 day work weeks for me. LOL!!! Great job on the race!!!

8/1 - Rest/sick day - feeling better, but not sure running would have been good. Hoping for tomorrow.
8/2 - 4.5 miles of hill repeats. Glad I did it, more glad I'm done.
8/3 - 3.5 short miles before getting in the car with the family.
    8/4 - Road trip / vacation
    8/5 - Road trip / vacation / anniversary
    8/6 - 5 miles. Gorgeous morning for a run!
    8/7 - 5 miles. Again, beautiful morning!
    8/8 - 5 miles. Another nice morning!
8/9 - 4.6 miles of hill repeats with group. I am soooo tired and sleepy today.
    8/10 - 4.4 treadmill miles / trek class. Then upper body weights/abs.
8/11 - Rest day because I have to.
8/12 - 6.6 mile group run. Perfect weather.
8/13 - 2.3 treadmill miles. Then quick upper body weights.
    8/14 - 5.3 miles track / intervals.
8/15 - 5 miles. Another relatively cool, delightful morning to run.
8/16 - 4.85 miles of group hill run. Rough, but good.

    8/20 - Unplanned rest day.
    8/21 - 5 miles of treadmill "intervals"...ugh

@juliet3455 no the conditions were immaculate honestly and the second half was pretty flat (there was a section in the first half I gave the side eye to because it seemed out of place but whatever, I ran it fine). There were so few portapotties at Edmonton though if any of them were having the same trouble I was they likely lost time trying to figure out how the hell to not have an accident OR go on somebodys' lawn lol.

I saw Chelsey in the elevator at the Marriott the day before but I didn't want to come off like a total creeper given the locale/that I had three kids hanging off me :D . I looked for Ken but didn't recognize him anywhere- I must've been too far back in the corral. Congrats to your group- male runners just killing it haha

I was running a half marathon a few years ago and the course followed a wooded bike path down by the river. There was a couple of girls in their 20's I was running with and one said she needed to go the restroom as soon as she came to one. About 45 seconds later she darted off into the trees and down the river bank a few feet. When nature calls you gotta answer sooner or later. I've been fortunate that i've always been able to keep things together in races but there has been more than once i was thankful for a porta-pot during a training run

Didn't get to post my weekend miles. Ran 8 miles on Saturday. Woohoo!!! But my feet were killing me by the end. And then I went and mowed my parents' yard with a push mower. I didn't do my cross training yesterday. I switched my rest day and will cross train after work today.

I've been putting off shoe shopping for a while. Friday I went to the local running store and they analyzed my gait and my feet. Pronator. High arches. I tried on some lovely Brooks running shoes, but had to decline. $160 is not in this girl's budget. Sigh. I tried on about a hundred pairs of shoes on Saturday afternoon/evening. Finally found a pair, Asics again, and am wearing them to the office today to help break them in. They get a running test tomorrow and a 5K race on the 26th!

Busy weekend of cycling. Yesterday's 40 miles was the fastest I've ever ridden... average was 19 mph but it was a lot of 22. I thought today's run would be terrible, but I surprised myself and it was great! I should be able to get the last 20 in before the 1st!

All the schools in my area are letting students leave at noon because of the eclipse. And teachers. So yay! Going home now!

@mobycarp - sorry about your ankle. Hope you don't have much longer off it.
@anitamistry1 - congrats on your first 5K! Don't worry about the time. It will get faster each time!

@wandavaughn if you found a pair of Brooks you like see if you can find them on the net cheaper. Skip wore the same shoes for 2 years and loved them, they changed them and she hated them, but I was able to find the first ones she liked online for like $50 so I brought a couple pair. Usually the color goes out of style the following year.

I need advice on my hydration pack. It's stuck closed. The zipper part won't budge.

I email the manufacturer and the point of purchase. Figure I'm missing something. It's gotten harder and harder to pull off.

    I'm a dweeb

I am planning a 5 mile run after the eclipse about 4 my time
    Monday 8/21 95 minute swim 2 miles 140 laps
    88.99/100 mile for the month
