Wondering if anyone likes savory oats and has any great recipes to try.
Looking to shake up my breakfast routine.
Thanks!

I love them, but don't really do a recipe. I mix in some chopped and sauteed veg (broccoli or asparagus or zucchini), maybe some sauteed mushrooms, a still runny sunny side up egg, and some feta cheese.1
-
I like to mix in shaved parmesan, romano, or other hard Italian cheese and a poached or fried egg, plus salt and pepper. Or just butter and/or olive oil, salt and pepper if I'm keeping it simple.1
-
I usually make mine by stirring in peanut butter/PB2 and salsa.1

Heh, I'm the same... I'm not that big a fan of oats, and can't really get my head around making them savoury. But I eat some other pretty odd stuff, so eh1 -
I wish I hadn't opened this thread until after breakfast...2

Savory oats are the best!! I do them Asian style with soy sauce, sriracha, an egg on top, and scallions. For everyone who's squeamish: come on, they're just another grain.4

I do the exact same and just switch up the base occasionally i.e. sub quinoa or rice or amaranth. I just adore it.
Also, any tasty leftovers in your fridge? Steak or chicken and cooked veggies, then you've got what you need to make savoury oats. I love leftover stews or curries on my oats too. My mom does cottage cheese and scrambled eggs in hers.
Seconding the 'they're just another grain'. A simple start for you to dress up as you please.0 -
My go to for a while was oatmeal with an over easy egg, topped with scallions and sriracha.0

This sounds... okay. There rest, though...... I dunno you guys.0 -
I make mine by sauteing peppers and onions, then toasting the oats. I then add in beef broth slowly, risotto style, making sure its absorbed before I add more. Its really a tasty side dish.2

Try pottage......it's pretty medieval

Peanut butter and salsa? If you are serious then I will try it. Although I might use almond butter instead.0 -

I've done it with almond butter and cashew butter and enjoyed it too. If you've ever had a spicy peanut sauce with noodles or a stir-fry, it's the same concept!0 -

I sell sheep yogurt and cheese at farmer's markets and one of my customers mentioned he likes to use the yogurt for savory curry oats. I tried his recipe and loved it. So I thought, why not try more? Granted, the curry does add a little bit of a natural sweetness.
Always try something new, right?1 -

Dude! Totes makes sense. Now I see it (and can imagine how GREAT that would taste!). Thanks!0 -
Steel cut oats topped with parm and a poached egg (sometimes some crumbled bacon) is the go-to weekend breakfast at my house.1

That sounds yum.
And agreed, I think of them as a grain. If you'd do savory grits in the morning, why not savory oats? If a stirfry with rice or quinoa or barley, why not something similar with oats?2 -

That sounds great, I'll have to experiment.1 -

What's so odd about a savory grain dish? Do you eat rice, pasta, barley, quinoa, couscous, etc., in savory dishes?0 -
Has anyone ever eaten the oats cold before? Does it still taste alright? I could possibly bring this for lunch at work, but I'd likely have to eat it cold.
Also, any have pictures to share to show what their creations look like?0 -
Not exactly savory, but not sweet. Old fashioned oats made with almond milk and fresh squeezed lemon juice and fresh grated ginger. Yummy1

Hope those links work! I love cold overnight oats!0 -
A relatively low cal breakfast would be one serving of PB2 mixed with a bowl of plain oats and maybe a sprinkle of brown sugar on top would be about 200 calories0
-
I like my oats both ways! One of my favorite ways is sautéing peppers, onions, and garlic and topping my oatmeal with it, along with black beans, corn, and salsa! For other ideas, just think of toppings you might use on a baked potato!0

How about haggis?

I use oats in my meatloaf. I adore 1/2 cup of oats, 1 cup boiling water....1tbsp butter....fry the oatmeal in a patty after adding seasonings of your choice, make a dippy egg.....mash it all up...YUM!!!0
