Not a bad month. I'm in a funky mood. I corrected someone yester that "I use to be a runner". I am no longer. But honestly, I know I've made leaps and bounds this month- improvement isn't over.
I've found that I do better mentally if I look at it as follows:
Random person: So, you're a runner?
Me: I'm a Once and Future Runner.
Some say you're still a runner, even when you're injured. When I'm really low mentally, I think I'll never run again. But the balanced attitude is, I will come back. I was once a runner, and I will be again in the future. With appreciation to T.H. White for the phrasing, I am a Once and Future Runner.5 -

Real Goal: Return to regular running
Today's notes – This morning, I thought it should be a rest day. But my leg felt fine later on, and the weather was gorgeous, so I went out to run instead of taking a long walk to get my goal steps in. Yeah, it should have been a rest day. Just didn't have it in the leg, but I recognized that and quit before I did serious damage to myself. Hence, the ridiculously short run today.
I don't like having to stop short of 2 miles. Emotionally, that feels like failure. But I did some stretching on the walk back home after I quit running, and did more complete stretching after I got home. I was rewarded with a calf that recovered enough to walk briskly a bit later. I see progress in how quickly I recover, even though I don't see as much progress as I'd like in how far and how long I can run. I think I also see a total lack of comprehension on the faces of non-runners when I tell them I can't even run 2 miles.
As predicted, my mileage for the entire month of October adds up to the equivalent of one decent long run. Close the book on Spook Month, bring on November!

I'm ending October in a high note with the kind of 6 mile run I wanted to get in yesterday to bring my total to 79.2. I didn't have a goal since I joined in the middle of the month but almost 80 miles isn't too shabby, especially since I had many more rest days than planned (17). Trying to decide what my November goal should be. I don't plan on taking nearly as many rest days and am going to up my weekly mileage a little bit, but I won't have a marathon thrown in there. Probably will shoot for 70.
I finally had a really great run tonight. I was planning on just doing 3-4 miles at a comfortable pace, hoping that would be right around a 10 min mile. When I was almost back to my car and was still holding myself back from going too fast, I decided I definitely could get in at least 2 more at that pace. I ended with a 9:45 pace and no walking2 -
Felt good enough after my 13 miler yesterday that I attended my triathlon team's speedwork/interval run session tonight. Got in a bit over 5 miles of running, including some 0.25-0.65 mile intervals at a 5:30-6:10 pace. Came home a bit sore, but no pain/specific muscle group annoyances, so I'll call it a win. Glad to finally get in a speedwork session after 3 weeks of no fast running following Chicago, just as I'm about to cut back my distance this week with my Ironman taper in effect. Planning 5 easy miles tomorrow, 2 solid days of rest, then a race pace 3 miler Friday before Saturday's IM marathon.

End of the month....didn't feel that bad after working all night....so ran on the treadmill after weight lifting session.
10/1....12 miles.
10/4....3 miles.
10/7....1.62 miles treadmill. Total..16.62 miles
10/8....13.1 (Indianapolis Half Marathon....average pace 11:58
10/9...Colts game...beer and a large pretzel....mistake...lots of swelling in left ankle.
10/10...work
10/11...6 miles run, mixing up fast sprints, easy run, fartleks...felt good but unable to muster a fast pace or increase heart rate much above 90% max heart rate. The half marathon took a lot out of me.
10/16...8 miles at very, very slow pace...averaged 73% max heart rate.
10/19....8 miles at very, very slow pace.....unable to share heart rate due to heart rate monitor malfunctioning, but I ran almost 13 minutes slower than 10/16
10/21...3.79 miles at 79% max heart rate on the treadmill, no elevation, probably averaged 13:20-minute miles.
10/22....8 miles at 76% max heart rate on the Monon trail. Temperature at 59 degrees slight head wind. Worked at maintaining slow pace, focused on breathing and relaxing...not as tense as last time, started getting sore at end of mile 7.
New runs posted:
10/25....8 miles at 77% max heart rate....still working on my base....super tedious. When will it end???
10/26...8 miles at 79% max heart rate....allowed 30-40 sec sprints x 7, one each mile except 1. I felt much better after running the sprints...8 miles didn't seem as long.
10/27... 8 miles at tempo run at 88% max heart rate....1st mile at 10:03, still unable to crack the 10 minute mile...very consistent at running all miles under 12 minutes, and a couple under 11 minutes (using old fashioned stop watch). No appreciable fatigue noted...could have run another 2 or 3 miles. Noted glute muscles tightening at about the middle of the fifth mile, no hip soreness....yay!
10/31.....3.96 miles on the treadmill, rolling hills with 1 minute sprints per half mile intervals....averaged 83% max heart rate.
Total... 91.47 miles
Goal... 75 miles.
5/6/17....Indianapolis Mini-marathon.
So close to 100 miles....didn't know that I was that close.

@_nikkiwolf_ Congratulations on finishing so well on your first Marathon. I loved your recap....I felt like I was there with you, What a super job keeping an even pace throughout despite developing blisters toward the end of it! Awesome victory picture!0
-
@_nikkiwolf_ Congrats on the Full! I enjoyed reading your race report and thanks for sharing the experience!
@RespectTheKitty congrats on the 8.2-mile run.
Just want to quickly report that I think I ran 90 miles this month, 15 pass goal.
Ran 3.1 miles on Saturday with group. As in most Saturdays, I ran with my 7-year-old DD and she finished in 40 minutes. Not her best time but definitely better than her recent effort
Yesterday, I ran 8 miles with my DH. It was harder to keep an easy pace running with him, so, ended up finishing almost 10 minutes faster than my run of similar distance on a much flatter route 2 weeks ago. The surprise was that I didn't feel more tired afterwards. Probably have something to do with not having increase my weekly mileage for some unplanned reason.
Will try to catch up with the rest of the posts and see you in the November thread.1 -
@MobyCarp I understand exactly how you feel about the " Short Run". I had 3 of them in October while re-habbing a gimpy calf.0

In case anyone is wondering where we went for November....

@MNLittleFinn To be honest, all you need is miles and more miles. At this point, I would not even worry about tempo runs. Yasson 800's are anaerobic and really won't help you in a first time marathon. If you want to add in faster running, I would start with bursts or strides and fartleks. Once you get your weekly mileage build up near peak, then maybe add 1 day per week of tempo runs. If you got hills on your marathon, running some hills once a week will do you better than any anaerobic type of workout. That's about all you need. Anything else you do will zap your energy that could be used in building more mileage or building your aerobic base.
If could go back and redo my marathon training which was nearly all easy miles (with MP finishes towards the end of training) the number one thing I would change is to add hill work. I would recommend that whether your course has hills or is flat. My course was super flat and by mile 21, my quads started to ache and were soon on fire. I think hill work to build up quad strength would have really helped me in that regard.
Another thing I wish I had worked more on is firing up my glutes to get them to take on more of load. I've really be conscious of that late in the last 2 or 3 months and can really tell a difference now, particularly for going up hills. By using glutes more your quads don't get as trashed.

Thanks @HonuNui !
Another great month in the books! Weather you did 1 mile or 191.55, Congratulations everyone!
May November bring recovery, new found strength, training wisdom, and happy eats to all!4 -
@_nikkiwolf_ congrats! I have not read your race report yet, but I have bookmarked it and WILL read every work when I have the time to enjoy it.
I'm 3 pages behind from not keeping up over the weekend. I'll get caught up soon.
I finished last week off with an awesome 9.1 mile run in a cool, misty rain. I had intended on running it on trails but the trail I had planned is shared with horses and there were a LOT of horses so I did us both a favor and ran the paved trail instead.
By the time I got there I didn't have time to run the 10 to 12 I planned so I did some impromptu speed work. Starting with a slow mile to warm up I ran each mile a bit faster until just past the halfway point then each mile got a bit slower. Splits were:
10:23
9:47
9:42 (this is where I decided to start the speedwork)
9:08
8:35
8:14
9:01
9:35
10:11
Kody is currently tapering for this weekend. No race, but we have a 4-day pheasant hunting trip in South Dakota planned and he needs to rest up for it. I think I'll take him out for 4 miles tonight and maybe 2 miles Thursday. We hunt Saturday through Tuesday and when we get back he will be tired and very sore, but very content. Pheasant hunting is, by far, the best time of year for him. Me too actually.
The following weekend I see my daughter at the University of Kansas. Sunday morning we're running a 5K together then Sunday afternoon I'm running a tough 10.5 mile trail outside of KC. It's the same loop as the 20 mile race I'm planning in February.
Upcoming Races & Events
11/13/2016 - KU Vets Day 5K - Lawrence, KS
11/25/2016 - Black Friday Run - Minneapolis, MN
12/03/2016 - Donut Day 25K <- 25k run with stops at 5 donut shops along the way
01/28/2017 - Securian Winter Half Marathon - St. Paul, MN
02/25/2017 - PsychoWyCo Run Toto Run 20 Mile Trail Race - Kansas City, KS
04/29/2017 - Chippewa 50K Trail Race - New Auburn, WI2 -
I just realized that October is over! Time to turn the calendar to the next page.
I finished October with just 66.2 miles but I think I made my goal of recovering from calf & Achilles issues. Looking forward to a significant jump in mileage this month.
Some awesome mileage totals this month!
@shanaber, Hobbes looks great!

@7lenny7 Great that you are completely recovered now! Sounds like you have some really nice plans for the next weekends. Did Kody get the taper crazies yet?
@shanaber Lol, Hobbes looks awesome
I just looked back at the October 2014 running challenge. In that one, I made it to 37km by the end of that month (of a 50km goal). Can't believe that was only two years ago! All you guys here are awesome, without all the motivation, I probably wouldn't have gotten addicted to running and spent all my money on horribly colorful shoes. Thanks a lot, see you all in the November thread!

@_nikkiwolf_ you've made AMAZING progress over the last 2 years! Congrats, that's awesome!1
