I used a scale at my moms house. It works as far as I know.. I know I didn't eat amazingly but I stayed within my calorie limits (always under the goal, avg of around 1300 calories) and even started drinking water daily. I used to never drink anything really (I was and still am highly dehydrated) and just started so I assumed itd flush extra weight off?
You're still dehydrated, that's why
But why would that make me gain weight?? Am I drinking too much water?
No, your body is retaining water because you're still not drinking enough.
But I feel like Ive been drinking a ton ): I already had 20 oz today
You said yourself you're still dehydrated...
Yes but I feel like Im doing better. I dont see why id be gaining weight
Because you're still dehydrated...
That doesnt explain why im gaining weight
Yes it does. You're still retaining water because you are dehydrated. No matter how many times you say you don't think that can be true, it is.
You are a very condescending person. That helps no one.. Something that might be obvious to you isn't to everyone else. And sometimes I repeat things and it comes off as not listening, but I am autistic and have a hard time putting information together. Please stop being so mean to me in my posts.
There's nothing mean about any of my posts on this thread.
Yes. There is. Youre very condescending and sarcastic. Id like to ask you to please not talk to me, thanks15 -

Just because someone tells you something you don't want to hear doesn't mean that they're condescending and sarcastic.
How would you like it to be explained to you? Because you certainly seem to not be grasping "Your body needs water, you didn't give it water, and now it's holding on to everything for dear life."19 -

Some people can handle the information given to them on the scale, they understand that water weight can fluctuate with things like time of the month, sodium intake, new workouts, carb intake, and taking in extra water if they are chronically dehydrated, they can see the number go up and go down and know that this happens through the day normally, even when they use the same variables and situations, like first thing in the morning at 8am with no clothes on, after going pee. They can take this information and use it constructively to understand their bodies and how things work and know its not a reflection of their actual progress because weight loss and gain happens over a period of time with excessive/reasonable calories in or out above and below maintenance.
And what I'm enjoying from the irony in all this is that water weight freaks me out. I hate hate hate it. I try to mitigate it at all costs. I've spent way too much time crying to my therapist and to my dietitian about it.
So in the OP's first post here about being chronically dehydrated, I told her this would happen. So that she would know what to expect.
Apparently that makes me toxic and negative.

Maybe it would help to put a link to your previous thread so new readers would understand about your issues with getting enough fluids. Otherwise people are going to be offering advice without knowing your situation.
It's not surprising that you've gained weight - water is heavy, and 1 gallon weighs 8 pounds. Your body previously needed water. Now it is getting what it needs, and it's going to take time - maybe several weeks - for it to adjust to the new equilibrium. It might be a good idea not to weigh yourself during this time as it won't give you any meaningful information about how much fat you have gained or lost. Don't worry, you are not gaining fat while eating 1300 calories a day. When everything settles down, you will probably weigh a little more than when you started, because your body will be healthy and properly hydrated, but you will not have gained any fat, and your weight loss will start trending downwards on the scale then.
Normally water weight can vary by several pounds during the course of one day. I gain and lose about six or seven pounds of water a day. That is normal and nothing to do with fat loss and calories. Don't let it upset you, your diet is still working the way it should.
How are your headaches and other symptoms of being dehydrated? Do you feel any better?9 -

OP, would it be easier if someone attached a visual? I don't have any, but I have worked with autistic kids, and it seemed to be one of the preferred ways to retain information. How do you learn best?

OP. Original.post was much more.of this.....people.would give her advice and she'd come up with excuses so eventually she was questioned as to whether she was for real or trolling....you'll get nowhere fast because she doesn't want to listen.
I never gave excuses. I said my actual medical problems and I took the advice to drink more. In case you didnt read my diary. I do listen. I even downloaded the plant app someone suggested. I listen to everyone that does not talk down to me. Those who do, get ignored. In case you didnt notice, my questions are comprehension based or confusion related. Not "not listening". Sitting there repeating "because youre dehydrated...." "You just said youre dehydrated..." "Youre dehydrated.." Does that answer why id be gaining weight? No. Ive asked you and him to stay off my posts multiple times now. I havent had to ask anyone else that before. If you have a problem with me, ignore me and stay off my posts. Dont attack me and talk down to me. Bye.9 -

I can't think of a simple way to know when your body has adjusted to the new normal, but I would give it at least two weeks, maybe as much as a month. You have been restricting fluids for years, so it may take a little time.
I'm happy to hear your headaches are better! Hopefully they will stay gone now that you're drinking more.
To explain why you being dehydrated means you are gaining weight now - picture a sponge. A dry sponge weighs less than a wet sponge. Your body was like a dry sponge, now it's like a wet sponge. But the sponge itself is still the same, it's just holding more water.
You mentioned having heard that drinking water flushes fluid out, which is true - but only after a certain point. Picture the wet sponge having something heavy on the surface of it, like mud. To wash the mud away you run water over it. Eventually you will have a clean wet sponge, which weighs less because the mud is gone.
But if you start with a dry sponge with mud on it, and run water over it, first the sponge will fill up with water before the mud starts to wash away, and when you finish, you will have a clean wet sponge - which is heavier than the dirty dry sponge because the water is heavier than the mud was.
Does that make sense?

This is the internet, and you cannot truly discern the tone behind written words on here. I am Autistic and I do not see anyone being rude or condescending to you. I just see people trying to give you the best information they can, repeatedly, and quite honestly, showing a lot of patience. I am not trying to be mean, but after decades on internet forums, I have learnt that you cannot assume that someone is being mean because their responses might be short and to the point...that is just the way Tavistock posts, and I can assure you, she has been a most supportive and kind friend to me for years.
I can understand the situation of feeling people might be talking down to you and I know that many of us on the spectrum hate, hate, hate not knowing things and having to ask, but what is being said is the truth.
You became very dehydrated. Your body is finally getting more water and because you drank so little, for so long, your body is holding onto what you give it because it thinks you will deprive it of what it needs again.
I can promise you that if you continue to drink adequate amounts, it will all balance out and your body will start letting go of that water and the scale will start dropping again. Just... ignore the scale for now. You are so much more than a number on the scale (as I am trying to get myself to believe)
And please, don't take heart at what you might see as negative posts. Everyone has a different style of communicating and I have learnt it is better to pause and re-read and think before assuming someone is belittling you or being mean. I know it is hard, believe me, I know. I used to have full blown meltdowns over some of the responses to threads I made in the past...but just take the information that you find useful, and ignore the rest.21 -
OP here are some possible answers gathered from what was already stated. Hopefully you don't find them attacking. I don't feel that was anyone's attention. When given advice here, most people take it and apply it and come out successful. It might not always be easy to hear, but trust me they are trying to help.
1. You used a different scale. No 2 scales give the same weight unless they are identical and calibrated the same. I have 2 of the same model scale in my home and they are still off by 3 lbs.
2. You said you were dehydrated. Water adds weight. You added water to your body, therefore you are heavier.
3. You weighed yourself dressed and later in the day. Clothes and shoes adds weight. Food and water in your body adds weight. Your body naturally retains water as the day goes on and retains weight.
Just a suggestion, if changes on the scale bother you, avoid weighing often. Go by how your clothes fit.
Sorry you find the forums hostile, but for the most part we are pretty decent and knowledgeable people10 -
Sarrellynn, to explain more about dehydration: Water is used throughout your body. About three quarters of it is inside the cells of your body. Half of what is left surrounds the cells in your body, and about 10% of the total water inside your body is in your blood. The rest is helping you with digestion, etc. The right amount of water is needed to balance all of the processes that let you live. If you don't get enough water, your body uses what it has for the most important processes. It tells your kidneys to stop producing urine. It pulls water from cells that are not absolutely critical for life and makes it goes to where it is most needed. When you start drinking more water, your body sends it to all the parts that were having to make due with less water than they need. It takes a while for the hormone that tells your kidneys to start making more urine once you are getting enough water. So part of that scale weight gain is because you are replacing water that your body needs to live, and part of it may be that your kidneys have not yet gotten the "all clear" message yet. There are other processes inside the body besides dehydration that cause the body to hold on to water, too. Some foods require a lot of water to digest properly. Some hormones (cortisol, for one, which is related to stress, and can be activated by illness, lack of sleep, emotional worries; hormones related to menstrual cycle are some others) can tell the body to hold on to water, too. Hope this helps you understand some of the responses you got.4
-
basic easy way to understand or at least I hope so. when you are dehydrated your body will hold on to any water you take in until your body gets enough to hydrate you. so your weight will go up. its water retention. when your body is properly hydrated then your weight will eventually reflect that on the scale by going down. so some of the water you take in will be used for vital organs and what not,the rest you will pee out and you should see a difference in the color of your urine.
also weighing with clothes on and later in the day for most will show on the scale as weight going up because you added mass(clothes, shoes and food in your body as well as water retention). if you can weigh first thing in the morning after you use the bathroom in your underwear or naked to get a more accurate number.

I put on twelve pounds in twelve days of eating restaurant food on the road. I've lost 11 of those pounds in the 11 days I've been back home. In my case, it's sodium. Eating salty meals on the road caused me to retain 12 extra pounds of water which I promptly shed when I got home.
We all do this. The weight on the scale is only a snapshot of how much one weighs. It goes up and down depending on what you are wearing, what time of day it is, what you last ate, how much water you've drunk, whether your bowel is full, etc. It changes from scale to scale. Some scales vary depending on how you lean on them. Some vary because the floor underneath is springy.
For women, hormones make a big difference. Lots of women put on several pounds of water weight and then lose it each month. Exercise or injury both result in increased water retention while tissues heal.
This is all completely normal and unavavoidable. You can minimize variations by weighing on the same scale at the same time of day but your weight will still go up and down. If you chart your weight using the MFP report function, you'll see that over time it looks like an uneven ball bouncing slowly and eratically down uneven steps. This is normal.7 -

I used to have full blown meltdowns over some of the responses to threads I made in the past...but just take the information that you find useful, and ignore the rest.
Just because you are autistic doesnt mean that what they said wasnt rude. The way I read and process things is different from another person who is autistic. I want them to leave me alone. Ive asked them before to please leave me alone. Ive reread it 10 times and its still very rude.14 -

This is normal.
Thank you! Its good to know that it happens to a lot of people! At least its not a fat gain.4 -
CharlieBeansmomTracey wrote: »basic easy way to understand or at least I hope so. when you are dehydrated your body will hold on to any water you take in until your body gets enough to hydrate you. so your weight will go up. its water retention. when your body is properly hydrated then your weight will eventually reflect that on the scale by going down. so some of the water you take in will be used for vital organs and what not,the rest you will pee out and you should see a difference in the color of your urine.
also weighing with clothes on and later in the day for most will show on the scale as weight going up because you added mass(clothes, shoes and food in your body as well as water retention). if you can weigh first thing in the morning after you use the bathroom in your underwear or naked to get a more accurate number.
Yeah, the rehydration is really important, but weighing in shoes and later in the day is certainly contributing several pounds as well. In some ways, your body is a big sack. You put food and drink in a sack then put it on a scale, it’s gonna be heavier than if the sack was empty. I weighed myself last night wearing clothes and was up three pounds over my morning weight. Clothes have weight. That waste sitting in my intestines waiting for tomorrow AM’s restroom visit has weight. That’s why people recommend weighing under the same conditions whenever possible, and first thing in the AM without clothes is about as consistent as it gets.
As a side note, I only weighed myself last night because I wanted to weigh my cat and weighed myself so I could subtract my weight from the weight of me holding him. Because he’s not standing on a scale by himself, ffs.7 -

Do you feel any better?
I cant because someone had my thread deleted for a reason I still dont understand. I havent had a headache this week yet. So I shouldnt worry about my weight until after Im hydrated 100%? How will I know when I am?
Thats probably the best explanation ive read , thank you very much. So if I keep hydrating, I might gain weight, but it wont be fat, and then I can start looking at my weight?

I used a scale at my moms house. It works as far as I know.. I know I didn't eat amazingly but I stayed within my calorie limits (always under the goal, avg of around 1300 calories) and even started drinking water daily. I used to never drink anything really (I was and still am highly dehydrated) and just started so I assumed itd flush extra weight off?
You're still dehydrated, that's why
But why would that make me gain weight?? Am I drinking too much water?
No, your body is retaining water because you're still not drinking enough.
But I feel like Ive been drinking a ton ): I already had 20 oz today
I've already had 133.8 oz today since about 3 hours ago and I will probably end up drinking at least 80oz more.
If you lose weight it shouldn't get replaced with water, under normal circumstances. I lost 50 pounds, give or take, from August to the end of September and another 20+ pounds this month and I've been drinking water like a camel.
If water replaced fat I'd be sloshing around like a water balloon right now.4
