Hey, you, gym newbie! Yeah, you...we know you're a little nervous doing this. It's OK.
But you can stop worrying that any of us are really thinking about your weight because in our heads while we're there we're thinking...

I think as long as you stay consistent for a couple weeks, ppl will start acknowledging you and will be friendly. When I was 280-something, I was doing squats one morning. This ripped dude whose physique I admired walked over and complimented my form (shocked the hell outta me). Two of the biggest meatheads that went the same timeframe in the morning as me (and trained together) offered to work out with me numerous times and told me to let them know whenever I was ready. To the noobs: I wouldn't be intimated; the in-shape ppl know you're in there trying to improve your body just like they were when they started out (everyone was once a noob). I personally feel like I have a TON of work left to do myself, but now I'm starting to get compliments more and more frequently so I must be doing something right.37

I'm very self conscious at crossfit because I'm probably the most out of shape and I'm probably the oldest. Halfway through the WOD all I'm thinking is "do not go into the light ... do not go into the light" lol29

I'm still a newbie at the gym, so my primary thought is on myself, my form and "am I doing this right". And then, half way through my second set, my thoughts are all "get this *kitten* moving ONE MORE TIME"...2

When I first started, I was so nervous! I'm not a social person and I was so worried! But, what I've found is that, if you're pushing hard enough and concentrating on you, those other people will vanish and you won't even care. If you're not at that point, you need to focus more on why you're there and what you're trying to do. Headphones help a lot to zone other noises out and the music can be very motivating, too. That being said, I still try to be friendly and always greet the regulars that I see on the mornings I go in9

If I'm doing cardio, I am just hoping that the clock starts moving faster. I mean, I've been on this thing for 20 minutes, right!? Nope, just 5 minutes. *dies a little inside*
On a more serious note, I'm usually so focused on myself that I don't even notice other people unless they're being very loud and talking on their phone (which my gym has a rule against, but doesn't enforce) or if they keep dropping weights and banging equipment around, which I just find distracting. I understand that it happens sometimes and I'm okay with that, but some of the people are my gym literally do it for attention.10 -

Once I'm into a run on the treadmill, with my earbuds in, I'm the only one there. Yeah, I get the vague impression that there might be other people around, but I'm in my zone, focused on what I'm doing, and I don't "see" them.12 -

lol I was in the squat rack once and in the rack next time mine was this gorgeous bikini model. So yeah I had the same though "just dont fart, just dont fart). Anyway i was squatting quite heavy (for me) and as I came up on my last rep it ripped. No not a soft little fart, it was like a thunderstorm. People actually stopped and looked around so I racked the weight and looked around as well shaking my head and looking all disgusted lol
I got out of there pretty quickly after that.42 -

I'm thinking - do not run off this treadmill, do not trip off the elliptical, and for the love of all things holy why do I constantly forget my weight lifting gloves. These calluses on my hands are not sexy....
I seriously do not give anyone a second thought while I'm in the gym. I'm there for me. Whether you are in amazing shape or just starting....I DO NOT CARE! lol3 -

But when I do see someone who looks new to fitness or wellness, I think, "Way to go! Don't feel bad or embarrassed, because You. Are. Doing. Something!!!"2 -

When I see a new gym-goer or someone overweight I think "Good for them! I was there too. Should I say something? I hope they stick with it."11 -
Is the pool empty today, I really don’t want to share a lap lane.
Seriously even though everyone’s in swimsuits in the pool I don’t think I even notice them other as bodies who might be in my lane.2 -

The only time I will notice you is if you were on the stair master long... "dang it, got to wait" but I would then go and find something else. Usually I would get distracted with some other machine and forget entirely.1

If you're doing something foolish, such as cheating badly during a set or using poor range of motion, then I might take notice. Ditto for people who chat for long periods during a workout class. That's true regardless of whether the person is overweight or trim.
When I see someone who's overweight but clearly putting a lot of gumption into one's workout, I will tend to notice that as well. I'll be silently nodding in approval.8 -

“G*dd*mn earbuds! If you keep popping out of my ear while I try to lift I’m going to lose my mind, I swear to gawd.”

We’ve all been the newbie at one point in time and have felt scared, insecure and self conscious. I’m too busy trying to perfect my imperfectly perfect form but I’ve learned that most people are helpful. If you are following a program and carry it around with you, good for you. It will keep you on track.2 -
I'm usually thinking one of two things, 1. Who's on my deadlift platform/squat rack/bench? or 2. What moron didn't unrack my deadlift platform/squat rack/bench.
