I wonder how to get to that point rather than feeling like I'm wandering around aimlessly.

secret tip: find a programme ;) i completely understand how you feel, but that could be the best advice mark rippetoe gave in a book completely stuffed with good advice for people just starting out. there's no super-competence to it at all.

Don't want to derail this thread, but if anyone has good trainer/plan suggestions, I'm all ears. Can PM me.
I've been sort of following the booty one that is always recommended for women (can't recall the name offhand because I'm old and senile) at home but would love some arm, back and shoulder ones for the gym.

    TIA

Usually I am looking at some of the really fit people doing something and thinking I wish I could do that. Or I am counting. Always counting.
Also I couldn't crunch today because I was holding a fart in. I wondered if my pt could somehow secretly tell that was why.

I don't pay attention to other people at the gym. I'm focused on my workout, trying to get that last rep. I'm usually in the zone.

I am usually thinking, something along the lines of....."15 more minutes and I can have X for dessert later". Or I am making lists in my head of to dos, grocery lists, meal plans, etc. My head is the most clear when I am working out, so that is usually when I do my best thinking/remembering.

I don't pay much attention to others at the gym. Exceptions are if I see someone there all the time and they are killing it. I love to see peoples progress! I also will sometimes look at other girls and wonder where they got their gym outfit. And I will sometimes watch the personal trainers so that I can get ideas!

All I could think about this morning is "I hope no one else can hear my fat belly flapping".

God, I hate that noise. But it's more loose skin now, so it flaps worse than when I was fatter.

I was worried when I started about 6 months ago but now it just never crosses my mind. Here are the main things I thought about at gym.

    1. Keep tight and drive with hips.
    2. Straight bar path
    3. Bend the bar
    4. *kitten* this hook grip hurts
    5. Chest up push the floor away

Oh and breath, vision will come back after a few seconds nothing to worry about after pull 435 for singles. Not sure why I get tunnel vision on singles but weights keep going up.

Sure I notice people but they don't bother me and I don't bother them. Wish more places were like my gym honestly.

Thanks to some current health issues, I'm usually thinking...

"Don't pee don't pee. Hold it in. Clench tight. Why do I have to pee so bad? I just went! DO NOT PEE! Oooh look how much weight that woman is lifting, can't wait until I look that badass omg please don't pee."

Will be so happy to get in to see a specialist so I can go back to admiring my form as I lift, and watching other ladies do impressive things that make me super jealous. (Women only gym)

If I'm doing cardio, I am just hoping that the clock starts moving faster. I mean, I've been on this thing for 20 minutes, right!? Nope, just 5 minutes. *dies a little inside*

On a more serious note, I'm usually so focused on myself that I don't even notice other people unless they're being very loud and talking on their phone (which my gym has a rule against, but doesn't enforce) or if they keep dropping weights and banging equipment around, which I just find distracting. I understand that it happens sometimes and I'm okay with that, but some of the people are my gym literally do it for attention.

Yep there is this one guy at my gym who has to go around as if he is actually doing anything positive. Puts to light of weight on the machine and commences to to do reps like he is about to take off. Not slamming the weights but clack clack clack all the while making these weird sounds like he is lifting something much heavier. He goes from one side of the gym to the other using equipment doing the same thing. I swear he either goes to the gym alot or he knows when i will be there.

I’m usually thinking two things.... damn that girl is hot! And why do these mirrors mess with me!?

    Finally. Some honesty!

No. Not the only honesty. Some people actually are kind, friendly, generous. And some of us are truly self-centered narcissists, not thinking about you at all.

    Absolutely!! :)

I actually couldn't describe anyone that may have been in the gym the last time I went (about 10 days ago) ... except for my husband (but I've seen him since then. ).

I couldn't pick them out of a lineup. I couldn't provide any more detailed description than ... I think there were some males and some females, and most of them had dark hair.

The only person I notice at the gym really is the older guy who's schedule seems to mesh with mine. I notice him because he wanders around the trx area without paying attention, and routinely steps behind me (and everyone else) when I'm doing back lunges or pulling weights on the trx. I've smacked into him a few times and I'm afraid I'm going to knock him down :( Other than that, I couldn't tell you who was there or what they were doing.

    "Where is my glasses strap?"
"Maybe this time I can hold the outside handles on the elliptical instead of the inside ones. No just kidding, don't fall off!"
"Can I pull up my pants without stopping and without falling off?"
    "Your core!"
"Why didn't I get the sport cap water bottle, why do I keep doing this to myself?"
"What is that smell?! Is it pizza Monday?? Noooooo! Bestrongbestrongbestrongbestrongbestrong."

I remember my mom told ne about the time she ran into a fellow lap swimmer at the grocery store and said "Sorry I didn't recognize you with your clothes on!"
I went out with a group of friends for one of my female friend's 40th birthday. She really wanted to go to the local "Go-go club", where people dance in bikinis. While we were inside one of the dancers with very long hair came over and sat on my lap and started talking to our group. She acted like she knew me, but I didn't recognize her. She chatted for a couple minutes, said it was nice seeing me and went on with her night.
A few days later when I was at the pool swimming laps, another regular said "it was nice seeing you outside the pool". Turns out we swam at the same time about 3 times a week, but I had never seen her with her hair down/not in a swim cap.

    I'm thinking...
    - my God, I hope I don't do something to embarrass myself
    - I wish I had proper lifting shoes, I sure hope noone is looking at my shoes
    - damn I love these tights... I hope everyone notices the tights
    - is my form right?
    - I wish I could video this set to check my form, but I'm too shy
    - does anyone else think this is "heavy"? It sure "FEELS" heavy

but now that I have cancelled my gym membership (significant financial constraints)... I'm thinking...
    - damn, I need to change the cat litter
    - I sure wish I had two 45s
    - I need more mirrors
    - damn, I love these tights
    - oh crap, is that mouse poop in the corner?
    - ERMAGERD IT'S A SPIDER!

The only thing I'm thinking about is time. How much time is left. Why does time seem to be going backwards. When is it over with.
But, when I am finished, I feel good and I want to do it again tomorrow.

Seeing someone at my gym who is notably overweight inspires me to work harder. I think, “Look how they’re challenging themselves! Why aren’t you? Get your lazy kitten in gear, you lazy person!”
