Welcome Terina! I live near Astoria, so hello fellow Oregonian!
OK you do have your hands full with 4 kids still at home! I am 55, a retired Navy Chiefs wife, married 33 years, have 3 sons. One is stationed in Washington state at a squadron. Another is in transition, having done his 4 years in the Navy, married, and is going to have the Navy pay for his electrical college, when he does start. Wife is starting first, also out of the Navy, studying to be a nurse. My youngest has just entered the Nuclear Navy, so he will be in the next 2 years.
I have recommitted myself, (just without the straight jacket), to losing 50 lbs this year. I am presently 244.8 lbs. Oh to get into Onederland again!
Nice to meet you!

Happy New Year Peeps!
Welcome new gals!!! This is the place to be at the start of a New Year. I joined on Dec 24th, 2016 and it's been life-changing for me.
Wendy - wow, thank you for that review of Longo's research. I copied and pasted it onto a word doc and will review the detail later today.
Over the past week, I've been working on a review of 2017 and some ideas for 2018 which I will now post here- some are quantifiable goals, others are areas I want to work on and will be researching. Here goes:
2017 year in review- highlights
- Lost 6 lbs during 2017 – I am able to fit into my clothes again & some are too loose. I am now at the higher end of BMI which is fine.
- I attribute the loss to strength training started May 20, been doing it faithfully 3 times a week since. Weight and inches lost was despite not being able to kick sugar and eating a lot of sweet and processed food in November and December. But I have added avocados to my diet, almost daily. Maybe that helped make a difference?
- Blood tests are in the normal range.
- Quit drinking alcohol. Tired of the "beer belly"
- Managed to go off blood pressure pills – tho it’s creeping back up again and I’ll need to monitor more closely.
2018 guidelines/things to tackle = notes to self
- My word is Gratitude!
- Stop worrying about things that may never come to pass (most things) and things I cannot control (DH’s health for example).
- Focus on eating for health and not the scale. I have reset MFP to track protein (50 gm/day) fiber (30 gm/day) sugars (50 gm/day). I no longer focus on fats or carbs or calories for that matter, but will aim for healthy fats and complex/high fiber carbs.
- Keep up with strength training 3 times per week, and aim for 6000 steps per day average.
- Incorporate exercises to work on balance.
- Eat more fruits and green veggies each day. Include both raw and cooked greens and veggies: salads, smoothies, soups. Tips from Dr. Joel Fuhrman: cut up aromatics (onions, garlic, shallots) into little pieces to activate enzymes. Same goes for kale and other veggies. Make supper a huge salad, chew slowly and thoroughly-again, to activate digestive enzymes.
- Cut back on dairy and meat – see if it helps with allergies and digestive issues. Missing gallbladder makes meat a little harder for me to digest I think.
- Continue to work on bone health – I recently ran across this: Per Dr. Fuhrman and others: calcium from veggies is more bioavailable if the body is alkaline – meat, dairy and coffee (sob) push it to the acid side of the spectrum which is thought to actually leach calcium from bones. Wow.
- Cut back on added sugar and processed food/sweets. Once again putting out the “not welcome” sign to Mr. Reese Cup and Little Debbie. Those two are insidious and sneaky!
- Work on improving sleep, and conquering early morning headaches.
My copy and paste and bulleting got kind of goobered up but I think it's still readable.
I am waiting for the sun to warm up my little weight lifting room. So far it's been foggy and cold all day so I may wait until tomorrow.
Fireworks wasn't too bad last night; thankfully we got the dogs out early to do their business before the major booming started. Sophie still wandered around and was restless all night, even with the thundershirt.
I have a line on a new housecleaner who cleans for our dog groomer and a good friend of mine. What we are looking forward to the most is a reason to clean up the clutter and start hauling items to the mission or the thrift store!
OK ladies, gotta run.

God afternoon dear sisters. My year in review:! Survived! My word for next year, I would say it should be calm or a word meaning that, maybe like serenity. I asked Charlie and he dais goal for 2018 is to stay below 200 and goal for January would be get below 200. I did gain 5 pounds in the hospital, big bummer.
Didn't sleep well last night. Went to bed with a pretty high blood pressure and my tingly fingers really bug me at night. O right now I feel like I could take a good nap.
Welcome to all mew members. This is the time we get a lot of new members, look forward to getting to know you all.

Happy New Year friends and thank you, Barbie. How blessed I feel getting started in another year with you all. I love the MFP year in review and find it fascinating that I walked over 540 miles. Thank you Fitbit for faithfully tracking and syncing. My most frequently logged food was soy milk, which I use in coffee and tea multiple times a day.
My December goals are somewhere in the ethers. I do remember than one had to do with tracking my water consumption on the fitbit, which was a fail. Also, as with every month, my ultimate goal is to 'be lighter'. Another fail. I maintained, but the scale went up an down like a roller coaster all month.
Wendy: Thank you for the research. Sugar is a beast. I have to do a better job of cleaning it out of my system after this season of festive foods. My DH is super thin and loves treats, so I buy for him (or so I justify). But, it's not good for him or his dementia, so it's time for both of us to cut it way back.
So, for January, here goes!
> Keep sugary treats out of my grocery basket. Less that comes home, less we consume.
> Bring grocery spending down by 10%
> Stay alcohol free, even on our cruise
> When faced with food choices, adopt a bias for vegetables
> Be lighter
Word for 2018 = "requiescence" was my original choice, but now feel more aligned with "RELEASE"
Ultimately want to create a life that is simple and peaceful. To get there, there is alot of 'stuff' that I need to release.
Stay well. Stay positive. Always remember how special you are. We can do this!

Hi, I'm new to this group. This is day 1 of my new eating/exercising plan. I turn 50 in March and I don't want to hate the pictures so my goal is 20 lbs by March 15. 10 more pounds after that to be at final goal, but I'm being realistic.
January Goals:
Dance (Salsa and CW lessons) 4 times a week (Tues/Thurs)
Gym 2 days a week (Mon/Wed)
2 mile walk in neighborhood 2 days a week (Saturday/Sunday)
Low carb diet with clean eating
I'm very determined and hoping to find support to stay determined. Adult children and their pets were here for 10 days over holidays and I'm just ready to get my house back in order and make this happen10 -
Welcome to the new ladies!
We are watching CFB playoff games this evening. Our Sooners have started strong, here’s hoping they can keep it up!

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening Friends,
Wendy, I see you know what I was talking about when allowing myself to get in a foul mood because of the actions of family. It’s just that I normally can stay detached or at least only get irritated for a moment. Thanks to you and the others for kind words. Things are much better the past two days.
Terry, I think Inspiring Connections is a fine name. I really like using the word connections. I’m big on alliterations so I would probably try something like Caring Connections or Careful Connections or Charming Connections….but that’s just me. (later) I do like Chainmaille connections, too.
Kay, good job on getting through your year end to do list. You are probably one of the most organized people I know.
Sue, I’ve been watching that cold Texas weather. It even said Brownsville has a cold weather warning and that is near where I grew up. Ya’ll just stay in and stay warm. This too will pass.
Felicia, I’ll admit it…I’m jealous. I hope you have a ball in Cabo but bring some warm weather back to us.
Sharon, just do what is right for you. If you want your marriage to work I guess my only suggestion would be to talk to him as much as possible. If you then see that it has no hope, at least it would help you with the next move. I can’t tell if he acts like he wants to work things out, but then I have had a skip some posts from time to time. It just doesn’t sound like it if he is still calling and texting. Just know you have our support.
Allie, I hope you don’t pay any attention to your brother. You do more than anyone I know.
Heather, so glad you heard from your cancer friend!!
Barbie, thank you for starting us a new year. I hope it’s a great one for all of us.
Janetr, I know we each deal with our own demons but I can’t believe all the weight you have lost and you still feel inadequate. I just think you are the bomb. Please feel my love and arms around you telling you that you are more than good enough. Trust me, we all see pounds creep back on and have to fight it. I love you! (((Hugs)))
Viv, it sounds like a rough start to the year but now there is only UP to go. (((Hugs)))
Joyce, I’m so glad you are home. I was concerned about you.
Wendy, sending calming vibes your way. I feel your pain!
Rita the Roamer, great pictures. Have fun in NM.
to all the Newbies. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
I love all the words for the year and the encouraging messages I’ve read. Some of us have not done such a great job this past year but a new year offers new opportunities. Even though my eating and exercise haven’t been what I’d like, I have totally enjoyed all the posts and reading about the victories and downfalls of my PhatChat Friends. I did exercise today for the first day in a while. I’ll keep doing that at home until the crowds thin out at the gym and then I’ll get going back there. Ladies, we can do this so let’s all put one foot in front of the other and move forward.
Sending love, good thoughts and sunshine to all of you.
I Love you

Deb ME vs ME (Me vs Million Excuses). Very clever of you!
Wow - very observant of you, although it was completely unintentional - it certainly is eye-opening and will help me refocus. Very cool.

DJ, thanks for bringing that up about Janetr. Janetr, I have been thinking about that post a lot. It really resonated with me. It reminded me of my own struggles with self esteem, especially when I am struggling with my weight. Other people love me, even cherish me, fat or thin, so I must have other redeeming qualities. I realized that it isn't just my body image that's distorted. And I want to chime in with DJ and say that you have inspired me. One example is doing squats after knee replacements. Really? That's amazing to me. And you have succeeded at weight loss and maintenance. Not to mention you are kind and funny and talented.
So there.

For me, the importance of having a word for the year is to help me get back on track when I am straying. In 2016 when my husband had a zillion diagnostic procedures and then spine surgery which required many day long trips to Seattle along with me doing many of his chores because of his back pain, I adopted the word "alacrity" to help me get back on track with a sunny attitude toward all bumps in the road. When I found myself getting sullen and grouchy and feeling sorry for myself, I remembered "alacrity" and pushed myself back to a better attitude. My happiness commandment "Act the way you want to feel", accomplished much the same thing. My word for this year, "tenacity" will be the push I'll need to complete many projects that will take weeks or months of daily grunt work.

Thank you Barbie, and Happy New Year to all! I am trying to be optimistic that 2018 will be happier for us all.
Having a hard time thinking of the Y in this bitter cold snap. I feel like I might need a suitcase for all the clothes and gear, plus an extra half hour to change.
A week in the twenties would be loverly. Managed to go on a brief photo hike in the woods but the wind chill did me in after half an hour. The fairy houses on the trail were covered in snow and I think the fairies have gone south for the winter.

Karen, Thanks for what you said. It reminded me that one of my Happiness Commandments is "Lighten up." I can take things too seriously and miss the important stuff.
Welcome, Karen from San Jose, CA, I, too, have trouble with relationships. I am an introvert and like my own company best but somehow have built strong connections to the women on this thread. When I started here, someone suggested that I be "open-minded to new ideas" and because of that, I read a book suggested by someone on this thread and that book changed my life and the book suggested another and another and then some podcasts and I've found the tools to build the life of my dreams.

cityjaneLondon wrote: »Given that most of you won't have read back in December (thanks Barbara) I'm carrying on my new afternoon exercise session commitment by buying some new running shoes (New Balance) a phone/key/money belt and some running earphones with ear hooks. I am sooooooo not a runner, but the stuff will come in handy whatever becomes of my new venture. My knee seems ok at rest so far, so I'm hoping for good things. I'm not logging the afternoon session, so it will be a nice boost to my CICO.
For those who are new, I do a long exercise session every morning, but I'm still slowly gaining weight, so I'm adding a walk/run session or some kettlebell swings into the afternoon. I'm hoping that will take care of the 5 lbs I've put on since maintenance and, who knows, I may end up being able to run and even liking it. :noway:
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx
Yes, I did the same sort of thing at the beginning of December.
I've got the shoes, the phone/key/money belt, and a whole new collection of exercise clothing.
I am not a runner either, and each time I get on the bicycle again, between runs, I fall in love with cycling all over again. It is just so much better than running! But nevertheless, running does give me more "bang for my buck". I can burn more calories and get a better workout in a shorter period of time.
And slowly but surely, it is getting a little bit easier. I did a 3 km run on New Year's Day and when I finished, it was kind of like, "What? That's it? I'm done? Already?" ... which I took as a good sign that I am getting used to it.
Now regarding running to lose weight ... yes, apparently that can happen. In fact, that was one of the main reasons I started running at the beginning of December. My coworkers who run are as slender as can be, and I've noticed that one in particular has really slimmed down in recent months as she has started increasing her running. But for some reason, I've suddenly put on about 4 kg in December, since I started running!! OK, I admit, I have been eating whatever I want since December 15th, but really you'd think that running, walking, and cycling all month would have off-set some of that! So I'm not quite sure what's going on.
I suspect some of it is water weight ... heat, sunburn, and exercise can all cause water retention and I've experienced all three in the last couple weeks. And some of it would be Christmas eating. The rest ... who knows. But nevertheless, I'll stick with the running (and walking and cycling) throughout January. And I'll also cut back on the eating. Hopefully I'll drop those 4 kg fairly quickly.
But I did have a bit of a "roll-eyes laugh" when I stepped on the scale and discovered that weight increase ... and I informed the scale in no uncertain terms that running was supposed to make me lose weight not gain it. But the scale didn't seem to care.

Happy New Year everyone.
Goals for January- Log my food every day
- Go to the gym every day
- Lose 5 lbs.
We went to see Starwars this afternoon. It was kinda funny. My husband went to get seats while my son and I stopped at the concession stand. As my son and I were walking towards the theater my husband comes out to check that he was in the right theater. The show was about to start and we were the only ones there. We thought this was pretty odd since the movie is still number one at the box office. As the movie began we discovered why it was empty. We happened to pick the showing that was in English with Spanish subtitles. I guess there wasn't a high demand for the multi-lingual version today. It was a bit creepy having the whole theater to ourselves.
Well, back to work tomorrow after a week off. I'm looking forward to getting back into the regular routine.
I wish you all marvelous 2018.

I love cycling too. I can't bring myself to ride an exercise bike. I put my cycling on hold until the nice weather comes back. To me, there's nothing better than a nice bike ride on a nice day.

Putting on weight when running? Yup. I did/do. That's why I focus on measurements and BMI instead of poundage for the most part. Would I love to see the 145 show up on my scale but watching the body composition has been much better for me in the long run.
Starting weight 204
Goal weight - 145
Current weight 154.56 -
Donna in Chicago I laughed out loud at your Star Wars story. I can totally picture me doing that. Funny!!!

I'm actually thinking I need to do measurements again. I haven't done them in a while. The thing is, despite the fact that I've suddenly packed on 4 kg, I'm still comfortably wearing the clothes I was in before the 4 kg gain. In fact, I noticed that the pair of pants I wore on Sunday was still quite loose. So I'm not quite sure where I gained the 4 kg. And that said, I'm starting to notice more muscle development in my legs.
(I'm right at the top end of my normal BMI range now)
