Alcohol-free night for me last night! We’re on vacation right now and spent the entire day hiking and exploring craters and Indian adobe ruins. A fascinating and beautiful day with my husband and daughter. It would have been easy to have a few drinks at the end of the day, but instead my daughter made us lemonade and we sat together and did crossword puzzles on my iPad, while snuggled under a blanket on the sofa. Spent my bonus calories (hiking calories + no alcohol calories) on a slice of banana cream pie, one of my all-time favorites!
@JulieAL1969 Thanks for posting the snapshot on cravings. Very interesting and insightful!
Here’s to another bright, adventurous day! Hope everyone is doing well and I look forward to seeing all your updates!6 -
Caved in to red wine last night. Grrr.5

Yay! SLEEP!!! @kittybenn, thank you for the app recommendation. I listened to a few of the sleep meditations yesterday and then just mentally went through one of them last night (without the app) and was asleep before I could finish thinking through it. First really great night of sleep since Jan. 1. It makes a big difference.
One possible little "breakthrough" last night. I don't know if anyone else experiences this, but at night I crave wine because I feel "empty." Water and herbal tea just don't seem to do it, and I become tempted to eat something filling like cheese and bread just to fill up that emptiness. Hard to explain. It's not emotional emptiness but a real feeling that something is lacking in my body. Last night I had a little orange juice mixed with Perrier, and that seemed to finally do the trick. Maybe it's the sugar I'm missing. I don't eat sweets at all (don't like them), but I know alcohol has a lot of sugar, so I'm thinking that's what I've been "empty" for. That may have also helped the sleep.
Also, for a good substitute, you might try a shrub. You can Google shrubs. They've been around since at least the Renaissance. Tait Farms has some good ones. They are fruity and also vinegary. Mixed with sparkling water they are a really good wine or cocktail substitute.
I can't believe it's the second week. I'm so proud of all of us, no matter which specific path we're choosing for this January. Oh, my non-alcohol goal is to use my Clarisonic every night, followed by awesome face cream. It's not too hard a goal, but when drinking I can easily fall into bed with makeup on. My mom, who is 85 and looks like Jane Fonda in terms of how she is aging, hasn't missed the nightly "take off the makeup and moisturize" routine ever in her whole life. Somehow I didn't inherit that discipline, but I'm working on it.5 -
No heartburn now for like 6 days, lol. That's enough reason to abstain by itself! Day 7 for me, a whole week! My weekend went by without a hitch and I'm feeling really good.6

Day 7 here too. Love reading the thread. This part of the week is normal, wouldn’t usually drink until Thursday/Friday, hope that doesn’t change. Massive difference in exercise so it’s all positive change.3

Yes! Being heartburn free is a hugely overlooked benefit!3 -
Well, bombed the weekend. Starting over. This will be day 2. (As I did stay good last night even though my husband picked up some beer.) It's easier for me to not drink on Sunday, I am in the mindset that I have to work the following day. However, mid-week usually rises the challenge where I tend to not think like this. I typically like a Wednesday night drink. I ordered This Naked Mind and my husband has agreed to read it with me. Hoping that helps.3

This is exactly what I need. Love this thread and will be watching.3

I made it passed the weekend!!! Yes!!!!!
I am good with not drinking during the week my fear is the weekend and I made it through!!4 -
I'm on Day 7 with wine o'clock hasn't come around. I'm very happy with my Dry January choice.
Reading This Naked Mind provides a lot of valuable information, and additional motivation. I do not agree, however, that people cannot tell the difference tasting cheap wine and good wine. But I do know from previous experiences (with short periods of leaving wine alone) that often wine I used to like doesn't taste good, at first.1 -
Yesterday- 2 coffees with amaretto around lunch at the in-laws, and a beer. Definitely stayed in control but still- it wasn't the zero drinks I had planned. Now my husband is travelling for the week and there is a huge open bottle of red on the counter. I really think I'm going to have to dump it if I want to prevent myself from having it.4

Here's an eye opener if you have an apple watch. Download the app auto sleep. And then look at it. My SLEEPING heart rates are at least 10 beats per minute higher on wine nights. and my DEEP SLEEP drops to near zero. Friday night, no wine 1.5 hrs of deep sleep. Last night, wine, 4 minutes of deep sleep.8

Big congrats to those of you that have maintained Dry January! I am so inspired! I failed this weekend, which is not a surprise to me. As I have mentioned before, I just don't think I have truly welcomed the idea of giving up alcohol forever yet. I think I need to get a copy of the Naked Mind.
My fail came on Friday night as I was cooking. I was doing well until I realized I was out of chicken broth and had to send my husband to the store. So, of course I told him to get a bottle of wine. The good news is that I only drank half of it (about 12 oz, so 2ish glasses?), and I was okay with that. Then we stayed in again on Saturday night too and I only had one glass of wine...good going. But last night I had 3 glasses, which is more than I wanted. Starting over again tonight.5 -

The heartburn is the whole reason I decided to cut back, it gets SO bad... My boyfriend never gets it so he doesn't understand at all how painful it can be.4 -
@donimfpdonimfp One other thing about the sleeping. I have an app called Insight Timer, and it's a lifesaver when I can't sleep. I just put my phone under my pillow, plug the headphones in and pick a meditation. You can look for them by issue, such as sleep problems. Just about any will work. I can almost guarantee you will be sawing logs before the thing ends.
Wow, thank you for mentioning the app for sleep...I didn't even think about looking for apps for that...very cool!1 -

Me too! I read that and thought ok maybe not the difference between a 20 dollar bottle and a 40 dollar bottle but good wine is amazing. I will be curious about my taste buds when dry Jan is over. I would really like to drink better quality in much smaller quantity and frequency when the month is up.

Wow.. so many people have joined in.
Interesting to see / know what portion is working towards more "sustainable" moderation versus abstaining completely.
Also would be interesting to see what % of people are in the process of losing weight versus maintaining and if they are working towards abstaining or sustainable moderation.
I'm definitely in the "sustainable" camp (for now anyways). Fortunately, I've never had an issue of needing to keep going once I start. I'm generally done after 1 or perhaps 2 bottles of good beer. I never make it to 3 by desire... no interest.1 -
How is everyone doing with this challenge? I started off Jan 1 wanting to go for 21 days abstaining, but have not. I have been able to cut way back, which I am proud of. I am so tired of the extra calories derailing my nutrition plans, and I hope to be able to cut out the alcohol to a point where it's a 'cheat' here and there, and not such a common habit. It's especially hard with all the locally made beers and that fun trend being everywhere now. I'd love to read your progress, and I'll chime in soon too!3

I am going for sustainable moderation, but I thought I would see if I could make it a dry January. Turns out the answer is no, but I have definitely done a much better job at the "moderation" part since joining this thread in November. I am maintaining my weight. Unlike a lot of people on this thread, I don't generally equate my alcohol consumption with weight gain, but I am extremely active and also don't tend to eat more when I drink in general.2
