I haven't posted in a while, life kind of got in the way. My monthly total is right around 20 miles (50 mile goal). Yesterday I had to take my daughter to urgent care, turns out she sprained her ankle Monday evening. We got some snow last night and this morning so between that and her ankle no school for her and no work for me. Going to get back to the normal routine tomorrow. I registered for the Marine 5 mile in May today! So excited for that and the trip to Virginia with my fiance, the race is a day before my 30th birthday so it's like my present to myself6

Well school was cancelled because snow was forecasted! It didn’t start snowing until 3:45! Oh well, now I’m waiting to hear if school will be closed tomorrow now that it is actually snowing.
I ran in this morning. It was one of those runs that felt great, like I could have gone forever.

I am also way behind on the comments! I'll also try to catch up but so far behind in work right now after being sick last week. I water walked in the lazy river at our rec center on Monday, then Tuesday it was super cold and I just couldn't bring myself to run outside for the first time this year, so ran around the indoor track for 4 mi at the rec center (just hate the dreadmill and last time I ran on one before a big race I hurt myself!). Really pushed it for the last mile and that was kind of fun to not be hampered by road/trail conditions. Did some yoga this morning then I wanted to see what running in the snow (7 mi mostly on snowy sidewalks) would be like since it looks like that is what I am going to be running in for the trail half on Saturday night. Unfortunately it is going to be above freezing (high 30s °F) so I think wet cold feet are going to be a real problem (any suggestions?).
I suffered this last week during two runs. I kept running through slushy puddles and soaking my feet. I found while I was running it wasn’t bad other than the initial shock of them getting wet. I mean my feet didn’t really feel cold even after they got wet. I wear belaga socks.
I would definitely bring dry socks and shoes to change into afterwards.2 -
@ceciliaslater I feel the same way about cold weather running. It’s the getting dressed to get out there, but then I’m happy I did. That’s a shame about the homeless man, makes me so sad.

@zdyb23456 we had no school on Friday because of a winter advisory…we got zero snow, they were off Monday for MLK day, off Tuesday because of winter advisory – we got about ½ of snow, they were off today because the roads were icy and we have a 2 hour delay tomorrow.
@hjeppley I vote wool socks to keep them dry and warm.

We had freezing rain last night and the sidewalks were still pretty slick. The sun set while I was out and I definitely found the run back a lot more treacherous. Head lamp next time so I can spot the ice better. I ran on the snow on top of the grass boulevard whenever it was packed flat and not piled up.

@skippygirlsmom Good suggestion. I was planning on wool already (and that should help with warmth) but I think dry isn’t going to happen on trails with melting snow and 38 degrees.2

@hjeppley the wool should help keep warm even if wet. How about a pair of gaiters to keep the snow out? Won't help much with slush though.2 -

@7lenny7 - every time I see your profile picture I think of Santa Claus! I am pretty sure now that he didn't have a white beard, just a frozen snowy one! On Sunday I waited to run until the game was over. @RunsOnEspresso and @skippygirlsmom - I am also attracted by the bike ads. I have been to cycling classes with my daughter in Seattle and I would love to do that here but it just doesn't seem to be as popular here unless I want to drive a long ways. The classes in Seattle were super high energy and fun, with lots of loud music and you can compete with yourself or others, etc... and the workouts can really kick your *kitten*. She pays quite a bit for her membership but can go to as many classes as she can or wants including cross training classes. You would have to really commit to using that bike or it would never make sense and I don't think it would be nearly as much fun as actually being at the gym in the class

@HRKinchen - I like the way you think! I have the hat - 'Will Run for Wine'! Nice victory on the treadmill! Over time you will see your pace naturally improve until that 4.3mph feels easy and you surpass it!
@ddmom0811 - well... grey does go with everything right?
I have lots of colors and do like the bright ones. I have neon yellow/green Skoras that are reflective so they can be seen in the dark. I also have teal (my favorite color) Merrells but my latest Saucony's look much like your Nikes. Grey was the only color they had in my size at the lower price.
@seanevan10 - stress can have a huge affect on your weight and ability to lose. Unfortunately for many of us running and training is our stress relief and when we can't run or stress levels go crazy. I hope you can find something that helps (shows my age but I immediately think of the commercial - 'Calgon Take me Away!')
@fitoverfortymom - You will love the weather here too - the heat is gone for a little while and it is hanging in the 60s

I am fighting off being sick and it is a tough fight. I feel pretty good and then I start coughing and all I want to do is lie down. No run or training yesterday. This is the 1st time in 6 years I have had to cancel with my trainer and actually the 1st time in at least that long that I can honestly say I am sick. I am hoping it will just be this cough and not progress to anything more... but like @zdyb23456 it started out as the scratchy throat kind of irritation cough and is now more of a 'real' cough. So no running again today but hoping for maybe a little run tomorrow depending on how I feel.7 -

I was scheduled for 3 but wasn't really feeling (long day at work, headache, wanting to cry) but at least I went out. Friday I have 2 on the schedule but I'll probably add a bit more to make up.
I am trying to figure out if I want to aim for the quarter or half marathon for this https://131events.com/hot-as-hell-half/ I'm doing it because a wood medal and the tank top is hilarious! I'm also trying to decide if I do the rock n roll vegas marathon in November. It has a 5 hour cut off and I'm not sure I can handle that.2 -

Definitely wool socks. Look up the Darn Tough line of socks on Amazon. They have a thousand different colors and thicknesses to choose from and are guaranteed to never ever wear out.

Decided that running Dreadmill was better than running dark icey streets with rush hour traffic. Dreadmill had a very off day it seems. At one point it insisted I do a cool down, and I was constantly fighting with it to get it to change its mind. So I got off at 10.3 miles when I could have done 11 or 13. *sigh*
BUT IT IS GOING TO BE IN THE 40sF THIS WEEKEND! I might be able to get a legit long run in! Probably be flooding from all the snow melt though. *shrugs* Might just need bring a raft...4 -

It was cold but I got 3 miles done. It was actually a lot warmer than it was this morning. I think we set a record at 6°f. It was 41°f this afternoon, which was still cold to me but doable.
I probably won't run again until Saturday. I will be heading to my sister's tomorrow after work and then I expect to be at the hospital all day Friday for my Dad's pacemaker surgery. They said it would be an outpatient surgery so we expect to take him home sometime Friday but who knows. He is in relatively good health, but he is 80 years old. I appreciate all the well wishes.

I finally converted your °Fs to °Cs and you're all my heroes for running in sub-zero °C temperatures! Here it's about 7°C/45°F and actually pretty nice.
Yesterday was a rest day, and as I got challenged to run 10K before end of February, I dug out a voucher for a training plan I got after the fitness test. It's nice because they chart out everything based on my own HR zones.
Today is supposed to be day 1, but it's really stormy here, a warning has been issues, hopefully it will calm down by tonight.7 -

Thanks everyone for the advice! I tend to wear mostly Injinji toe socks (including a couple of pairs of wool ones) because I have a couple of misbehaving toes that are much happier when they are separated (kind of like siblings!). I am wondering if I’d be better off with “regular” socks so the toes can keep each other warm instead in the slush....2

18/01 4.24 miles- found it hard to breath. probably a mix of it being very cold and 11 days since last run.
The weather here has been atrocious with storm after storm making running near impossible. Our house was struck with lightening. We are very careful in this kind of weather and turn off all appliances but it travelled through the satellite dish and blew the t.v's. U just can't win

1/1 - 4 treadmill miles on a way too cold day.
1/2 - Two flat tires doomed my chances of getting to the Y / gym.
1/3 - 4 more 'mill miles.
1/4 - 5.1 treadmill miles at Trek Class, then upper body weights.
1/5 - Unplanned rest day.
1/6 - 4 treadmill miles, then upper body weights.
1/7 - Another 4 on the 'mill. Finally could have run outside, but my son asks me to take him to the gym
1/8 - Nothing yet, but planning an odd (for me) evening run.
1/8 - 4.8 miles. First outdoor run in a while. Almost got hit by cars twice...people are stupid.
1/9 - Rest day.
1/10 - 5 miles outside...woot!
1/11 - Snow day (really?!?). Stayed home with kids, snuck to Y in late afternoon for 4 treadmill miles and some weights.
1/12 - Really sore in the low back, hips and knees. Gonna wait and see.
1/13 - 5 treadmill miles. Didn't hurt to run, but the rest of the day was very sore / stiff.
1/14 - Rest day.
1/15 - 10.5 "miles" on stationary bike, then upper body weights.
1/16 - Rest day.
1/17 - 10.5 miles on stationary bike and upper body weights.
1/18 - 4.5 treadmill miles at Trek Class. Didn't do the inclines as directed, will see how hip feels today.

How scary! I was emailing with a co-worker in the Netherlands today and she was talking about what a mild winter they have had but lots of rain and storms, like today, with three people killed.2 -

Silly question, do you not have lightning rods on your house? Should be one taller than your satellite dish to draw the hit way. Not perfect, but might have stopped this one.0 -

Race day is Saturday. I'm nervous but also looking forward to it. It's my first 5k race after a two-year hiatus with running (or exercise for that matter!) Hah. I picked running back up in September and still feel extremely new to it all.
I hope it's paranoia ahead of the race but my legs have been super sore after I strength-trained on Tuesday followed by a day of rest. Some articles online say not to run in the 48 hours before a race. Others say failing to run is more detrimental than not running. So I think I'm going to run a slow, easy mile tomorrow, the day before the race, just to keep my legs and muscles loose.
I feel worse on days I don't run.
