Chips make me really sad. Those small bags you can buy at the convenience store are like 500 calories. I love chips. I switched over to chex mix since it feels a bit denser and less calories for how much you get.14

Chipotle, I get a salad bowl, no dressing, no rice, just lettuce, chicken, mild salsa, black beans, and cheese and that has over 500 calories. I think they must just have large portions of beans and chicken. So now if I order it I split it into two meals.5

I think the calories for Chipotle are reasonable for what you get. It's not just the meat and beans, it's the cheese. Cheese has a LOT of calories for a small amount of food.15

If it's very large instant coffee it can happen. I typically drink about a liter of coffee a day, and when I'm out of regular coffee and doing instant It adds up to about 20 something calories. Espresso is also higher in calories (3 calories per shot)3 -
I agree with all of the above. I'm feeling that overall I'm better off cooking at home so I have more control over the calories by controlling the food prep. Why do chefs cook with so much oil... and everything they use is a full-fat version? It is frustrating to look at the calories on the menus at restaurants because I do love and almost prefer to eat out. And I don't much like the work of cooking and food prep on top of so many other responsibilities in my work and home life.
Here are some ideas that I find help me:
1. Make a salad or order a salad with dressing on the side. Dip your fork tines slightly into the dressing before each bite. You may put a tablespoon of dressing in the side cup but you use far less than that--maybe a teaspoon or two?--when all is said and done. Then track the amount of dressing you actually used.
2. When at a restaurant, immediately ask for takeout box to come with the meal so you can put aside half or two-thirds of the meal before you even take your first bite. Usually the meals are so fat-dense that you'll be sated and full (if you eat slowly and drink your water or tea or coffee) and you won't need the rest of the meal anyway. Or bring your own tupperware and discretely put the meal away into the tupperware before you start.
3. Instead of a bowl of cereal, try just a tablespoon of it sprinkled on top of your low cal yogurt (maybe along with some fruit or cinnamon). I do this on top of Dannon Oikos Triple Zero yogurt and it is a super high protein breakfast that still has a bit of cereal crunch that I crave. The yogurt is not low cal but it is nutrition dense when you look at it and I've found it lasts me longer than many other things do.
4. When making foods like casseroles or omelets add some of your favorite low-cal veggies to dilute the higher calorie elements and make it more plant-based. For example, if I make mini-omelets in a muffin pan I can dilute them with tomato, spinach, celery, onion, peppers, mushrooms and it becomes more food (more bulk, more filling) but less caloric per volume.
I don't have all the answers, God knows. Just enthusiastic right now about trying to really learn a new lifestyle which means changing all these habits. And tracking everything which has made the biggest difference. And lots of "wake up calls" when learning how many calories are in things!33 -
"Healthy" foods in general. I went to have a quinoa bowl from Another Broken Egg as it's listed as one of their healthy options. I could get pancakes for the calories that were in that bowl.4

And this is exactly why everyone always suggests to get one to people who arent using it but claiming they are eating 1200 calories. They usually find out that they are eating double or even more than they think!18 -

Thats a trap, The reality is you dont see them starving themselves at home, you see them having that one 1000 calorie meal in front of you. You also might not see them on their 3 hour bike ride to earn that meal either! Dont be so hard on yourself, there is nothing wrong but with how you were taught to eat. The same problem that I had/have.31 -
For the salad dressing woes: I hate vegetables in general but I am making myself eat one large half spinach/half spring mix salad a day and have found with the right ingredients I am really enjoying it.
My saving grace is the line of dressings from Bolthouse Farms. They are yogurt dressings and 45 calories per two tablespoons (30g) and taste like full fat. I love the Caesar but they also have other ones like Avocado Ranch and Blue Cheese. They are in the refrigerated section in produce.19 -
Nuts.......200 calories for just 1/4 cup of walnuts. Not big enough for a snack for me.11

Pretty much anything in a restaurant. God bless the states that require calories to be posted on menus. It really DOES help me to think twice about what I order or about eating more than half of the serving.

But, this is pretty reasonable, I think. It's well-balanced in terms of food groups and it is so filling. If I have a bowl for a late lunch, my dinner tends to be really, really light. I have to travel for work quite often, and I find myself going to Chipotle often because I know I can get a reasonable meal.16 -
Wendy's Medium fries clocks in at 405 kcals.

All of the swirl coffees from Dunkins! I usually get the flavor shot...but (for example) the pumpkin swirl coffee with just cream (a large) had over 300 calories in it! I never drank one again...5

OMG I ate lunch out with coworkers and got a California Omelette thinking it was a good choice. 916 CALORIES, are you kidding me for a omelette.
The Skinnylicious menu is the only way for me to enjoy The Cheesecake Factory. I love the Ahi Tuna Salad and the Steak Medallions.7 -
Portion sizes are the issue for me. I never realized it but I was having 600 calories of pasta per meal and thinking that it was the "typical" serving size as that's how it is always eaten in my culture. Turns out I def was not eating one or 1.5 servings...6

I was shocked that the kettle style of chips (specifically sea salt & vinegar) have TWO servings in the small bags. It doesn't seem to matter what brand that I have tried either.. Jimmy Johns, Hyvee, etc. They all have two servings. And yet Doritos & Lays all have one serving. Tricky tricky. Another one that surprised me is Perkins muffins. I had my first one at work a few weeks ago after someone brought one in for a birthday... 570 calories in a chocolate one. It was a big muffin.. but 570 calories???5

I've learned to follow my sister's method of ordering dressing on the side and then dipping my fork in it as I go along...uses a tablespoon or two at the most.14

Certain specific items on Wagamama's menu. I had ramen there once and it was under 500cal for a massive vat of food, so I went again and had a different, but very similar to the untrained eye, ramen bowl. Nearly 1000cal. I thought it was a mistake on the website!
So be warned. Wagamama can be amazing value calorie wise, or a complete killer. It's a minefield.0 -
