Ketogenic diet

On that note, Jason Fung and Adam Nally are both physicians. Adam Nally is the second leading shill of EKs next to Jimmy Moore. I wouldn't qualify anyone of them to be properly versed in nutritional science and metabolism, let alone body compositioin. Waving around what degrees someone holds is basically a dick measuring contest.
I'd actually put more trust in most of the experienced MFP members who took the time to understand how it works from food to poop. Just like I'd rather ask the most jacked guy in the gym what his programming was to get big and strong over a healthcare professional who doesn't look like they've stepped into a gym. But, I wouldn't ask jacked and tan to assess acute flank pain.
The field experts do not have to be credentialed or degreed to be considered credible. It's the weight of their understanding and being able to apply it practically that carries credibility.
While I get where you're going and concur for the most part, I don't necessarily agree 100% with the bolded. Oftentimes, the biggest, most jacked guy in the gym is also the guy with the best genetics and, depending on the gym you go to, might also be 'roided to the gills. Many of those kinds of guys succeed in spite of what they do rather than because of what they do.
I'd put a lot more trust in guys like Lyle McDonald or Brad Schoenfeld for good advice than I would in an IFBB pro bodybuilder. And then you have guys like Eric Helms who checks all the boxes - he's a competitive natural bodybuilder, competitive unequipped powerlifter, has a PhD in Strength & Conditioning (along with BA and MA in related fitness/nutrition disciplines) and is a research fellow at a sports performance research institute.5 -

I get what you mean. I just used a hyperbolic example in place of the usual examples of Lyle, Brad, Eric, or Alan to represent the generic stereotype of a gymrat who represents specified applied knowledge in aesthetics and strength. But I wholeheartedly agree with exactly what you said. I’m not genetically gifted, so if I gotta get my 600mg, Mr. jacked and tan might know, but even then I’d rather ask Broderick Chavez or Chest Rockwell. Lol2 -

Sounds like others here have posted about "fats" not being their solution to weight management as Jason reports below.
"Dietary fat does not increase satiety a lot compared to protein. If you think about eating a steak, or a steak with butter, the butter adds little in terms of satiety. Or consider a hamburger versus a cheeseburger – not much difference for most people in terms of satiety. High protein, on the other hand is quite filling. It’s really hard to overeat beef, for example. I consider that protein is the most satiating, fat less so, and refined carbohydrates especially sugar, the least. For example, drinking Coke adds little in terms of feeling full. However, this does not apply to all carbs – a baked potato, for example is very high in carbohydrates but very filling, too. Beans are also very filling.
So, if you know you tend to overeat fatty foods, you may consider changing to something else instead. I don’t think to simply adding more and more fat to the diet is necessarily the answer for weight loss. It may work well in some people, but not everybody.

And this is actually one of the few times Fung has actually been on the mark, but also serves as an example of the broken clock metaphor.
From a macro perspective, what he’s saying directly coincides with nutrient density to provide satiety, regardless of the macro composition (protein, carbs, and fiber). He’s also implying that fat calories are energy dense with very little satiety (by virtue of suggesting they can be overeaten, and that it’s difficult to overeat beef), which is actually acknowledging energy balance without directly mentioning it. “Overeat” = energy surplus; “difficult to overeat” = energy deficit or balance.
Pair it with his “CRaP” article and you can see where the dissonance is highlighted.12 -

were your seizures due to your blood sugar crashing? are you diabetic too or? what do you mean rapidly losing weight? and how do you measure your food intake? because rapid weight loss is usually from a very high deficit which should not be the case if you are really eating 2500 calories, unless you are on the go all day every day,or you have an underlying health issue causing it that you dont know about.
Its a possibility that my seizures are due to low blood sugar, although ive had seizures since age 7. I dont have diabetes but my father does. I have reactive hypoglycemia, epilepsy, IBS, Gastroparesis, and SIBO. Veggies, fruits, grains, nuts, seeds, beans, wheat, and most dairy makes me look 5 months pregnant along with gas, cramps, bowel issues (my stomach will temporarily swell). My safe foods are meat, butter, oils, nut butters, cream cheese, etc. Anything low in fiber (however, i have to avoid refined foods and sugars because of my reactive hypoglycemia). Coconut oil helps me use the bathroom. The IBS-C, Gastroparesis, and methane SIBO causes chronic constipation and slow motility. TMI...but...Coconut oil gives me the runs and I'd rather have that then being backed up for 3-4 weeks. I use a measuring spoon (tablespoon) to fill ice cube trays with coconut oil, nut butter, and stevia and freeze. They taste great! I go through 1-2 trays per day.
Does the high fat bother your gastroparesis? I have severe gastroparesis (70% left at 4 hours) and Crohn's (with an ileostomy so constipation isn't an issue just slow output) and I have been told low fibre, low/moderate fat as fat apparently slows motility.
Fat does not bother me. Only fiber bothers my GP. Everyone who has GP will have their own severity of it. Your's sounds pretty bad. Do what you need to do to manage your symptoms xoxo
I have a recent, tentative diagnosis of gastroparesis. I'm not about to stop following a ketogenic diet, but I haven't found many resources that offer guidance.
Any tips?0 -

Fiber is your enemy. Fiber slows down digestion a lot. Fat slows it down a bit. I stick to low fat as fats really bother me. Everyone is different but most literature about gastroparesis says stick to moderate fat. Eat small meals spread throughout the day. Liquids are much easier digested than solids and lots of people with gastroparesis have normal emptying times with fluids. Those are the general guidelines but everyone is different and those with mild- moderate gastroparesis can definitely eat a bigger variety of foods than those with severe gp. Have you jad a gastric emptying study yet?1 -

I'm going to get the R-R interval study recommended by Dr. Bernstein first, in order to try to determine whether the vagus nerve is involved as it is with many diabetics.
(He cautions that the variability in stomach emptying can produce different results on the emptying test from one day to the next...)

Yes I agree that it varied from day to day. I had 2 3 months apart and both were in the same severity category but 16% different (1st one i had 54% in my stomach at 4 hrs second i had 70% left). I don't have diabetes so I'm in the ideopathic category meaning no one has any clue why I have it. I did have major abdominal surgery for Crohn's 4 months pre symptoms but the surgeon wasn't near my vagus nerve. I was on opioids but not until after symptoms started. My GI blamed the dilaudid as I was on it (i was i hospital) the first test but I had stopped taking it more than a month before the second test which was worse so it obviously wasn't the dilaudid causing it. I'm a medical mystery.1 -

I'm happy about that for sure. My blood suhar always comes back normal. I do have issues because I have an ileostomy (and crohn's)which makes it a bit more complicated drug wise. The meds to speed up your stomach also speed up the small intestine which isn't an issue of you have a colon but without one it causes output, dehydration and electrolyte balance issues so I can only take the minimum dose. Also a lot of the antienemics are also used for constipation which is a big no no for ileostomies (constipation is impossible) for the same reason above. so the drug choices are very limited. Gastroparesis is such a frustrating disease. I hope your tests come back ok.0 -
I too like carbs I am trying to be more careful what I eat but I don’t think it would be especially helpful. I think moderation and a lifestyle change is most helpful and my Pcp said stay away do a paleo instead if one feels the need0

I think it's just another excuse for people to say well i can't do it because of this. you are putting limitations on yourself and already sabotaging your journey. And who says it is not healthy? I follow a plant based way of eating keto. When you break free from the sugar addiction, you don't want to eat those things that are bad for you. Don't knock something til you've tried it for more than 2 days.30

I've read positive things about the keto diet (rapid weight loss, anti-cancer, autism improvements among others) but for me, personally, it comes down to I like carbs and when you look at the Blue Zones (areas in the world people have lived the longest), the themes are similar and they nearly always eat plant-based and legumes, very hard to do either with keto.

Why are sugar, and simple carbs, not my friend? I have no medical reason to restrict them, I have no difficulty moderating them, I lost >30 lbs and am maintaining with no particular focus on carbs at all, certainly no interest in cutting them so low as to follow a keto plan. How exactly did I limit myself and sabotage my journey? What excuses am I making?

To add to this, why would i try something when i am a volume eater, fats are expensive and dont satiate me. Low carb was bad enough, id kill myself with Keto. Besides i lost 50 lbs, kept it off for 6 years and dont want to impede my lifting performance or any potential muscle gains. And i have great blood work. Soo....9 -

I would rather die young than being forced on a keto plant diet. Seriously, your narrow view of what everyone's diet should be is...well I ain't going to post it here, it would be deleted. In life there is no need to restrict anything, moderation is key. If you want to restrict something just because you think it may make you happy...so be it. But to say that "sugar and simple carbs are not your friends", that's just pure bs and a way to market your lifestyle by saying something false.
PS I am a healthy 36 years old man who was able to lose 20-25 lbs on a cut while eating carbs and the evil sugar with a nice clean bill of health.9 -
All my numbers ldl,Hdl are right where they need to be why mess with a good thing? Life is too short to be restrictive maybe you need a pizza make it deep dish and a bottle of wine!!!!!0

I've been on the keto diet lately and have lost around 40 pounds doing it but it's also in conjunction with controlling my caloric intake. I just noticed more consistent, higher weight loss on keto but that's just me. I'm not doing it it forever but I am doing my own kind of cyclical keto (carb meal a week) until I hit my goal and then I'll return to good ole fashioned calorie counting to maintain or bulk or whatever the case my be. It certainly not necessary, I lost 100 pounds eating carbs and sugar and whatever else I wanted!1

As far as long-term weight loss being faster, there are plenty of studies proving that there is no 'metabolic advantage' to a low-carb diet - in other words, you don't lose weight any faster than on any other diet, if calories are held equal. The initial fast weight loss many low-carb dieters experience is nothing more than water weight as your body depletes itself of water and glycogen.7 -

Been there, done that, gained weight, and screwed with my head. Sugar and simple carbs may not be your friends, but they are mine. Some of the foods I like are sweet, and I enjoy eating foods that I like. It makes me happy without sabotaging my progress, so yes, they are my friends. Putting limitations on myself would be literally putting limitations, as in not allowing myself to eat in a way that I find pleasant and satiating, which would be keto in my case.12 -

I have a history of binge eating that I suffered from for almost 30 years. Keto is the first way of eating that has ever put me into remission
Exactly how I feel about it too. It has so far been very good for me.2 -
Not for me. I have better luck with allowing myself to eat what I want, just restricting portions. Disallowing foods would cause me to binge.2

simple carbs are my friend and high fats are the enemy for me. I have a genetic defect to where my body cannot properly process fats and cholesterol, so therefore it could literally kill me doing keto.I lost weight eating in a calorie deficit even eating high amounts of carbs and my cholesterol is in the normal ranges for the first time in 15 years. I did keto before I knew I had my healthy issue/genetic defect and 2 months in I thought I WAS dying.
I had NO energy(no it wasnt keto flu), I was lethargic, could not think straight, was moody and I looked sickly. I also could not even pick up something light as I had no strength. once I stopped doing keto and went back to my low fat.low cholesterol.high fiber diet I started feeling better and was feeling like a normal functional human again.7 -
Low Carb Breckenridge Conference 2018 just happened. For anyone who has some interest in learning more about low carb or keto, they post the lectures on-line. It is a definite low carb bias but the information is generally rather good and correct.
There's only a few videos posted so far but there will be more.

I’m 30 pounds down since February! The options may be slim from the outside looking in but they really aren’t.
-You can incorporate fast food into your diet. There are a lot of popular places that work with people on Keto. Hardee’s and Chick fil a are the best in my opinion. They will make any sandwich keto friendly by adding lettuce instead of the bun. It’s free to do so.
-There are some great brands that are keto friendly. “Know Better Foods” makes bread alternatives for keto dieters, they sell burger buns that I love. I can’t tell the difference between it and whole wheat bread.
-I love ice cream, my wife and I discovered “Enlightened” brand ice cream and I think it tastes better than regular ice cream.1
