Your favorite bogus nutrition/health "advice"

so I was browsing through Tumblr earlier, and one of the "recommended" posts from the Nutrition tag that popped up was this:
and i literally started laughing. like i'm sorry but......no. Just no.
How is a waffle with some peanut butter and blueberries on it a "meal"? And what sad, sad soul eats just an egg, spinach and some damn beans and feels satisfied?
i was amused enough to keep scrolling through the tag, and sure enough, there were more gems, like this:
remember guys, it's SIX almonds and TWO walnuts!!
gotta love it.
So- what's YOUR favorite piece of ridiculous "advice" or BroScience you've encountered recently, either online or IRL? And how did you respond? Did you smile and nod politely, laugh, or start a debate to talk some sense into 'em?

I love the whole drink apple cider and you'll magically wake up and be skinny. Or stay away from all foods with a high percentage of fat in it. Or the wraps for stomachs!11

I was just on Pinterest and saw something about how pineapple juice is 500% more effective than cough syrup at getting rid of a cough because it has a chemical that gets rid of bacteria.0

Alkaline water. Carbs are bad. All weight loss supplements.5

the stomach wraps, oh my god. There's no way those things are comfortable
once i even saw a girl at the gym who was running in a full sweatsuit and on top of that, she had wrapped her upper body in a literal trash bag
That cracks me up. I wish people would understand that exercise doesn't guarantee weight loss, it's literally all about calories. You can run a mile and go eat 4 sandwiches at McDonald's everyday and still end up obese even though you're running a mile.

Eat healthy foods and work out. I stayed obese for over a decade pretty much eating healthy food, and working out (even competing as an athlete).
Calories. It's calories.22 -
Today my cousin has been pinning a lot of nonsense to her Pinterest board about weight loss. One actually said "Lose 40 pounds in a month!" with a picture of a fitness model beside it.
What the actual advice was seemed to be some combination of turmeric smoothies, apple cider vinegar, drinking all the water ever, oh, and chia seeds.6 -

Depends on the quantities. My daughter eats a can of baked beans for dinner quite regularly. I'd add a slice of toast or something myself but she's an adult and can eat like alien's stole her taste buds if she wishes.
LOL. A few days ago I was feeling sorry for myself (have a sprained ankle that's just NOT getting better as fast as I want) and didn't have much of an appetite, so I opened a can of black beans, stirred in a couple of tablespoons of salsa and some canned corn, and called it a meal. No cleanup, either.
And I don't know if it counts as "advice", but I'm baffled and amused by some of the "healthy" trends like:
coconut water
turmeric
kombucha
"smoothie bowls" which seem fine from a nutrition standpoint, but why do people who have all their teeth want to eat the equivalent of baby food?7 -
Can I defend the waffle + peanut butter + blueberries .... I think that would make a great breakfast with a big cup of coffee37

mostly it's the idea that healthy food/drink is fine to have in unlimited or almost unlimited quantities. My friend gives her skinny preteen and teen organic whole milk and she actually suggested they're so skinny because they have never had skimmed milk or hormone-added milk. I lol'ed.4

Those wraps!! Yes. So freaky. When my friend was first dating her now-husband she passed out because she was wearing one of those wraps under her clothing for hours on a date. My question was what if they got down to business, wouldn't he be disturbed that his lady came all wrapped up like a packet of fruit snacks? Whoa.

I just saw on the news today a whole story about how everyone in the study who ate breakfast weighed less and lost more weight and how important it is to eat breakfast to lose weight. I just laughed. They went on to say how "scientists don't know why, but if you want to lose some weight and maintain a healthy weight, you need to eat breakfast". *facepalm*7

Facebook is the worst for woo diets. Always seeing something about taking a pill, drinking this, eating that to lose 10kgs in 2 weeks! Wtf. Thats not even possible uess you are morbidly obese, like morbidly!! Then I see all these people asking how do I sign up and tagging their friends etc. I dont say anything anymore cause people dont want to hear the truth about being in a calorie deficit.. cracks me up though haha4

I do intermittent fasting and am very careful to make sure I am staying in a calorie deficit and eating quality foods as frequently as possible. Do I mess up? Sure. I was feeling guilty about it one day and was told by a friend "don't worry, you can eat whatever you want as long as you're in your window. You'll still lose weight." I never face palmed so hard in my life.5

all i need to say here....My aunt. Like if you know what im saying xD Been a while since i posted about her maybe later ill let you in on some more of her nonsense10

i was amused enough to keep scrolling through the tag, and sure enough, there were more gems, like this:
„Give up alcohol and loneliness”.
GOLD.
I'd add goji chia superfood fixations, the fear of „becoming too acidic” to the point of either drinking only alkaline water or adding a tsp of sodium bicarbonate to a glass, the conviction that if one eats after 6 PM it's going „straight to their thighs”. Oh, also the apple detox. Because *gaps*, who doesn't detox?
Edit: unless it's my mom who is the firm bullcr*p believer, I've learned not to care much or respond either way. With her I do, and it's hard because she has a tendency to embrace all „magic bullet” solutions. But we're getting there... I hope.1 -
Eat a tablespoon of peanut butter before bed. It will cause your metabolism to be higher than normal and burn more calories while you sleep.1

So much woo...
The manager of my Anytime Fitness had a female playing a VR video game to get her heart rate into the fat burning zone.3 -
Waffles with peanut butter and blueberries actually doesn't sound that bad though? I might hit it with some extra honey but still, it seems sound in principle.
Give up loneliness? Are there actually people out there who actively choose loneliness? As an introvert, I might change that one to "stop trying to please everybody" since you extroverts tend to get way too stressed out about what other people think.
How is fish, carrots, and green beans a 5 minute dinner? Are they eating everything raw? Ditto brown rice - what kind of miracle cooking grains do nutritionists buy that they can cook brown rice in less than 5 minutes?9 -
sleep in the cold and burn calories all night....3

My aunt needs to stop watching Dr. Oz...she believes everything coming out of that man's mouth!
"Honey, make sure you add flax to your oats. It's all about the flax and the chia seeds!"... *face palm*5 -

I keep seeing the wraps made up of saran wrap and almost every salve and balm you have in your medicine cabinet. With the neoprene wrap on top. Nope.1 -

I know nutritionists get a bad rap but do you not own a microwave oven? All can be zapped in the microwave for under 5 minutes.0 -
''There is no point counting calories because companies are allowed to be 20% out when putting numbers on their foods''
I mean, okaaaayyy, may be true, probably is, but surely logging and tracking calories along with any weight loss or gain will give you a better plan to work with. If you gain when 'in a deficit' then eat less and take into account the possible 20% discrepancy.
Every time this guy starts with the 20% argument I nearly lose my eyes from rolling them so hard. I have lost around 50lbs and have not struggled against the lying companies lying about calorie numbers!7
