I suppose it's useless at this point to reiterate that the OP was about someone lecturing a perfect stranger in public about their food choices, and the fact that it happened to be splenda is completely incidental to the story. I get the feeling that if this incident had happened at a salad bar and involved croutons this thread would be 20 pages shorter.

All that to say I shouldn't consume dairy for at least a week after my dental surgery coming up. But what's one of the best things to eat for a swollen face post extraction according to the internet? Nutritionally dense, soft, delicious, cold ice cream.
I see a lot of Hagen Dass brand dairy in my near future. Yum!
I can't figure out if I want to make fun of the word 'mesh' or the that the bacteria died in pasteurization. Of course, even if it hadn't it is not harmful.
A little bit longer and these people will ACTUALLY be living 200 years behind.
We're entering a new age where food all has good or bad bacteria. Everything on your specific named diet is good for your gut, and everything else will lead to brain dysfunction because of bad gut bacteria. Except for blueberries because they're on everyone's top ten list. And ACV.
hmmmm does that mean that my Granna didn't eat enough Blueberries? I mean... if they're on everyone's top 10, then if she had eaten enough of them she wouldn't have gotten Alzheimer.
My mum must have forgotten to eat all the super foods..... diagnosed with alzhimers at 44
Ouch. My condolences. At least Granna had the good sense to wait till she was over 70.
[Comment was meant tongue-in-cheek. I know that no one choses to have that insidious disease and would not wish it on anyone. Nor would I wish it on anyone to watch them lose their loved ones to the fogs of forgetfulness.]
You would at least think her tea drinking habit would have helped but no she forgot to add acai berries
Wouldn't wish it on anyone either but you have to laugh sometimes, cryings exhausting and doesn't count as cardio
My mamas 65 now, in a care home for over 10, I've done enough crying for now14 -

I almost feel sad that I've never had the experience of some idiot deciding to lecture me on my food choices because honestly I think I would just find it amusing. No random strangers ever seem to approach me with advice, it must be my resting a-hole face.13

I would have been so tempted to say to the dentist, "Wow, the scientific method really didn't sink in during your pre-dentistry classes, did it?"
After your procedure/appointment, of course.6 -

Then I spent a lot of time countering with my own story of diabetes and how high blood sugar will destroy all my organs and will put me into a coma.
Now I'm too old to be told how to live my life and listen to discussion of my choices, or hear one more time about how someone ordered a triple bacon cheeseburger with a diet coke (Me. It was me. I ordered it.) So now the only response you'd get from me is a death stare while I drink my coffee with 3 Splendas.
TBH I don't understand the hate about getting diet coke with food. Why would I want to add more liquid calories to a large meal? What if I'd rather spend my calories on getting a bigger portion of food than on a liquid drink. Idk it kinda rubs me the wrong way.
It's the all or nothing mentality. Either a meal is "bad food" or "good food". Before I learned about calories and how the body really works, I used to roll my eyes at people who would get a diet soda with their cheeseburger and fries. I mean, you are already having a crappy lunch that's going to make you fat, why worry about the silly little soda? Of course, now I only drink diet and will get a diet soda with a higher cal fast food meal all the time, to fit my cal goal! Live and learn...10 -
And some people who have no current interest in losing weight genuinely prefer the taste of diet coke.
In my past, I too, have been guilty of wondering why someone draws the line at the beverage when eating so much. Now I wish I had drawn the line a few more places giving me less to burn back off.5 -

Back when I was heavy and before I was concerned about losing weight, I still had type 1 diabetes and still had to manage BG. Diet soda eliminate that issue with soda anyway.
As to the taste of Diet Coke... interesting facts about that. A very long time ago, during the "cola wars," Coca-Cola's own marketing research found that consumers prefer the flavor of Pepsi most, the flavor of Diet Coke next, and the flavor of Coke least (amongst those 3 options). Of course, Coca-Cola did not own the Pepsi flavor, but they owned the flavor of Diet Coke. So they tried to gain some market share by making a caloric beverage with the same flavor as Diet Coke. The logic was that consumers preferred the taste of Diet Coke and if it also had sugar and HFCS, then it would sell better than Coke. In April 1985, they launched this new product with the flavor of Diet Coke in a form with sugar... they called it "New Coke." Coca-Cola forgot about the nostalgia factor and ended up bringing back the original Coke flavor only a few months later because of a very vocal group of consumers who resisted the change.1 -
When I want it I still order 'Coca Cola Classic' 30 years later.1

I consume almost exclusively diet soda, but this B.S. about Diet Coke tasting better than Coke Classic is hooey, imo. Very occasionally I will drink a "real" Coke with ALL the calories and corn syrup and savor every delicious bubble.1

I've drank diet soda for so long (35+ years) that I don't even like the taste of regular soda anymore. And although I don't classify foods as "good" vs. "bad", there are some that I consider "not worth the calories" - and regular soda is one of them. I'm a big eater, and 16 ounces of any regular cola drink is almost 200 calories. I can get a pretty decent bang for my buck out of a lot of foods for 200 calories - and still be able to enjoy my diet soda.
I don't drink soda with every meal, but if I am having it with a meal it's always diet soda - whether I'm ordering halibut and steamed vegetables or a triple bacon guacamole cheeseburger and chili cheese fries.2 -

If you only drink it occasionally you should try the Mexican Coke with real cane sugar.1 -
@anvilhead I don't have the option of diet beverages because I don't like the taste so for me it is unsweetened tea or water. It kind of sucks sometimes not having a bigger variety.

@NovusDies - I'm not even picky at all. I drink the store brand diet cola/root beer/Dr. Pepper and enjoy them just as much as the "name brand" versions. I also drink lots of iced tea (both unsweetened and artificially sweetened, depending on what I feel like at the moment) and lots of water. I even like some of the flavored sparkling waters.
As far as artificial sweeteners go, I really don't much care about one over the other. I'm good with aspartame, sucralose, ace-K, whatever.0 -

I have, but my tastebuds have apparently been perverted because everyone else prefers it, but I like the USA version with the corn syrup. It tastes crisper to me, for some reason.0 -

I've tried the Mexican Coke, as well as several of the "throwback" sodas that are made with real cane sugar. None of them trip my trigger, so I just stick with my diet soda. Now if they made a "throwback" version of Dr. Pepper that really actually tasted like Dr. Pepper tasted in the '70s, maybe I'd change my mind.1 -

I definitely prefer the taste of diet coke over any other soda, and I can emphatically state that New Coke was disgusting! If it was supposed to taste like diet coke, somebody's taste buds were on vacation when they were testing it. Thanks for the history lesson, I never knew what was behind that giant marketing fail

That was what their marketing research found. Of course, there are going to be some consumers that prefer the taste of Coke Classic. Based on the research done at that time, those consumers are a minority.1 -
I mostly drink coke zero but really dislike diet coke. So manybpeople say they taste the same but nope not to me they don't.3

Where I used to work I had a manager that criticised everything I ate, bearing in mind she was an unhealthy weight and I am a size 8 (UK size). One day I got out my lunch box and took out my 15g of peanut butter... she looked at me and said 'You know you shouldn't eat peanut butter, its extremely fattening'. I was so shocked there were no words to respond haha.1

Diet advice is like fashion advice and hair advice, should only be listened to if being provided by i) someone whose opinion you have sought and ii) looks like they follow their own advice NB I love peanut butter - wish I was able to stop at 15g!!1 -
Where is @Aaron_K123 ? I have just uncovered evidence that alternate sweeteners are bad! People who use them don't like Mexican Coke!! I am going to Starbucks to spread the word.

If you're buying a $5 coffee you should be able to put anything you want it in.4
-
"You shouldn't use that stuff, you know. It's worse than sugar." "You really need to stop using that, it's nothing but chemicals. It's really a terrible thing to do to your body..."
*Stares* *blink blink*
"Oh, interesting. Can I see your badge?"
"My badge?"
"Your Food Police badge. Surely you got one when you graduated from Fake News University right? Did you major or minor in false nutrition facts?"
*walks away*

"If there's anyone who knows about artificial sweeteners its me. I know all of the artificial sweeteners. They love me, I use them for everything. We're going to make Starbucks great again."
