June 2018 Running Challenge

@rheddmobile it's illegal to be in the park/cemeteries after dark here too. Yes, don't overlook a good cemetery to run in. Little traffic and some of them are quite nice.
I run exclusively at parks during daylight. On weekends we drive 30 minutes to a park where there are cold springs.
I'm a chicken to get out on roads and run. I'm not concerned about traffic as much as I am people and dogs. It is a little frustrating when DH can take off anytime anywhere and run. I did run a few times with a group that ran in an area I'd never think to run. They were too fast for me. But if you found a group, that might be an option.1 -
Oh great group! I'll join with a few goals:
1. Complete C25K - in week 7 atm
2. Run 70k in June
3. Walk 70k - I only log walks that are intentionally 30mins and over8 -
easy 5
to start the month. Muggy

Happy first day in June! My goal this month is 20 miles and to run atleast twice a week. Let’s get it!4

Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative
06/01/18 :::: 1.4 :::: 1.4
For the first day of June, I continue my streak of short runs. Just squeezed in 15 minutes before my circuit training this morning. Tomorrow I may get in a short shake-out run if there is time after I get to Niagara Falls.

I would like to run 75 miles this month.
Friday is usually a strength training day, but I went out for a short run today before family breakfast and returning to GA. We got a call yesterday that our 12 year old basset passed, so today’s run was a tribute to him - one last run to chase the bunnies!
Hubby and I drove/walked most of the Wineglass route earlier this week. The route looks good - I just need to work up my mileage so I can finish!

two questions -
how do you test out head torches/flashlights if you can't run trails at night?
Where do the undead congregate when it's time for breakfast?2 -
@rheddmobile
I run residential areas against traffic sometimes.
or
find a running group. a local running store might have a beginners group or a suggestion for where to run safely.1 -
June 1:
- One hour of running on the treadmill (with a couple of walk breaks).
- No yoga today, that was yesterday (40 minutes).
- 9,562 steps at 9:00 a.m. so I'm well on track for the day.
Happy summer y'all!6 -

Waffle House. Definitely Waffle House.

Thanks for the suggestions, I already do run residential areas - the most recent time we tried to run our residential neighborhood against traffic it was 4 am on a weekday, and we made a game of counting the number of times we had a car try to run us down. Got up to 8 in two miles and lost track. Plus one guy on a porch who offered to sell us drugs as we ran past! I think probably most here live in a very different sort of neighborhood. We've also been shot at while walking in our neighborhood more than once.
Unfortunately I would rather be dipped in hot sauce and eaten by cannibals than join a running group. Plus our local ones are all about beer, which I can't drink.2 -

I'm so sorry to hear about your basset! My childhood dog was a basset, they're the best.1 -
@ariceroni - Great to see you back! Good luck in Chicago. I hope you get that BQ! I am going to run Chicago in 2019. It has been on my bucket list and since I time qualified I figured I should go ahead and do it.
@marisap2010 - So sorry to hear about your pup. I love that you dedicated a run to him!
After having a bit of a slacker month in May, I have been looking forward to getting my mojo back in gear and starting fresh in June. So I guess it's only fitting that the month would start on a Friday, my scheduled rest day. We have a youth baseball game and a grad party to go to tonight, so I am not sure that I can even sneak in a short run with the pooch. Maybe we will take her to the game and I can use her as an excuse to sneak off for a quick mile or two...2 -
@marisap2010 Ack, so sorry for your loss.1
-
@ariceroni - Welcome back! Good luck with your Chicago and BQ training! It will be great following your progress and success!
@rheddmobile - I don't like running in the dark either but when it is hot I do try to get up and out just before or as the sun is coming up. It is usually cool enough to get my run in and light enough to see where I am going or what I am stepping in/on. The river trail by me has solar gates and they unlock at sunrise so if I time it right I can run the trail just as they are opened and be home before most people are heading out the door. If I don't get out early enough I do maintain a cheap purple gym membership and will go run on the dreadmill.
@RespectTheKitty - hahahahaha! absolutely right!
@marisap2010 - what a wonderful tribute to your pup!

2.25 miles today!!!3

Speaking of running before the sun comes up - This is my first summer as a runner and I'm starting to realize why Memphis is one of the most obese cities in America. Both of the running trails I go to - the Greenline and the Greenway near Johnson Park - are illegal to run on except during daylight hours. In fact most parks here are illegal to be in except in daylight.
As for running on roads, the sidewalks are not kept up (plus frequent stretches with no sidewalks at all) and drivers are not pedestrian friendly - I read an article a while back about the odds of being hit as a pedestrian in different cities across the US, and we are statistically one of the most dangerous cities for pedestrians and cyclists.
Near the Greenline bike trail, on a main road entering the most heavily trafficked thoroughfare through the city, the city has made a token effort to be bike friendly by adding a bike lane, but as per usual they kittened it all up - it wasn't possible to widen the road, and one section is too narrow for two lanes plus bikes, so there's a stretch about 200 yards long where the bike lane merges into the right hand traffic lane. So it's a marked bike lane, the law says drivers have to stay three feet away from it, but drivers are also supposed to drive in it. This was understandably confusing, so further up the road drivers kept driving over the cyclists, to the point that the city, in order to avoid being sued by flattened cyclists for tempting them into thinking Poplar avenue was a sane or safe place to be, added narrow, waist high metal poles blocking the bikes from the traffic. The poles are almost invisible in certain lighting conditions, but will really mess up your car if you drive into them, which apparently people do on a regular basis since they are heavily bent and dented.
It's not surprising that a town which makes it nearly impossible to exercise is full of fat people.
I hate running indoors so I'm going to be stuck with the heat of very early morning at the parks, or the broken sidewalks near our home.
@rheddmobile
See if any local highschools/universities will let you run on thier tracks. The ones around me do.2 -
sorry about the dog. it is never easy @marisap20100

You park outside the gates and let yourself in/over.0 -
I'm setting a goal of 50 miles this month. I've just started a 5k to 10k plan to increase my distance over the summer.
Next race is a 7k on 7/7.4 -
01/06 3.52 miles
I did 1 mile this morning but it was just too hot so did the rest this evening after it cooled down with load of thunder and rain.
Thankyou for the welcome back! @Elise4270, @Kgirlhart & @Shanaber. Looks like there are a good few of us starting back so thats motivation alone.
@marisap2010 - sorry you lost your dog, they become part of the family.

I'm good for 4 Kennedy's in June.3

Damn you Gary!! I cannot stop thinking of leaving work early to get a donut. I've made karaoke songs in my head to such thoughts.2

I have a 5k tomorrow morning (NASA Langley 5K Moonwalk and Run) that I hope to break 20 min finally. 5k's suck in general. They're a ballz out DGaF race. Plus there are several student interns participating. All said and done I'm going to have to sell out hard to rep the old folks.3

This is my first month to join this challenge. I have a habit of training for a run, running the race, and then I stop running for months and I have to start training all over again. I haven't run in over 2 months so I am going to start slow and hope that joining this challenge will at least keep me consistent. Goal for this month is 20 miles of running.

June 1 – 9.51 miles (4.5 miles of hill repeats)
@stoshew71 – Thanks for getting us started again!
I’m going with 75 miles for my monthly goal. I’m starting Beachbody’s 80 Day Obsession workout and food plan. I need to loose a few pounds that have crept on and since I don’t have a half marathon until October, I figure now is a good time to cut calories, focus on cross-training and back off on the mileage.

Oh I missed a donut conversation... Is it his Strava run of the day? How about some paczki's? I've never had 'em, but think I'd really like too! Gary, please bring the group some paczki's.3 -
