@Honunui- Hugs to you. May must have been a super tough month with everything piling up like that. Here's hoping that June brings you a fresh start.
@Pastorvincent- Great job on the top 10 finish! I ran an evening 5K last June and it was horribly humid. I was surprised at how much it slowed me down.
Speaking of humidity, this morning I met some friends for a run at a local park. It was a mix of trails and pavement. I really like running here, but this morning it was tough. Super tired legs from hours of gardening yesterday and the humidity was rough, even at 7:30AM. It wasn't just me, the whole group struggled, even our 3 hour marathoner. I just kept reminding everyone (mostly myself) how strong we are going to feel in the fall!2 -
6/1 - 0
6/2 - 2
6/3 - 2
4 of 50 miles
Went with Skip to her training session. They were doing speed work so I tried a new trail in the same park. It was holiday *kitten* going the first mile all pretty up but the return was sweet. First time I trail ran alone. Oh how I’ve missed it.

Yay, I found the last page of this thread! I don't know if I'll be able to keep up this month, but we'll see. As far as a distance goal, I'll say 120 km.
RACE RECAP!!! Yesterday was the Solidarity Half Marathon from Świdnik to Lublin, Poland. I had a blast!
Transportation to the start line was 3 city buses packed solidly with runners. I couldn't even see another female (running is still a male-dominated sport here), and I spent the ride trying to inconspicuously breathe the fresh air coming from the air conditioner above where I was standing. What a relief when those doors finally opened!
It has been hot and humid all week, and that's what we were expecting, but in a wonderful turn of events, we got what was - in my opinion - ideal running weather instead, overcast with some rain to cool us off a little. There was a short period of torrential downpour, but honestly I was having the time of my life at that point and loved it.
My only time goal was to be faster than my halfway split from the marathon 3 weeks ago, so I lined up even further back than the zone I was supposed to be in. It still felt like everyone was passing me in the first 4k though. I told myself that if I went slowly enough at the beginning, I could "play" later, and made mental notes of some of the people who were passing me, as I knew I would see many of them again. Around the 4k mark it started to even out, and then just got better and better from there. There were a few people who would pass me, then slow down, and I'd just keep going at my comfortable pace and would pass them again later, only to have them "rally" (6k into a half marathon?) and pass me again. One girl was doing a run-walk thing, and one guy in particular didn't seem to want me to be ahead of him. I started to get tired of seeing the same people over and over, so I tried this thing where I would wait behind them until I felt ready, then put myself to the side but about 2 steps ahead of them, like I was giving them space but trying to pass them - only I would stay 2 steps ahead, no matter how much they sped up. It was interesting to me to see how hard they would work when it looked like someone was passing them (they weren't doing that when I was a couple meters behind them), and the pace was reasonable enough that I knew I could hold it for miles... they however, couldn't, so I just waited and finally they'd give up, and I wouldn't see them again. Then I could focus on the next person ahead of me - you know, the ones I knew I'd see again later?! Maybe I was having too much fun - Nope! It's called a RACE(!), even for those of us who are closer to the back than the front! And this wasn't a full marathon, I was running the whole thing and not feeling defeated and "bad at running", like I did just a few weeks ago. At the 9k I realized I was clearly doing a lot more passing than being passed, and I don't recall anyone catching me after about the 14k mark!
I am not fast, but I ran a negative split, felt strong the whole way, finished well, and got a PR by over 2 minutes! It's even more of a victory for me because my PR was on a flat course in even better weather (night race), and yesterday's race was on a course that the announcer said was "too hard for PR's". I felt so good, I biked the whole way back downtown later when I missed my ride and didn't want to wait for a bus.
The half marathon is definitely my favorite distance. Oh, and I can check off June for my one-HM-a-month streak. That makes 11 months so far!
Upcoming races:
6/2 Solidarność Half Marathon-DONE!
6/30 Silesian Highland [trail] Half Marathon
7/16 CityTrail OnTour 5k16 -
JUNE! First... on page nine? I've been busy the last couple of days and the month is only going to get busier - my spouse's work retreat is next weekend, then I'm helping my mom move, then I'm going to the west coast to see my sister and then to a work conference for the spouse. So lots of travel, lots of schmoozing, and on top of that I've got some big deadlines for MY work coming up but they haven't gotten me the workflow yet so I'm kind of sitting on my hands waiting for the poop to hit the AC (although I still billed 60 hours this week, which isn't nothing). The yard work is mostly done although there's certainly still a few things to do. Oh yeah, and I think we're going to start trying for a baby in July. O_O
ON TO RUNNING! My two fitness goals for this month will be lifting twice a week to maintain "mah gainz" and running four times a week, continuing to add distance at about a 10% per week as long as I'm still enjoying myself. I decided to take the month off of logging after inadvertently going into a diet break in May - if that means another month maintaining then so be it. I think running definitely influenced my eating more, although it wasn't the only factor. My current estimates have me running just over 60 miles in June, including my first intentional down week. In other firsts, I'm hoping to run my first 10k distance and just this week hit 10 miles ran in a week for the first time after managing an unfortunately hungover 4.37 mile long run yesterday. Oops.
June Miles:
6/1 Fr - 0:26:41 - 2.40
6/2 Sa - 0:54:37 - 4.73
6/3 Su - rest
6/4 Mo - lifting
6/5 Tu - 3.00
6/6 We - 2.40
6/7 Th - lifting
6/8 Fr - 2.00
6/9 Sa - 5.50
Races!
July 4: Red, White and Boom! 5K
October 6: Twin Cities Marathon Weekend 5K (thinking about switching to 10K)
ETA: Something I've been thinking about - outside of the big bucket list races, how do people choose what to participate in? Right now I'm just doing the bucket list thing because I don't know if racing is a thing I'm going to enjoy or not, but in the event I do, there seem to be an awful lot of options out there, and I'm kind of uncomfortable with some of the messaging associated with some of the races. The two I'm registered for are both established events put on by the same organization with exists just to put on these races. But I'm a little overwhelmed by all the other options out there and am not sure about some of the "causes" either or entirely clear on what my registration fees are going towards. Any thoughts would be appreciated!2 -
I have loved everyone's race reports so far this weekend - great job all! I will try to about out to individuals later when I'm not typing from my phone as my family drives to check out a lottery house.
@MegaMooseEsq Outside of the big 'event' races, I picked the MEC race series because it was a) affordable ($12/race entry fee per race since I bought registration for the entire series as a package) and b) a race series designed by runners for runners. I chose the trail series rather than the road series because it sounded interesting, and it has definitely been educational!
My end of July race I picked because of location - we are going to be there on vacation at that time anyway.
My late September race is a repeat of my first 10K that I ran last year. I want to see if I can PR my 10K time on the same course. It's a non-technical trail race.1 -
@PastorVincent Sounds like tough race conditions, Awesome placement anyway!
@lporter229 Thanks for the reminder that the horrible weather can be good training for later Still, that feeling when you breath in and the air is so hot and humid that you want to spit it right back out, bah! It was 96% humidity during my run today, and I had to walk on some of the uphills, so it didn't feel like I did any proper training at all...
@noblsheep Sounds like an intense training day, great job!
@fraukazi Kudos in completing week 7
@biketheworld Welcome to the challenge!
@sarahthes Great photos, very cool that you discovered this nice trail.
@RunsOnEspresso I had Strava premium for a month twice over the last couple of years (sometimes they offer a few weeks free trial). I always cancelled it after the test period. It's not that I would not be willing to pay for it, it just didn't have any advantages that I would use.
I think the only really special feature is that you can let somebody follow your position live while you are running, which might be nice if you have a partner who's worried about you while you are out alone and running. Otherwise, you have the option of filtering segment leader boards by other categories like weight or age (which I don't care about). You get extra analysis graphs like pace distribution, which I usually don't look at (and if I want to, I could get it for free and much better using Stravistix in Chrome - actually, I've donated for that add-on once, because it's really cool. Check it out if you like statistics!).
But you can see for yourself, they have another 30-day-trial thing at the moment: https://www.strava.com/try-premium/2018-web-feed-1st-30

I really need to work op getting up early in summer! It was already 26°C (~80°F) when I was ready to start running. "Feels like 32°C" (90°F). And 96% humidity, ick. I was really not motivated to move far in that weather, so I decided to treat myself with a drive to a nice hill 15 min away. I like the trails there a lot, and I haven't been there since forever, so I figured that would prevent me from turning around after the first few steps
It worked, but next time I need to be smarter: one trail is in the forest, the other pasture in plain sun. And I picked the sunny trail for running up the hill. I nearly melted in the heat... I had to walk at least 10% of the climb up, probably more. Of course, running down was twice the fun, shadow and downhill, but next time I'll make sure to run the trail in the other direction.
This is a picture of the last part of the climb. Fortunately I could see an other runner in the distance, and told myself that as long as he kept running, so would I. But he was still faster than me and disappeared, then I had to try and motivate myself alone again, which was tough. It was (or at least felt) steeper than it looks

It’s been a warm weekend here, so chose to do my long run yesterday as it was MEANT to be the cooler overcast day. I don’t know if it’s better to start early and finish in the heat or start late and hope it cools down at the end.
I chose a route along the coast path in Wales, starting at a nice little village I’ve done on a walk, then ten miles out to a nearby town where I thought I could stop for a break and water before running back. I didn’t check out the satellite of the route properly. Most bits of coastal path tend to be on cliff edges, this was along the beach. So five miles of soft fine sand. All of which crept in to the front of my shoes, pushing my toes back. And I’d not paid attention to the holiday park. Call me a snob, but what I don’t want to be doing when I’m out on a nice scenic run is picking my way through throngs of people clamouring to buy candy floss, ice creams, coloured plastic windmills and hoopla stalls in a typically British Kiss-me-quick environment. It was pure hell.
On the way back I decided to avoid the holiday camp hell, and go via the roads, cutting off a corner by running the top edge of a dune nature reserve. Apparently these dunes were the settings for the film Lawrence of Arabia. All I knew for an hour of heatstroke was that I was lost, very lost, know one knew where I was and if I died I’d get buried in sand and only found when a horse dug its hoof into me.
Thankfully I have gps and ordnance survey maps on my phone so could use a compass to fight my way out, getting my legs ripped to shreds by nettles and plants. (I’m such a graceful creature that my legs are permanently bruised and scratched and bitten).
I made it back to my car more than a few hours after I left it. The weather had cooled and I was feeling so much better I decided to add on an extra mile. It really is amazing what we can cope with!!!
Hoping for rain from now on.13 -
2.75miles. 67.5 to go!7

The third day of June and I ain't done nuthin yet! Oh, but I made a ticker...yay me!
I spent the 1st (my birthday) chaperoning middle schoolers around Busch Gardens and had an awesome time. I walked around 6.5 miles over the course of the day, according to my companion's fitbit. I wonder if all the times we got loop-de-looped counted for anything, lol?
It's pouring today and I can't face the treadmill. So running will wait until tomorrow. My plan is a nice, long, slow run tomorrow--maybe 4 miles if I can push it that far. My first race since my 11/16 half marathon is a week from today. I am running a 5K with my sister and really looking forward to it!

Confession: I have not been as committed since early February. My miles are down, my weight is up, and I hid from social media. I am over 183 miles behind last years pace and I've DNS'd 2 marathons.
So about 2 weeks ago, I was looking back over some previous years training just to remind myself that it takes determination and a whole lot more effort than what I've been putting forth. I've rejoined the strava group. And I've committed to 200 running miles in June.
June Running:
6.1.18 - 8 miles.
6.2.18 - 11 miles.
Fall Running Events:
10.14.18 - Lake Tahoe Marathon
10.21.18 - Atlantic City Marathon
11.03.18 - Indianapolis Monumental Marathon
12.08.18 - Tucson Marathon

@polskagirl01 congrats on your PR! You crushed it! That was a good race strategy.
Nice pics @girlinahat and @_nikkiwolf_!1 -
Another 5.5km that this time actually recorded. A little cooler today.

Hey everyone. I saw on facebook that Rock N Roll San Diego had an active shooter. It sounds like the person was taken into custody. Runners were diverted. I didn't see anything about injuries. The article I read was like 2 paragraphs.3
-
6/1/2018 rest
6/2/2018 2.65 miles
6/3/2018 9.05 miles
Total 11.7 miles /80-85
I am going to need to get up earlier soon. I was dying by 8 am. I would have averaged under 14-minute miles but the last 3ish were slower because I kept taking walk breaks because of the heat. Slowly getting my speed back!2 -

Wow, that's scary. This article makes it sound like it might have been a suicide attempt unrelated to the marathon, and that the only injury is a cop who maybe shot themself accidentally.0 -

The NY Post is reporting that it was someone with a gun threatening to kill themselves three blocks away. I don't think it was someone targeting the race (thank goodness). https://nypost.com/2018/06/03/cops-respond-to-active-shooter-at-san-diego-marathon/1 -
Listening to press conference now. They said it started as a kidnapping in Chula Vista and ended near the race.
I know some runners were unable to finish their race, which sucks but I'm glad everyone is safe! Sadly, it's something we have to think about. I know the start of the Rock n Roll here has had snipers on the roofs for a few years.2 -
@polskagirl01 Great race! PR!!! And what a streak!
@girlinahat Glad your battery did not die out there! Phew! That reminds me I need to get some offline trail maps for my phone...
@5BeautifulDays5 Hey you are ahead of me... I think I have been in this thread for over a year now (I need to look someday) and still have not made a ticker0 -

June Running Update
Week 1: 18.1
Ran 2 of the 3 days in a short week. Saw podiatrist on Sat who confirmed I have nothing more than PF which I have being dealing with for the last 3 months. He is into fitness, ran in the past and while I had self diagnosed on google he did provide a provide some additional ideas on ways to help exercise and stretch to address the issue.3 -

Mostly I look for races that fit:
1) Appears not to be some shoddily run haphazard mess.
2) Close enough for easy ride
3) Somewhat reasonable fee
4) NOT ON A SUNDAY - I am a Pastor, so needs to be a Saturday race
5) Works around my current work schedule
And that is really about it. I need to find more races actually I like having one every 4-6 weeks to help keep training focused.

So today was hot and humid, but I went out anyways. My miles per week really suffered in May due to the two tappers, and house hunting. So this week is only like 26 miles or something. Ah well. Nothing to do but get back on track. 10 miles today is a good start back in that direction.4 -

midwesterner85 wrote: »Finally posting. I've decided to stop worrying about how slow I am and focus on building mileage for now. I'll worry about speed later. It is much easier for me to say that than to actually do that because I can be a bit competitive.
Here's what I need to keep reminding myself: "Comparison is the thief of joy" - I don't recall where I heard that, but it is perfectly right for me at this moment. So I can't forget it.
In May, I fell a few miles short of my 100 mile goal. In June, as I want to build mileage, I'm going to push the goal a bit higher and still hope to achieve it.
So the June goal is 116 miles. I did a 20K today and Garmin came up with 12.7 miles. I understand this because the road was wide enough and I definitely did not have straight lines across the shortest points. I didn't focus as much on speed and tried to enjoy it, which I did. Unfortunately, my BG ran low - down to 38 mg/dl around mile 5. After treating, I stabilized in the 40's and continued treating, but never really got out of the 40's until after I had been finished for awhile. Being stable is good enough that they didn't have to come pick me up off the road, but I'm sure it impacted my time. In fact, Garmin shows almost 9 min. of non-moving time. Mostly that was the 3 times I stopped to test BG, treat the low, and talk to the medics along the course.
Anyway, I understand why Garmin came up with 12.7 miles as a result of the side-ways movement and taking wide turns and such. So I'm counting the 12.7 miles.
Tomorrow, I'm going to head out to run a few miles with Don Muchow. He is an ultrarunner who also has type 1 diabetes... so basically someone who struggles with some of the same medical issues as me, and he runs a ton of miles. He's doing the Relay Iowa route starting tomorrow (339 miles?), and is doing it solo. I have to say that this man is a real inspiration for me, so I'm quite excited to finally meet him in person. Shameless plug: His website is https://t1determined.org/ if you want more details.
I did a bit more than 6 miles - about half with Don because I checked his tracker, parked, ran his route backwards a few miles until we found each other, and then continued on. We had some time to talk about insulin pumps (we use the same pump, but with very different settings), fueling both on running days and rest days, and some other topics. I wish we had more time together (I was too nervous about going much further because I would have to run back to my car from wherever I ended up). Still, it was fantastic to meet him and I'm now even more inspired... like I actually believe I can run longer distances. Maybe not 339 miles, but definitely I could work myself up to ultras. I know it will take a lot of time, but I actually believe it is possible!

Posted on Facebook, but wanted to share here.
8km (or so) hike. Got passed by a lot of trail runners. I have a new respect for those of you who do that, especially at the elevations I dealt with today. lol
