June 2018 Running
06/01: XT
06/02: 3.02 mile easy run, 8:51 pace + XT + strength
Total: 3.02 miles
Started the month off with a big fat zero (running) and 60 minutes on the spin bike. I was supposed to do some strength training in the evening, but I went out for drinks with my office mates and then watched Coco/drank a bottle of wine with my boyfriend so strength obviously didn't happen On the schedule for today was 3 miles easy, 30 min of cross-training, and yesterday's strength training. The weather was great today, in the high 60s and fairly overcast, so my average pace was a little on the fast side for "easy". Hopped on my spin bike immediately afterwards and cranked out 30 minutes before lunch. The strength training is scheduled for later this afternoon once I'm done digesting the giant bowl of ramen I had for lunch haha. Hope everyone is off to a great start this month!
Thanks for the "welcome back"s @katharmonic @lporter229 and @shanaber ! It's nice to see familiar faces around here
@MobyCarp I definitely recommend running Chicago if you can make it out here! I may be a little biased because I've lived in the city for 10 years and it was my first marathon, but it's a fabulous course and the spectators are amazing!
Upcoming Races
06/07: Strides for Peace 5K
06/24: Chicago 10K
07/22: Rock 'n' Roll Chicago 10K
10/07: Chicago Marathon2 -
No run for me today or tomorrow. I was exhausted last night after my long run andI think I am fighting off whatever virus my hubby is recovering from. Took some vitamin C before I went to bed and more today. So far feeling better but can tell my body is tired. Tomorrow will be a dog beach Sunday with another 50 or so Vizslas for Hobbes the Vizsla to romp, run and wrestle with!3

Race tonight so no run today. Feeling pretty lethargic, hopefully, that clears by race time. I have a 1-mile race, an hour break, then a 5k. Probably try to PR both, cause that is what I do, but it is not looking good right now.
Also not sure I will have time to properly warm up for the 1 mile. Why oh why did I ever agree to such a short race? 5Ks are hard enough.
Oh, the 5k is after dark, so that should be fun.5 -
Some one shared this book on my FB feed, and I though y'all would enjoy it..

10 km Manzer Avenue Climb. Struggled a bit outbound - legs still a little knackered from GC HM. So added a few walk breaks. Managed to push hard on the last Km which felt good. My watch said I had a new 1 km record @ 5:15/km, but I am sure I had a lower time last year. Don't remember deleting records or resetting my watch but stuff happens right.
Next weekend is our local club sponsored Heritage Run - a fund raiser for the local Museum.
Which means I don't get to run since I will be doing set-up/tear down/pictures and timing assistance.
Also we just received our new Race Start/Finish Arch - on my way to pick it up and do a trial inflation so I know what secondary items I need for nest weekend. I suspect I need a few small 3 gallon pails full of sand to act as Tie Down Wind anchors. Would hate to have it blow away at the first event and end up in the River.

It's already the 2nd June, and we are only at page 7? The heat must be slowing this thread down
The heat for sure slowed me down the last couple of days. Yesterday I started the run by an unplanned early afternoon run. Usually I'd still be sitting at my desk at 15:00, but there was a problem with my computing account, and I couldn't do anything. Good thing I keep running clothes in my office for "emergencies" , so I could head out for an hour and hope that the problem would be fixed during that time. It wasn't. And I got to enjoy the full glory of the sun - hot and humid. Maybe next time I stare longingly out the window during a meeting, I will remind myself that early afternoon is the hottest time of the day and not the ideal running time. Although even humid runs are better than some meetings
Today I overslept my alarm and missed the chance to run while it's cool. So I went with plan B: a short easy run in the mountains (*mostly* parallel to them, not up), where it's a bit cooler, and part of the way is shaded by trees. And the path I picked is super muddy, so I had to go nice and slow anyway. Gave me more time to enjoy the lovely view!
So far I'm at 14km for June. But I'm not setting a distance goal this month. Next Friday my brother is getting married, so I'll fly there on Thursday, and after that three weeks of summer vacation start! Camping / round trip through Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania I'll try to go running at least twice per week, but most runs are probably going to be short, 6km max, since I'm traveling with my sister and that's the longest distance she ran in the past year. So I'm not sure if I will get past 50km or 60km this month.7 -

6/1 14miles
6/2 6miles (walk)
My legs and right hip were still feeling a bit banged up from yesterday’s 14 miler so I decided to take a rest by walking my scheduled run. So 6 miles. My hip complained a little bit, but hopefully by Monday when I run again it will feel normal.
On a happy note I dropped some serious dough at the running store this afternoon. They are having their anniversary sale so everything is 20% off including already discounted stuff! I got my Brooks Glycerin last year’s model (discounted) and this year’s new model! Plus, 2 pair of Belaga socks which are my favorite!

Oh, I won a Strava contest! I never win anything- surprised the hell out of me. I entered the Runderwear challenge thing on a lark. Running specific underwear sounds a bit weird but i figured what the hell. Allegedly they are sending me free pairs. We will see... lol

Hit the trails for 7.82 miles this morning. The park doesn’t open until 8:30 which is much later than I like to get started but I was getting a little burnt out running the same streets so decided this would be a nice change. After entering the park and heading up the hill to the parking area there was a tree that had fallen across the road. By the time a ranger got there with a chain saw it was after 9 before we got started. Super humid day but it was a fun run with some people I had not seen in a while and some new running friends. Can’t have too many of those!5

Goal for June:
Continue PT for Plantar fasciitis
50 miles for June – run/walk depending on foot
Incorporate speed work on Tuesdays each week (also dependent upon foot is feeling)
06/01 Rest Day
06/02 - 2.80 - AKA 5K Race
Total: 2.80/50
This morning race we will call the 5K that really wasn’t a 5K. Partly my fault because we have to cross an overpass bridge on the route and run two blocks. People were turning around at the first block instead of second block. I followed the people in front of me and realized too late that it would be short the 5K distance. I didn’t think it was going to be 0.30 short and I ran until my Garmin said 2.80 after the finish line. Strava recorded a 2.70 run. Not sure why discrepancy. And it was 83 F at start with a feel like of 87 F, humidity 90%, dew point 76. I did have to run/walk the race.
Medal bling in photos.
@PastorVincent - good luck at your races tonight

Four hot, muggy miles this evening. I don’t think the abnormal eating/drinking from this past week’s vacation helped much either. It was slower than I’d like, but oh well. Hopefully, I will feel more energetic for tomorrow’s long run.

Upcoming Races:

In contrast to all the tales of running in the heat, I had 90 minutes of wet, wild and chilly weather this morning. Gale force winds and torrential showers and a rather cool 13 degrees C. On top of this, I’m still feeling the effects of skipping (jumping rope) for 10 minutes on Thursday - my calves are still protesting! Time to get the foam roller out and do some stretching (and possibly have a nap!).

Run was supposed to be a bit longer but around 9 km I hit a wall and got hubby to do an emergency extraction. I think it was (lack of) nutrition related as I hadn't eaten much since 11:30 am and started running at 5 pm. (Original plan was to run home from work but I wound up working 6 hours instead of 4 and had hubby get me and we ran some errands before he dropped me off at a trailhead.) Anyway, got home and had a freezie and then I felt fine.
I did get to explore a bit on a local path. Basically a paved route along a strip of green space, same area where I found trails a few weeks back. This time I decided to run the length of the path as I knew eventually it would connect with a main thoroughfare to home and I wanted to see what it was like.
Very pretty. I think I could run the while loop for longer runs as I estimate it's around 15-16km. I also plan to run the area from the trailhead and try out some of the dirt trails through the ravine but I wanted my trail shoes for that and I was wearing road shows today. Next time!
Also: I'm pretty sure I started C25K exactly a year ago and now I'm the kind of person who can just go out and run 6 miles whenever I feel like it. I think that's pretty cool.

Finally posting. I've decided to stop worrying about how slow I am and focus on building mileage for now. I'll worry about speed later. It is much easier for me to say that than to actually do that because I can be a bit competitive.
Here's what I need to keep reminding myself: "Comparison is the thief of joy" - I don't recall where I heard that, but it is perfectly right for me at this moment. So I can't forget it.
In May, I fell a few miles short of my 100 mile goal. In June, as I want to build mileage, I'm going to push the goal a bit higher and still hope to achieve it.
So the June goal is 116 miles. I did a 20K today and Garmin came up with 12.7 miles. I understand this because the road was wide enough and I definitely did not have straight lines across the shortest points. I didn't focus as much on speed and tried to enjoy it, which I did. Unfortunately, my BG ran low - down to 38 mg/dl around mile 5. After treating, I stabilized in the 40's and continued treating, but never really got out of the 40's until after I had been finished for awhile. Being stable is good enough that they didn't have to come pick me up off the road, but I'm sure it impacted my time. In fact, Garmin shows almost 9 min. of non-moving time. Mostly that was the 3 times I stopped to test BG, treat the low, and talk to the medics along the course.
Anyway, I understand why Garmin came up with 12.7 miles as a result of the side-ways movement and taking wide turns and such. So I'm counting the 12.7 miles.
Tomorrow, I'm going to head out to run a few miles with Don Muchow. He is an ultrarunner who also has type 1 diabetes... so basically someone who struggles with some of the same medical issues as me, and he runs a ton of miles. He's doing the Relay Iowa route starting tomorrow (339 miles?), and is doing it solo. I have to say that this man is a real inspiration for me, so I'm quite excited to finally meet him in person. Shameless plug: His website is https://t1determined.org/ if you want more details.

RACE REPORT
So the first race of the night was a 1 miler. I was thinking I would like to PR it, and then break that PR at the big 1 mile race in the fall. So I line up as close to the front as I can, but it was already two did deep with little kids. Not a prime starting location.
Gun goes off and I try to take off, only to stop two strides in to prevent running over a kid or 6. The race started with a lap around the track, and pretty much the full lap I was fighting to get around people. As we finished the lap we pass the timing clock and it read 1:36. Was that good? I could not be sure, the math part of my brain was not responding to calls, so I just pressed on and through the gate to the rest of the course. The course turned uphill here and that really thinned out the crowd. I held my pace up the hill and flew past more people.
Two minutes click by and my Garmin announces a pace of 7:20. That can NOT be right. I was doing at least 6 if not faster. I was sure of it. So I decide that the Garmin must have a bad GPS lock and I push on.
At the 1/2 mile point, there was a flippen water station. Really? Well, thankfully I am well ahead of the crowds at this point and fly right through without slowing down. Up another slight incline and round a bend. I am picking people off pretty good now, and still holding what feels like a solid PR pace. I was pretty sure I was maxed out for a mile run.
Make the final turn and back on to the track for the last 1/4 mile. I switch to gazelle style running on the flat track and pass one more person. Come around the bend and see the timing clock. 6:50somthing as I finish. Ugh. Way slower than I expected.
As my tradition, I went back found my wife and finished a second time with her. Our friend also finished and we were all talking about how slow our times were verse how the run felt. So I pull out my phone and check the weather. The dew point was very high, meaning the air was nearly 100% saturated with water. UGH. No wonder it felt so hard.
I checked the standings right before I left. NINTH OVERALL!! My first ever top ten finish! Also won my AG. I guess the nice thing about bad running weather, is all racers run in the same weather. Most of the top 10 was made up of high school kids, so not really surprising to lose to them at my age.
Well after that was the 5k. I did not yet know about my place in the 1 mile, but I now knew about the weather and lowered my expectations for the 5k. My goal fell from PR to just a solid finish. The field was very crowded at the start again, so when the gun went off I was once again fighting for position. Cleared the track and hit the first hill before people started dropping off. Pushed through 1 mile and more people started walking. By a mile and a half I was clear of most of the slower runners that should have started at the back and I settled into what felt like a reasonable race pace.
As I crossed two miles I was finally feeling warmed up for the first time all night there had not been time to warm up before either race but now I was ready. I picked the person in front of me, passed them, and picked the next. I played that game all the way to the finish. Offical time was 23:55. Not a PR, but give the conditions overall not bad.
Earned me 25th overall (out of 225) and 4th in AG. I think if I had a better start I could have done a little better, but it was not a night for a PR.
Tough weather, but I think I performed well despite it. Tomorrow I hope to get a real training run in, but unless this humidity breaks I am doomed.16 -
This is my first month to join this challenge. I have a habit of training for a run, running the race, and then I stop running for months and I have to start training all over again. I haven't run in over 2 months so I am going to start slow and hope that joining this challenge will at least keep me consistent. Goal for this month is 20 miles of running.
June 2--1.6

@midwesterner85 - Congratulations on your 20K even though it was a tough one! It is so exciting that you will get to meet someone who is such an inspiration.
@sarahthes - Love your trails!! Such beautiful areas to run!
@HonuNui - I can't imagine how hard Mother's Day must be! {{HUGS}}
What happened to the website? Hope your leg is all better from the fall and from slipping on the stairs! Are you far from the evacuation areas? I hate seeing all of the devastation to people's homes and to the once beautiful wild lands and beaches. I know it is all part of nature and rebuilding of land but it is still terrible. I hope you can get some running in to relieve some of that stress!
@PastorVincent - congratulations on the races in tough conditions!
@taxgirl1 - welcome to the group!0 -
I once ate a $5 bill in front of a fellow homeless person to make a point. Later I would regret that point. That friend never forgave me. Moral: sometimes your principals aren't very good friends.
@ctlaws44 That sounds like an interesting story.First run in June: C25k week 7 completed!
@fraukazi Yay, you!! Good luck in the final countdown to 5K!!DocMcStuffens wrote: »Hello everyone. I’m a runner and I’ve completed half-marathons as well as a one-day 28.3 mile hike. I am training for my first 50k in September and I’d love training advice.
Welcome, @DocMcStuffens ! I'm doing my first 50 km next weekend. Stay tuned!
Hugs, @HonuNui
@PastorVincent Bravo on 9th Overall in the 1 miler!!
And that book looks interesting, dammit! I was planning to call it quits on ultras when I've done my 50 km.

June 2018
Goal: My first 50 km run... and some handstands.
Runs
03 Jun – 16.0 km fast finish
Handstand practice
01 Jun – 5 minutes wall drills
02 Jun – 5 minutes wall drills
03 Jun – 4 minutes wall drills + 1 minute of crow poses
My 16 km with fast finish felt great this morning. Roll on the last week of taper! Feeling optimistic.
Might change the day I do my 50 km, as Friday morning looks pretty wet, whereas Sunday morning could be perfect conditions. That's the beauty part of not doing a race!7 -

Oh @HonuNui big hugs. Come here and rant at us whenever you like.
And please don’t fall down any more holes!!!!
A few years back I went to El Hierro, the end of the Western world as was, which subsequently suffered a big underwater volcanic eruption affecting most of the pristine dive sites. They have for the most part recovered well so there is hope for your snorkel sites, even given how sensitive corals are to temperature changes.1 -

0602-4k, 0603-5k, total-9k, goal-80k
Yesterday there was a 4k race around the block, organized by our (very) local gym. I think a total of maybe 20 actual runners showed up. However, as they were giving out glow in the dark sticks for every lap around the block, oodles of kids came over and swamped the entire area.
But a race is a race is a race and I ended up with not bad results considering it was so hot out there, even after sunset, that the SO thought I'd turned into a lobster.
Today was a run club event. I ran two 1500m time trials, PRed in one of them, and did a bunch of strength training. No telling how much I'll feel it tomorrow. Add that to all the warm up cool down and random running around I was going as one of the organizers of the event, I'm putting it in the 5k ballpark.
Upcoming races:
20181027 Mogan Ultra 30k
20181111 Shanghai Marathon (maybe)3 -
Very good race report @PastorVincent. Impressive top ten finish!
Sending hugs to you @HonuNui
Shout out to my twin brother who ran the Derby HM this morning and PR'd by more than 10 minutes. Way to go bro!
10 miles fast finish this morning. It was a fast finish by necessity. Had stomach ache all night, and big time bathroom issues when I woke up (TMI, I know). But couldn't get back to sleep, so got up and got ready to run, thinking the worst was behind me (sorry, pun intended).
Got to about mile 4 or 5, and the troubles started up again. No restroom between where I was and back to the house, so had to gut it out the whole way back. Figured if I stopped and walked it would be that much longer before I would be home, so stepped it up. That was a tough run.8 -

Running Room Magazine had this link to a study about " Wearable Technology for Runners ". It looks like they would like more data if anyone is interested in doing the questionnaire.
Caveat - one of the Purpose's of the study clearly states Canadian Runners, then in the questions they give the option of a alternate country. I wonder if that is because the majority of Grant Money comes from Canadian Sources. It's through the University of Calgary so should be reputable. Sometimes I'm not sure if it is a valid study or a marketing gimmick.
There was a note in the Running Room story that 88% of runners at events used wearable technology and over half of the runners said distance tracking and injury prevention were the main reasons.
@zdyb23456 A good day shopping Brooks and balega bling.
@PastorVincent The issue of people lining up will always be there. At my Trail HM we had 10-20 people who had never done an event so while sitting in the Bleachers chatting it was suggested they start further back so they didn't get trampled by the super competitive fast runners and if they hear " on your left " just keep running in a straight line and expect to get passed on your left. I said pretend you are driving on a high way - keep to the right side unless you are going to pass someone.
Like others I send Hugs, @HonuNui.
Asle sorry you lost some Snorkeling areas, they will return in time.0
