June goal: 75 miles
6/3: 6.5 miles
6.5/75 miles completed
Finally got some miles run in June. I usually take Friday and Saturday as rest days so when the 1st is on Friday I always feel like I am behind. I know I'm not because I plan rest days, but there is always a little bit of FOMO on the rest days.
Today was my first longish run since my HM. It's funny that 6.5 miles doesn't really feel that long anymore. It was a nice run. It was much cooler today and started out overcast. Then when the sun started coming out from the clouds I just tried to run in the shade as much as possible. I ran in the cemetery today and saw a big jackrabbit. I tried to get a picture but he was too fast and all i got was a blur. I see cottontail rabbits a lot when I am running, but so far I have only seen jackrabbits at the cemetery.
I enjoyed reading all the race reports and there were lots of good pictures too! I am on my phone so instead of tagging individuals I will just says congrats to all the racers and welcome to all the newbies!

The Niagara Falls Women's Half Marathon today was awesome. We lucked out with the weather as it had been looking like rain in the forecast but it held off, and it had cooled down majorly from the days before. About 65 degrees F at race time and mostly overcast so the sun wasn't in our eyes or beating down too much.
We rented a house within walking distance of the start, which was really convenient. The race course was pretty fantastic - we got to the falls within the first 2 miles and ran past and then turned around and ran back again. There was a lovely mist off the falls that felt great (would have felt even better at the end of the race, but I don't think they want to have that busy part of the parkway closed that long). The rest of the course was another out and back that was not as scenic as the falls (obviously) but did run along the Niagara River the whole way. The crowd was small but fun and the runners along the course were so great. They put everyone's first name on the bibs in big letters so it was so fun to hear people cheer for you personally. And the out and back course let us see the other runners multiple times and cheer for them. Kathrine Switzer (first woman to run with a bib in the Boston Marathon) was there and I feel like she and I are friends now after seeing her a few weeks ago at the Right to Run race, and several times here. We talked to her for quite a while at the expo and she signed our bibs. Then she high-fived us at the start and at one point along the course, plus she hugged me at the finish! So awesome. The theme of the race was Fearless, Inspiring, Empowered - which was on the medals. And there were a lot of fearless women there.
I started out the race with no particular goal. I went with 4 other women and 1 went ahead towards the front (and finished with an incredible time and 3rd in her age group), and 2 were planning to go really slowly due to injury. The other woman and I started together and ended up running the whole race together even though she stopped twice for a bathroom break and shoe fix - but caught back up to me both times. I ended up with my second fastest time for a half, but it was within 30 seconds of the next two - I can't believe I've done 3 with nearly identical times. I kept a pretty consistent pace even though I was monitoring it far less often than I usually do, and my last mile was the fastest. I'm like a horse who wants to get back to the barn in that last mile.
So fun overall, would definitely do this race again. Exhausting though, and after the drive back home and a nice little soak in lavender epsom salts (which we got in our swag bag), I'm crawling into bed.

RACE RECAP!!! Yesterday was the Solidarity Half Marathon from Świdnik to Lublin, Poland. I had a blast!
Transportation to the start line was 3 city buses packed solidly with runners. I couldn't even see another female (running is still a male-dominated sport here), and I spent the ride trying to inconspicuously breathe the fresh air coming from the air conditioner above where I was standing. What a relief when those doors finally opened!
It has been hot and humid all week, and that's what we were expecting, but in a wonderful turn of events, we got what was - in my opinion - ideal running weather instead, overcast with some rain to cool us off a little. There was a short period of torrential downpour, but honestly I was having the time of my life at that point and loved it.
My only time goal was to be faster than my halfway split from the marathon 3 weeks ago, so I lined up even further back than the zone I was supposed to be in. It still felt like everyone was passing me in the first 4k though. I told myself that if I went slowly enough at the beginning, I could "play" later, and made mental notes of some of the people who were passing me, as I knew I would see many of them again. Around the 4k mark it started to even out, and then just got better and better from there. There were a few people who would pass me, then slow down, and I'd just keep going at my comfortable pace and would pass them again later, only to have them "rally" (6k into a half marathon?) and pass me again. One girl was doing a run-walk thing, and one guy in particular didn't seem to want me to be ahead of him. I started to get tired of seeing the same people over and over, so I tried this thing where I would wait behind them until I felt ready, then put myself to the side but about 2 steps ahead of them, like I was giving them space but trying to pass them - only I would stay 2 steps ahead, no matter how much they sped up. It was interesting to me to see how hard they would work when it looked like someone was passing them (they weren't doing that when I was a couple meters behind them), and the pace was reasonable enough that I knew I could hold it for miles... they however, couldn't, so I just waited and finally they'd give up, and I wouldn't see them again. Then I could focus on the next person ahead of me - you know, the ones I knew I'd see again later?! Maybe I was having too much fun - Nope! It's called a RACE(!), even for those of us who are closer to the back than the front! And this wasn't a full marathon, I was running the whole thing and not feeling defeated and "bad at running", like I did just a few weeks ago. At the 9k I realized I was clearly doing a lot more passing than being passed, and I don't recall anyone catching me after about the 14k mark!
I am not fast, but I ran a negative split, felt strong the whole way, finished well, and got a PR by over 2 minutes! It's even more of a victory for me because my PR was on a flat course in even better weather (night race), and yesterday's race was on a course that the announcer said was "too hard for PR's". I felt so good, I biked the whole way back downtown later when I missed my ride and didn't want to wait for a bus.
The half marathon is definitely my favorite distance. Oh, and I can check off June for my one-HM-a-month streak. That makes 11 months so far!
Upcoming races:
6/2 Solidarność Half Marathon-DONE!
6/30 Silesian Highland [trail] Half Marathon
7/16 CityTrail OnTour 5k
Awesome race!! Haha great strategy!
Hey, my HM streak is 11 months too!
Several things you've posted have made me think you are my running twin, and this just confirms it! Congrats on the streak2 -
Congrats @katharmonic! Sounds like you did great with pacing, and how fun that you got to hang out with Kathrine Switzer!0

June 1 – 9.51 miles (4.5 miles of hill repeats)
June 2 – 7.82 miles (trails)
June 4 – 5.02 miles
@katharmonic – How cool that you saw Katherine Switzer again! I read her book this past winter. Her focus and determination when she was training for Boston and other marathons was phenomenal! Congratulations on your race!
@ddmom0811 – Red Robin is giving all teachers a free meal tomorrow. You should see if KC has one – you deserve it!
Congratulations @midwesterner85, @noblsheep, @polskagirl01, @PastorVincent and @Scott6255’s brother on your races this weekend also!
@HonuNui – more hugs coming your way because, let’s face it, can you ever have too many?
It was amazingly cool at 5:00 am this morning. After days and days of rain I think it has finally cooled the air and moved out. Loved all the pictures posted this weekend from all around the world!

June 16 – Run the Gate 5K
September 7-8 – Blue Ridge Relay
October 20 – Cherokee Harvest Half Marathon
November 11 – Rock n Roll Vegas Half Marathon

I'm taking a rest day today. I got stung three time yesterday in the leg even though I was able to get 3.5 miles in after the stings yesterday. Today my leg is sore and swollen.

I want to run at least 20 days of June. I’ll shoot for 50 Miles for the total mileage.5

Today's goal was to run 2 miles without stopping. I ran 2.5. My pace is still atrocious but I'll work on that once I get the distance back on track.
Today is also yoga day after work. For anyone that's thinking of trying yoga, I highly recommend an app called Down Dog. It's free (although there is also a pro version with a few extras), and you can set what level you want (beginner, intermediate, etc.) and how long you want to go and it gives you a different session every time to fit your criteria. I find it challenging, but in a very good way, and I always feel great afterward. Anyway, give it a try!
Have a good week everyone!12 -

ETA: Something I've been thinking about - outside of the big bucket list races, how do people choose what to participate in? Right now I'm just doing the bucket list thing because I don't know if racing is a thing I'm going to enjoy or not, but in the event I do, there seem to be an awful lot of options out there, and I'm kind of uncomfortable with some of the messaging associated with some of the races. The two I'm registered for are both established events put on by the same organization with exists just to put on these races. But I'm a little overwhelmed by all the other options out there and am not sure about some of the "causes" either or entirely clear on what my registration fees are going towards. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
I've run 18 1/2 marathons and this is my criteria: (1) Bling - I'm a sucker for a great medal, (2) beautiful scenery, (3) sense of humor, and (4) an excuse to go visit someplace.
Also: I'm pretty sure I started C25K exactly a year ago and now I'm the kind of person who can just go out and run 6 miles whenever I feel like it. I think that's pretty cool.
That is VERY cool.
Yesterday I was wondering why my quads hurt - today I had a "duh" moment - last time I ran was March. Pretty slow going - but right now I'm just going to concentrate on building back up my miles and next month I'll worry about speed.

This morning's "plan" was 20 mins, was supposed to be a "Run 1 min, walk 90 seconds". Well, I was still debating about doing that, or just running even as I was heading out this morning @ 0440. So I start running. Then I was trying to get the light back on the watch to see what time I'm at, not having my glasses on, and next thing I know, I'm lapping & lapping, hitting screens I couldn't see...So I stop, discard whatever the farkle I had poked around to, reset the watch, and just start running. Decide to take a different route, thinking "might have made a mistake, might be too long?" but just kept going. Only ended up 4 mins longer than my original plan time, a few walks and all in all, not too bad.
And I've been living dreamily through everyone's pictures here. Here in Flori-duh its hot. And flat. Oh, and hot. Humid, too. Did I mention flat and hot?

@MegaMooseEsq - I have run a lot of races, around 25 HMs and a hand full of 5 and 10Ks in the last 6 years. I tend to find races I like and rerun them, especially the bigger races. Most of the races have 'legacy clubs' you are automatically part of once you have run them a few times with extra perks and gifts. I received a really nice legacy jacket from a holiday race I like to run in San Diego. We have made family events out of going to SF for the race there to visit friends and just enjoy the city. I also love the atmosphere of that race so much. It has 'companion' races local to me here in So Cal and I have run one of those, Surf City, almost as many times as SF. You get an extra medal if you do both consecutively. The other companion race is also local to me but in the summer and while along the coast it is just too hot here then.
For smaller races I look to see who the RD is and if the charity is legit and then at the course and when it is run. Again if it is in late June- August here and doesn't start at 6am I probably won't run it. The cost is also a factor but I find if I enter early I can usually get a pretty steep discount and for the smaller races it just depends on what I am willing to pay at the time.
Great race reports @polskagirl01, and @katharmonic!
@polskagirl01 - I love that you enjoyed your race so much. Great job too on keeping that even pace.
@katharmonic - Running a Women's race can be so fun sometimes just for the sense of community!
@_nikkiwolf_ and @polskagirl01 - you both picked tough places to run this weekend! Wow!!2 -
@dreamer12151 Grew up in Florida until I was about eleven. Even today I get excited about hills and mountains and snow.4

Ok so I'm not an outside runner but I do run on my elliptical (is that still running?) However, my daughter plans to do Girls on the Run this fall. She has done it in the past but her dad ran the 5k with her because I simply didn't feel like I could do it. My goal is to run (ok let's be honest...jog/walk maybe run a bit) it with her this fall.
Since October 2017 I have lost 48 lbs and I am on my way to my overall goal of 90 lbs lost.
This will be my goal to keep me motivated over the summer. I'm going to start with the elliptical twice a week for a total of 10 miles. I also plan to get outside for a walk/jog at least once a week. By the end of June my plan is to increase my outside "runs" to twice a week. I'm setting a monthly goal of 50 miles.14 -

06/03: 14.01 mile long run, 9:09 pace
06/04: 3.01 mile easy run, 9:19 pace + XT + strength
Total: 20.04 miles
Yesterday was my first long run of marathon training, 14 miles. I seemed to have forgotten how far 14 miles really is haha because it felt way longer than I remembered! Monday's (day after LR) are usually rest days, but I have a 5K this thursday so I switched wednesday's workouts to today so that I can take the day before the race off. So I got up early this morning to get in another 3 mile easy run (with very sore calves from yesterday's LR!). This evening I'll do 30-45 minutes on the spin bike and strength training (for real this time!).
Upcoming Races
06/07: Strides for Peace 5K
06/24: Chicago 10K
07/22: Rock 'n' Roll Chicago 10K
10/07: Chicago Marathon

Changing over to my new shoes.....so love new shoes! These will hopefully last a couple of months. I put a LOT of miles on this pair I am retiring today.6 -
@AlphaHowls you are amazing! You are like the Energizer bunny
@conatser9 you are one tough cookie to complete 3.5 miles after being stung (bee?, wasp?). But I guess that was the fastest way to get home1
