Just found out I get to go with hubby on his business trip to Santa Monica later this month. I'll get two days of running on the strand. It's recovery week after a HM, so I can do some nice, easy miles on the strand. It's walking distance from our hotel.9

6/1 14miles
6/2 6miles (walk)
6/3 rest
6/4 6.71miles
6/5 8miles
Felt great today! The weather was warm, but not muggy. I did 8 miles at an average pace of 9:30. I didn’t even take water with me and I felt ok. I was thirsty by the end, but I made it back to the car ok. Thought about stopping at McDonalds and asking for a cup of ice water, but didn’t know if they’d want me to buy something too.

Here, restaurants are required by law to give ice water, but they don't have to give it in a certain sized cup. So ice water cups are about the size of a Dixie cup. And there's no law that says the restaurant has to be pleasant about it! They tend to give you the stank eye when you walk in off the street and ask for ice, which I used to do a lot as a teen who had to walk in the heat.1 -
rheddmobile wrote: »@MegaMooseEsq I don't like Coppertone Sport either - although it's not the smell, it's the stickiness that bothers me. Since you mentioned it I picked up the Neutrogena Cooldry and turns out I like it much better and so far it doesn't seem to give me heat rash, which is a problem I have with most lotion sunscreens. Thanks for the recommendation!
5k through the woods for my husband and me, heat was almost tolerable since the humidity was low. Tomorrow we're under an Orange Air Quality alert so I'm glad we got a run in today. I need to start running before the sun comes up but when I get up that early, I collapse at about 8 pm and don't get anything done!
Hey cool, you’re welcome! Neutrogena makes a stick sunscreen that I use on my face but is a pain to apply more broadly, so when I ran out of lotion (which ive never been good about applying) I tried their spray and was surprised how quickly the sticky feel fades. I was hoping for a less expensive alternative in the Coppertone but that experiment was not a success. The smell was the worst for me, but I didn’t love the stickiness either.1 -
6/5 ran 2 miles on elliptical. Not much but it's a start.5

I admire all you early morning runners. Maybe someday, but I'm fortunate my work schedule does not require the 4-5 am start that some of you need.
I also use Neutrogena sunscreen, the ultra-sheer dry touch spray and lotion. I really like it. I have also tried the drug store brand that's basically the same thing and been happy with it. I keep the spray in my car so I can spray down before any run.

First night of marathon training tonight, officially if not in actual intensity. I will actually usually go on Wednesday nights but tomorrow I have the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge, so I swapped to the other group across town. I just did a base run instead of the workout also due to just finishing the HM on Sunday and having the race tomorrow night - although I'm not sure I'll run that one hard either. The last thing I want to do is injure myself at the start of training. Marathon is 20 weeks and 5 days away (I promise I am not planning to count down every day).
We are having unseasonably cool weather here - not to rub it in to those with 90-100 temps but it was chilly today with a high of only 62 F. With the wind tonight I was cold before we started running and contemplated wearing gloves!
Upcoming races:
6/6/18 JP Morgan Corporate Challenge (3.5 mile), Syracuse NY
7/8/18 Boilermaker 15K, Utica NY
8/19/18 Falmouth Road Race (7 miles), Falmouth, MA
8/26/18 18.12 Challenge, Sackets Harbor, NY??? (not yet signed up)
10/28/18 Marine Corps Marathon, Arlington VA

I used coppertone sport and have never noticed a smell. Although I've had it for a few years and the scent formula may have changed. I typically use banana boat dry argan oil spf 8. Face I have banana boat active 100, or cetaphil 50 (not active, but does fine for an hour). I'm out of the coppertone, so I'll make sure to get bull frog next time to avoid and stinkums.
4 am? Y'all. I don't have to be up and gone tomorrow until 11am. No way I'll even consider getting a run in before 4pm. although being world running day, I may reconsider. Especially since I over ate today... Now to pop over an confess all my food sins..2 -
6/1 - CROSS (walk, yoga)
6/2 - 10 miles
6/3 - REST
6/4 - 5.3 (trail)

@sarahthes Here's one for you in Edmonton The NERD Run - Insert Pun Here.
Its actually for what I consider a good cause " N.E.R.D. stands for Neuroscience Education, Research and Discovery. Our run is a resounding success with over 300 people attending in 2017 "
So to me that covers everything related to the Brain.
@shanaber; I like the events that have Legacy clubs/benefits that acknowledge repeat athlete's.
@polskagirl01 - I love your race strategy. That is very similar to what I do. Sit back and hold a steady pace for the first half and then start the game of Pick off the next athlete in front of me in the 2nd half until I hit the group that are matched to my pace.
@MobyCarp Tangents are a beautiful thing when you get them right. Its something I practice on our Riverbank trails which have lots of S bends. I learned the concept from the Jasper HM 3 years ago. A lady caught up to me at about 8km and ran with me for a while. She would fade from side to side and mentioned that she does Ultra's and it makes a huge difference when doing those distances. she also ran on the Pine Duff along the edge of the Trail as it was softer on the feet. Lesson's Learned.
@AlphaHowls You are definitely a Premium Member in the Shoe Destroyer club. Enjoy the new ones.PastorVincent wrote: »

13 km Judah Hill Climb. About 3 km along the Riverbank Trails then a 3.5 km climb 220m elevation.
Had to drop into a walk in the steepest part 18% grade a real challenge. Still Strava says I am trending faster 20s/km avg over the distance. On the return leg I managed to do a fast finish - km 11 & 12 @ 6:01/km and km 13 @ 5:32/km. Which for me is flying.
06/02 10.02 km- 10.02km - 130.0 km - YTD 430.48km Manzer Ave Climb

I had to chuckle at this - years ago I had a good friend ask me to help her train for a 1/2 marathon. However, when I'd say "let's meet (wherever) and run 3 miles" she'd respond "I don't want to run there." When I'd say, "we're going to run as fast as we can to that park bench - go!" - I'd get to the bench, look around and she'd be walking and tell me "I didn't feel like doing that." When we did run - all she did was tell me how much she hated running. We did finish a 1/2 together - she asked me to do another with her - but I declined because I just couldn't handle all the negativity. However - she is still one of my BEST friends. Go figure.

Today's goal: 2.5 miles
Actual mileage: 3.2 miles
Forgot how it feels once I get a couple miles in and everything starts feeling better and easier.
Unfortunately, getting up super early to run is making me absolutely exhausted in the evenings. Yoga is suffering because of that. But I've only been at the morning workout thing a little over a week, so perhaps I just need some time to adjust.4 -
Sorry all that I’m not commenting, but I am reading and hitting like. I’m on a government computer (sshhh) sitting in cubicle land with my back to everyone who walks by so it makes it hard to comment the way I want to. Everyone is doing awesome though.

6/6 - rest day ha ha 8 whole miles I need a rest

Happy Global Running Day. I may have to go out after work for a mile so I can say I ran today. Last year I did a big run with Fleet Feet not sure why we didn’t sign up this year, oh well Skip gets to work at FF while most of the crew is running ha ha
@fitoverfortymom that sounds awesome!
@zdyb23456 McDonald’s would have given you a cup for water next time stop in
@juliet3455 wow that is some elevation great job. Skip and I were at the Grand Canyon for vacation a week or so ago and trying to run at 8,000 feet of elevation was a killer. We did lots of hiking though, also a killer coming back UP the canyon ha ha
@Teresa502 super picture – great job ladies! Please tell me that was before you ran, no one should look that good after a run ha ha
@mbaker566 she is precious!
I hope you don't mind my usual brag on my girl ha ha. Skip graduated on May 22nd with honors. I'm so proud of her! I'm going to miss my running buddy when she goes off to school.
My dear friend is from Hawaii and her parents came in for graduation and her mom made this for Skip.

It takes a little while to get used to early mornings, eventually your body will start getting tired a bit earlier, and you'll go to sleep earlier, but probably not so early it messes with your yoga.
My problem now is that I now longer sleep in at weekends when I want to (that's also to do with the Saturday construction work which they do from 7 until 9).

Give it at least a month before you make any decision on it. A month of doing it regularly.0 -
@Azercord No personal experience, but it sounds like an interesting problem, so I spend some time during my run this morning thinking about it
So you are at work for 3.5 weeks, then off 2.5 weeks, and can run about 3 times/week while at work.
I would probably look for a training plan with five runs per week, and then spread two weeks over a longer time (breaking up the long run in 2 days, if possible back-to-back), then make sure to get at least three long runs in the 18 days you are off.
e.g. the training plans week 1, day 1-3 in the first week you're at work,
w1 day 4,5(part 1 and 2) your second work week,
w2 day 1-3 in the third week,
w2 day 4,5 in the fourth week (the long run should already be during your "off time", so no need to break it into parts,
week 3 and 4 of the training plan as scheduled.
Of course this way you will need four weeks to complete six weeks from the training plan. But if you have no time for ultra-training long runs during the working times, and don't want to risk doing too much during your off time, there might not be many other ways. I suppose you could also drop one high intensity workout during your off weeks and try to squeeze three training plan weeks into two that way.
In any case, you can also think about doing some strength training shortly before your runs, to simulate the feeling of running on tired legs that you would have if you were following a regular ultra training plan without modification.
@Teresa502 Awesome photo! I can't belive you know so many people who are crazy enough to run at 5am
@skippygirlsmom The photos of Skip are all brilliant. You have every right to be proud of her!
@juliet3455 You've got some really nice hills where you are running
I didn't even know today was "Global running day" until checking in here. Now I'm really glad I decided to run to work today5 -
June goal: 75 miles
6/3: 6.5 miles
6/5: 4.3 miles
6/6: 4.5 miles
15.3/75 miles completed
Happy Global Running Day! This morning I ran 4.5 miles. It was a beautiful morning to run. I have never been a morning person (and I still don't think I really am), but I am enjoying getting up and running before the heat of the day. It is also nice that after work I have the afternoon free and can just hang out with my husband. I'm lucky that I don't have to be at work until 8:30 and my office is only 2 miles from my house, so as long as I am done with my run by about 6:50 I have plenty of time for about 30/35 minutes of yoga and a quick shower and still have time to get ready for work. So I don't have to get up quite as early as some of you morning runners do. Last summer I did most of my runs at lunchtime or in the evening after 8. That was hard though because I really only have about 30 minutes to run at lunch and I'm a slow runner. And if I run too late in the evening I have problems because I need to hydrate and I don't like to drink that much water too close to bedtime or I will be up all night. I really resisted getting up early to run, but this summer I am glad I finally did it.
@skippygirlsmom Congrats to Skip!
2018 races:
5/19/18: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - 2:43:59.7. - 2nd place AG
11/10/18: Wags & Whiskers 5K3 -
Early runs: I work a rotating schedule with 12 hour shifts, so if I have a run planned on a work day, I have to be up by 0430-0440 to get it in before I have to be on the job @ 0645, because, being honest, I know I COULD run after work (7:45pm ish) but in reality, it just ain't gonna happen! On my days off I get to sleep in a bit, but Fl weather is like Hell's oven, so it's getting tougher to run later in the day.
And I didn't even know it was Runner's Day today! Yippee!
6/4 - 1.64 miles
6/6 - 1.55 miles (3.19 total)1 -
6/1 = 4 miles
6/2 = 5.5 miles
6/3 = 10 miles
6/4 = 3 miles
6/5 = forced rest day (stupid work)
6/6 = 13 miles
Global running day HM this morning. I had to change up my running route today. A sexual predator attacked someone on my regular running route last week. They still have not caught him. The police have been patrolling the trails during the morning but I had to start out an hour before dawn if I wanted to get in 13 before the heat ramped up. I switched to running on busy roads which meant more traffic, crosswalks, and less shade. Stupid jerk is making me paranoid. I hope his *kitten* rots and falls off.
150 goal miles / 35.5 miles complete
Upcoming Races (so far):
6/23/2018 -Fit Foodie 5k
10/10/2018 -Tough Mudder Half
