Thanks for the feedback on how to pick races, everyone! I definitely feel like I've got a better sense of how to sort through my options. June is a crazy busy month so chances are I won't have time to do anything until the 4th of July race, but I might want to add some in between that and the race in October. I love your answer about bling, @biketheworld. One of the series I've been looking at is the Brewery Running Series, and I felt a little silly that the idea of collecting custom pint glasses had as strong an appeal to me as it did - glad I'm not the only one to be tempted by swag! The runs are all later in the day than I'd like, though, so we'll see.
Today's run was both awesome and stinky. Awesome because I went three miles and felt like an amazing, speedy machine the whole time - my first long run of the year was 2.67 miles and that was a personal best at the time, now 3 miles is just an easy Tuesday! Stinky because I tried a new brand of spray sunscreen and stank up myself and my entryway something fierce. Sorry Coppertone Sport, I can see why you're a quarter of the cost of the Neutrogena CoolDry I actually find tolerable. Guess I've got to make a run to the drug store before tomorrow AM.
But back to the awesome side: I ran a negative split, my average pace was only a second over my current PR (10'44"), and my last full mile was 10'30", which ties my PR for fastest mile. It feels a little silly to care about PRs since I'm new enough that they come pretty fast these days, but dang it, who cares! As Nicki Minaj puts it halfway through my long run soundtrack, I'm the best!

6/1-rest day
6/2-6 miles (hot and humid)
6/3-7 miles (mix of trail and paved)
6/4-rest day
6/5-7 miles total including 4X1000m speed work and strides
I had a great run this morning. The past two days have been near perfect weather with temps in the 70s and zero humidity. This morning I was meeting some folks from my old running group for a track work out at 5AM. The track is 2 miles from my house, so I used the run there as my warm up. Since I wouldn't need to do the warm-up mile with them, I headed out at 4:45. The moon was bright and the sky was crystal clear. I didn't see a car until I hit the busy intersection near the school. It was perfect.
Since I did not know the workout in advance, I did not program my Garmin for intervals and all of my data ended up getting jacked up. I thought I had stopped it when I got to the track and was starting it on the first interval, but it was actually on autopause so instead of starting it, I stopped it. Ugh. Long story short, Garmin did not record my first interval. After that blunder, it was hard for me to keep track of my pace with math and it was still too dark to see the Garmin without the backlight on, so I was just running and trying to keep up with the pack. Except most of these folks are fast. Like super fast. I struggled to keep up and my nagging hamstring was on fire. Finally, on the last interval, I just allowed myself to fall back. I knew I was probably slower than HM pace at that point, but I was hurting. When I looked ta the data after my run, I understood why. Most of our intervals were at a sub 7 pace. That is faster than 5K pace for me. My reward for a hard workout done was a cool down jog to Starbucks for my morning coffee and a nice sunrise walk home. Throw in a pleasant walk with the dog after my shower, and it was the perfect start to the day.15 -

June goal: 75 miles
6/3: 6.5 miles
6/5: 4.3 miles
6.5/75 miles completed
I ran 4.3 miles this morning. The temperature wasn't too bad, but the humidity was awful. I was soaked when I got home and actually had a couple of gnats stuck to my face. Overall though I enjoyed the run.

@lporter229 - your description of getting up at 4:45 and your awesome running start to your day is motivating me to get up earlier and get my day started earlier! We'll see if I can really do it!5
-
@shanaber- I don't usually run in the mornings, but days like today make me want to start!3
-
On the topic of morning runs - I'm not a morning person at all. But as we are now in the 90F+ season for afternoons, I may have to start.
ETA: I need to be at work by 7:15am, so to run + shower in the morning, I need to wake up before sunrise.5 -
Yep, same situation down here in Texas. Temps over 100F, so I get up around 4am so I am running by 5am (takes me a while to get going in the morning ) I am usually at work by 7am.
At the start of the summer, I really dreaded getting up that early, but a couple weeks into it, I have grown accustomed to it, and it isn't that bad. Make you feel like you have accomplished something before most people are even out of bed.11 -
I somewhat reluctantly woke up at 5:15 am to meet a friend who wants to start running. We did C25K week 1 day 1 together, and she called me "coach" I logged it as "walking" to keep it separate from my own training, and won't be counting it in my monthly totals until later in the plan when there's more running. I hope I can be a good encouragement to her, and that she'll stick with it. I really think the first couple months of running are the hardest. Then you get addicted, in a good way.
After she went home I went off for a 5k+ run with some trails and a couple hills, keeping it at a fast-ish pace. I wanted to go longer, but ran out of time. Then this evening I got in another 4k+ run coming home from the kiddo's swim lessons. It was a really good workout, with fast intervals, trails, pushing a kid on his bike up a single-track trail hill and then we got to the road and had beat some of his classmates (in a car!!!) there, so he had a car full of girls yelling and waving as they drove by. Then there was the kilometer-long hill, after which I suggested he stop and climb his favorite tree beside the school (mainly so I could catch my breath). I love our adventures. The only drawback was that the foliage along the trail has grown over the past 2 weeks, and the stinging nettles got us both. It was worth it, though.
Upcoming races:
6/30 Silesian Highland [trail] Half Marathon
7/16 CityTrail OnTour 5k17 -
i've come to the realization i'm not a morning person. so afternoon and late night runs. for hot days i have a frozen water bottle and we loop back for it. we=me and the dogs
edit:
hypersomnia and early days are bad for work productivity3 -
@polskagirl01 - Helping a friend to start running and having fun with your kiddo on a run sounds like a fantastic day to me too. Glad to hear it was worth the nettles!2

Because of various circumstances, I have had to shift my workouts to the morning before work. I won't go into detail here, but it's the best thing for my mental health to get it done before work.
I am NOT a morning person, so getting up early is very tough. Luckily I have a fiance to prepare my chai and wake me up.
Today was a walk day. 3 miles in the AM and a couple additional breaks to get more steps during the day. I will also be doing yoga after work. (Doing yoga after work is also good for my mental health!)
Tomorrow will be a running day, and my goal will be 2.5 miles again.13 -
2.25miles today. 62.5 to go. Today I was just not feeling it, but got at least 2 miles in so I'm happy.5
-
6/1 - CROSS (walk, yoga)
6/2 - 10 miles
6/3 - REST
6/4 - 5.3 (trail)
Monday night soccer clinics mean trail time! It was a 3 miler on the schedule, but I did the full loop on one of my favorite trails near my son's practice field. I haven't been on a proper trail run since April, so this felt so good! I'm excited for my road HM to be done on the 23rd so I can switch back to more trails.
I'll run tonight again. Maybe 3 or maybe 5. It's supposed to be a 5 mile pace run which I desperately need. The extra miles probably won't hurt anything and I can take it easy tomorrow.

I'm also in Texas. Current temp per my outdoor thermometer (in the shade): 102. Fun times.1 -

Hang on to that fiance of yours My husband's response to the alarm going off at 4:30 AM was "You're insane".
@fitoverfortymom - I feel very much the same about trails right now. Wednesdays and Sundays are my trail days and I find myself looking forward to those days all week.
BTW, it's now 2:30 and I am suddenly reminded why I don't usually run in the morning...zzzzzz...4 -

My fiance is usually up by 5:30, even on weekends. He's weird that way.0 -

@lporter229, @RespectTheKitty, @polskagirl01, @midwesterner85: High five and lots of respect to anyone who's managing to get up early even though they struggle with mornings! I'm fine in the morning so long as I get enough sleep and it's still a drag getting out of bed sometimes - I don't know if I could do it if I genuinely wasn't a morning person. I feel very grateful this isn't the case as the weather in the early morning has been quite a lot cooler than the rest of the day - I grew up in California and it's really strange to me that it very often doesn't cool off after dark in the Midwest until quite late into the night/morning.1

@MegaMooseEsq I don't like Coppertone Sport either - although it's not the smell, it's the stickiness that bothers me. Since you mentioned it I picked up the Neutrogena Cooldry and turns out I like it much better and so far it doesn't seem to give me heat rash, which is a problem I have with most lotion sunscreens. Thanks for the recommendation!
5k through the woods for my husband and me, heat was almost tolerable since the humidity was low. Tomorrow we're under an Orange Air Quality alert so I'm glad we got a run in today. I need to start running before the sun comes up but when I get up that early, I collapse at about 8 pm and don't get anything done!

Anyone planning to run on June 6, 2018 for Global Running Day?

That's what I do. I get up at 4am to do my runs.3 -

It was 110 yesterday. Last Sunday I was dying by 8 am heat. I get up at 4am, out the doir between 415 and 430 and am at work at 7 am.
Its hard. I feel more tired during the day but also more content. And on my rest days I feel off not running. When I get to longer workouts during the week not sure what I will do. I can get in up to 45 minutes.1 -
@bride001 I was going to take a rest day tomorrow but I’m going to push it off until
Thursday and run tomorrow.3
