The issue with keto is that people choose it by default as their first attempt of losing weight, not because it's their personal preference, but based on hearsay. I would be curious to know what is the percentage of people who stick with keto for more than 2 years.
I was thinking about this thread while the system was under repair. Paleo/primal and all of the rest of it. If only 5% of dieters can maintain after 5 years, in that 95% that are starting over on a another diet are paleo people who've eaten it all back. You won't hear from them.6 -
I am creating the next fad diet with my friend. She is Indian, so she will be the mystical face of our new "secrets of India" diet. It will involve chanting and chakras.
Obviously, you will be told that your weight is not your fault, because your chakras are misaligned.

It'll probably come around again in some form or another as all of the fads do. A few years ago I'd see lots of magazines and cookbooks and whatnot at the grocery checkout...not so much these days...mostly keto stuff right now.1

And some magical drink--I was at a bookstore once with a guy at a card table in the back selling tiny cups of "Chakra-Clearing Water". One sip and all your ills would be cured! Just ignore that annoying "distilled water" label on the plastic gallon jug sitting next to him.....3 -

I did a paleo/primal/keto/IF combo/BPC. I ate all of the fat, fat, fat. Fat is where it's at. I ate 85% fat and 10% protein and 5% carbs in the form of a frozen spinach ball and ball of wax.
When you come off the keto high, do you really believe you can eat 85% for the rest of your life to maintain what you are doing now. Can I get a witness, when you come off this protocol your body will stack the weight back on like pancakes and taking it off again will be as slow as molasses. Unless you throw yourself into another cycle of keto for giant month hunks of time but with each keto excursion the heart grows faint.
You wake up one day and realize that this cannot go on forever. There are some people here that have garnered respect from everybody. They are not playing games but genuinely want to get the truth out there. Keto is a temporary fix. Start thinking about a strategy that will help keep the positive side effects you like now with your weight and muscle mass.
So much of paleo is absolute malarkey. During the long winter months, the tribes on the plains, northern Canada and elsewhere lived with about 9 months of snow. Lakes and rivers were frozen. There was no fishing going on and hunting for wildgame during blizzards and -40 below temps were a real hardship. Bulletproof coffee and coconut oil for the big WIN...we haven't got the time.
No one owns the term and word paleo. The truth has not been told what those people went through to survive. Keto is temporary. I know a woman who did it for over a year. Wrote up her big success story and then went on a trip to Europe. She ate her way through several countries and rebounded back with every pound plus friends.
She kept trying to get back UP on that high horse and keto wagon but she lost heart.
Woo's = Boo's. They do. But there are some here who really do have your best interest at heart.

I think both Paleo and The Paleo Diet have both been trademarked
Keto might have been a temporary fix for you but for many it’s a gateway into LCHF and it a permanent diet model for millions.
I personally do not eat in a VLCHF model, but I certainly prefer LCHF to a higher carb diet.
I agree an open mind approach is always best.11 -
No one owns the word paleo. They may have trademarked a diet but no owns the paleozoic era. That ended with the largest extinction event in the history of the earth. Paleo peoples. Sigh and alas.2

I'm becoming in increasingly convinced that when we remove sophisticated religious structure men will replace these with unsophisticated religious structures. Why you find such fervor and evangelism behind recent lifestyle converts. It's the inability to question - the fundamentalism - that is the problem.15 -
I prefer the limited grains and added sugars diet. I go for nutrient dense foods now and have noticed that I usually feel much better. It's usually a low carb diet but I do eat some high carb veggies so it's never going to be keto. Paleo loses me at no dairy. I tend to only eat cultured dairy like cheese, yogurt, and kefir but those are desserts to me. There also isn't anything wrong with beans. I don't eat them much but I do like some lentils every once in a while.1

Of the two I personally like the flexibility of paleo my doc certainly did not endorse keto the question asked of my was why do you want to disrupt your heart health if you want to do anything use paleo as it has natural foods that’s what works for me. One must also be wise enough to know what you need to avoid in your food choices I dislike the word diet it’s a lifestyle change and find what works for you and don’t be afraid to sweat1

That's odd. Keto has been shown to improve markers of heart health.13 -
Well, newmeaow and snowshoe ,those things aren't really Paleo to me - they are just general whole foods.
One can eat a diet consisting mostly of whole foods without it having to be labelled as some sort of supposed semblance to our Paleo ancestors.
Which is what I think has had its day. Not the general advocating of whole foods but the Paleo label and the following of supposed intake of Paleo ancestors.7 -
Most people who are doing paleo these days (like me) are pretty much doing it for health reasons. We like to share recipes and tips, but other than that, not gung ho about how it's the only way to be healthy. Many of the gurus have their mindset toward a more whole foods diet.
It's a decent starting point, and there's a lot more variety than one may believe (unless if you live in a food desert, which is a whole different story). But there's no need to exclude other foods if you don't have reactions to them.3 -

You were brave to ask this. When all of the money is raked in for the paleo gurus, when they've squeezed the last turnip and sweet potato for a buck, then it will be over.

Lost as to what point you are making here - yes of course it is about what works for the individual - but was talking about the Paleo label or philosophy (ie supposedly eat like Paleo ancestors did) haveing had its day - not the general mostly whole foods approach

Paleo people did not have zoodles, cauli-rice, cauli-crust, paleo fruit and meat bars, purified water, sparkling water sodas, coconut oil and coconut water, BPC....
They existed on insects, rodents, offal = organ meats, wildgame, fish when the lakes and rivers were not completely frozen over and even some legumes, grains, marsh grasses.
There was no such thing as one diet for Paleolithic man - flexibility was key to surviving the elements. Paleo man rarely made it to the age of 40 and many of the children died by the age of 15. Paleo mummies have atherosclerosis. Heart disease was around for Paleo people groups.
Modern day Paleo man argues that you can't eat grains or legumes because they have anti-nutrients. But all plants and other foods contain some level of anti-nutrients. Lectins are found in legumes and grains, vegetables, nuts, seeds, spices, herbs and fruits.
I could give two hoots about the modern day version of Paleo, primal and all of the rest of the corresponding protocols. Those gurus have made out like bandits - hauling all of their loot to the bank by whopping boatloads in armored vehicles. Ground turkey or ground chicken bobbles spread upon a pristine bed of kale or spinach with a pretty sauce swirled around the top doesn't move me.
Paleo won't be over until all of the loot is gathered into the coffers.

The brain on food is a good thing but if any particular food protocol could heal mental illness we could shut the doors of every medical facility that's currently treating patients for everything from depression to dissociative identity disorder.1 -

I would say no.
There is no one pharmaceutical cure for any diseases that I can think of, so even if food can help heal illnesses it may not be a cure, nor will it work for everyone.1 -

Because keto advocates never claim that eating carbs drives up insulin and insulin causes fat gain regardless of whether you're in a caloric deficit or not. Keto advocates never quote pseudoscience by charlatans like Taubes and Fung, who paint sugar and/or insulin, rather than caloric surplus, as the cause of obesity. Keto advocates never claim that you can lose weight even when in a massive caloric surplus due to the "metabolic advantage" supposedly created by ketosis. Keto advocates never claim that it's all about the carbs, not the calories, for weight loss. Keto advocates never claim that you can lose weight faster on keto than you can on a caloric deficit accomplished by any other macro split.
Nope. None of that ever happens.
At least the "foundation of bias" on MFP is built upon established, clinically proven scientific principles which are directly derived from the laws of physics.22 -

If you want some example of people happily eating less carbs than you can manage to then there are a couple of keto / LCHF groups on MFP and I’m sure google can point you in the direction of much empirical scientific evidence.
Or search through low carb threads on MFP. Plenty of scientific evidence has been posted by people happily and successfully eating in a low carb diet model, many of them not even calorie counting13 -

So, why do you think so many people on these boards are claiming that Keto is a craze? Why isnt there many more Keto advocates here to back up their way of eating? I most certainly wouldn't relegate it to just a group chat, heck if I found sustainable success with Keto I would be shouting it from the rooftops. Another question..why has it only recently enjoyed a renaissance despite it being around for a century? I would've thought an effective diet method such as this would be the the answer to all our weight loss problems and NEVER fall out of favour.
Could it also be that maybe just maybe a high number of LCHF/keto dieters may have enjoyed a measure of short term success and then found it unsustainable and restrictive in the long-term. Cutting out certain food groups will tend to do this for many people.

You wake up one day and realize that this cannot go on forever. There are some people here that have garnered respect from everybody. They are not playing games but genuinely want to get the truth out there. Keto is a temporary fix. Start thinking about a strategy that will help keep the positive side effects you like now with your weight and muscle mass.
So much of paleo is absolute malarkey. During the long winter months, the tribes on the plains, northern Canada and elsewhere lived with about 9 months of snow. Lakes and rivers were frozen. There was no fishing going on and hunting for wildgame during blizzards and -40 below temps were a real hardship. Bulletproof coffee and coconut oil for the big WIN...we haven't got the time.
No one owns the term and word paleo. The truth has not been told what those people went through to survive. Keto is temporary. I know a woman who did it for over a year. Wrote up her big success story and then went on a trip to Europe. She ate her way through several countries and rebounded back with every pound plus friends.
She kept trying to get back UP on that high horse and keto wagon but she lost heart.
Woo's = Boo's. They do. But there are some here who really do have your best interest at heart.

I think both Paleo and The Paleo Diet have both been trademarked
Keto might have been a temporary fix for you but for many it’s a gateway into LCHF and it a permanent diet model for millions.
I personally do not eat in a VLCHF model, but I certainly prefer LCHF to a higher carb diet.
I agree an open mind approach is always best.

Better still, I would actually like to hear from more than just one person who has had long term success from following LCHF. I can only think of you and one other poster on here that are huge advocates but nobody else.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that all it takes is a CALORIE DEFICIT to lose weight instead of saying only their way of eating is the best.
I haven’t seen anyone on this thread saying that LCHF is better than any other diet model, or that weight lose is anything other than calorie deficit.
On this thread, I have seen people dismissing keto as a craze (even though it has been around for a century) and openly wanting to topple it. Which is probably why you don’t find many LCHF / keto dieters getting involved in these types of debates.
If you want some example of people happily eating less carbs than you can manage to then there are a couple of keto / LCHF groups on MFP and I’m sure google can point you in the direction of much empirical scientific evidence.
Or search through low carb threads on MFP. Plenty of scientific evidence has been posted by people happily and successfully eating in a low carb diet model, many of them not even calorie counting
So, why do you think so many people on these boards are claiming that Keto is a craze? Why isnt there many more Keto advocates here to back up their way of eating? I most certainly wouldn't relegate it to just a group chat, heck if I found sustainable success with Keto I would be shouting it from the rooftops. Another question..why has it only recently enjoyed a renaissance despite it being around for a century? I would've thought an effective diet method such as this would be the the answer to all our weight loss problems and NEVER fall out of favour.
Could it also be that maybe just maybe a high number of LCHF/keto dieters may have enjoyed a measure of short term success and then found it unsustainable and restrictive in the long-term. Cutting out certain food groups will tend to do this for many people.
I assumed you would have empirical evidence at your disposal since you are so vocal about the topic, my bad.
That’s simple; a majority of the regular posters on the debate / food & nutrition / and general, preach IIFYM / CC to anyone and everyone. Even on the threads that are specifically looking for advice on an alternative but equally optimal diet model. I would assume most new people that are on here for advice on LCHF / keto think twice before returning.
Join a LCHF diet site and you will see plenty of people that have tried and failed many times at calorie counting. Although to be fair there are less people posting on those threads wanting to do calorie counting, so they may come across as more welcoming.
LCHF has been popular for a long while and I don’t know exactly why keto is enjoying more popularity at the moment, it is certainly enjoying growth with endurance athletes.
Meta analysis reviews showing that keto / LCHF is just as optimal as IIFYM can only help its popularity.

I have had long-term weight loss success (almost 3 years in maintenance) without having to resort to manipulating my way of eating, no LCHF IIFYM IF KETO just good old fashioned calorie counting, and following the principles of CICO. This has made my lifestyle so much easier to follow, knowing that I do not have to be as restrictive but still obviously keep a degree of control on my food intake, and I don't think but KNOW that will be something I can upkeep forever.
Reading the majority of these threads has reinforced my opinion that the most effective, sustainable achievable and most importantly SAFE way of eating is one where there is no need to cut out or reduce food groups like CARBS, FATS, PROTEINS, SUGAR and other essential nutritional elements.
I also did a search about forums and discussions promoting LCHF as you suggested and found the most recent to be authored by yourself and two other posters. This is very telling to see such little advocacy for KETO LCHF et al on these boards. The last post on the biggest LCHF group forum was about two weeks ago, I thought it would be a hive of activity, my bad once again
