I track my fitness with the Misfit Shine2. I don’t need to know when someone texts or calls as my kid is only 6 and I don’t really like people. Lol. Tap it twice and I see my progress and the time. Tap is 3 times and it goes into my preferred activity. I choose it for the fact that I could personalize the way it looks. Plus it came with a sport strap, a leather strap and a clip which came in handy when I was on the treadmill.3

My run on Sunday was preceded by hours of torrential rain so consequently my path was littered with literally thousands of worms in a few particularly sodden places. I didn't want to step on them for two very sound reasons reasons: 1. They're good for the garden and therefore friends of mine, and 2. Ew. After a very awkward two or three kilometres 'dancing' around them I changed my route to higher ground which I knew wouldn't be covered in wriggling worms.
It did make me wonder, however, whether the birds around here had already eaten their fill; were too busy bailing water out of their nests to stop and snack; or had an agreement with the worms that they wouldn't target those that were forced to flee their homes due to flooding.
The things you fill your mind with on your long runs...
Running challenge
1 July: 5.30 at 5:09 pace (race pace)
2 July: yoga
3 July: 7.01 at 5:45 pace
4 July: yoga
5 July: 12.66 at 5:50 pace (“unproductive" according to Garmin)
6 July: rest
7 July: yoga
8 July: 15.2 at 6:01 (slow and steady)
9 July: yoga
10 July: 6.0 at 6:02 pace (probably faster but I had a child on a bike in tow who kept needing a push - I certainly had to work harder) plus another 1.8km at about the same pace with similar issues getting the younger daughter to kindy.
11 July: yoga
12 July: 10.71 at 5:25 pace - when you’re short on time but you want to go long, you gotta go fast.
13 July: rest and pizza (and more pizza)
14 July: sneaky 6.7km to undo some of last night’s pizza damage followed by yoga. Great way to start a Saturday.
15 July: 16.51 at 5:55 pace. Building up to the Mt Maunganui Half on August 25.
16 July: yoga
17 July: 5.79 at 6:02, plus 3.9 at a similar pace dropping children off at kindy and so on.
18 July: 7.19 at 5:39 and yoga later tonight
98.77 of 150km for July14 -
@Teresa502 - I don't normally carry water because I am typically never far from a drinking fountain. On Monday I was further than I should have been apparently given the heat and humidity. I also hate carrying a bottle or wearing a belt with bottles - I do have them I just hate the way it feels.
@skippygirlsmom - I really hope they can tell you something that can put her mind at ease! Sending her (and you) lots of big {{hugs}}!
@MegaMooseEsq - I think we have all been caught up in that chasing the PR, chasing a specific pace, etc. at some point in time and it will come and go. All I wanted when I started (after I got over just being able to run a little bit) was to be able to run faster and faster... each time I got injured and came back I was pushing to get back to whatever pace or time I thought I should be running. Now I just try to run at whatever feels right for that day and the conditions at the time as well as following my plan if i am training for something. For me it has really become to just be the best me, I can be whether running or weight lifting or whatever I am doing.
On the bugs and bats discussion... I can deal with some bugs better than others none of which I want in my house. I can remember my Grandma (in Florida) having 'palmetto' bugs which were just another name for huge *kitten* cockroaches! Yuck! I cannot deal with spiders inside or outside but I do like to see the pretty webs they make just so long as they are not anywhere that I need to go. I used to be SO afraid of bats until I took a class with my daughter at the Seattle zoo, all about bats. It was so interesting and they are pretty cute. I was very disheartened by all the issues and illnesses that have beset them and consequently the impact to the overall environment. We have them here but not as many as in the past and in Seattle they are encouraging people to put up bat houses and/or open their attics to them, especially in the older homes where they used to live anyway.
@bride001 - yah - I was worried too but tried it and then tested how it felt barefoot and with my running shoes and even with a test run. It was actually pretty easy to put the tape on but it did take me a few attempts to get it pulled right.
On the run tracker... I used to use MapMyRun on my phone as well as the activity tracker on my Apple Watch. But now I just use the Strava app on my watch. I like some of the features on MMR like the current pace, that isn't available on Strava and honestly if there was a feed from MMR to Strava I would go back to using it. I too love my Apple Watch for texts, calls, music (I use Spotify), etc. My daughter has one too and we 'compete' to complete our daily activities. I had the Apple Watch original (1?) and can say the 3 is much improved. I haven't had any problems really with it and the battery last multiple days. If I didn't have the Apple Watch and love it so much I would definitely get one of the Garmins that has similar functionality.
@marisap2010 - If you are using Strava on your watch, save your activity there (don't close the app) and open the app on your phone. Pull down on the feed screen to refresh and your workout should appear there. I have not had any issues getting it to synch.
@elise4270 - yes I mentioned Topo's I have the road ST2s as well as the trail MT2s for agility. I love them! They are light minimal drop (0 in the ST2s and 3 or 4 I think in the MT2s) and have the nice wide toe box. When I was traveling a lot I always too the ST2s because they can fold up or squish really flat! Note depending on which ones you got they don't have a ton of cushion or padding.4 -
A friend can't remember the last time she ran without pain or a niggle.
I feel the same way, but I'm OK with it. As my wonderful boss says, "There's always something".
I'm not talking about torn muscles or anything. Just things that make you go, "hmm".
Does that sound familiar?3 -

Eww!! That statement makes me want to take a shower. Lol please tell me you washed your sheets the next day at least.
4.5 miles think I might get close to making my goal.
@Orphia I’m right there with your friend. I feel like an old lady the first mile of my runs. Everything just hurts and cracks, I probably look like a drunk person. I too am okay with it as my doctors say I actually need to be exercising more.2 -

Amen sister! That's why it takes me so long to 'warm-up'. I feel stiff everywhere and my lower legs always have at least a slight pain with each step for several miles. But most of the time it goes away eventually.
I dream of the day I don't feel that pain on the first step.2 -
5.1k today, half road, half muddy, nettle-y trail. I was feeling sore and tired, so took it as an easy day instead of skipping the run like I was tempted to do. Except when I got back and looked at my training log, I realized I could've skipped it, as I'm on goal and already planning to run tomorrow with my friend. But then tennis camp starts, and then I'm helping with several other sports camps after that... so I may get behind on this thread.
I've made it 36 hours without an upcoming race on my calendar. I'm okay so far.
Upcoming races: (none)10 -
@PastorVincent Check out this website. Lots race options in our general area. You might find that trail race you are looking for. https://www.westernreserveracing.com0

Got up early to run before it gets hot but I'm not running during a thunderstorm so I guess I will run later when it's hot.
At least it's not going to be as hot as yesterday...4 -

re: bugs etc. I am like a small child fascinated by insects. When I lived out in Japan I couldn't understand why none of my students were as fascinated as me watching the cicada vibrate its abdomen to chirp. Also whilst there I discovered cockroaches can fly when I went to pick one up and take it out of my flat and it went for my face.
Three things I can live without - earwigs, silverfish and centipedes/millipedes. Silverfish always used to be in my breakfast cereal, earwigs I just have an issue with, and centipedes and millipedes are just plain WRONG. Spiders are cool and have amazing faces. Bats are also cool, all bats here are a protected species and you aren't allowed to touch them without a licence.
@ContraryMaryMary - question about the worms. were they all straight? I did a run a while back and all of the worms were out, but they were all straightened out. It was the oddest thing I'd seen but I didn't have a phone with me to take a picture.
In other news, I RAN this morning. For all the newcomers to running, know this - keep at it, and whilst running 30 seconds right now may seem a struggle, one day you'll find you can just get up and throw out an easy 3 mile run, having not run for a couple of weeks, and it just feels normal.

Been away on Vacation so haven't accomplished very much this month. Did manage to spend a few days in Northern British Columbia around the town of Tumbler Ridge where my next event is. This one run doubled my monthly distance in one 2 hour shot.
Sunday, July 15, 2018 15.24 km Emperors Challenge Training Run.
From the Boulder Gardens parking lot around the upper portion of the course. The bottom 2.5km from the Core Lodge is on a dusty road so to be avoided until Race Day when it is closed for the race. Some ATV's had been through the trail doing Bush Clearing/Trimming which helps knock the grass down but creates some ruts at the wet spots so a bit of a trade off in benefit's. Walked a few sections as they are just to steep/wet/tough for me to maintain a run in them. Save the energy for where I can run.
The Strava Data - a wee bit of elevation change
@JessicaMcB If they had an Ultra in the area you would love ir.
A few pictures - which really show why I like running ( turtle walking ) Mountain Trails.

I enjoy bugs and critters too! We have a small population of cicada killers this year. Its interesting watching them buzz the ground looking for prey. Few years back we found salamanders in some pompas grass we removed from the flower bed. Never seen them before. No idea they were even here.
Water bugs, like giant roaches fly. And the saying is that if you see one fly it means rain within 3 days. We put all bugs outside too. Scorpions, spiders and millipedes are the norm here (unless a cat brings in a snake or rat, the occasional bunny).
House roaches can be vicious. My daughter had a friend growing up who's home was infested. They bit her when she was over. If i see anything that remotely looks like a house roach, its dead. We have a neice that visits and she has them. I'm not interested in her sharing them with us.
One year we even relocated a pygmy rattle snake rather than killing it.
Didn't wash the bedding after stepping on the frog. He was next to an amonite and i think i stepped on both mearly pinning the frog. No guts no goo, just slimy frog. Sure If DH tried that id probably be WTH man!
But then i can get him to not .... And ..... Or........ .......(infinity). Frog couldn't be any worse than my dirty cats on the bed. potentially could be some "magical" benefits. I could be his princess maybe he'll come back for me. hahaha!

@shanaber i ordered the topo runventure 2. I'm such a sucker when it comes to gear advertised on RW. (I also want the hydro flask growler- i have their ~20oz and love it)
These are zero drop, and I'm currently use to 7-8. So I'll have to be diligent about working them into a rotation. They are light shoes, 209oz. Said you can feel the ground, so awesome! I cant do all that cushion. (Still havent gotten dh to get/make me moccisins- hes a tad American Indian and i kid him).
I'm waiting "patiently" for my new shoes, during a taper week, on a day off...2 -

I only got 4 miles done today. I lost a contact this morning when I was getting ready and I got out the door a little later than I intended. It was a pretty uneventful run, but nice. It was 79F for my run this morning. We are supposed to have extreme heat the next few days with highs up to 107F and lows only in the 80's. I think it is much hotter this summer than it was last year. I am glad I started running in the morning.
