I was born in the 50's and grew up through the 1960s, when we used to follow the mosquito spray truck around. I figure at this point, I've consumed enough chemicals to kill me, so I don't worry too much about it. I like oatmeal, I don't worry about GMO. If you get excited about this, you also probably believe that chickens are raised without hormones, which they aren't and never were. When the FDA says to avoid something, I will think about it then.

I'm old enough to remember mosquito spray trucks. Do you think the USDA and then EPA were too fast or slow in limiting and then banning DDT?

And the EWG overstates risks on chemicals and their recommendations are backed more by fear than by science. They are the same group that puts out the "dirty dozen" list trying to scare you into thinking organically produced produce is safer.

I suspect anybody in defense of Monsanto and their products is just a goon working for Monsanto. So how much are they paying you?

Hell, Starbucks had a higher gross revenue than Monsanto and they couldn't keep California from making them slap cancer warning labels on their coffee. So much for all that money and power and conspiracy nonsense.

    From the Fortune 500 list:

    http://fortune.com/fortune500/list/filtered?searchByName=Monsanto

Definately a large company for sure but just to put it in context when claims about how much "control" they have over food and life and governments and etc etc conspiracy.

Here are some companies that have a larger revenue than Monsanto according to 2018 Fortune 500. All numbers are in billions.

Best Buy: $42,151. The Geek Squad controls all computers.
Tyson Foods: $38,260. Supresses all scientific data suggesting that breaded chicken thighs are bad for you
    Rite Aid: $32,845
Kraft Heinz: $26,323. Entire governments are in the pocket of Big Ketchup
Dollar Tree: $22,245. The federal reserve is under their thumb because they took out a payday loan
CarMax: $16,637. Controls the world supply of wiper fluid
Gap: $15,855. Tells world governments when skinny jeans are back in style
Monsanto: $14,640. Controls the food supply, represses all scientific research demonstrating their products are dangerous, acts like the mafia towards farmers. (all things people actually say)

Things closes to Monsanto in revenue and thus also capable of controlling the world if they wanted to:

Aramark: $14,604. Better hope they don't set their sites higher than college lunch catering
Envision Healthcare $14,700. I'd make a joke here too but honestly I've never heard of this company.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here but wouldn't it be silly to think all companies are equally smart and capable when it comes to turning dollars into influence?

    Or have the incentive to.

Well, unprofitable companies may not care to try and influence the market or protect their brand.

From my observation unprofitable companies however are most likely to cut corners.

Hawkins Cheezies is an example of a company that DOES NOT want to grow their brand. They don’t bother with marketing and sales growth. The company is just big enough to be comfortable.

We actually dragged our heels on climate change for decades, in part because companies like Exxon were able to sow confusion on the issue. There was famously a list of scientists who doubt climate change, and many of the people on it in did in fact accept money from the petrochemical industry.

Yeah that is fair, and of course my post is a bit tongue in cheek...I just think it is far more ridiculous to think that one company could literally control the food supply rather than just say make a product that is very competitive and therefore commonly used.

This is not to say that there isn't a conversation to be had about if we should limit any one companies influence on basic human needs such as food nor am I saying we shoudn't be concerned by policies, practices and products that influence our food supply. I just don't feel that going full tin-foil hat about it is warranted.

I think we're in a situation where people like making babies, and have gotten really good at it. So there are a lot of us. Too many to feed with ancient farming methods and crops alone. Food is something we all depend on. In the old days, our great great grandparents used to be involved in producing the food they ate. Now, it's completely removed from most peoples' day to day lives. People know their food has been engineered, but they don't know the specifics of how, or of how it was tested. That's bound to make a lot of people apprehensive. Even about food Monsanto had nothing to do with.

Oh totally, I understand and can even appreciate the why...I just think a lot of people take it too far and make a lot of completely unfounded accusations and assumptions.

There is a difference between "I don't know enough about this to understand it therefore I am going to be skeptical about experts in this area telling me everything is fine" and "I don't know enough about this to understand therefore I know for a fact the experts are paid shills and are covering up a massive health threat"

    I agree 100%.
