Quick & dirty trail race - part of the MEC trail race series. I dropped down to the short distance due to the half on Sunday and I have to say, it was nice finishing with other people! Mostly the 9K finishers who had lapped me haha. Course was really pretty - non-technical double track on the way out, and then rooty and muddy single track on the way back. My butt found the mud of course but it was a soft landing so it was all good!
Pretty happy with my performance and I know for a fact I wasn't last this time which is a bonus. Thinking I finished in 39:50ish for my official time.

26hour, 20 minute MFP Virtual Relay For Dennis.

I created a column for those that need/want help figuring the time slot. Just include name. time zone and time youd like, others or myself will put you in the correct GMT slot.
There are still many times available.

cheers @Elise4270 - I've added myself, but happy to move times to suit - can offer a couple of hours, and maybe a second stint later (although that stint would cover the all running bit maybe?)2

Wow I had a busy day yesterday and didn't get to catch up here and you all write pages of posts! Only going to comment on a few though...
@RespectTheKitty - I hope you get your meds sorted out and feel better soon!
@amymoreorless - So glad you helped the homeless guy on your trail and I hope he is doing ok now! We have so many homeless here 😟 for a while there were hundreds (somewhere around 900 was the estimate) living in and along the riverbed. They generally don't bother me but I hated the mess because they threw everything on the ground and it was an issue for Hobbes. I have more problems with some of the workers and 'young' guys. I told a bunch of them once to leave me alone, that I was old enough to be their mom or grandma and would they want them treated that way.
@RunsOnEspresso - hope the sleep study goes well and turns up some answers. Is there any possibility that you aren't eating enough? When the medical doctors could find nothing on my fatigue it was the nutritionist that got to the root cause.
@garygse and @workaholic_nurse - the thing with windshield wipers is that they are deceptive... you may not feel them at all when you are doing them. They may even feel easy. Then later you are wondering why it hurts even when you turn just a little bit!
@ContraryMaryMary - I am so sorry you are still sick and had to DNS your race!
@Elise4270 - I don't like the higher stack heights either. I feel like I am going to step wrong and twist an ankle. That said I do have a pair of Altra Escalante now in rotation for short easy recovery runs but I think the stack height is 23. I am also looking at the Altra Solstice also stack of 23 and only 5.3 ounces!
I have 3 pairs in rotation but my Skora Tempos are starting to tear. I bought some of the Shoe Goo that @LaDispute57 recommended and am hoping it will fix the tear and not cause a rubbing point.
@sarahthes - Congratulations on your race! Looks like a muddy good time!
@Elise4270 - I will get my name added to the list... I am one of those time zone challenged people but will figure it out with an internet time zone converter

I had a tough strength session Thursday evening so was not surprised that I woke up stiff and sore all over Friday morning. My plan was to do a treadmill interval run at the gym since we were going to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl Friday night and really wanted to enjoy the food and wine 😁
It might not have been the best idea because I was so sore but I started slow to see if I could manage it and was surprised at how great I felt. Overall distance per the treadmill of 5 miles and overall running pace 11:00/mile and ended up with 16x400m. Next time I will do fewer but longer intervals I think... I did get in some faster intervals at the top but don’t remember if it was @9 or 9:30.
WU 2x11:30 2x11 2x10:30 2x10 2x9:30 3x10 2x10:30 1x11 CD
With that I hit my goal for August so now I am on to my stretch goal as part of the 100 mile club. Today however is a rest day after the intervals yesterday and a late night as well. May need a nap this afternoon!

10 SLOW easy miles this morning. Even as I was lacing up my shoes I was debating on going out because I was feeling really beat up and tired, but once I was out, it felt pretty good. Still was a challenge, but could have been much worse. Took a page out of @marisap2010's book and didn't look at my watch at all during the run. Just went by feel trying to keep it easy. That felt so liberating! Going into next month's marathon training, that will have to be the predominant way I run if I am going to make it through.
Speaking of @marisap2010, great job on the 5K PR. And you weren't even trying! Your training is really paying off!
@RunsOnEspresso hope the sleep study reveals some good info.
@ContraryMaryMary so sorry for your DNS. Hope you feel better real soon!
@sarahthes that race looks like fun! Great job getting through all the mud.6 -
Thanks everyone!
@Scott6255 I love these races. $15 entry fee and really well organized.
@ContraryMaryMary That sucks . Hope you feel better soon.
@PastorVincent Hope you also feel better soon and can gut out some miles.1 -

Today's notes – 7 AM paced run at Mendon Ponds Park today. This is the start of the route, though I didn't take the picture till after I was done running:
I normally pace 8:00 per mile, though I will pace 8:30 if someone needs that and no one needs 8:00. Mendon is noted for hills. People who normally run with the 9:00 group were talking about doing 9:30 today. No one wanted 8:00 or 8:30, so I had a pleasant solo run. Garmin says 63º F (17º C) when I started, and the humidity was down at autumn levels. Saw several deer, but I was running and not coordinated enough to take pictures.
There was one water stop, about 5 miles in and again at 7.4 miles as I looped back. I didn't stop, but the volunteer there got my picture:
I love Mendon. It's very pretty, which you wouldn't know by how many pictures I don't take. I like the rolling hills. They're good training for Oak Tree a week from tomorrow. I decided I'd be okay with running a bit slower than an 8:00 pace, and did just that . . . for 2 miles or so. Then I fell into a comfortable approximation of 8:00 per mile. Mile 13 was slower, because I stopped at my car to get a fresh bottle of Nuun and didn't pause the watch. Mile 14 was fast, because it was predominantly downhill. And the very end was pushing the pace because I smelled a finish line. But the average came out close to target:
Strava says the elevation gain was 1018 feet. I tend to believe Strava is more accurate with elevation than Garmin.
Chatted, stretched, came home and ate. I feel great. Could have run another 2 miles on level ground, except there isn't any truly level ground to be had at Mendon Ponds Park. So I'm satisfied with my 18 miles today, rounding out a 47 mile week. I should have a bit of a cutback week next week, with a rest day on Saturday before the Oak Tree Half on Sunday. But after today, I'm not worried about the hills at Oak Tree.

Have to get a pair!
I'm missing the ugliness though. They look awesome to me!
ETA. I found them. The stack height is 29mm. Thats 10mm more than I'm use too. In shoes, If i walk on carpet i get wobbley. I assume its because the loss of proprioception. Anyone else? Nah prob just me and my nerve damage...
Think i will drop buy the store Monday (after surgeon follow up) and check these out.
How do you like the stack height?
I've only 2 pair of shoes in rotation. One is a road shoe, other the trail. So, @AlphaHowls said i needed 3, right 😆 and i can check out the winter gear after my nike aeroloft vest got washed and lost all the down
I ran 5 miles on trails in the new Altra timps today and I still love them. I feel like I'm leaning more forward with my feet hitting under me instead of in front, and pushing off more to the rear, and my legs are swinging freely from the hip instead of stomping. My wobbly no ACL knee also loves them, maybe because of less landing impact. The stack height is weird to get used to - on roads at a walk, they feel a little like walking on half a volleyball strapped to the underside of your foot, and I keep forgetting that I need to pick my feet up higher and scraping the bottom of my foot on rough terrain. However the upside is that they feel very energetic and cushioned.
The only real downside so far is that they are not as stable side to side as my Cascadias when running on ground with long ridges, like ruts from multiple cars. That broad forefoot likes to tip and it took me a couple times of almost rolling an ankle to get used to the different response. I also feel my glutes getting tired more quickly, which I think is because I'm using better form. Definitely takes some getting used to.
They are fun as heck to run down hills in. There is almost no "jamming" motion of your leg landing in front of you and stopping, you just roll forward from your toes and all the momentum transfers into speed. Once you get used to the idea that you're not going to die and just relax you can really fly up and down hills. They are also great for jumping over small obstacles.
If you're looking for a lower stack height, the Altra Lone Peak is supposedly basically the same shoe but with less height, and the Olympus is the same shoe but more stack height.

5 miles on trails, 92 degrees, I am half past over this heat. We did have a nifty moment on the boardwalk where a deer ducked under the boardwalk as we ran over it. She flattened herself right down to the ground and scooted under and bounded off!
I'm concerned that I may be getting a stress fracture in my left foot. My Brooks Adrenalines really press hard on the top of my instep and it seems more sore than it has any right to be, despite resting a couple days and wearing different shoes which don't aggravate the same place.
Going for stretch goal of 50 miles!

Here is the thread @Scott6255 There is a link to the spreadsheet, I think, in the first post. The same link has been shared in this thread which is this one
@rheddmobile Thanks for the additional info on the shoes. Are those road shoes? I run some down hill, and washouts on trails... so they might not be the best shoe for me yet. I loved the bottom of those shoes. I remember that my marathoning dentist loved the fuller stacks. But that makes sense if you are running long miles on pavement.
I had something weird happen to my knee that felt much like a bakers cyst rupture. I'll see the doc monday and see. I suspect with the ITB surgery, the knee is still adjusting. I have zero drop topo's suggested by @shanaber, they have been terrific.5 -

They're trail shoes, but the review I read said they are decent on roads as well. I haven't really run roads in them yet unless you count half a mile or so on the boardwalk, which felt fine but not fast.
What I noticed first after the immediate stinging of my cyst rupture was the calf pain. If it is a rupture, elevating and lightly compressing it may keep it from leaking fluid down into your muscles, which trust me you don't want.0 -
@shanaber When I actually log I am eating at least 2k per day. I eat similar most days even when I don't log.
I was in bed for almost 8 hours last night, felt like I slept only a few. Didn't run again this morning because of it.4
