Do people ever criticize the way you choose to eat?

Them: "How are supposed to lose weight eating that?"
Me: "I make room in my calorie budget"

Me: "I ran 5 miles this morning, and I'm going to my hard workout this evening"
Them: "Oh" with a look of defeat
Just sounds like the person was uneducated to me and ignorant on how weight loss works. Idk why ppl automatically get on defence mode or think people are trying to battle them when they are simply asking questions.
The thing, I really do 5 mile runs in the morning and an extra workout in the evenings, that way I can eat the high calorie foods. IDK why people assume that I'm being defensive, when I'm being honest.9 -

I wouldn’t say criticize. But I do get heckled a bit for being vegan (technically WFPB).4

Yes on occasion.
Eat a salad- "you need protein"
Eat leftovers or small portions at work for lunch- "why can't you afford to buy lunch"
Eat a pint of Halo Top or fast food "you have no will power/ self control"
Eat fruit as an office snack instead of Pop Tarts (the new office snack is Pop Tarts) "you're making us look bad"10 -
Very infrequently in real life. I'll occasionally get an eye roll when I won't eat something that I know is not safe for a celiac to eat but not from people I care about or who care about me. They can see but my obvious health improvements and weight management that what I am doing is healthy for me. (I'm a celiac who eats almost as a carnivore to deal with insulin resistance, arthritis, and autoimmune issues.)
On MFP it is a WHOLE different situation. I've never been on another board where people feel the urge to tell you that you are wrong, and not even that they just "think" you are wrong, so freely. I'm sure part of it is because the board is food and diet focused and that is just a part of the rest of my life. But it really is incredibly different from my everyday life.16 -
Not that I can remember. It wouldn't matter to me if they did. I'd just nod and blink in that way you do when someone is saying something that really doesn't interest you but you don't want to be rude.2

Like come on that's not very healthy, you know, if I eat piece of cake - but just in friendly camaraderie, not in real criticism
And not directed at me personally, just a general small talk jokey comment.
Sometimes I wonder if some people take those sort of comments too seriously.
But on MFP - sadly, yes. By diary stalkers.
In threads where I have not asked for input or claimed anything about my own intake
I could understand if, for example, I made big fuss about how important clean eating was and then people noticed I ate chocolate most days.
But happens in threads about general issues when somebody disagrees with me.

People IRL do not but virtually through myfitnesspal - I have encountered some scrutiny, which I've not minded in the least. There was a time when I was massive still, mindful of my per serving allotments, when the local community via the private club, did scrutinise what I chose to put on my plate, at our weekly luncheons and/or dinners, which members of myfitnesspal considered too low.
Around me, usually at dinner socials, I've deduced that for some, to slight others in social settings is their comforting-spiel, as entitled diet & nutrition expert gurus, focused on their usual soft targets. My sister however, never lets them slide. She gets all up in there lol4 -
My favorite: "Are you allowed to eat that?!"7

Interesting how somebody just jumped in to woo my post - given my post was not claiming to be any more than an anecdote of my personal experience.
Perhaps it was one of said diary stalkers

In real life, people don't seem to criticise my diet, but I have been told I am too thin when in a healthy BMI range, by people that are obese!
I started off on another calorie counting forum where I was criticised on what seemed like a daily basis. I ate fruits that weren't berries and avocados, grains of various sorts, potatoes ..... yep, all those evil carbs. It got to the point where I started feeling guilty about my food choices even though, deep down I knew my diet was balanced and healthy.
I was also told that I should not be eating back the calories I burned through walking because you don't actually burn that much anyway and your body becomes adapted so you burn even less. I was averaging close to 30,000 steps a day at the time. I didn't last long before finding my way here. Anyone that thinks it is bad here has little idea of how bad it can get.10 -
I think it's fun to screw with people. I don't talk about my weight loss to friends, but the change is pretty obvious to everybody. So it's fun to go out to dinner with them and really throw down - eat a half-pound burger, fries and ice cream for dessert, or polish off a whole pizza or a huge Mexican meal, and have them go "How can you lose weight eating like that???". Then I smile and make some silly comment like "Hollow leg", or "I dunno - fast metabolism, I guess".
People don't see how you eat 90-95% of the time, so it's easy to fool them with the other 5-10%.23 -
I've never like gravies/sauces or mayo/ketchup/dressings (all those things most people pour over their otherwise delicious food).
So my whole life people have been telling me that I have weird eating habits...they still focus on this and tell me it's weird.

Not really no... although hubby will still laugh or comment when I cut the teeniest slice of cake for myself.2

You have to eat clean to lose weight - I've lost 170lb and not washed my food in fairy liquid yet
Fake sugars cause cancer, you should put sugar in your coffee - science and my bowel disagree I do not need sugar (medical condition)
Is that plate for your toddler - no it's my weighed out portion....... That person actually put more food on my plate and got pissy when I didn't eat it
You need to cut out carbs to lose weight - only so much cheese and eggs I can eat, my results disagree

Not usually. Sometimes people have commented on the amount of salt I eat (which is annoying because in daily life I don't actually eat that much I just really like it on chips and things like that). In any case, I have low blood pressure so some salt isn't going to do me any harm!7

Me too. I have to go to my safe space when people screw with me.11 -
My mom is a self-righteous health food fanatic. I totally mean that - if there were a temple of healthy eating, she would be volunteering full time. And she would be the type that looks down on people that don't worship like her (I've had this conversation with her before).
So I get a lot of indirect talk about how I eat, and how sugar is "evil". Sure, sugar is not good, but sometimes it's nice to treat yourself, and not feel guilty about it. So yeah. I get those comments.12 -
Regarding the type of food I am eating? No. Pretty sure my RBF keeps people at bay.
But I have gotten comments on how long I heat my food up for. Had this one coworker who would walk by when I was heating up my lunch..."Wow, you are still heating your food up?!" I had leftover spaghetti and was heating it up in the microwave for 2 minutes3 -

It's funny because I know I read a thread recently where this literally happened to you (name is very distinctive). So not a cause to woo.

Me: "I run 20 miles a week. I eat less than 1300 calories a day."4 -
Only on MFP really. I've closed my diary as a result, like others have mentioned. Sometimes people comment when they see me eating "junk food" but it's usually surprise rather than condemnation. We have cake at work once a month but I only have some once or twice a year or if the doughnuts are going around and it's one of the rare occasions I take one, that sort of thing. I also rock a mean RBF so don't get hassled about much of anything LOL2
