I always thought I was a hard gainer or had a fast metabolism, until I came here and started tracking my food and also tracking my activity levels wygh fitbit. It turned out I'd been under eating and was also far more active than I realised.
I have now gained weight but, to those who say (to people saying they can't gain) : eat more - for some of us it's not as simple as that. I'm not a volume eater and really struggle to eat more food than I want to. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. Also many of the calorie dense foods can still fill you up if you don't have a big appetite. I've developed my own strategies for getting more food in but for some of us, it's a struggle3 -
Good post. Maybe theres a lot more to it than calories in calories out.15

Do you believe that if a weight trainer/body builder who has been lean (generally ectomorph) all their life and finds it hard to put on weight, eats an extra 300 calories a day than say your average of 3000 calories for most men, he will put on 30 pounds over the next 12 months. I dont, not for a minute.
I did. If you saw me a few years ago you would have labeled me an ectomorph. I spent most of my life riding an underweight BMI. Anybody meeting me now would assume mesomorph. I actually put on 60 the first year of training. Heck, I’ve put on 20 during this bulk I started in May. Somatotypes are bullpucky. Physiques are built on a foundation of training and nutrition. The missing key for me had been the nutrition and calories part of that equation.

Thats great. You found what works. 60 pound the first year. You were never an ectomorph. How old were you "a few years ago" How old now? Soma types are not bull. Theres some truth to it.15

I was talking talking to pinggolfer966

"You are extremely annoying. You’re like a troll, on every post where anybody says they are having trouble gaining weight." Are you talking to me??
She said a whole lot of insightful stuff about the difficulties of eating more, and that's the only think you've picked up on?
It IS damn annoying when people say, just eat more. If it were that simple, we wouldn't need this app.8 -
Im sure it is annoying for slow gainers when people say "eat more", and thats what the pinned thread says! And thats what Ive been disagreeing with! The premise that the body is like a bank account in the red and you just deposit that amount and a bit more and youre in the black is wrong in my opinion. Its not calories in calories out. Metabolic rates ie BMA, when you are resting differ between people. And for some it differs alot. Like Sasha. Shes had to force feed until she wants to throw up, to gain weight. Ok we dont know what she was eating, but still, thats extreme. If I did that I would explode over night. And Im a mesomorph now leaning toward endo because of my age and slowing metabolism. Just saying that tells you something. Imagine an endomorph type, who puts weight on easily, forcibly stuffing themselves all day every day.9

And somatotypes are still about as realistic and accurate as astrology. Might as well set your calorie intake according to your horoscope sign.14 -
I don't know enough about the research on body types. I know that for years I thought I couldn't gain weight but have now found I can - if I eat enough. But, some days it's a struggle. For me, a treat day is when I take a day off from logging and just eat what I want, when I want, without worrying about whether I've taken in enough calories.4

"Might as well set your calorie intake according to your horoscope sign." You say its false. Thats your opinion, which is fair enough, but theres plenty of others who dont agree, not just me.11

Not really. Most people agree that somatypes have no basis in science. You can believe what you want and keep insisting but there is nothing to back up these assertions. So, they are basically viewed as nonsense by most.6 -

Fair enough. Everybody is certainly entitled to their opinion, even if there are no facts to back it up. There are still people who insist the Earth is flat too.7 -
And billions that believe in God. Are they better off consulting horoscopes too?
I think we'll have to agree to disagree and wait for the future conclusive evidence that we dont yet have . Good thread though. Ive learnt from it.11 -
Did you just correlate believing in God to believing in somatypes and that the earth is flat??? Cold, bro. :huh:9

Haha, no I meant that we can have our firm opinions, we can have some facts, many facts or no facts at all, none of that makes us wrong. Until all of the facts are in, and are absolutely irrefutable, then its all opinion. And thats what forums are for. Maybe we learn something, maybe not.9

Not true. I am a Sagittarius and it's pretty difficult for me to gain weight.7 -
Except somatypes have been completely debunked, for some time. I mean, yeah, you can say whatever you want, but hijacking this thread to continue to hype a theory that has been considered nonsense for awhile isn't necessary. If you want to continue arguing about it, maybe start a thread in the Debate forum, and post some sources you found convincing.10

My comments relate directly to OP's first post. Thats not called hijacking. And I did feel it was necessary to present a contrary argument to the original post . Ive had my say. I think Im entitled to that. I get good results, learned from years of experience whether gaining muscle or losing fat or both at once. No one needs listen. Good luck.9
