Heather ~ A nice article from your DnL and the children are always so cute!
Tracey ~ For many, many years we lived pay check to pay check. I am now so glad that I stuck to teaching for 30+ yrs as the retirement has saved us.
Tracey ~ Your grand daughter is so cute! I have a gap between my front teeth that I have always hated. Dad did not believe in braces mainly because he and my mom had beautifully straight teeth. Alas, all five of us kids had crooked teeth.

carol sticking it out for 30 years as a teacher is one of my goals—financially it is the smart thing to do. Emotionally and physically hard though, I admire your tenacity and perseverance

I am not good at talking one on one. I can talk to a group so much easier.
I wear the NB shoes most the time. I really like the fit and they last.
Katiebug--I do like the new floor and laundry room look.
Sue--I pray the news from the doctor is not bad, I agree that they ust not be overly worried if appointment is 3 weeks away.
Janetr--Don'tlet DD make you feel bad about it, I still look at the larger sizes and find myself having to keep going down the row to the smaller sizes. Last week I got two pair of pants for work and ended up buying several sizes TOO big. DH laughed when I showed him. Not sure what I was thinking. Know I need to return them but I keep thinking I can just pin them in the waist. Only have about 6 inches to spare. LOL
Heather--love the idea of your pink gloves. Looking forward to seeing a picture of you all decked out in your coat and gloves and scave. Saw the picture and so pretty.
I have been fighting a headache the last couple days and today my eyes are fuzzy. Know it is stress and working through it . DD is just going off the deep end and I am trying to keep the tough love going as she is 42 and just not learning. Never had to take care of herself as ex did everything for her. I know she has to figure it out and I am doing my best, but I get so mad when she keeps doing dumb things. Like paying cell phone bill for a guy she dated last year when he would not help and this week both hers and his was shut off and she says she only need $1,00 to get them turned back on. When she is only working 25 hours a week, just dumb things like that. Now her car stopped running so she calls DH the other night and expected him to jump and go figure it out. Well he did and starter or something is out, she knew it was having problems kept driving it and not having it checked, so he told her she is on her own to figure it out. Sorry to go on so.
Nettiebess--Welcome. Just start one step at a time and do what you can each day and keep coming back to this group. You will get support, friendship and tips to make the changes needed.
Terry--welcome back and sending prayers and hugs for answers for DH and you.
Lenora--I am so sorry about not being able to drive, but keep posting. I read everyone.
I am also worried about my DYB who's wife has ALS and can not move from neck down or talk. He posted a couple days ago how angry and tired he is. He is taking care of her at home and their son left college last year to help. I have afforded to come stay with her while he does whatever just to get away. So far he says no.

What a great article! Thanks for sharing The grands are adorable!0 -
Katla - I hate those computer glitches that wipe things out! But all too often they’re Me glitches.
Betsy in NE Washington - Boy! There’s a whole flock of us here in the upper left corner of the map. I love my Fitbit Charge. I’m the proud new user of a CPAP machine, and the sleep tracking function really shows the difference. I wish they could be a one every few years perk from insurance though. Mine came free with my phone on a promo deal last year and I love it.
Rye - Oh! The trials of the Latin student and former English Major are many! My friends consider me slightly batty, but I notice they ask me for help when it comes to spelling, lol!
Viv York UK - it sounds as though times are tough right now. I read the positive or funny posts and sometimes that helps. Here’s a hug for you to help a bit for now. (((0)))
Machka in Oz - you’re right about temperature being a factor, but the main driver of blooming and color changes is length of day. I DO love to look for all the plants that have winter flowers, though. Most of them are small, but here in our cool temperate climate of Western WA there are things to look for all winter long. I imagine our climates are somewhat simulate.
Karen in Virginia - My daughter’s tease me that in my old age I have piles! Piles of books, piles of mail, piles of clothes! Lol! I hope to have more energy as the weight comes off after surgery. Only two more months!
Heather UK - You are now my muse! Throwing out things when you replace them is close to being heroic, in my eyes!
Sue in WA - Good luck with your cardiologist visit. I hope it’s not too serious.
NettieBess0218 - You are so welcome here. You’ve found a thread where folks empathize and encourage. I’m so delighted you’ve list almost 20k! It may be the meds, but you’re the one taking them faithfully. Does your gym have trainers around who will help you find the right exercises? That helps a lot. I couldn’t afford to keep my membership, but the hospital where I’m having bypass surgery has one we can use afterward. Not as nice as the commercial one.
My grandson is non-verbal but HFA otherwise. The schools are really great now on helping with that. I can see it makes things tougher - no wonder you feel anxious and depressed sometimes. I hope feeling better physically will help you with the mood troubles!
Terry Trying to Hold It Together in VT - Oh dear! You REALLY need a hug! It’s so scary dealing with a belived’s heart or health issues! One thing - he’ll be helped by eating healthier meals, and I did find, before he passed, that it helped me do better for myself. I wish I’d carried forward with that more.
Barbara the SW Oregon Coastie - Thanks for the Croc link! Those shoes hit my “ding!” button - meaning I love them … lots!
Lenora - One of the things I dread at 75 is not being able to drive. I’m glad you have someone to do some of it! I think I’d tend to consider the medication if it gave me a chance at getting that back.
vicki GI NE - Hugs for all of you! ALS is terrible, and being angry about it is totally understandable!
===================
I’m at 241 pounds today. That’s 21 less than my highest.
I’m sort of dreading this afternoon. I have early macular degeneration and need to get a shot monthly in my right eye. Sounds horrible, I know. They do numb you thoroughly, so I think it’s just the psychological reaction to it.
Does anyone here have a hammer toe? What sort of shoe do you use for that?
Sorry this is an encyclopedia. I talk a lot too!

I always had a gap growing up as well, so does my brother and so does my eldest daughter. We never had braces either. We tried to get them for our daughter but could never afford them1 -
Heather, I loved the article from your DIL. It makes an even greater impact coming from her because she is successful professionally and as a wife and mother and still finds time and inclination to stop and enjoy.
Terry, welcome back. Reading this thread daily has helped me stay focused on what is most important.
Vicki, It is so difficult to detach from adult children who keep messing up their lives. The more you learn about detachment, the less the stress. Best wishes.
I felt much better walking the dogs this morning and walker farther and uphill a bit. When I got home, I had to resist the impulse to ride my exercise bike. I have to remember to increase exercise a little bit at a time.

Tracey - they can x-ray your toe and determine it is broken; but all the will tell you is to tape it to the big toe for a period of time. Tylenol or Ibuprofen will do for pain. I have broke 'big' toes on both feet. I know I have broken a couple of the others because I seem to be pretty klutzy at times.

I took an extra Clonazepam and feel a lot better; tears from yesterday are gone. Dr. Bear mits says he will contact Neurologist; and maybe order the 'sleep study' (probably done at the building his office is in). Since I don't think I have had any seizures - because the only time I've been told I have had seizures; I don't remember them. When I am "Home Alone" then unless I fall down, or slide out of my chair and am 'on the floor' I am not aware of an 'aura' of one coming on. Still have not gotten in touch with my PsycheMD; maybe I will get something soon. At least I have enough medication to last until I need to go back to him. That is a relief. The practice he was in haven't told me anything (suggested that maybe I would want to come to see the MD who saw me in the hospital and I told them, not on 'no, but hell no'. Dr. Bear Paws said there wasn't anything she should have been because I was up there to 'tweak' my bipolar meds.

Took the water class today. Gave the gal the ginger chocolate cookies. I called them to her “heaven on earth”. She loves ginger anything and then to add chocolate! The plan for tomorrow is to do Cathe Friedrich’s Muscle Max DVD.
Tomorrow I volunteer at the Green Room then for the first time this season we have Newcomer bowling. Ceramics tonight
M – you know, this Toastmasters looks really good. I wish I could get over my great hesitation about speaking, so I think it might be good for me. Now can I work it into the schedule? What happens if you miss a meeting? How frequently are the meetings – ever week, every other week?
Janetr – why would your daughter get on you about losing weight? Does she think you didn’t need it?
Karen in VA – working in the medical field, you probably already know this. I’m not sure exactly what you do, but hydrogen peroxide poured on a blood stain will take the stain out as long as the item hasn’t been washed and dried.
After exercise went to the Salvation Army. Found a Talbotts shirt for $2.99. Talbotts is usually pretty expensive. I can use the colors that are in it. Then went to Big Lots and they finally had some of Vince’s rye bread. Then to WalMart to get a few things. What I need to do in the future is make a list of what I need for the following week so I can pick it up. Trust me, each of these stores are definitely on my way home. I’m not about to go out of my way.
Carol in GA – have you had a refrig with French doors before? I love mine.
I’m REALLY not looking forward to putting a blanket on the bed. For a while now I’ve been using a small blanket sometimes, but I don’t want to put one on permanently until I absolutely have to. Went in the pool yesterday (water was 80) and think I’ll go in for a bit today) Unfortunately, I really can’t do many exercises in the water since we had to put away the noodles (actually, we threw them out) and the kickboards.
Terry – welcome back. How has the jewelry been going?
Nettie – welcome! You CAN do this, and I so admire you. Come back and share the journey with us
Katla - at the Newcomer board meeting, to me, things are really stupid. There are all these things they say they will do. Like they say they want everyone who has a picture to put on the web to put it on a flash drive. It would be helpful if they’d tell people this. And that’s going on the assumption that people know how to do this. Like that’s going to happen. Adra said that she’d make labels to put on the box lunches we’ll get for the next general meeting. I just called her, this was news to her. I told her to give me the labels and I would print them out then put them on the boxes. The first email about this lunch said to tell the gal of your interest and she would email you how to order your lunch. Now she’s going to place the order. This really should have been thought out. People give her their order, send the money to the box, she places the order, Newcomers reimburses her. Really, many times things just aren’t thought out. That’s another reason I can’t wait to get out.
Lenora – I absolutely hated it when I couldn’t drive. I couldn’t wait for the time to get here when I could, so I can totally relate. By now, you’re probably used to not driving, but I still feel for ya. (((Hugs)))
Lisa in TN – are those ankle weights in the picture? I’m always on the lookout for some but I want ones that have things in them so you can adjust how much weight you have. Plus…I’m a cheapskate about some things and don’t really want to pay a whole lot. As it is now I have a foam roller, a bosu, a rebounder, step with risers, handle bands, bands that go around your feet, a band that is one piece of latex, some dumbells, and a ball.
Rebecca – to me, it is a mortal sin to pass by a rest area and not go to the bathroom.
Barbie – I think it such a shame that that blind girl was voted off DWTS. I think she did phenomenal! Of course she couldn’t do that intricate moves that someone with sight can do. I think it wrong that she was judged in the same manner that everyone else was judged.
Vicki – how nice of you to make that offer!

Michelle - Yeah, I've gotten used to 'not driving' - although living 30 miles from where we used to live and where my friends are - I find it pretty 'confining'. Getting rather 'bored'. There seems to be just so much time you can spend, cleaning house, reading, watching TV, and playing games on computer; or just catching up. I deleted my FB account for so many reasons, too long to list; but, 'family drama' is probably the top of the list. I rarely hear from most of my friends because it seems like FB is the 'only' means of communication as far as they are concerned; but, at least I don't have to read sister's political posts. I hate 'politics' AND 'politicians' … just a bunch of LIARS IMHO. All in it for the power and the money it affords them. Still do not understand the most recently ex-POTUS remaining totally involved when no other had ever done that before. On the side doing everything to put present POTUS's cabinet posts and other nominations through more of a ringer than anybody on the face of the earth. Many more 'socialists' running as Democrats; and RINOS - Republican In Name Only (ies) with a totally different agenda. Watching the hearings this past week, seeing a man have his name 'totally ruined' because Diane Feinstein sat on a letter from a woman who really did not want her name 'used'; then, got 'forced' to testify. Not only ruining Kavanaugh; but, her name as well. What more could the FBI find that they had not found when he was tapped to be on the Appeals Court or even what they found when they submitted their report; before Flack (R) said that 'he wasn't comfortable without another FBI probe into the incident at hand - now they want even more people interrogated - He is a 'swing vote'. So, make a decision and jump off the fence - even 'if' the decision is wrong. I 'think' the Statute of Limitations might have run on a lot of things being brought up. Just a total charade. I'd feel this way about any nominee for SCOTUS on either side of the aisle. Dragging it out until it is becoming a ridiculous scam. I thought Ruth Bader Gingsburg should be 'removed'/retired by now. She can't even keep her eyes 'open' during a meeting. I though she said she was going to retire when one party or the other got elected. Well, she served under a Democrat, a Republican, then a Democrat, now a Republican again. Wasn't she appointed by Clinton? “Clinton appointed not one, but two, Supreme Court Justices while he was under investigation.,” Thomas Jipping, Deputy Director of the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, wrote. “The second appointment came while he was actually ‘under subpoena.’ If Democrats care as much about precedent as they pretend, this one blows their Mueller-Kavanaugh argument out of the water.” IMHO. Get it on, confirm a 9th SCOTUS - so the SC can do its job like intended. GGRRRrrrrr
Sorry - I know we aren't supposed to discuss politics; off my 'soap box' now.
Lenora - having to spend why too much time in front of a TV. Going to ask Louis to help me empty my studio if it isn't raining this weekend.0 -
Sharon in the Seattle Area: My computer has been amazingly stable. I wish I could say the same for my typing skills. Most of my glitches are caused by me. :ohwell:
Vicki : I’m sorry to hear that your younger brother has ALS. It is a disease that I don’t understand very well. Sending good thoughts his way. :flowerforyou:
Sue in WA: Keep us in the loop regarding your health. I hope things go well.
Janetr & Heather: I had my fill of heels years ago. I do not like them & have not needed to wear them since my son’s wedding, several years ago. :noway:

I am currently rereading a series of books that I’ve always liked. It has been a year or two since I visited this trilogy and I’m currently in the middle of book 2. I’m enjoying it again. The author is Grace Burrows. DH likes her regency books, but I like this contemporary group of books set in Maryland.

Janetr – why would your daughter get on you about losing weight? Does she think you didn’t need it?I
Oh yes, she's very proud of my weight loss. What upset me is I want to lose 10# more, she said I was "already skinny". I told her I'm a long way from skinny so she gave me a little lecture on not being able to see how I look and I was "killing myself" to lose more. I think it was mainly stress due to all she has going on right now.
I'm over being hurt and will go right on working on losing the additional pounds. Lol
Janetr OKC

Janetr - When I was 154 lbs lots of people told me, including my son, that I didn't need to lose any more. Now I am 139 lbs the same people tell me I look fantastic! I think it's the initial shock and the loss of fat from the face in the early stages. The face seems to fill out a bit more when you stabilise, or else they just get used to it. It's taken me several months to lose this last pound, so I'm not on a crash diet! I do think, from a bone health point of view, that a BMI in the upper reaches of normal range is better at our age. Most studies seem to point that way. I don't want to go below 23.5, which seems to suit me. I am broad shouldered. Just a pound or two to S-L-O-W-L-Y lose. I do have a roll or two, when I sit down.
SLOWLY, with reference to my DDIL's article I linked, "Be More Snail". Lisa, did you read it?
Good programme from TMIAD Michael Moseley last night about the benefits of giving up alcohol for a month. Very good for the fatty liver. :noway: Interesting finding - the light drinkers went back to drinking the same after the AF month, but the heavy drinkers cut back to being light, or lighter, drinkers.
Had a better night's sleep last night. Woke up earlyish, but I was asleep before 11.
Love you all, Heather UK xxxxxxx

Vicki My paternal grandfather had ALS. (((Hugs))) for you and your family.
Katla Even ALS experts will admit to the many baffling aspects of ALS. I will tell you what little I know: ALS is a progressive neurological condition that affects the motor functions. Amyotrophic literally means "no nourishment for the muscles". The senses, (hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch) aren't affected. There is minimal or no change in the person's behavior or cognition, which is really important to remember as the disease progresses. The person can see & hear, cognitively process, and react to everything around him/her, but his/her ability to speak and respond is gradually lost. There are some medicines now which can slow progression of the disease, which means that people can live up to 10 years after the diagnosis is made. My grandfather lived less than 2 years after he was diagnosed. I was a sophomore in high school. My dad was a doctor. It was hard to lose Granddad and see Dad helpless.
Janetr & Heather I have gained & lost a lot of weight a number of times. People are very free with unsolicited opinions. Most of the time, it's a weird way of giving a compliment ("don't lose any more!"). But when it's a family member or close friend, it can be disconcerting. The only way I have successfully dealt with family & close friends is to do one of the following when I am commanded not to lose any more weight by someone close to me: either I say, "OK!" with a smile & then do whatever I intended to do anyway. Or, if it's getting to be a broken record, I tell them that my ultimate weight goal impacts MY health, and is to be determined only by my doctor and me. Then I do whatever I intended to do. Right now I am not hearing anything from anybody because my weight has crept back up. People never say anything to me when I am fat. I'm grateful for that. It's hard enough to deal with it when I am thin.
I hope I can go back to sleep. My grandson & I have a lot to cover in school later today, and I want to be on my toes. His ADHD makes him zip through information so fast it makes my head spin, but he can get distracted or skip over something quite easily. 2 days ago he was done with his Civics suspiciously fast. He hadn't downloaded the Lesson Plan or Q&A/Lesson Review. He hadn't read the assignment in the book. He had just zipped through the slides on the computer and called it a day. LOL!!! This is how I spend my mornings.

Welcome back Terry, we've missed you.
Rita what is the stone structure that looks like a chimney?
Lisa in TN Zumba, T'ai Chi, Bellydance and walking with family? What FUN!
Rebecca "... you definitely notice..." you said it! That IS where the cheese gets binding...
Tracey, RICE. Rest Ice Compression Elevation. Well maybe not the compression. Ice first. Then support the troubled toe with a roll of cotton underneath, extending to toe on either side and tape together. Elevate. take Ipuprofen as recommended on the for inflammation and pain. Take the recommended dosage for at least the first few days. If you try to make do with less, the inflammation/swelling just gets worse.
Vicki for your brother and his wife. My papa had ALS. It is such a cruel disease, trapping the mind in an unresponsive body.
Katla thanks for your DH's Grace Burrows recommendation, Haven't read a regency since Georgette Heyer 30 years ago ;}
Heather enjoyed your DD's writing, thanks. Sending "Enough #bemoresnail, already!" thoughts to your real estate chain.

Hi ladies, I'm back - again. A lot going on here in Vermont. Leaves are quickly changing and I'm not ready. Finally got my cast off, transitioned to the boot, and now I'm in sneakers and doing PT twice a week. Foot feels pretty good. Now it's my husband's time for health issues. Insomnia (sleeps about 4 hours with a strong sleeping pill) and heart issues. He may need a pacemaker. He did have a monitor put in to record what was going on. We've had a few emergency room visits. Another dr's visit on Monday and we are hoping to get some answers then.
My eating is out of control again and I've gained 10 of the 30lbs I lost. This is adding to my stress. I'm going to try to keep checking in with the group as I need all the support I can get.
When I get a minute, I'll read the current posts to see what you all have been up to.
Terry, trying to hold it together in VT
Welcome back, I was just thinking of you yesterday.0 -
Machka your shoe shop thoughts made me smile. Can you afford to buy backup pairs of the comfortable boots? Don't suppose you could have one big coordinating meeting with representatives from all those demanding organizations? So you could update them all at once and ask them to reconcile their conflicting wants?
No, the organisations are different enough that the each need to be dealt with differently ... and, unfortunately, regularly.
The regularity is because my husband is still changing (healing, plateauing, learning new things, becoming more independent, then maybe taking a step back, etc.) and his needs are changing regularly.
I have had to step in and direct traffic ... and essentially tell each organisation what they can and cannot do. There was just too much faffing about and I was getting too frustrated. But there are a lot of unknowns.

Hi Karen, yes, it is Asperger Syndrome. Different places call it different things and they keep changing the name in the UK! Basically, I have the triad of impairments associated with autism but I have higher than average intelligence. So I'm a total wierdo socially - haven't a clue - but give me a spreadsheet or maths or statistics and I'm as happy as Larry (whoever he is!)
It can be difficult because people look at me and can't see a difference. It's only when they spend some time with me that they realise something just isn't quite right. Sensory issues around noise and light make working in an open office difficult too.
