Searching anything health or fitness on Pinterest will result in bad science bingo. You can get all of the quacky, garbage nonsense represented in one easy place. I wish they had report capabilities.4

"If you're on a diet, why are you eating THAT?"
Ummm excuse me but I perfectly portioned this cookie into my plan today so if you don't back off....

Co-worker on a keto diet: I had a cupcake for dinner last night because I wanted a cupcake.
Me: I thought cupcakes were not keto-friendly?
Co-worker: Oh I reached goal so now I'm loosening the rules!5 -

Happened to me. After I changed my life, I had about three months where I struggled to get to 1000 calories. I just had no appetite at all. It was great.
So what’s your issue with it?
OK. My issue is this: when you root down into what's going on, the vast majority of the time real food (albeit very nutrient dense, often unhealthy and in large amounts) is being replaced by scads of rabbit food. AKA diet food. And it really is difficult to get in 1000 calories worth of undressed lettuce and celery sticks. And enough for many people to have no appetite. Then add in the euphoria of wanting to lose weight and the excitement of how you can 'goose' your weight loss by limiting your calories and so many people just aren't 'hungry' enough to eat their 1200 or 1400 calories.
So, in the short run, they can't get enough calories in. But as soon as the dam bursts, (or gut), these same people are back eating the same crap they were eating before.
So, yeah, it's a generalization. But one that matches many of the experiences of people who participate in these boards. And, yes, not everybody fits into the generalization. But many do.5 -

Omg. Glad I'm not the only hater who thinks this whenever I see one of those threads. It really makes me curious what the *kitten* they are eating, I have to play ridiculous calorie tetris to stay under 1450.

Placebos have shown that 95% of people claiming a gluten intolerance simply have psychosomatic symptoms.
Unless you have autoimmune disease like I do. The ONLY way I lose weight or not go through the day in pain, is to avoid gluten at all costs. So no, very real to me. I must be one of the mere 5%. Interesting numbers. I’d like to see where those facts are located.

You have to do a specific plan, WOE, or subscribe to a particular philosophy to lose weight, be it juicing, WW, vegan, paleo, alkaline vegan, etc.
Just eat less and move some.

I get a bit tired of people setting unrealistic deadlines or losing weight to fit into a piece of clothing. It just seems like they are setting themselves up unnecessarily to be frustrated.
I wish people would stop being dramatic over 2 lb gain or overeating one day. It is particularly sad when they call themselves names.5 -
One I would get from my mom was - "you don't want to lift weights, you'll get muscles" - DUH that's the whole point. I like to jest that she belonged to the diet of the month club.
Oh and on the other side, "you've lost so much weight, you can have a little XXX." said by too many relatives.happytree923 wrote: »Omg. I love that "calorie tetris" ! I'm stealing that one!
I do WW and MFP - needed more data than I was getting with WW, but need the accountability WW gives.1 -

But even if they fit into that generalization, what is the point in being irritated by their posts? They're not part of some great nutritional-woo conspiracy out to undermine sensible weight-loss advice and your personal success. They're individuals operating under misconceptions, and logic and kindness suggest the appropriate response is not irritation but help in clearing the misconceptions, such as
1) They mistakenly think that eating VLCD is actually a good thing.
2) They think that when trying to lose weight or "eat healthy/clean" they have to stick to high-volume, low-energy foods, which fill them up without providing adequate nutrition, including energy.
3) They're eating more than they think because they're not actually logging or they're not logging accurately.
4) They've started drinking massive amounts of water and they're mistaking the discomfort of a bloated, sloshy stomach for feeling "full" ( = "not hungry").
I mean, I can see getting irritated if someone posts one of these "too-full-to-eat-1200-kcal" threads in a celebratory, this-is-the-way-to-do-it, come-follow-me tone, but I don't see those very often. I can see getting irritated if somebody makes one of those posts seeking help to get more calories, then posts dozens of responses to all the advice explaining why they won't/can't log more accurately and won't/can't eat anything other than leafy greens with no salad dressing, "bone broth," and a half serving of plain oatmeal for breakfast. But getting irritated at the initial post of someone who recognizes that they're not eating enough but doesn't understand that it's OK to have a starchy side, consume full-fat dairy, cook their food in fat, and put some cheese, seeds, egg, meat, salad dressing, etc. on their salad seems like a waste of your energy and a pointless souring of your own mood.6 -

I hate that too...i include sweets, chips, etc. at times. Everything in moderation...i hate it when people say well I don't eat any of that...i eat healthy. So do I but I also like other things too.

Yes yes and yes to this!!1 -
This. I get this a lot when I tell people I don't eat breakfast (because, you know, I am not hungry first thing in the morning) and they tell me how I am ruining my metabolism and I need to eat because I have been fasting all night and you need food to get your metabolism going etc. etc.
Nevermind the scientific studies that show that IF (intermittent fasting) isn't bad for you.3 -
I try not to let my emotions get in the way of offering advice calmly, but some that make me eye-roll a little:
- Turning vegan/vegetarian just to lose weight
- Can't lose weight because (aging, menopausal, hypothyroid . . . .)
- HIIT that isn't actually HIIT, but is called HIIT because the term is trendy
- HIIT recommended to beginning exercisers
- 30-day challenges that want people to work up to a gazillion reps of some single really tedious thing by doing increasing bunches of that one thing every single day (or maybe 6 days a week), without any thought to how recovery affects building fitness
- "I hate cardio" (I don't understand how you can hate every single one of the hundreds/thousands of widely-diverse possible activities that elevate heart rate)
- The many terms that people (maybe mostly women) use to hate on arbitrary details of perfectly normal body parts ("bingo wings", "hip dips", "cankles", etc.)
- People blaming 3rd parties (family, BF/GF, evil corporations, etc.) for things they choose to put in their very own adult mouths, then chew and swallow in arbitrary quantities.
- "Superfood"
- Threads where someone asks a very basic beginner question, no one really answers the basic question clearly, but the thread gets hijacked by people arguing about advanced technical details of some loosely related thing. (Such as the recent one that started with a beginner asking if Zumba 3 times weekly and clean eating was a good way to lose body fat, and ended up with a completely irrelevant argument about what counted as an endurance exercise; or "Is bicycling a good way to burn calories" ending up in an argument about power meters or bike trainers.)8 -
"You walk so much, it's no wonder you're losing so much weight!"
I walk 1-2 miles a day to give me a little extra wiggle room with my calories. I'm losing so much weight because I'm not eating 3000+ calories per day like I was before. The walking has very little to do with it compared to the huge difference diet makes.6 -

There is so much gold in here. Love it. All of it.
Especially these.
HIIT is a good one. If you're getting started, don't start with separating yourself from a whole bunch of cash to go buy the B**fl*x "14 minutes per day HIIT machine. If you're a beginner, it's not for you (if you were to even do the HIIT right).
Complete disregard for the most important part of exercise: recovery/adaptation! Your body can't adjust if you beat it up more quickly than it can recover. Plus, if you don't beat it enough to have the need to recover, it is also ineffective. (Use the kitchen for fat loss first!)
"Superfood". .... Uhhh..... okay.2 -
I'm gonna add another one in here that will probably get me some woos, but whatever.
Walking as excersise - yes, walking is GOOD, and it's a lot better than nothing. But the truth is, humans are bipeds, we evolved to walk 40 miles a day and hunt saber tooth tigers, not ride in cars and sit on couches.7 -

No woo here. Walking was the first, most consistent movement I did during fat loss. It was the foundation for everything else that followed.3 -

True to all of this especially thread hijacking with the advanced or obscure on what was an easy question to answer. Does nothing but confuse and intimidate beginners.
I've seen people gain on superfood diets. One of my friends has been doing vegan paleo and ignoring portions, and confused on why she can't lose weight. She says she won't do portion control or count calories because she doesn't want to "become dependent on a plan".2 -

One that makes me throw my eyes to the heavens.....
“I lost ....x..... pounds in ....x.... weeks by.... (insert crazy fad diet here). I totally recommend it!”
Or
“Can I lose ....x.... pounds by ....x.... date for my wedding/vacation/special event/ trip to the moon etc...?”
Slow and steady people, slow and steady! It’s not a sprint!2 -

something to think about for all the carbohydrate phobias out there.

What??!! You mean it's not because of my age??!!! LOL! I've been struggling with weightloss and I totally was starting to blame my age!! Fine, I won't do that...
And dang it you mean I'm responsible for the what goes in my mouth, and chew and swallow?!! Fine, I'll take responsibility...

Just for the record: I'm 62, menopausal, hypothyroid myself; otherwise, I probably wouldn't presume to opine. (I lost weight anyway. ).1 -
I hate people who sell or endorse stuff like herbalife and other supplements, claiming that their (and only their!) products are the best or only way to lose weight/get stronger/be healthy/etc.
Basically the whole diet pill industry just takes advantage of peoples' insecurity & guilt & shame in order to make a quick buck. And that's just wrong.
Yea these products and all the "health coach" guru's popping up on social media piss me off. Selling processed foods to people who really need exercise and eating real whole foods (ie: just less calories).0
