USING OUR THREAD:
- Join us at any time - this is a day to day challenge.
- Set your own goal - this thread is about drinking less and you decide what that means to you.
- There are no scheduled check-ins - post as often or as little as you want or need.
- AF is an acronym for Alcohol Free. For others commonly used on this site see - https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1069278/acronyms-and-terms-for-new-mfp-members-v-6/p1

TIPS & OBSERVATIONS FROM OUR MEMBERS:
Getting Started or Starting Over - The Early Days
- Some people find it easier to set small attainable goals at the beginning to help boost confidence.
- If you have been drinking daily the first days will be some of the hardest and drinking again will feel like a cure but it delays the relief that only time can provide.
- There will always be a reason to delay the start/restart of your journey.
- For those ready to commit to being alcohol-free permanently, the videos on YouTube by Craig Beck will help. He also has a program you can join.
- You may experience mood swings and anxiety during your first two weeks. It is suggested you try and focus on the benefits of your goal.
- Cravings are said to last only 6 minutes, so find something to distract you like arming yourself with alternatives: tea, mocktails, activities, etc.
- You may find that filling the time you drink with other activities like exercise or hobbies can be a helpful distraction.
- If you find them tempting try and avoid events/outings that will have drinking for a time.
- Don't let pride or shame keep you from asking for the help you need.
- Sometimes talking it out or posting your thoughts/feelings/struggles may help you work things out for yourself.
- It is okay that you don't always have all the answers.
- Some days will be easier than others.
- You may have initial/increased sugar cravings.
- You should never take a day that you have lived up to your goals for granted.
- Celebrate the smaller victories too. Less alcohol is still less alcohol even if your goal was zero at that moment.
- Once you begin sticking to your goals for one day to many days you should believe you are capable of the same and more because you are.
- Annie Grace (This Naked Mind author) has a free program on her website (https://www.alcoholexperiment.com/) called the 30 day experiment which can be joined anonymously.
- Failure is not giving in and drinking. Failure is to stop trying to accomplish your goals.
Life with Less Alcohol
- It can be helpful to educate yourself with books and web research (Some suggested books and links listed below).
- There is no benefit to comparing yourself to others because this is a personal journey.
- You may often feel conflicted. You will know that there are numerous real benefits to sticking to your goal while at the same time think that alcohol is an important part of stress relief, relaxation, celebration, etc.
- You may feel punished by not drinking or drinking less but that feeling usually fades with time.
- Sometimes drinking less or quitting will strain friendships that centered around alcohol.
- Having a list of reasons to stick to your goals handy for yourself can be helpful. Some lists have included remembering how bad it feels to have a hangover, excess/unwanted calories, having a racing heart during the night, sleeplessness, anxiety, and depression.
- It is a good idea to have a plan for how you might deal with various tempting scenarios before engaging in a social situation.
- Self-Reflection is an important part of the journey. Once we figure out why we drink we can hopefully use that information to form new habits and make better and more mindful decisions.
- Sometimes doing something nice for yourself like a little reward for a success makes the journey easier.
- You will see many helpful suggestions and ideas that work for some people. However, finding what tactics work for you may involve some trial and error.
- It is not uncommon for certain activities that were once combined with alcohol to trigger temptation. Many have said that outdoor activities in warmer weather made alcohol very tempting.
- Many that have spent time with no alcohol after drinking again realized that it doesn't enhance experiences like they once believed it did. Some have said they no longer like the taste.
- Don't forget how sticking to your goal has made your life better and remember it to motivate you again if you fall off your path.
- If you begin drinking daily again whether planned like a vacation or unplanned you may once again face a struggle to get it under control.
- For some people it is easier to not drink than it is to moderate drinking. Others have found moderating impossible.
Reported Benefits of Less or No Drinking: (Results may be incremental, and/or they may vary)
- Improved sleep after 2,4,7,10,& 60 days
- Improved skin/complexion after 10 days
- Improved ease in weight loss. Not only from the savings of alcohol calories but some report making poor food choices after drinking.
- Increased energy after as few as 2 days
- Increase in other fun activities. Some have found that daily drinking became their main recreational activity and their world was decreased in size.
- Increased productivity
- Reduction of high blood pressure
- Lower resting heart rate
- Less Acid Reflux
- Significant financial savings
- Better relationships with family
When Alcohol Is Used for Avoidance by @Orphia:
- We drink to ease the stress of the working day, to avoid it.
- We drink to avoid anxiety in social situations.
- We drink to avoid making decisions about not drinking.
- Our problems don't go away if we avoid them. We need to learn to face them.
- I've learned that not drinking makes the problems often go away (e.g. drinking out of worry about drinking).
- Having a clear head makes our problems seem much smaller.
- Having a clear head makes problems easier to solve.
How to Be Kind to "Tomorrow You" by @Orphia
- Instead of lumbering myself with guilt, headaches, and poor nutrition hangovers in the morning, I think of think how nice it would be not to feel that way tomorrow.
- I worry about "me" and don't want "Tomorrow Me" to feel awful.
- Instead of thinking alcohol is something nice to have *now*, think of *NOT drinking* as something nice we can do for the person we are when we awaken in the morning.
- Do you bank calories for a festive occasion? (Handy tactic, I might add.)
- We can bank a good mood for when we wake up.
- We need to have sympathy for "Tomorrow You" and be kind to her/him.
- Don't look at a day without alcohol as a punishment for being bad or having no willpower.
- Not drinking is a lovely, sympathetic gesture towards the person we are now, and whom we will wake up as.
- You’d be kind to a stranger. Be kind to Tomorrow You.

What have you achieved this year?
Don't let the rest of the year be a slippery slope into indulgence and think your new year's resolution will solve everything. It will probably fail.
Set a goal in November and finish it, then you'll feel fantastic, no matter how you spend December, and finish the year smiling!5 -
In again for November.
This will be my 11 month on this thread. Best decision of my entire 2018 was the day I started reading here. Second best decision was the 1st time I posted here. That was 278 days ago.
Thank you @Orphia for you continued contribution to be our Master Of Ceremonies.

Please add me. I have been really struggling lately. I am scared to quit but I really want to. This has been an almost life long struggle for me. I turn 32 in the middle of November, so getting sober now would be a great present to myself.6

Thanks for keeping the thread going! I am in for an AF November (and December). Today is day nine--4

@saracantthink I sent you a friend request. Hope you keep reading our community's insights and gaining insights in how to make changes to your habits one day at a time.
I started reading in January and have been alcohol free since February 1. I found it easier to keep having days off than to make the effort to re-quit after a day or more drinking. Others have been successful at drinking less and having days off, and I value their insights and contributions.
You're young (I'm 51) and I'm confident you can think this through. Just by reading and posting in the forums, you've shown a willingness to learn.1 -
Day Ten AF.6

Today is day 30 AF for me.
I plan to have a celebration toast this friday for making it through Sober October ... but I want to be accountable and not slip back into the 6-8 beer a day habit I had previously. I'd like to limit myself to once a week through November.10 -
Congrats 73CL350!0

Hello all, id like to keep u company this mth. I was in Feb and march I have lost nearly 30 kg so.. I want to keep going. Cutting back the drinks has helped alot. Hi There. This is what I was looking for today and voila! So I am happy to join this thread for the month of November. Thanks!2
-
Hello everyone! I'm pretty happy with my results in October 6 days with some drinks out of 31. Would like to make it 4 in November. And it is not alcohol but for me it is related - one month without smoking Yay!
Have a great day everyone8 -
Good morning crew! I have fallen off the wagon the later weeks of October, but vow to get back on. My husband is a heavy drinker and he is really trying to cut back before cutting out. I am very proud of him and I cannot be supportive if I have a bottle of wine each night.
I will be out of town Friday-Sunday. I am sure that a few drinks will be had, but my daughter and I will be running a 5k Saturday and I don't want to do that hung over. Also, I refuse to fly back hung over - that is the WORST!!!
Here's to a DRYER November!!!4 -
Hello to everyone!
Day 11 AF--shooting to stay that way through the end of the year.2 -

My house is too far back in the woods to get Trick or Treaters, but I will still dress as Sober Gramma for the night.
Wishing success to all those starting No-vino-ber ...6 -
I normally make pizza every Sunday night but was out of commission for a few weeks recovering from a surgery. I always pour a half glass of wine to sip while I am getting them ready for the oven. I fell back into this on Sunday and had another small glass with dinner. I managed to stop after that as I knew I had a big workout scheduled the next morning.
Well, I felt great drinking, but I had a bad sleep and it took me hours to get myself out of bed and doing my workout. And I had a headache all day. You would have thought I drank the bottle.
I am not ready to say I will be AF, but I am becoming very aware of the benefits of not drinking and the consequences of even a small amount.5 -

Hello November I plan to REMEMBER everything.4 -
Happy New Month! I'm on Day 11 AF, and debating whether to have a planned drink or two this wknd. Wanted to comment for the newcomers on some of my feelings over the past 10 days.
For the most part, all good, happy, peaceful, non-negative. Glorious sleep and joyful awakenings in the morning simply by not feeling like crap. But I had some bumps. All to say that bumps are normal--and even expected at times. But they are there in anything substantial we're trying to achieve--weight loss, career advances, educational achievements, etc.
Getting ready to go to a friend's Happy Hour the first Friday, I was grumpy and emotional. I think part was because I couldn't drink. But the bigger part was dealing with emotions that I would normally numb away. First I've always struggled with transitions (even Friday--but esp Sunday). On top of that, what is my passion, I need a challenge,I'm getting old and I don't even have grandkids to show for it, blah blah blah... :-)
The second was similar--having 7 people over for a Sunday dinner. No wine while cooking with nor Prossecco with dinner. I actually found myself trying to push more Prossecco on guests (who all live within 2 blocks)--which isn't cool. Guess I was trying to drink vicariously while not wanting a vicarious hangover.
The third was a holiday-Halloween of course. No grumps...just wanting a nice glass of wine while sitting in front of the fire waiting for Trick-Or-Treaters. Still enjoyed the night, and we all had a laugh when I was handing out candy and my tutu-skirt fell down around my ankles. And I wasn't even drinking tequila!7 -
I'm in,,3 drinking days in October but I want none in November6
-
I'm in for for a NOvember to remember.
Today is Day 12 AF.3 -
Here goes day one af.9

@saracantthink Yay, well done for making the effort! The first evening is "hard", but it looks like you've had kids - you know some things are much harder! You can definitely do this.
It gets easier!2
